The coin that stole the limelight was the 2010-P Hot Springs 5 oz Silver Uncirculated Coin that had 134 left on Sunday, May 8 and then reached its maximum on Thursday, May 12.

The four new items were the Mount Hood Quarter Three-Coin Set which debuted at 11,282, the American Gold Eagle Uncirculated Coin which opened at 1,098, and two new Eliza Johnson First Spouse Gold Coins. Her proof version started with 1,331 and her uncirculated hit 777.

Several sets had a good week. The 2011 Proof Set gained 11,363 and the 2011 Mint Set added 8,663. All four silver sets were made available on Friday, May 6 and each one received positive gains. The 2011 Silver Proof let the silver group with 4,831.

Quarter Set, Eagle and Spouse Coins Debut

The United States Mint has published the debuting sales figures for three products that were introduced last week — the Mount Hood Quarter Three-Coin Set, the 2011 Uncirculated Gold Eagle, and the Eliza Johnson First Spouse Gold Coins. The Uncirculated Gold Eagle launched Thursday, and is likely the product many collectors are most interested in given its two-year absence from the Mint’s numismatic portfolio. Its debut sales were 1,098 as of Monday, which was slower than perhaps expected. Sales were pressured no doubt by an opening price that was much higher than any past issue and a …

Eliza Johnson Coin Debut

It has been 22 weeks since the United States Mint last released new First Spouse Gold Coins, but the long wait did not improve the debut sales of the Eliza Johnson Coins. Die hard fans of the series picked up 2,108 of them between their launch on Thursday, May 5 and Sunday, May 8. Eliza Johnson’s inaugural figures were slower than several recent releases, as the table below demonstrates. Mary Lincoln and Buchanan’s Liberty issues both did exceedingly well during their debut, while Johnson’s was less than half of either of them. Perhaps the record high price of gold put a damper on the …

5 Oz Silver Uncirculated Coins Gone

Making headlines is the Hot Springs Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin sell out and the fast moving American Silver Eagle bullion coins. Also, proof sets are back on top of the charts according to the latest United States Mint sales figures. Earlier Thursday, the US Mint enacted their "waiting list" for the Hot Springs issue after orders hit the limit of 27,000. The United States Mint message displayed on its online store read in part: "If a product becomes available due to an order cancellation, we will fulfill orders from the waiting list on a first-in, first-served basis."…

5-Ouncers Don’t Quite Sell Out

The Mint just could not quite sell out of its supplies of America the Beautiful 5-ounce silver coins in this reporting period. The collector version of the Hot Springs design nearly made it to the 27,000 number available but is still 134 short of a sellout. The coin was still offered on the Mint’s Web site May 11. For the two 2011 bullion versions, the Gettysburg and Glacier, the numbers are 1,300 shy of initial supplies of each. The Mint can strike more, but has not yet indicated …

Hot Springs Coins Max Out

Earlier Thursday, orders for last week’s hot ticket item, the 2010-P Hot Springs National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin, reached its maximum. The silver coins were released on April 28, and 26,866 sold as of Sunday, May 8. The final 134 were scooped up in the last few days, causing the US Mint to instigate their "waiting list" so that any Hot Spring orders that are canceled can still be sold on a first-in, first-served basis. In other US Mint sales news, one annual set dominated recent collector attention and …

The biggest newsmaker was the debuting 2010-P Hot Springs Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin which sold approximately 25,000 out of 27,000.

49 products in all outperformed their prior sales gains, including all of the commemoratives, for the second week in a row, and every Presidential $1 Coin Cover. Even the one-quarter ounce American Gold Eagle Proof Coin got a lot of action by adding 1,540 in this round versus 1,313 in the last.

Missing in the sales numbers, however, was the 2011 Presidential $1 Coin Uncirculated Set that launched Wednesday, April 27, and dropping in sales numbers were the Andrew Johnson $1 Coin Rolls from Philadelphia and all four of the silver proof sets.

ATB 5 Oz Silver Near Sell Out

The latest round of United States Mint sales figures show several interesting product developments, including the near sell out of the three recently issued America the Beautiful 5 ounce Silver Coins. The US Mint placed the collector Hot Springs National Park 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin on sale Thursday. 19,000 of the 27,000 sold by the evening. Around 2,000 remained as of late Monday afternoon. It would appear the Hot Springs issue is destined to sell out before the Mint is scheduled to lift its one per coin household limit on …

Mary Lincoln Gold Coin Dominates

The dominate coin in the remaining First Spouse Gold Coin pool was the proof Mary Lincoln coin, for the first time in three weeks. It was also the only one to outperform its prior week’s sales. More than half of the First Spouse coins sold were Mary Lincoln proof coins, which was 78 out of 152 in all. In the last round, the ratio was 53 out of 227. As for the other two coins, collectors picked up 47 of the Mary Lincoln uncirculated and 27 of the Abigail Fillmore proofs. Fillmore’s proof was the leader in the last report with a surge of 90, but it was classified as "sold out" today at noon after the US Mint launched …

