Collectors love NASCAR model cars and one big reason is the car races the many people enjoy watching. Collecting the famous cars and not just the winners but all the cars in the starting and finishing line ups is a hobby of many collectors.

So where do you find the best NASCAR models to add to a collection. A successful model car collector will make a treasure hunt out of finding the best cars to add to his or her collection. Many model car collectors will zero in a number of ways. One way is to collect model cars driven by their favorite driver. Some of the other ways are to collect models from only their favorite races.

Whatever your car collecting niche is the sixty four thousand dollar question is where to find them. Forget the local department stores as the quality is low and they are the same that everyone has. The first choice in finding quality NASCAR models is many of the local hobby shops carry a limited selection of some of the top quality car model kits.

To zero in on a certain manufacture or certain brand of car model kits one of the best places to start your search is eBay. Second there are many secondary suppliers of car model kits. Some of the other options that provide top kits are Amazon. By digging a little deeper there are flea markets and your favorite model car forum will share information on resources. There can be the occasional yard sale where you can find that one model you are looking for.

On our site we provide some of the best resources but by no means do we have access to all the resources there are available on the internet. Some of our readers have notified us of other model cars they would like to see that we added.

The Appeal of Maisto Model Cars

Maisto model cars are considered to be some of the very best on the market today. The method to their appeal is two-fold: First, their replica models are absolutely perfect, and some of the most highly detailed models in production. Second, their toy cars are really imaginative and a lot of fun, even for adults.

Maisto model cars employs fewer than fifty people, total. This includes everyone who models the cars, the guys who go out and photograph the new models for reference, the upper management, and even the people who answer the phones. All of the design is handled in house by a small team of artists.

We point this out as an example of the integrity of the company. Maisto aren't out to make a quick buck on chintzy products, or else they'd be willing to hire any halfway decent car modeler who walks into their office. Rather, Maisto is only looking to hire the best of the best, passionate gearheads with a real love for cars and an almost unhealthy obsession with attention to detail.

This hiring practice pays off. When you look at a 1:24 scale model from Maisto Model Cars, you'll be able to count every screw and built on the body. Take a picture of a Maisto model, hold it up to a picture of the real deal, and nine times out of ten, you won't be able to tell the difference.

Maisto produces snap together kits, diecast models and high skill level model kits. If you really want the best detail, we recommend the high skill level kits. They take awhile to put together, but you really get an appreciation of what goes into these kits when you put them together yourself.

Those toy model cars we referenced earlier, on the other hand, don't really look anything like any real car on the market today. With the flip of a switch via remote control, their RC cars will transform into robots and launch foam darts at one another. In other words, these are the RC cars we wish we had to play with as kids.

These toy cars actually provide a lot of the income for the company, allowing them to take more risks in their scale modeling. For example, a perfect scale model of a Studebaker might not be the best selling item on the market, but because Maisto is also a toy company, they can afford to release other products that only a small handful of diehard gearheads will really appreciate.

Tamiya Model Kits

Tamiya Inc. founded in 1946 by Yoshio Tamiya in Shizuoka Japan. Tamiya Model Kits manufactures plastic model kits, cars, airplanes, sailboats and many tools and modeling supplies.

Tamiya builds accurate and with a high degree of detail. Known by modelers and hobbyist the world over for their attention to detail and accuracy and high quality, their philosophy “First in Quality Around the World”.

Back in the 60s Tamiya produced models of Formula One beginning with the Honda F1. They became a sponsor of Team Lotus in 1991 and have paid royalties to racing teams their models were based on over the years.

The home of Tamiya America is in Irvine, California which is responsible for the North, Central and South America branch of their racing developments. Tamiya America maintains a racing facility located in Aliso Viejo, California. There are a number of events held there.

The Tamiya mascot named “Plastic Model Moko-chan” with his rabbit sidekick named “Rabbi-kun” appeared in Japanese pamphlets and comics to draw attention to the release of Tamiya models. The mascot and sidekick would show kids how to build the new models and keep them up to date on the new models they were producing. This process was in the comic format which included a bilingual series of publications that carried the title “RC Lecture By Moko-chan” to teach the kids RC car care and maintenance. The mascots are no longer used but the characters still have a huge following.

