Note: The first about 30 seconds or so are off balance. There was a problem with the hookup into my computer, so the vocal audio is very low in the introduction.

This week was a very special edition of Cognitive Dissonance called "Cognitive Dissonance Celebrates Equality!" Why? Because the Platte County School District #1 tore down the Anti-Defamation League's "No Place for Hate" campaign banners at Wheatland's high school and West Elementary school after five parents (supposedly) complained because the Gay and Lesbian Fund of Colorado was one sponsor of this campaign. The banners hung for nearly a year before anyone was "offended."

The school board's ultimate vote was 4-3 in favor of tearing the banners down. Many students and community members are outraged and are insisting the banners be hung again. Check out the Wheaterville website for more info, to sign a petition to put the banners back up, and how to contact the school board. We took public comment all night from Laramie community members, as well as from some brave souls who ventured from Wheatland. School board members will all be receiving CDs of this broadcast very soon.

Technical note: I had wanted to mention Wheatland HS grad Jeremy Bredeson's excellent website and post, "Gay Like Me" on my show, but I simply forgot to write it in the show log. As such, I forgot. So I still want to give him a shout-out here: Give Mama Some Sugar

As for the rest of the show, Angry Malcontent reminded Obama the Lucy never let Charlie Brown kick the football and the fundits broke character to each speak as themselves on this issue. Yes, kids, here's the big reveal: The fundits aren't real people, they're caricatures of pundits. Whoa. D-bag o' the Week saw local and national d-bags getting called out with an assist from Matt Stannard. You can catch Matt on KOCA with "Sunday School" from 2-4 p.m. as he plays unsigned bands, b-sides and rarities and throws in a dash of political commentary for that perfect blend of spices.

Cognitive Dissonance teaches Sunday School, 1.17.10

I filled in for new KOCA addition Matt Stannard of Shared Sacrifice on Sunday. Matt recently began hosting the show "Sunday School" but due to his alter-ego's responsibilities, he was forced to be in Texas this weekend. His show features progressive commentary and his own unique blend of music - think the similar politics of Cognitive Dissonance, but with a problem-solving twist.

No worries. I played some political folk and some indie rock, and appealed to the good people in radioland to donate to the unfortunate souls in Haiti who have recently lost everything. I also talked about making phone calls for Democrat Martha Coakley in Massachusetts. She's the number sixty vote on health care reform, unless Scott Brown, a moderate-turned-teabagger, happens to swoop in and capture the seat.

Hooray for a redesigned website! This week's show was a blast as Cognitive Dissonance welcomed back the Angry Malcontent and the Fundits. The Malcontent ranted about the new direction terrorism may take and the Fundits discussed the merits of teabagging. I also had progressive blogger and podcaster Matt Stannard of Shared Sacrifice on the show to discuss the premiere of his new show on KOCA Jan. 10th.

And did I mention local band The Blue Routes? According to their website, The Blue Routes sound like: "A funk machine. With reggae underwear. And a blues t-shirt." I played two of their songs and they made the mad dash to the studio to premiere "A Tighter Loose" right after playing a three-hour set at Coal Creek Coffee in downtown Laramie. The Blue Routes members are: Micah Wyatt, Jascha Herdt, and Phillip Cleveland

D-baggery reigned supreme, with Brit Hume of Fox News, David Letterman and Rudy Giuliani taking the crown.

Podcasts will slowly return. I'm getting caught up, but this was an extra-special podcast. The podcasts will probably be somewhat out of order, but they'll be here. This week's show featured Dustin Von Krosigk, producer for the group Goon Squad, and a youth member of The State Advisory Council on Juvenile Justice (SACJJ). The SACJJ is made up of twenty-five people with training, experience or special knowledge concerning the prevention and treatment of juvenile delinquency or the administration of juvenile justice.

Dustin was in and out of the juvenile system in Wyoming for non-violent offenses and saw the lack of focus on rehabilitation first-hand. He was also recently interviewed for a documentary on juvenile justice. It was fitting to have Dustin as a guest on Cognitive Dissonance on the second half of the "Know Your Rights" special - I read each amendment from the Bill of Rights and explained the meaning.

The Angry Malcontent was ranting about car trouble since he was stuck in Fort Collins, but the Fundits were present. They debated the vote in Maine to overturn the governor's signing of a law to allow same-sex marriage. We had multiple d-bags o' the week.

Finally, hip-hop group Goon Squad (produced by Dustin Von Krosigk) premiered two songs on the show.

Plus, the Angry Malcontent ranted about Professor Gates-gate. Blue Collar Joe and Aurora Firestone further debated the Gates matter, and then got reasoned by the Angry Malcontent, and we had an unrelated, three-way tie for d-bag of the week! It was a slightly Network-ish moment. (Note: Time to boycott Burger King.)

Cognitive Dissonance is now available for download! The first episode is from 05.01.09 and features Cameron Maris of Nineteen Cent Feast as my special guest. We also have the Angry Malcontent ranting and raving about Swine Flu, "Fundits" Aurora Firestone and Blue Collar Joe, and our own Congresswoman Cynthia Lummis as this week's featured D-bag.

Of course, the man of the hour was Cameron Maris. He talked about the band and premiered a brand new Nineteen Cent Feast song, "This Sharp Chain/Grow Up."
