The data bref uses still depends on stringers to determine where a ball was hit. Stringers tend to locate balls that were caught in the zone and balls that weren’t out of the zone more often that reality, according to some research. Until we have access to field/fx, any system that at all measures where a ball was hit will rely on human stringers.

Agreed. Andrelton Simmons and Andruw Jones are the only two defenders I’ve seen that I’d pay to watch do nothing but play defense. I’d add Ozzie if I had seen more of him in his prime (I only started fanatically watching baseball in the early-to-mid 90s).

The defense is obviously great, and I think the offense has a lot of room to grow. I hope he can get out of the bad habit of popping up to the infield and shallow outfield, otherwise all of his batted ball rates look great. An Andrelton Simmons with a league average bat is a 4-6 WAR player.

One of the most remarkable things to me about Simmons and I think is actually overlooked is just how accurate his arm is. Freddie does save a lot of plays at first, but if you really pay attention, it’s VERY RARELY one on a throw from Simmons. Freddie just seems to always be standing completely upright and the glove chest high when he catches one from Simmons.
