it functions more or less the way that GW2's 3-faction PvP works: three essentially arbitrary factions (in GW2: servers; in Rift: chosen warfront-only faction) fighting for server-wide buffs. Story-wise, it's an alternate reality where the Ascended have won (its a Sliver, although Omen/ Quantum Sight is not needed to enter) and then have fractured along what-to-do-next lines - so Defiants and Guardians can choose any one of the three factions that most corresponds with their preference for how to run the world after the Ascended have won (or, whichever faction their friends choose). It's a 3-sided persistent warfront that resests after it's victory condition is achieved - what's not to like?

Yeah, I've been thinking a bit more about this today and caught myself considering re-installing the game again. My initial disappointment was really just because I made a goofy assumption that there was going to be a full third faction added based on a headline I half read.

As far as the player factions getting along, I have no idea but I doubt it. This feels more like a temporary truce kind of deal. I'm guessing that Guardians and Defiants are only cooperating within this new PvP scenario (which I think is what it is) rather than within the regular world as well.

I think it could be great! But I also have alot of questions surrounding why the two pre-existing factions suddenly get along. Or am I so out of the loop with that game that I missed something?

I really have no basis for comparing the games sine the first Diablo-like game I remember playing is Torchlight. Ironically, I remember not spending a lot of time with it since there was no multiplayer.

I agree with you about it being cause for concern. To me it's basically gambling, which is not something I'm fond of, but a lot of people really seem to get into it. I got an email survey from Cryptic recently addressing lock boxes and made a point of saying that I'd rather just have cosmetics available in the store not stuffed inside a slot machine.

It's a bit ironic that it's Jeremy whose involved in this, since according to interviews with Geko (Al Rivera) Jeremy's been one of the devs whose been a voice for players.

I agree that it was obviously a personal opinion, and that Massively's coverage was somewhat misleading. That said, the actual exchange is not entirely without cause for concern. Blind drop rate lock boxes - which are certainly not unique to Perfect World - are somewhat ethically troubling. It is very possible that this practice is actually against the law in one or more countries. And the personal opinion of this particular developer - from the clarification on the Cryptic forums - is as follows:

"my original response to Suricata's concerns over gambling were intended to point out that the results of his actions could end up not being to his liking. Because I care that super-fans like him continue to have access to this game."

He may not speak for Cryptic, but he presumably has somewhat of a pulse of the importance of these transactions to the company overall. Apparently, this number is higher than their revenue from the nation of Denmark. "If you think what we are doing is wrong, better not alert the authorities or we'll cut you off" is not exactly what I like to hear from a company that I do business with.