5 Oz Silver Coins Lead

There was a stark contrast between the newest United States Mint numismatic product and the annual silver sets. The debuting 2010-P Hot Springs 5 oz. Uncirculated Silver Coin lead sales while the sets spiraled down during their sales suspension. US Mint sets struggled and lost sales. The Mint suspended the 2010-dated Silver Proof Set and America the Beautiful (ATB) Quarters Silver Proof Set around April 9. Then they halted the 2011-dated sets on April 18. In this round of weekly sales figures, the 2011 ATB Silver Proof Set plummeted by -70, the 2011 Silver Proof Set dropped by -54, the 2010 …

Gold Eagle Sales Rate Dropping

Sales of the 2011 proof gold American Eagle coin options slowed dramatically this week. Buyers grabbed just 4,090 more one-ounce coins, the most popular option so far. Also purchased were an additional 782 half-ounce pieces, 1,540 quarter ouncers and 3,025 tenth ouncers. The full set saw another 1,557 taken by collectors. Compared to the 2010 offer last October, these numbers are weak. The 2010 Hot Springs 5-ounce collector coin has not yet sold out six days into the sales period …

Hot Springs Silver Coin Debut

The highs and lows in this week’s sales report include the new five ounce uncirculated 2010-P Hot Springs Silver Coin that pounced on the scene with a near sell out and the retreating annual silver sets. Proof Gold Eagles held on to some of their previous week’s launch momentum, and the commemorative coins surged. The hot number of the week was the new 2010-P Hot Springs silver coin. Even though the concept of a five ounce duplicate of the new quarter-dollar series received mixed reviews from many numismatists early …

That number was reached between the launch on Thursday, April 21 and Sunday, April 24.

Two sets had handsome gains, while sales of four annual silver sets were still suspended. The 2011 Mint Set went up by 17,210 and the 2011 Proof Set rose by 11,836. One interesting figure, though, was the inclusion of the suspended 2011 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set that launched on April 1. The first recorded sales total came in at 78,054.

The other big news maker was the release of two 2011 America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coins. 153,400 of the Gettysburg and Glacier National Park coins were scooped up by the Mint’s Authorized Purchasers right after they were made available.

America the Beautiful Silver Coin Sales

Demand for United States Mint numismatic products turned higher for major coins and sets, the bureau’s latest sales figures underscore.
Coin Prices Higher, Fillmore Proof Up

Prices rose by $25 for First Spouse Gold Coins for the second time in April. Also springing up was demand for the oldest coin while activity for the remaining two coins eased just a bit in the latest round of US Mint sales figures. On Wednesday, April 27, the United States Mint increased their numismatic gold coin prices due to their pricing policy that uses the London Fix weekly average price of gold as a gauge for market value. The US Mint increased First Spouse proof coins from $904 to $929 and uncirculated coins from $891 to …

The United States Mint added a few more products to their weekly sales report. Official sales numbers for the 2011 America the Beautiful 5 Ounce Silver Bullion Coins and the 2011 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set were proclaimed. In just one day, US Mint Authorized Purchasers ordered a total of 153,400 of the Gettysburg and Glacier National Park silver bullion coins, which leaves 99,600 available. The Mint released the silver coins on Monday, April 25. The US Mint decided to produce 253,000 or 126,500 of each …

Buyers Grab Proof Gold Eagles

The new 2011 proof gold American Eagle coins went on sale April 21 and the chart below has the numbers of each sales option sold by April 25 when these numbers were compiled. They send mixed signals, because they are neither weak numbers nor are they strong. The 7,249 of the one-ounce coin sold represents nearly a quarter of the projected mintage. The debut sales were not as strong as 2010’s opening numbers, but they were stronger than 2008’s debut. The US Mint did not strike proof gold Eagles in 2009 …

The latest United States Mint’s collector coin sales figures revealed the Grand Canyon Set was the third best seller of all of the numismatic offerings.

Two other sets had more sales. They were the 2011 Mint Set with 30,791 and the 2011 Proof Set with 12,430. The Grand Canyon Three-Coin Set’s inaugural sales were 12,418.