There is quite a story behind Ed Roth “Big Daddy” and his Hot Rods, Monsters and Airplanes. Growing up in Beverly Hills in 1932 when he was born in a German household. Ed started out learning to speak English and draw. Ed’s dad Henry wanted to keep Ed and his brothers out of trouble as young boys. So he kept them supplied with tools and plenty of supplies and a workshop. Being a top quality German cabinet maker Henry taught Ed the ins and outs of making things out of wood. Ed learned how to make some crazy stuff out of wood.

Ed became Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, a hot-roddin' gear head, mad scientist and struggling artist who financed his inventions by selling drawings and t-shirts at drag events, fairs and car shows. Ed would draw cartoons of monsters that he created and pictures of cars. But when he personally airbrushed t-shirts with the monsters driving the cars, people went crazy and would line up at his booth.

Revell American produced model car kits that featured the "Beatnik Bandit" and "Road Agent". Other model kits included "Rat Fink" and the gang a group of hot-roddin monsters.

Ed Roth's artwork can be found throughout the late 80's and mid 90's in underground comics produced by Roth and Sloane. You can also find Roth's artwork in tattoo parlors and in art galleries.

The doctors said it was a heart attack that took out Ed Roth on April, 4th 2001. Ed Roth has created a timeless monster. Rat Fink and the Gang will still reach the diverse demographic appeal of the young adults of today and us baby boomers of the fifties. Rat Fink and the gang will continue into the new millennium capturing a new group of Finks young and old for decades to come.

AMC Javelin

American Motor’s entry into the “pony car” markets for the model years 1968 through 1974 the AMC Javelin. There were two distinct generations of Javelins; the first ran from 1968 through 1970. The second started with a new design for 1970 that was produced through 1974. The AMC Javelin proved itself by competing very successfully at Trans-AM racing. The AMC Javelin had AMC sponsorship for 1971 and 1972.

The AMC Javelins were popular in other parts of world being assembled under license in Australia, Europe and Mexico and marketed in a number of other international markets.

The Javelin was to be a rival for the pony car market to compete with the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro. A prototype AMC AMX displayed during the 1966 AMX project nationwide tour. Then later made it debut in 1968 with two power options. The AMC Javelin was available with a 232 cubic inch six cylinder and three V8 options a 290 cubic inch and the all time favorite the “Go Package” complete with four barrel carburetor a 343 cubic inch. This package featured dual exhausts, wide tires and front disk brakes.

For a greater class of luxury AMC produced the SST trim package. By the middle of 1968 AMC introduced the third engine option with the 390 cubic inch V8 with the AMX 390 Javelin. At 315 hp and 425 ft-lbs of torque and 0 to 60 in seven seconds AMC had a winner.

In 1968 even Road & Track compared the Javelin to the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camero, and the Plymouth Barracuda. It was said to be roomier had a more powerful engine and arguably the cleanest of the lot. And it proved to be a true statement because it sold like “HotCakes” with more than 56,000 in 1968.

The AMC Javelin earned a place of honor in the American Muscle Car market and will make a find addition to any collection. Here are some of the top models available.

Oldsmobile Cutlass

The Cutlass began in 1954 as kind of an experimental sports coupe with a stock V8 Oldsmobile engine. The Oldsmobile Cutlass introduced as a unibody car in 1961 by General Motors. Early on the Cutlass name achieved brand equity and became very popular. Later on the bean counters kind of created a lot of confusion in the marketplace by using the Cutlass name on so many different vehicles. With all these cars baring the name; Cutlass Calais compact, Cutlass Ciera midsize, Cutlass Cruiser station-wagon and the Cutlass Supreme personal luxury car.

