The university where Peter Drucker's, the father of modern management, Institute is located.

It was an amazing day of inspiring researchers from around the world talking about how they were applying positivity to their area of research. (To see some pictures and videos of the day visit my Facebook Page!)

One of the most interesting and easy to grasp ideas that I got from the day was The Positivity Ratio. Barbara Fredrickson from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has discovered the ratio of how many positive emotional experiences it takes to off set one negative emotional experience. What she found is somewhat surprising.

It takes 3 positive emotional experiences to reach a "tipping point beyond which people naturally become more resilient to adversity and effortlessly achieve what they once could only imagine." It takes 3 positives to undo one negative.

Think back over your day or even the last hour. How many positive emotions did you feel? How many negative emotions did you feel? What is your ratio?

Here is the most shocking information. If you are like 80% of all Americans, you probably are not having 3 positives for each negative emotional experience. That is what her research is revealing. Only 20% of Americans have a 3 to 1 ratio (or better).

So, what do you do? How can you change your ratio?

Dr. Fredrickson's prescription is to lightly create a positive mindset by being open, curious, and appreciative.

Gratitude journals really do make a difference. Take a moment and create a list (even if it is a mental list) of 3 to 5 things you could do right now to be happier.

She also recommends that we track our positivity ratio daily. As you may know, what you measure you pay attention to. So, tracking your ratio each day will cause the ratio to change. (Hence why most diet programs require a food diary and financial planners suggest you track your spending.)

In one of her studies she used a Loving Kindness Mediation. The results are staggering. The increase in positive emotion lead to numerous benefits to health and well-being. She is currently preparing this research for publication.

Radio

Having been in commercial radio for 14 years I know that finding quality guests that motivate and satisfy listeners is a difficult task. I am becoming a regular guest on the show and loving it.

However, I get a bit frustrated with the talk radio format.

Radio moves so fast that I can share only a very small amount of information. So, I sat down and started recording all the information I have on the topic of Fear.

Here are the audio files that I created. Enjoy!

Buy all 3 Audio Recordings for $19.95 (about the price of 2):

Here is the Understanding Fear Audio recording for $9.95:

Here is the Free Form Writing recording for $9.95:

Voice Work Audio Recording for $9.95:

Coaching When the Market is Down

Here is an interesting perspective from a very successful coach:

“Individuals are eager for coaching...actually, the demand for life coaching goes up in ‘tough’ and scary conditions. People want to learn to depend on THEMSELVES from now on and not some company or their government or an investment gamble. One dynamic of these is that they are all related to each other. If you have a lot of one, it can reduce the need for the others. The three sources are:

Time

Energy

Money

Another thing to consider is that they are always increasing or decreasing. So, if you want to accomplish more... the question is how can you leverage these three sources of power to get things done.

The Guru of Personal Productivity David Allen

go over to YogiTimesBlog and check out a post that has a video of David Allen espousing his productivity wisdom.

CLICK HERE and check it out.

Going Public!

What are you hiding? What part of your passion are your keeping from us? What gifts and talents are laying dormant inside you? What are you waiting to express or do? What are you postponing until you have enough money, a house, a significant other, your dream job, the perfect figure, etc....

Can I be blunt with you?

When I was 15 years old I went to Outward Bound. It was an awesome experience. During the 21 days of survival school in the middle of the wilderness we were trained on rock climbing. Sometimes a person will freeze up on the side of a mountain. They will be paralyzed and not be able to move an inch. You wouldn't think it happens that often in rock climbing... I guess it happens enough that it we were taught what to do. I remember being quite shocked at what they told us was the best thing to do to save their life. After climbing over to where the person is frozen, slap them as hard as you can across their face.

So, here is a slap across your face. Your wake up call.

Stop it!

Go public!

Stop waiting. Stop hiding.

Start living.

Ultimate Accountability: A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

I just finished an awesome coaching call with a client. I never experienced this before.
It blew me away. I loved it...

Near the end of the session, he identified the next most important action.

When I asked him, "How will I know you did it?" His answer surprised me.

He said, "I'll text you a picture with my phone."

Wow! That is what I call ultimate accountability.

Imagine what you would do differently if you knew someone else was going to see a picture of it. Have problems keeping your desk clean, send a picture of it to your coach at the end of every day.

Creating an environment of accountability. If you want to some, check out my next Happy Healthy Wealthy Game. It is an awesome environment of accountability. Everyday you commit to actions and report on your commitments from the day before. It will knock your socks off - and get you into action.

What would you ask a Zen Master?

I am honored to have the opportunity to sit with an amazing Zen Master and interview him for Yogi Times. As I prepared, I want to know your thoughts.

What would you ask the highest ranking Zen Master outside of Japan?

Click on Comment below and let me know. I interview him on Tuesday, February, 12th.

Click on "read more" below if you want to learn more about Genpo and his revolutionary ideas. I got interested in Genpo when I heard his claim that he could facilitate a person achieving a non-dual state of consciousness in three hours when most Zen students take about five years using traditional methods. He calls it "Big Mind."