Half of the silver sets were out of the running, since the US Mint decided to temporarily suspend the sales of the 2010-dated sets until the spot price of silver stabilized.
Silver Coins Improve, Sets Retreat

Rising silver prices have helped and hindered US Mint silver products, based on the latest sales figures from the bureau. Five of the six clad and gold U.S. Army and Medal of Honor commemorative coins registered poorer weekly gains, but three of four silver U.S. Army and Medal of Honor coins improved. The silver coins contain 0.773 ounces of the metal, giving them a melt value of $34.86 at the current spot price of $45.07 an ounce. That is still $20 less …

Lincoln Gold Coins Lead

Since prices have been at an all time high, and only three coins remain available, it is no wonder sales for First Spouse Gold Coins fell from a cumulative total of 515 in the prior round down to 179. Prices increased on Wednesday, April 13 by $25 to $904 and $891 for the proof and uncirculated versions due to the rising price of gold on the market. As for the 2011 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set, its opening numbers remain a mystery since the Mint has yet to include it in their report.
Glacier Quarters Debut Figures

First Spouse Coin Sales Up

Although individual performances were mixed, First Spouse Gold Coin sales as a group rose for a second straight week. Also rising were First Spouse Gold Coin prices. The United States Mint increased the half ounce 24-karat coins’ prices to a new all time high. The increase was necessary according to the Mint’s pricing policy, which is based on the London Fix average weekly price of gold and the direction the trend is headed.
Native American Dollars Debut

The US Mint introduced three coin products last week, and the agency has provided the debuting sales figures for two of them in its latest weekly report. 2011 Native American $1 Rolls debuted first with their launch on Monday, March 28.
Mary Lincoln Coins Top Sales

There have been a few extreme peaks and valleys when it comes to First Spouse Gold Coin sales trends, and this round is no exception. The latest United States Mint sales data showed 117 cumulative sales for the coin series, compared to -350 and 968 in the prior two reports.
Silver Eagles Exceed 13 Million

American Silver Eagles got off to a nice start in April, but demand for numismatic silver products weakened again, despite a new set’s launch. Just one item managed to exceed its prior week’s increase. United States Mint’s Authorized Purchasers bought another 658,500 bullion Silver Eagles in the last few days, but that number was less than the 697,500 that were picked up at the end of March. The addition, however, tipped the 2011 annual sales number beyond …

Silver Stronger as Gold Fades?

End of the first calendar quarter numbers arrived this week for the bullion coins. The Mint sold 12,429,000 silver Eagles in the first three months. If it kept that pace up all year the annual total would be nearly 50 million coins. This would represent yet another large increase in output as compared to the year before. The gold one-ounce Eagle on the other hand is setting a respectable pace of 263,500 coins in the quarter. If this pace were kept up for the entire year …

Two numismatic products hit the charts. 2011 Native American $ 1 Coin Two-Roll Sets and Andrew Johnson Presidential $1 Coin Covers debuted in the latest United States Mint sales figures. Meanwhile, remaining sales were mixed and bullion Silver Eagles continued to shine. The US Mint made the 2011 Native American $ 1 Coin Two-Roll Sets available on Monday, March 28, and by Sunday, April 3 a combined total of 19,056 sets sold. Broken out, 9,655 …

The one item collectors coveted the most in this round was the 2011 Silver Proof Set. They took in 19,640 of them, but that was less than the 25,940 previously. So far, a total of 344,840 have sold.

The biggest losers of the group were the Mount Hood quarters bags and rolls. Their big leap in the prior report was retracted in this one. The 100-coin bags’ combined sales drop equaled -5,580 and the two-roll sets tumbled by -17,115.

Bullion American Eagles Lead

American Eagle bullion coins took center stage in the latest batch of US Mint sales figures. Their week-over-week sales levels improved for all but one offering. Seventeen US Mint numismatic products also outperformed their prior weekly gains, but the general sales trend for most collector coins and sets was down. Several were actually yanked back, registering lower totals than a week ago. The one-quarter ounce American Gold Eagle remained unchanged at …

Silver Eagles Hot

The market for bullion American Silver Eagles remains hot in March, but United States Mint numismatic silver products slowed for another week. One item did out-do its prior performance. Silver Eagles have been getting closer to the 3 million marker for March, but they have not crossed it yet. 2,767,000 have sold to US Mint Authorized Purchasers this month.
Gold Buffalo Interest at Limits?

Only 4,000 coins were sold this week as compared to last week’s debut number of 31,000. Naturally the rhythm of the marketplace dictates weekly sales totals, but is buyer interest in this coin already limited? Interest in Medal of Honor commemoratives again exceeded that for the Army coins, but the sales rate continues to fall. Just 853 gold proofs were sold, bringing the total to 10,811.
Sales of the United States Mint’s numismatic items mostly slumped following an up week. Silver products led while gold mostly fizzled.
First Spouse Coins Jump

The latest round of US Mint sales figures reveals some interesting weekly results. First Spouse Gold Coins jumped, resulting in two new sell outs this week. 2011 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Sets debuted, but at a slower pace. And in a milestone, the 2011 Silver Proof Sets rallied above 300,000. 2011 Silver Proof Sets surged 25,940. That was their best weekly showing since their six-day sales debut of 209,367 in January. The US Mint issued it Thursday, March 17, and by Sunday, March 20, the set debuted at 53,944. Although it was the …

The United States Mint began selling 2011 American Buffalo 24-Karat Bullion Gold Coins on March 14, 2011.