1961 the first year started with F-85 as a two door sedan and a four door sedan in deluxe or the base trim packages. Also a four door station-wagon but sales were disappointing. By May Oldsmobile introduced the Cutlass sports coupe sporting unique trim. Bucket seats with center console a four barrel carburetor and V8 with 185 hp. The engine was also an option along with the 4 speed transmission on the F-85s.

With the introduction of the Cutlass sales jumped to 97,382 in 1962 with a convertible added to the line-up.

The existing F-85 models returned in 1962, and a convertible was added to the line-up in September, available in both standard and Cutlass versions. Overall F-85 sales rose to 97,382, with the Cutlass displacing the four-door Deluxe sedan as the top-selling model. With more exciting news the Jetfire Cutlass with a hardtop was introduced with a turbocharged V8 at 215 hp. The Jetfire was not well received because of its higher cost, soft suspension and poor instrumentation.

Second generation intermediate with a production run from 1964-1967 the new intermediate F-85 now rode a conventional chassis body-on-frame. Wheelbase stretched from 115 inches, overall length to 203 inches, and adding weight by more than 300 pounds. Its aluminum V8 and the Roto-Hydramatic were discontinued in favor of a new cast-iron small-block V8 of 330 cubic inch V8 and an optional two-speed Jetaway automatic transmission.

With the demise of Oldsmobile and many really great years of quality cars have created some very fine collectables models and real cars. For the model car collector finding them can be a real task. We have provided a what we could find here but they are going fast.

The muscle car produced by Oldsmobile was the now famous 442 introduced as an options package for the Cutlass and F-85. So popular it became a model of its own from 1968 through 1971. It then dropped back to an options package through the mid 1970s.

With the muscle car drive and competition going on and not to be left out the Oldsmobile 442 arose to compete with the Pontiac GTO. The Pontiac GTO proved to be such a big success in the early 60s that a hasty response by Oldsmobile produced the first 442.

The Oldsmobile 442 kind of got its name based on the big 4 barrel carburetor, the 4 speed transmission and dual exhaust. The option available for any Cutlass or F-85 except the station-wagon, and most all were the hardtop coupes. A hot tip for car collectors there were only about 10 of the 4 door sedans constructed with the 442 (B09) option.

Very impressive stats for the 442 were noted by Motor Trend. The 3,440 lb car got a 15.5 sec quarter mile at 90 mph. It would also make a scalding run to 60 mph in 7.5 sec.

By 1965 with the sanctioning of the muscle cars by GM’s bean counters, Oldsmobile jumped in with both feet. They added the big engine a 400 cubic inch (6.6L) engine and renamed the car 442. The definition of the 442 was restated as 400 cubic inches, 4 barrel carburetor and 2 exhausts. The new engine’s output was 345 hp at 440 ft-lbs. The 442 came standard with a 3 speed manual transmission but as an option you could get the 4 speed.

The 1965 model 442’s was the first to have as standard the Hurst Shifter when the HD 3 speed manual transmission was ordered. At the time in 1965 Modern Rod reported the stats for one of the 442’s with slicks, headers and a 4 speed transmission smoked the quarter mile in 13.78 sec at 102.73 mph. Even the automatic version blasted through the quarter in 15.5 sec at 89 mph and also 0 to 60 in 7.8 sec. With these numbers the sales rose to 25,003 cars.

Model Pontiac Fiero

A unique mid-engine cool sports car the Pontiac Fiero built by Pontiac from 1984 through 1988. The unique name had duel meaning; in Spanish in meant “Wild” in Italian it meant “Proud”. The Fiero was designed by a car designer by the name Hulk Aldikacti to be a sports car for Pontiac. The Pontiac Fiero a two-seater sports car one of the first since the coupes built in 1926 to 1938.

It is also billed as the first ever and only mass-produced mid-engine sports car ever manufactured in the U.S.A. Some of the other names considered for the Fiero were (Firebird XP, Fiamma, P3000, Pegasus and Sprint. It made the Car and Driver magazine’s one of the ten best list in 1984. It was even chosen as the Official Pace Car of the Indianapolis 500 over the 1984 Chevrolet Corvette. As the standard for the day the bean counters of General Motors were opposed to another two-seater sports car. Management thought they were better off with just the Corvette. The 1979 oil crisis lit fire under the bean counters and dipped into their pockets, so the design work on a fuel efficient Pontiac Fiero began.

