Even the slightest of weakness in any of skills listed below is an opportunity to improve SAT test scores.

We can boost the following skills that directly influence test scores:

Processing speed. Clearly the faster a student can work through the material the more time there is to think.

Reading accuracy and speed. Being able to read questions accurately and with the right meaning without having to re-read is another over-looked weakness in many students. Constant re-reading of complicated text is a time killer, and of course inaccurate or incomplete reading comprehension is a point destroyer.

Reading comprehension with metacognition, critical or inferential reading. Being able to read comfortably enough to think critically while reading -- called metacognition -- and to draw the correct inferences from text is a major part of what is being tested in the Critical Reading section of the SAT and any other exam testing cognitive abilities.

Abstract thinking and reasoning. Reasoning skills are tested heavily in the Critical Reading section and both skills come into play in the essay section. If essays are a particular concern, Gemm will add writing assignments to the Test Fundamentals protocol.

Impulsiveness. Careless errors are the cause of many a test let-down. Reading each answer to a multiple choice question before picking an answer, carefully reading instructions and questions, are all skills that can be improved.

Attention stamina. The SAT, ACT and ISEE are all tests of stamina. Being able to stay engaged for long periods is critical.

Working memory, retention . Multiple choice requires good working memory skills. This is often the hidden weak link in the learning make up of many children and a skill that can be improved.

Get the full story about SAT and ACT Test preparation for USA College Admissions
http://www.gemmlearning.com/SAT_skills.htm

****

College in USA Blog URL
http://college-in-usa.blogspot.com/
*******************************************************************************

USA College Standardized Admission Tests

Scholastic Assessment Test "SAT"

The SAT is used as a standard for colleges and universities to measure a student's reasoning abilities and predict college performance. The SAT tests math and verbal reasoning abilities, and compares it to the abilities of students from other high-schools. Each of the 2 sections on the SAT are scored from 200(lowest) to 800(highest), for a maximum of 1600.

SAT: Subject Tests

The SAT Subject Tests are 1-hour exams that include 5 subject categories: English, Mathematics, History, Science, and Foreign Languages. The SAT II has grown in importance, and is now a major component to most schools' admissions and course placement processes.

Students are often required to take 3 SAT II subject tests, in addition to the SAT I. Subject Tests are scheduled 6 times a year.

Preliminary SAT/National Merit Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT)

The PSAT is usually written by high-school sophomores and juniors each October. PSAT scores are used as a general prediction for future SAT scores. PSAT scores range from 20 to 80. To compare a PSAT score with a SAT score, multiply by 10.

American College Testing Program "ACT"

The ACT test consists of four 35-50 minute tests in English, math, reading, and science reasoning. ACT scores range from 36 to 1 (lowest). The ACT test acceptance as a substitute for the SAT I is expanding. Consult with your high-school counselor for specific colleges.

Advanced Placement "AP"

These 3-hour long Advanced Placement exams are based on AP high-school classes. The College Board administers these tests each May. The AP Exam scores range from 1 to 5. An AP score of 4 or above can allow high-school students to receive an initial college credit for the subject. Consult with your high-school counselor for specific colleges and allowed credits.

****

College in USA Blog URL
http://college-in-usa.blogspot.com/
***********************************************************************************

Three Reasons International Students do not get USA College Admission

Three Reasons International Students do not get USA College Admission

Money

You must have enough economic resources to support yourself with food, rent and local transportation, pay your college tuition, buy books and study materials before you get the USA student visa. Students with poor or unknown academic qualifications are usually denied.

English language skills

The higher your TOEFL score, the better your chances of getting a USA F1 Visa. Low TOEFL scores indicates students will not be able to study at a high academic level in English. However - Many suggest that USA college rankings are purchased.

Some people suggest that the ranking is pushed into a certain direction by the self interests of the "rankers" who sell ranking books or sell advertising in the college ranking books.

Some people suggest that college graduates try to influence the results. If you spent $50,000 or more getting a USA college degree - is it in your best interest to tell the world - I have a degree from the best college in the world - hire me - promote me !!!

Some people suggest that students who predominately go to one school cannot rank any other schools.

Some people suggest that the instructions and survey procedures and survey skills of the "ranking orgs" will change from school to school - therefore the results will not be equal or fair.

******

US News publishes USA College Ranking Information

When you look in the "Why do we rank section"

"Your investment in a college education could profoundly affect your career opportunities, financial well-being, and quality of life."

They are honest and say:

.. use the rankings as one tool to select and compare schools...

...we recognize that prospective students must consider their academic and professional goals, financial resources, scholastic record, and special needs when choosing a school.

.. we recommend that students gather information on colleges in a number of ways—by talking to parents, high school guidance counselors, and other advisers; from college catalogs, view books, and websites; and from campus visits to form first hand impressions.