Genpo Roshi Dennis Genpo Merzel Roshi is a revolutionary in the tradition of the old Zen Masters who so embodied Buddhist teaching that they were able to revitalize and transform it for their own day and age. Genpo Roshi is working to transmit the essence of the Buddha's teachings in a way that is readily accessible to Westerners and relevant to our everyday life.

Genpo (who is an American) is considered by many to be the highest ranking Zen master outside of Japan because he is a student of Maezumi Roshi (a very famous teacher and Zen master), he is a direct decendent of the highly respected Soto Zen lineage, and for years he has been the head of the largest Zen lineage in the world outside of Japan (though he just resigned from that a few months ago).

Just Submitted to Yogi Times

I just submitted the feature article for the January issue of Yogi Times. The article is all about how to create a new year's resolution and actually follow through. It draws from current psychological research. The editor says that the article is going to set a new standard of writing for the magazine.

Look for it on the newsstands at the beginning of the year. Shared a profound learning she had during the game. She told me the transformation that set her on the path to winning was to ask a very simple question. This one question completely redirected the daily actions in her game toward her Happy, Healthy, and Wealthy 90-day Goals.

The question was:

If a person has already successfully accomplished this goal of ________, what habits would they have?

Or said another way:

What habits will create the successful accomplishment of my goals?

Habits make up 80% of our day! We are operating in automatic behavior. We are on auto-pilot. We are just running through the same actions and thoughts like a hamster on a hamster wheel. (Yes, sometimes even you and I run faster thinking it will help - just like a hamster!)

Well, the fact of the matter is that habits are at the core of not only accomplishing anything. But also being able to maintain and sustain the accomplishment. No one wants to be a one-hit wonder.

You probably want and most certainly deserve sustained wealth, health, and happiness! Not just a glorious moment of it before you go back down into your "real" life.

In this latest game, at the end, this particular winner said, "The Happy Healthy Wealthy Game and Doug's insightful coaching, is what made me realize this is the secret to my success."

I can officially say it's the first time in my life I am being held accountable...

I am blessed to have the amazing yoga teacher Liz Hage in a Happy Healthy Wealthy Game. No, she is not related to my virtual assistant LuAnne Hage. Just a coincidence (or is it?).

Liz just sent out her Bhakti News eNewsletter. (Click on the picture above and sign up for it.)

I thought you might be interested to hear what she said. Here is the opening of her newsletter:

Dear friends,

I hope you enjoyed your 3 day weekend and that all of your labors will bring you abundance, joy and inspiration this month. My labors have brought an amazing mentor into my life named Doug Miller. Last week I started playing a game with him, along with a friend of mine, called the Happy, Healthy, Wealthy Game (don't be fooled by the name!). After a week of playing, I can officially say it's the first time in my life I am being held accountable for my life goals on a daily basis and it is AWESOME!

If any of you have goals you are working towards and find it's challenging to keep focused on them, I highly suggest contacting Doug to find out when the next game begins.

In this month's issue of Bhakti News, learn about a worldwide charity event, a local kirtan and a pretty cool offering called yogichocolate.

Here's to your happiness, health & wealth!

Enjoy!

Be love,
Liz Hage

By the way, I have a new game starting on Thursday, September 13th at 10AM. Click here to sign up now.

What was the Today Show up to last Friday?

The big question the Today Show was asking last Friday is:

Has Labor Day become the new New Year's?

How often have you found yourself saying, "After Labor Day I'll start that project"? Or "After Labor Day, I'll start my new workout regiment"? Sounds a lot like a New Year's resolution. That was the question they were asking, Is Labor Day the new New Year's?

Interestingly enough, the London Free Press reports something very similar: an increase in gym attendance and new memberships in September.

Do you include yourself in this mass of people setting New Year's resolutions 4 months early? Or are you like some who are looking at that list of goals for 2007 wondering how to make them happen in the last four months of the year?

Have a read of some of my previous posts on The Power of Environments, and then set yourself up for success by putting an environment and a structure in place to support you in accomplishing more than you ever thought possible. It becomes a giant mirror revealing to you what the secrets are to your success. The key to unlocking those secrets can be broken into two.

The first is that any true learning is going to take place through action and experience. Reading a book and knowing is not enough. Getting out on the field of life and putting knowing into action is the answer.

The second aspect of the key to unlocking the secret to your success is in noticing. Noticing what is working and doing more of that. Noticing what is not working and doing less of that. Sounds simple, but it is one of the hardest things to do.

The Happy Healthy Wealthy Game will reflect it all. And through action and awareness your eyes will be opened to the path to success.

Look for new games being announced this week!

Be well,
Doug Miller

Using The Law of Attraction in Parenting & Living: An Interview with Wendy Silvers!

I interviewed Wendy Silvers about conscious living and parenting. Yes, a lot of people are stuck where they are. But it is not because they are comfortable. They hate their circumstances. They despise it. They want more, better, and different.

Their "comfort zone" is not the culprit. They are just really familiar with where they are.

No one is really comfortable being unhappy, sick and broke. They just know it really really well. It is familiar.

So, next time you think about comfort zones, chuckle to yourself and recognize that you are not comfortable at all. The reality is you are just really familiar with it.