A version of the Pontiac Fiero that was fuel efficient with a 2.5 L 4 cylinder touting 27 mpg city and 40 mpg on the highway. The revolutionary economy-ratio transmission helped to achieve these numbers.

In 1985 with the oil crisis being over the demand for more power for the rear-engine sports and Pontiac responded. A GT model Fiero with upgraded suspension and a V6 with more horsepower were produced.

Many changes came in 1988 and the most significant were a redesigned suspension and better brakes with a new two piece calipers and upgraded rotors. Some of the more interesting improvements were improvements in power options. But the planned DOHC engines and turbochargers never made it before the production ended.

The bean counters dropped production quoting insufficient future profits claiming a decrease in demand for the two-seater sports car. The bean counters were proved wrong because the actual sales were double the forecast still making a nice profit.

Chevrolet Corvette

The Chevrolet Corvette made its first appearance in 1953. The now famous classic Chevrolet Corvette got its cool name from a sailing warship back in 1856-1887. The warship was a smaller frigate somewhat larger the standard coastal patrol ships of the day. But Corvette frigates were big enough to handle a single gun deck.

In the beginning in 1953 the first of the classic Chevrolet Corvettes were built by hand by the customer delivery center up in Flint, Michigan. Still suffering a shortage of metal from World War II there was a new product developed called fiberglass. The first of the hand-made bodies for the Corvettes were made out of this revolutionary new product.

Standard Chevrolet parts were used for the chassis to build the new Corvettes. The famed Blue Flame inline six-cylinder truck motor with the 2 speed powerglide automatic transmission was used in the first models. The Corvette had drum brakes but the gutless inline six got some power modifications. It included a three carb intake manifold for some extra excitement. Early in 1954 a Paxton supercharger became an option installed by the dealer for more power.

The Chevrolet Corvette project would have died a quick death and be left in history. If it wasn’t for the introduction of Chevrolet's first V-8 in 1955 the 265 cubic inch engine breathed new life into the project. The new V-8 was paired with a new three speed manual transmission which provided the needed extra power for the Corvette. This turned the new car into a real performer. Another factor to the popularity was the competition from Ford's new Thunderbird in 1955. You know Chevrolet would not be outdone.

The Ferrari 400 and Ferrari 412 were front-engine 2+2 coupes designed by the Italian manufacturer Ferrari. They were available with the 5-speed all synchromesh or an optional 3-speed automatic transmission unit from General Motors. Their design was almost identical and looking like the 365 GT4 2+2 version of the famous Daytona. Production began in 1976, when Ferrari revealed its first car fitted with an automatic transmission - the 400 - at the Paris Motorshow of 1976. With the improved 412 introduced in 1985 it was phased out in 1989. The sleek, Pininfarina-designed lines and relatively limited production numbers may give it potential as a future classic. It was not universally loved however, and is listed at #18 in the BBC's book of "Crap Cars", sandwiched between the Daihatsu Applause and the Austin Ambassador.

400 Automatic and 400 GT

The 400 Automatic or 400A used the General Motors Turbo-Hydramatic THM400 automatic transmission, while the 400 GT used a 5-speed all synchromesh transmission.

The engine, based on the Daytona's 4.4 L 268 cu in, was a 4.8 L 294 cu in V12; front mounted and driving the rear wheels, the traditional GT car layout allowed Ferrari to fit four seats into the stylish coupe.

The 400 was improved for 1985 with an increase in displacement to 4.9 L 302 cu in. ABS was offered for the first time on a Ferrari; the manual and automatic transmissions were both retained.

The Ferrari 330 cars are the successor of the 250 GTO, introduced by Ferrari in 1963. The first 330 America was simply a 250 GT/E with a larger engine, and the 330 GTC/GTS shared their chassis with the 275. Only the 330 GT 2+2 was a truly unique product. Production ended in 1968 with the introduction of the Ferrari 365 series.