When you look at the methodology section:

Best Values Methodology: These rankings were based on three variables:

1. Ratio of quality to price:
2. Percentage of all undergraduates receiving need-based scholarships or grants
3. Average discount: percentage of a school's 2006-2007 total costs

The ratio of quality to price accounted for 60 percent of the overall score, the percentage of all undergraduates receiving need-based grants accounted for 25 percent, and the average discount accounted for 15 percent. The school with the highest total weighted points became No. 1 in its category. The other schools were then ranked in descending order.

If you want all the details - you have to buy the premium issue - Pay $$$ for the detailed information. The free info is an excellent tease - to get you to buy the books. Remember that Ranking USA colleges in the USA is Big Business to US News. Not that anything is wrong with that !!

College is a big investment - many people are paid to advertise, promote, push, suggest, rank and influence the college attendance of prospective students.

******

College in USA Blog URL
http://college-in-usa.blogspot.com/

Immigration in USA is an information blog that will cover immigration topics, provide web resources information articles, how to immigrate tips, who to contact, what to prepare, how to start, what to expect, English language training requirements and job training.

USA College English Language Requirements

To enter College in the USA international students require English levels and skills equivalent to (new) Toefl 550 and the graduate schools require Toefl 600.

This is a detailed description of English language skill levels that international students should have to be successful in a USA College.

Writing

Student can: demonstrate fluent ability in performing moderately complex writing tasks; link sentences and paragraphs to form coherent texts to express ideas on familiar or abstract topics, with some support for main ideas, and with an appropriate sense of audience; write routine business letters, letters of inquiry, cover letters for applications and personal and formal social messages; write down a set of simple instructions, based on clear oral communication; fill out complex formatted documents; extract key information and relevant detail from a page-long text and write an outline or a one-paragraph summary; demonstrate good control over common sentence patterns, coordination and subordination, and spelling and mechanics.

Student writing introduces the purpose of the work, expresses main ideas and gives details, conveys essential information to the reader, uses format and content appropriate for intended audience, demonstrates adequate vocabulary for the topic. Whether you're looking for prospective colleges to attend or you need to know whether a certain neighborhood has a nearby elementary school for your child, using an online school finder can save a tremendous amount of time and effort.

For aspiring college students, a school finder can help narrow a nationwide search for a suitable university. You can conduct searches across thousands of colleges while focusing on a variety of criteria that are important to you. That will help you find a school that can offer the college experience you'd like to enjoy.

For parents, a school finder can help them search for elementary, middle and high schools across the country. This can help them decide whether a move to a certain area is a good decision.

How A School Finder Helps Aspiring College Students

With thousands of colleges from which to choose, the decision of which to attend can be difficult (especially when choosing a college far from home). Your college experience can have a significant impact on your life. The people you meet and the experiences you share can create friendships that last a lifetime.

A school finder can make your decision easier by narrowing your choice based upon the elements that are most important to you. For example, if you prefer to attend a small college, you can search for universities with a small student body. If you'd like to get involved in on-campus groups, a school finder can help you find a college that offers a variety of such groups. You can also search by the types of degrees offered, locations of the schools and available scholarships. Using an online school finder makes the traditional chore of reading college packets tedious and practically irrelevant.

How A School Finder Helps Parents

Parents can use a school finder to locate schools within certain districts, cities, or counties. If you're planning to move or relocate, you can use this tool to determine whether certain neighborhoods offer a school for your children.

You can also search for a school based upon the type of education offered. For example, if your child requires the need for special educational services, a school finder will help locate elementary, middle and high schools that offer such services. If you prefer a school that can offer vocational or alternative programs for your child, you can locate such schools using this tool. For parents, this can be invaluable for deciding whether moving to a certain city or neighborhood is a good idea.

Using A School Finder To Save Time

Instead of spending hours on the phone or reading pamphlets, use a school finder to save time and narrow your search based upon your criteria. It can make the job of finding a school easier and time-efficient. Whether you're looking for a university that offers the perfect college experience or an elementary school for your child, an online school finder literally puts the education system at your fingertips.

Using the Internet to find a college by JIM MACKEY
http://www.amazines.com/view_author.cfm?authorid=31393&#AuthorArticles

*********

College in USA BLOG URL
http://college-in-usa.blogspot.com/

Free ESL in USA Blog of US universities, colleges, schools, ESL English as a second language schools, private institutes, charter schools, private academies, university programs, college classes, private English classes, English teachers, ESL tutors, instructors, professors, ESL English lessons, ESL education resources, homestay, educational coaching, education consulting services, student resources, information and advice across the continental United States, North America and Hawaii.

How to Study Efficiently in College

Here are some benefits to studying for your college classes the right way: more leisure time, less stress, less pressure from your parents, less debt, better grades, and better career opportunities. Sound worthwhile? That doesn’t mean there isn’t work involved, but it’s how you accomplish the work that matters. You can either work smarter, or keep spinning your wheels while barely hanging on to passing grades. Follow these tips to make the most of your time and mental resources:

Establish Successful Habits. Here’s a simple formula: Successful habits lead to success and unsuccessful habits lead to failure. Commit to studying by establishing a set time and place. Eliminate distractions, turn off your cell phone and for that time period dedicate 100 percent of your energy to learning.

