I know joy every day. And I do so without pretending there are some imaginary friends. I have joy in life, seeing my daughter discover the world, playing catch with my Labrador, being with friends for diner and drinks... the list goes on and one.

As far as companions, I have them: a wife, family, friends... the Labrador :) I don't need to pretend I have an imaginary friend anymore... I stopped doing that when I was about 4 or 5 (it was the Lone Ranger then).

If I'm lost "without Christ," then so is everyone.... since there is no Christ. I rely on myself, family, and friends because they're real. They're there. They're tangible and (mostly) predictable beings. One who relies on a pretend being of "supernatural" powers might as well pretend he or she has the Force or Harry Potter magic.

I can't mock the existence of the non-existent. I can, however, mock those that believe in that utter nonsense. If you step back and look at what you believe in, truly look at it (don't be afraid, just do it), you'll see how ridiculous it truly is.

Apparently God gave you over to a deprived mind. I could say enjoy your life , howeevr you will not know joy until you turn (or return) to God through Jesus Christ. You may chose to be your own companion and love your self the most , but you are also your own enemy , so without Christ you are lost forever.Whatever issues you have that made you rely only on yourself and not God, through faith and belief God can help you overcome. However, you going AGAINST Him and proclaiming He does not exist and mocking His existence, will not help you at all. Take care.

I think that story is full of spin. From what he was saniyg, 99% of which I agree in, he was just saniyg be good. I think the news story is skewed against atheism from the OPENING line. I wouldn't put too much credence in it Monica. I agree with you though: Be the kind of person you would admire, make a difference by being the best you can be, and go live your life. Exactly!

Interesting! I had wondered esiclpaley what atheists do in high-stress situations where it's possible they'll die and a quote from one of the women answered it for me they rely on their training and their crew. And I guess they accept the possibility they will indeed die? On my plane last night I accepted I might die and felt ok about it but also prayed like crazy for the ride to smooth out. (All I could think was, I hope my book still gets published even if this is the end for me. )And yes, I think many people do turn to religion out of fear. They're afraid of death. And much of religion is also predicated on fear do such and such or you're going to hell. It's funny because people turn to religion out of fear but there's also an element of fear within religion. Does that make sense? I think a big difference between religion and spirituality is motivation it seems to me spirituality is based on love while religion is based on fear. The two aren't exclusive (i.e. a person can be spiritual and religious and the spiritual folks can also be religious). The reason I'm spiritual is from love love for myself, love for others, love for connection. And when I'm afraid I use my spirituality to feel better but my primary motivation is not fear. Sorry for this essay. And p.s., thanks for the link on your blogroll! I'm flattered!

You can have scientific evidence for a god if that god is alleged to have an effect in reality. If that god is supposed to "answer prayers," "create," or "move mountains," then we should be able to quantify the prayed versus the non-prayed, measure the creation, and observe the skid marks of moved mountains. Instead, what we see is a universe that looks exactly as one might expect if it had no gods.

If, on the other hand, your god does not interact with reality -exists only as a concept- what good is it. Such a god is not only worthless/useless, but not worthy of any respect or appeasement.