All 330 models used an evolution of the 400 Superamerica's 4.0 L Colombo V12 engine. It was substantially changed for the 330 cars, it had wider bore spacing and used of a true alternator rather than a dynamo generator.

The 1963 330 America shared the outgoing 250 GTE's chassis but not its engine, being powered by the new Type 209, 300 hp at 6600 rpm, 4.0 L engine.

50 330 Americas were built making them very rare and true collectible cars for any collection.

It is a descriptive name for a type of open wheel cars that participate in the Indianapolis 500. The name is used in American Championship Car Racing. Some time ago the race cars were referred to as “Championship Cars” or a more ambiguous term “Big Cars”. The terms were used to separate them from the similar Sprint and Midgets which were also open-wheel cars. Somewhere along the way the name changed to “Indy Car” as a fundamental link to the Indianapolis 500 racing. Indy Car also separated the open-wheel car from others like the ones used in “Formula One” also.

Also IndyCar Series an open-wheel racing series sanctioned by the “Indy Racing League”. The trademark IndyCar has been in use since 2003. A subsidiary of Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation is the owner of the IndyCar trademark at this time and licenses its use to the Indy Racing League to be used in connection with the IndyCar Series.

Championship Auto Racing Teams a governing body adopted the name Indy Car World Series for the premiere open-wheel series in the United States. First registered by Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1992 the Indy Car trademark was licensed to CART from 1992-1997.

The De Lorean was not well received by the car buying public and automotive magazines kind of gave it the snub. The first vehicles had impressive waiting lists of anxious consumer’s. The sticker price of $25,000 was not in reach for the majority of the buyers. The general public considered it to be an under-powered and impractical toy. Road & Track labeled it as not a “not a barn burner" with a 0-60 mph time of 10.5 seconds. With sad numbers like that it was just not quick enough for a sports/GT car in this price category. The stainless steel body panels may have worked well for the “flux dispersal” and was an attractive design. Even the concept was impervious to corrosion. But in practice the surface tended to show fingerprints.

The cars could not be easily painted. The dealerships painted their cars on delivery to help make them more distinctive. De Lorean was testing the use of a translucent paint to provide different color options on the cars. This was to allow the stainless steel grain to show through. There was only one factory option initially available, and that was an automatic transmission. And somewhat later a grey interior was available, later in 1981 as an alternative to the standard black. Some other accessories including pin-striping and luggage racks appeared later for individuality.

The De Lorean DMC-12 made it to the list of one of the worst 50 cars ever produced. The car was too heavy and the 2.8 liter Peugeot V6 was just not enough power to push the over-priced car.

The Giugiaro-designed DMC-12 sure was cool looking, though. As of August of this year, a Texas company that controls the rights to the name announced it will build a small number of new DMC-12's. What do you think about that for time travel?

The Ferrari 250 GTO was intended and designed to compete in GT racing. The Chief engineer Giotto Bizzarrini put the 3.0 L V12 engine from the 250 Testa Rossa into the chassis from the 250 GT SWB and collaborated with designer Sergio Scaglietti to develop the body. Soon after Bizzarrini and most other Ferrari engineers were fired in a dispute with Enzo Ferrari, development was handed over to new engineer Mauro Forghieri, who worked with Scaglietti to continue development of the body. Wind tunnel and track testing was performed. The Farrari 250 GTO unlike most Ferraris was not designed by a specific individual.

This Ferrari was typical of early-1960s Ferrari technology with a hand-welded tube frame, A-arm front suspension, live-axle rear end, disc brakes, and Borrani wire wheels. The transmission was a five-speed gearbox new to Ferrari GT racing cars; the metal gate that defined the shift pattern would become a tradition that is still maintained in current models. The interior was very basic, to the point where a speedometer was not installed in the instrument panel. Its switches came from the Fiat 500, and it was said that as the car was rushed into production, even the cloth seats were made from workers' overalls.