As a bullion product, the US Mint does not offer the bullion coins directly to the public but instead sells them to a small network of distributors who then resell the coins for a small premium over the current price of gold. The coins then begin to make their way into the secondary market where investors, coin collectors and others can purchase them.

While collectors order them, their main purpose is as an investment option. The US Mint says the following on its website about the bullion coin:

"American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coins are the first .9999 fine 24-karat gold coins ever struck by the United States Mint. These $50 gold coins are available to members of the public seeking a simple and tangible means to own and invest in 24-karat gold in the form of legal tender coins whose content and purity is guaranteed by the United States Government."

This year’s starting coin sales figures were slower than last year, due likely — at least in part — to the very volatile nature of gold prices in March. Between their release on Monday and through to Friday, the US Mint’s network of distributors ordered 26,000 of the 24-karat bullion pieces. As a comparison, last year’s opening coin sales figures were 48,500 on the first day they were released, April 29. Despite the fact that the 2010 issue was only available between April and September, their 2009 mintage was the second best for the series going back to their start in 2006.

The following articles from sister sites provide more information about the release of the 2011 Buffalo 24-Karat Bullion Gold Coin, with some also highlighting their beginning sales.

The United States Mint on Monday began selling the 2011 American Gold Buffalo Bullion Coin to its network of Authorized Purchasers (AP’s). The investment-grade coins entered the market during a time investors have been dumping stocks and commodities following the earthquake and nuclear crisis in Japan, making spectacular opening sales for the Buffalo pieces unlikely. …

From 2011 commemoratives to annual sets to America the Beautiful Quarters, nearly every item pulled back. Bullion American Eagles, however, were different.

The 2011 Medal of Honor Coins went from a 37,317 increase in the prior week’s sales to only 12,747 in this round. Demand for US Army commemoratives eased too. They went from a 16,227 leap to one that was just 6,128.

Another noteworthy change was the number of sales totals that were trimmed, possibly due to returns, cancellations or accounting. The biggest one was the Mount Hood quarters correction. The totals for the 100-coin bags were reduced by a combined count of 5,176. Its two-roll sets declined even more. They were reduced by 17,074.

Bullion Silver Eagles were about the only highlight in the news. Their 2011 annual sales number jumped by 748,500 during the week to land above 11 million. Currently, they are holding on to fourth place for the highest sales since the series started in 1986.

The following articles, however, provide detailed insights and analysis about the latest changes.

Collector Products Ease, Bullion Grows

Coin collectors appear to have taken a spring break vacation as buying activity for American numismatic coins and sets retreated, according to the latest US Mint sales figures. Several US Mint products actually declined from their previous tallies, indicating a batch of customer returns, cancellations or accounting updates. Bags and rolls of Mount Hood National Park Quarters fell the most after an unexpected uptick reported last week indicated soaring …

First Spouse Coins Slow

Most of the demand for First Spouse Gold Coins diminished during the latest round of the United States Mint sales figures. Six out of eight coins slowed, including the two sold out coins. Overall, 336 coins sold, compared to 368 previously. The two with sold out statuses, the James Buchanan’s Liberty Proof Coin and the Jane Pierce Proof Coin, both tumbled by -9 each. Buchanan’s uncirculated, however, blazed forward by 199 and outperformed its prior …

Silver Commemoratives Weaken

Collector demand abated for US Mint silver products, including the new 2011 commemorative silver dollars. Bullion American Silver Eagle coins, on the other hand, gained and have topped 11 million in annual sales. Silver Eagles climbed by 748,500. As a comparison, US Mint Authorized Purchasers scooped up 668,500 during the previous week. The total for March has now moved up to 1,417,000. Year-to-date sales remarkably arrived at 11,079,000 …

Never Mind About Hood Quarters

What the Mint giveth, the Mint taketh away. As I expected, the numbers for the Mount Hood quarters last week were indeed wonky. The Philadelphia quarter bag was reduced to 5,834 this week from last week’s reported 8,440. The Denver bag dropped to 5,597 from 8,167 and the two-roll set fell from 48,905 to 31,831. This week is also noteworthy for a number of items going off sale. The proof Jane Pierce First Spouse gold coin and the Buchanan proof are …

Silver Eagles Record

Bullion American Silver Eagles stood out as compared to slipping numismatic sales at the United States Mint. The Silver Eagles climbed higher toward another annual record while collector sets and coins weakened and slowed. US Mint bullion American Silver Eagles added 748,500 to their March total, bringing it to 1,417,000. With it, annual sales treaded lightly beyond the 11 million milestone. 2011 moved from fifth place to fourth place for highest annual …
