Information, Publication, and Public Affairs Office (IPPAO)
Telefax: 302-2215 / 554-8400 loc. 3842

UP MANILA statement on the JULY 17 COURTZONE shooting incident

UP Manila wishes to allay the fears of the public, particularly its students and their parents, on the shooting incident between two security guards that happened yesterday, July 17, 2012, at the Court Zone badminton court in Paco. The University assures that it is in full control of the situation and has exerted additional measures to tighten security in and around its premises.

UP Manila is issuing this statement on the incident that alarmed UP Manila students and their PE teacher who were holding classes at the said badminton court at that time. Seeking refuge in the restroom, the students and the teacher were fetched shortly by the CAS Administrative Officer in a UP vehicle and brought back safely to the UPM campus.

CAS Dean Reynaldo Imperial, in the initial incident report, said that pending investigation of the case and results on the ocular assessment of the place, PE classes in the above badminton court have been temporarily suspended. He has also asked the CAS Associate Dean Dr. Alex Gonzaga to review the policies on holding off-campus PE classes.

UPM Chief Security Officer Major Florendo Alejo said that the security officers are still getting the full details on what really happened and denied previous rumor of a hostage taking incident. He added that since the shooting happened outside the campus, it is not within the UPM administration’s jurisdiction. To beef up security at the said premise and other outside locations where PE classes are being held, additional guards can be requested and deployed. Coordination can also be made with the chiefs of security in these places through UPM’s Good Neighbors Initiative project.

Due to space limitations, some PE classes at UP Manila are being held in nearby facilities outside the University campus. But with the increasing spate of random crimes around the vicinity that alarm and threaten the safety and security of its students and teachers, the incident provide the UPM administration a good reason to review the policy on holding classes outside the secured campus.

From the Department of Social Sciences

The Department of Social Sciences of the University of the Philippines Manila and the School of Social Work of the University of Southern California have partnered for this year’s Global Summer Immersion Program in the Philippines on June 3 to 17, with the theme, “Modern Day Slavery: Combating Human Trafficking in the Philippines.” This year’s batch is composed of 21 graduate students of Social Work and 4 practitioners from USC.

Being under chronic crisis and poverty, the illegal trade of human beings for sexual exploitation or forced labor has long been a problem in the country. More and more Filipinos fall prey to human trafficking due to lack of employment and worsening economic conditions, exacerbated further by government corruption and neglect.

The program seeks to explore and compare social action and social change strategies used in the United States and the Philippines to curb human trafficking activities. UPM-DSS and USC partnered with government agencies, non-governmental and people’s organizations, and other international institutions to see how policy and social services are coordinated to rein in human trafficking.
The University Library of UP Diliman has subscribed to eight (8) multi-disciplinary and 24 highly specialized online databases covering various disciplines.

Five (5) out of 32 online databases are accessible in all Constituent Units of UP System, namely:

Academic OneFile

Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL)

ProQuest Central

ScienceDirect

Scopus

These databases may be accessed within UP System using any computer connected to its network or outside the campus using user login and password.

Below are the steps on how to access online data bases:

1. Visit the University Library web site of UP Diliman at http://www.mainlib.upd.edu.ph.

2. Click the "Online Subscriptions" link under the "Electronic Resources" menu on the left side of the page. An alphabetical list of online databases will appear on screen.

3. Select the online database you wish to search and click the link.

4. If you are accessing it remotely, click the remote access link and enter the user login and password.

5. Start searching using the basic search, advanced search or browse by publication title.

You may also access these online databases from the library web sites of the Constituent Units. For instance, http://library.uplb.edu.ph for UP Los Baños Main library; http://mainlibrary.upm.edu.ph/ for UP Manila University Library; and so on.

To get user login and password for remote access, you may email Ms. Marian S. Ramos of UP Main Library at updgenref@gmail or you can chat with the reference librarian on line at

http://www.mainlib.upd.edu.phf?q=ask-a-librarian.

Please be informed that the remote access account which is limited to bona fide members of the University is for your own use only. Do not share this account with non-UP members. Use of digital contents should be restricted to academic research and teaching purposes only.

To learn more about these data bases, web-based How To's and library instructional podcasts are also available at the UP Diliman University library web site and Iskwiki of the Diliman Interactive learning Center (DIIC) at http://iskwiki.upd.edu.ph/index.php/UniversityLibrary

We enjoin faculty members through the Deans and Chairs of the different department in the colleges/units of the Universrty to include in their syllabi relevant and scholarly electronic resources contained in these online databases. It is further recommended that the students be encouraged to consult these databases for their reading assignments, term reports, critiques, literature review for theses/dissertations and other research works.

To maximize use of the data bases, we further enjoin the faculty members to coordinate with the University library in their respective campus for an orientation and hands-on training on the use of online databases together with their students.

For request of library orientation, inquiries and other details, please contact your respective Head Librarian at your nearest campus library.

In addition, we would like to call your attention to the e-leaming resources linked to the ACADEMICS & RESEARCH Site at http://ovpaa.up.edu.ph/prot02/app/index-welcome.php

We encourage everyone to evaluate these resources carefully and make use of them to enhance our teaching, research and extension activities.

OCS: Online Pre-Enlistment for FS 2012-2013

ON-LINE PRE-ENLISTMENT FOR FIRST SEMESTER, 2012-2013 (For Students who Filled-out ESF on January 16 - 20, 2012)
Original post http://www.up.edu.ph/features.php?i=519

UP is inviting foreign-based Filipino and foreign professors and researchers to spend one to two months in UP to team teach courses, mentor graduate students, and collaborate in research and creative work with UP faculty and researchers. Under the UP Expanded Modernization Program, UP is launching the UP Visiting Professor Program in order to increase the number of mentors for young faculty and graduate students working on their MS, PhD or postdoctoral degrees, as well as improve and encourage the culture of research among its faculty.

UP invites you to participate actively in the development of UP as a research university. UP will provide support for air travel and a living allowance.

The UP Visiting Professor will be invited by (or matched with) a counterpart UP faculty researcher as a research collaborator, co-teacher of graduate courses and advanced undergraduate courses, and co-mentor or co-supervisor of MS, PhD or postdoctoral students. A work plan will be created to build and support the research collaboration and the research group consisting of the visiting professor, the UP faculty researcher and their graduate students.

The UP Visiting Professor is also encouraged to provide the UP faculty researcher and their graduate students the opportunity to visit his/her university and work in his/her laboratory if research funding is obtained. UP will provide support for a one- to two-month stay in the Philippines each year, for the roundtrip airfare and a reasonable living allowance. The UP Visiting Professor will be provided office space, keep a regular full schedule, and be given the opportunity to team teach courses, discuss research projects with graduate students, and train them to develop research concepts and methodologies, and write grant proposals and papers for publication.

An official appointment will be given to the UP Visiting Professor so that he/she becomes part of the UP’s faculty roster and thereby contributes to UP’s internationalization and international ranking. Moreover, research agreements, sandwich graduate programs or joint-degree granting programs between the UP Visiting Professor’s university and UP, with the UP Visiting Professor and the UP faculty researcher as lead persons, will be strongly encouraged.