Get Roommate Cooperation: Discuss with your roommate the best times for you to study. Make that time off-limits to guests and loud distractions.

Prepare. Read the topic chapters before the lecture. (If you haven’t purchased the book yet, now is the time to do it!) This will get you familiar with the material and give you an indication of what the professor thinks is most important by what is stressed in the lecture.

Take Notes. As you read, write notes on what you think are the important points. Then, during the lecture, use a highlighter to mark your reading notes when the professor touches on the same points. Take new notes on material that is not in your book or that you did not already write down.

Study More Often for Less Time. Cram sessions are the least effective way to learn and retain information. It may sound cool to pull an all-nighter, but actually, you’re wasting your time as it prevents your brain and body from functioning at peak levels. Break up your study sessions into 45-minute blocks with a 10-15 minute break in between. Grab something to eat, stretch, or go for a walk. This gives your brain a chance to absorb the material. Of course this requires that you plan ahead instead of waiting to crack open your book the night before!

Study in Groups. Studying with other people helps to reinforce the material by discussing, clarifying, and repeating it in your own words. In addition, it also forces you to commit to a time and place to study since other people are counting on you.

Relate it to Real Life. It’s much easier to digest and remember information in the context of a story or personal example than memorizing a bunch of unrelated facts. Whenever you can, relate the material to real life. Find examples in your personal experiences, music, books, current news stories, business, pop culture, or case studies. Need help? Ask your professor!

Susan Fee is a licensed counselor and author of the college survival guide, 'My Roommate Is Driving Me Crazy! Is the test a written test only? Do you have to read a text?Do you have to listen to a conversation on tape? How much speaking is required? What type of questions will be asked? What type of answers are required? Students must understand how the English information is presented, what English skills are being tested, and how answers must be submitted.

Second step is to understand the volume of advanced English skills and vocabulary required to score high on these tests. Students must have studied and practiced English for 2500 to 5000 hours counting school classes and self study.

Students require a vocabulary of between 8,000 and 15,000 words to score high on the new TOEFL, TOEIC, AP, IELTS and Cambridge tests.

To score high students require all four English skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening), technical language structure knowledge (grammar) and the application of the grammar knowledge in the active productions of speaking and writing.

The "secret tips" of using specific words that have a higher percentage of occurrence in the correct answers may give you the opportunity to raise your score from 0 to 1 %. If your vocabulary is less than 8000 words or your listening skills or writing less than advanced then you will still fail despite using all the "secret tips" or "secret vocabulary indicating correct answers".

Everyone knows that cramming helps memorizing facts for a short time but does very little for the practice of the application skills. All new English tests are a combination offacts and the application of English skills including technical grammar knowledge. Students who only cram for tests will fail most of the new tests as answers require the application of English grammar skills. The students who cram can only help some of their factual knowledge if they can remember it perfectly. I have never met a student who can remember crammed English facts correctly.

Students become upset when they read questions they cannot answer, questions they cannot understand, words they do not know the meaning of, or "secret words" that occur in two or more answers.

Remember students that are prepared have less chance of becoming upset. Students that are rested, relaxed and arrive on time at the test site will score higher on the tests.

What English Should I study to PASS English Tests?

Diagram showing the overlap between the English concentrations

There is only one English language. There are a variety of programs and courses that overlap each other. Many business English courses cover 90% of what students require to pass the TOEIC exam. Many advanced English courses cover 90 % of what is required to pass TOEFL, TOEIC, AP, IELTS and other English tests.

Many Toeic, toefl, IELTS courses only provide practice tests without teaching any vocabulary the four English skills and applied grammar practice. Students must create a plan to increase all applied English skills, vocabulary and become comfortable with the test requirements and answer formats.

Students can take combinations of programs and still pass tests.

For example: Advanced students could take 100 hours of business English, 200 hours of academic preparation and 10 hours of toefl and score high on the new Toefl test . The only secret is to have a balance of applied English skills and factual knowledge. The following is an example of a balanced study program.

EXAMPLE PLAN TO PASS ENGLISH TESTS

20% vocabulary

15% grammar comprehension

15% reading comprehension

15% listening comprehension

15% writing skills, short answer and essay

15% speaking skills

5% practicing test formats

Original Post

http://www.eslincanada.com/passtests.html

******

College in USA Blog URL
http://college-in-usa.blogspot.com/

TOEFL TOEIC IELTS Cambridge Test Information includes preparation, exam questions, quizes, essays, short answer, listening, speaking, conversation, pronunciation, vocabulary, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, grammar and writing composition.
