Thanks.
I’ve been using 64-bit OS for more than a year.
My initial solution was a virtual machine running 32-bit OS with Cisco’s 32-bit IPSec client, which I used as a jump host to connect to my clients.

Informative post Anders. A lot of people are frustrated with Cisco's lack of support for the 64-bit IPsec client. Its good to see you giving people different options. We also write on this topic, check out http://vpnhaus.ncp-e.com/.

Indexes can end up missing if you use SQL Server's Generate Scripts feature to produce a script to create the schema. The default is, dangerously in my opinion, NOT to script the indexes. Or triggers, so if you use those, they're probably missing as well.

Red Gate SQL Compare generally produces better scripts, though I've not yet compared against a blank database to create a complete database script!

Hi Rajmund,

I can’t think of a good way of implementing an asynchronous handcrafted client proxy.

Add Service Reference and the SvcUtil creates a modified service contract with BeginXXX and EndXXX methods. For the developer this is nice, as the asynchronous method invocation functionality is explicated state and follows the <a href="http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa719595%28VS.71%29.aspx" rel="nofollow">Asynchronous Design Pattern</a>.

I would just use delegates with the handcraftet WCF client, like so:

  var proxy = new HelloWorldClient();

  Func<string> del = proxy.HelloWorld;

  del.BeginInvoke(callback =>
      Console.WriteLine(del.EndInvoke(callback)), null);

Can you thing of a better option that explicit states the possibility of the asynchronous method invocation?

Hi Rajmund,

I can’t think of a good way of implementing an asynchronous handcrafted client proxy.

Add Service Reference and the SvcUtil creates a modified service contract with BeginXXX and EndXXX methods. For the developer this is nice, as the asynchronous method invocation functionality is explicated state and follows the Asynchronous Design Pattern.

I would just use delegates with the handcraftet WCF client, like so:

  var proxy = new HelloWorldClient();

  Func<string> del = proxy.HelloWorld;

  del.BeginInvoke(callback =>
Console.WriteLine(del.EndInvoke(callback)), null);

Can you thing of a better option that explicit states the possibility of the asynchronous method invocation?

With WCF clients, you have another simple possibility "Add Service Reference" in Visual Studio 2005/2008.

Read my blog post "Handcrafting the WCF client" which discuss the different possibilities for WCF-based service clients.

In the old day of webservice implementation, eg using .asmx, to consume the service I just have to run the browser and goto http://localhost:port/myservice.asmx.

What is the similar step for consuming this WCF Webservice ? Please help. Thank you very much in advance.

Thank you :) The problem with that would have been the fact that I reference several distinct workflows from the same program... they can't all use the same contract. Anyway, I managed to solve the issue. Thanks again for taking the time to answer!

Hi Marcel,

You must use the standard way of defining generic types in configuration file if you want to use a service contract like IBasicContract

It is written in the configuration file like this: IBasicContract`2[TRequest,TResponse]

I also posted this reply on stackoverflow in case you do not see this.
:-)

I believe the scenario you're describing for simultaneous writes on read committed snapshot is incorrect. It seems like you're applying the behavior of snapshot isolation level to read committed snapshot. It's nice that the names are so very similar--it helps confuse things.

Anyway, the way I think of read committed snapshot is that writers don't block readers, but writers still block writers. You're saying one of the writers will throw an error. I just tried this scenario on a DB where I have is_read_committed_snapshot_on set to on, and the second update blocked until I committed, as I expected.

I think you're thinking of the conflict detection bit in snapshot isolation level. The article you reference says this: "Unlike Snapshot, it always returns latest consistence version and no conflict detection."

By choosing basicHttpBinding over wsHttpBinding you lose functionality (Reliable messaging, message security and transaction support), which might not be an option.

In my scenario I can use streamed transfer mode as I’m already using netTcpBinding. :-)

I your case you still consume lots of memory, as the messages as the client waits for all the messages to be received before it starts processing. You can improve your memory consumption (and properly execution speed) by processing the messages as they arrive – by changing your implementation to working on a stream (just like a regular stream from the System.IO namespace). I haven’t quite figured it out how to do this on a binary encoded stream, but I have a working example with text encoding. I will post here on my blog as soon as I get time to try it out.

Frodoqui: Thanks for enlightening me about the StreamedResponse transfer mode – this will help me reduce memory consumption until I get the time to change the implementation.

I had a similar problem but with large List messages, i was using wsHttpBinding, fixed it by changing de binding to basicHttpBinding and using transferMode="StreamedResponse", with only that modification my memory problems disappeared.

Hi Roy,

My complaints about your presentations is due to most of it was about database state management - How to restore state after a database test. The possibilities you presented was manual rollback, Enterprise Services and TransactionScope. You did not address how to create database tests simple and efficiently.

I would have liked if you dug deeper into how to write the database unit/integration tests. Not only how to restore the state after a test.
At the end of the session you sang a song. I thing your song was funny, but you rushed through the end of the presentation just to be able to sing your song. You should have prioritized your presentation over you song.

Regards,
Anders Lybecker

I'm sorry that my session about Database testing didn't give you what you expected. If possible I'd love to know what was missing, or gone wrong with it so that I can do better next time.

Thanks,
Roy Osherove
