Reports of snow showers in parts of the UK over the past 24 hours and the prospect of more on high ground tonight may seem a little out of context at this time of year, but is it unusual?

Snowfall at this time of year isn’t an annual event, so it’s not completely normal, but it’s fair to say it’s not completely unusual either. We last saw snow in May all the way back in… 2011, just last year, and we also saw more snow in 2010.

If we look back through the records dating back to 1910, the snowiest May on record was most likely in 1979 when 342 weather observation sites reported snow on 2 May.

This snowy spell lasted through the whole of the first week of that month. The light snow showers we’ve seen this May seem slight in comparison.

Besides these wintry showers, much has been made in the media of the ‘cold spell’ which is ‘gripping’ the UK this month and the rather unsettled weather we’ve had.
As we can see from the map, the area has cooled more than was Asian, but also Europe (especially central / western and northern Europe) and North America, especially in Alaska and the U.S. center / Western (as well as in central Canada / Western) have been affected by negative anomalies, while in some areas of Australia, the Arctic, and the Middle East, Africa, Central and South Atlantic, there were positive anomalies, however, less clear than those cold, especially in the great continent of Asia.
Deroy Murdock: Astronauts Join Skeptics of Global Warming

Article Tags: Deroy Murdock, Meetings

To the long list of right-wing, knuckle-dragging know nothings who dare question so-called "global warming," environmentalists now can add six Apollo astronauts, two rocket men who flew aboard Skylab, and a pair of former directors of the Johnson Space Center (JSC).

These veterans of America's space program are among the 49 retired NASA employees who recently asked the space agency to halt what they consider its unscientific advocacy of climate alarmism.

In a letter to NASA administrator Charles Bolden Jr., these rocket scientists, space explorers, and other men and women of reason requested, "NASA and the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) refrain from including unproven remarks in public releases and websites."

They added: "We believe the claims by NASA and GISS, that man-made carbon dioxide is having a catastrophic impact on global climate change are not substantiated, especially when considering thousands of years of empirical data. With hundreds of well-known climate scientists and tens of thousands of other scientists publicly declaring their disbelief in the catastrophic forecasts, coming particularly from the GISS leadership, it is clear that the science is NOT settled."
BRITAIN was shivering in a late winter blast which brought two inches of snow to parts of the country yesterday.

With only 17 days to go before the start of “flaming” June, snow flurries were seen as far south as Wolverhampton after temperatures plunged to -5C (23F) overnight.

Up to two inches of snow were also reported in parts of Scotland, the Pennines and Cumbria.

Weather experts said the UK was still “stuck” in a system of bitter cold air from the Arctic which shows no signs of moving on. Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, added: “We are still very much in a northerly air flow.

“It is significantly colder than normal for the time of year, and looks like staying that way at least until the end of May.”

The entire country is at risk of widespread frost all this week with daytime and overnight temperatures about 5C lower than normal for the time of year.

The Mayans reportedly forecast the world would end this Dec. 21 or at least the present era would. Modern doomsayers, though, tend to be less specific.

In a New York Times Op-Ed piece last week, top U.S. global-warming activist James Hansen predicted that if Canada proceeded to exploit the oil in its vast tarsands reserves and America did nothing, it would be "game over" for the climate.

Game over? Yes, sea levels would rise and destroy coastal cities, the demo-addicted NASA scientist insisted, and global temperatures would become intolerable.

"Twenty to 50 per cent of the planet's species would be driven to extinction," he said. "Civilization would be at risk."
Opposing Views: Game Over for the Climate by James Hansen, New York Times

Article Tags: Editorial, Opposing Views

GLOBAL warming isn’t a prediction. It is happening. That is why I was so troubled to read a recent interview with President Obama in Rolling Stone in which he said that Canada would exploit the oil in its vast tar sands reserves “regardless of what we do.”

If Canada proceeds, and we do nothing, it will be game over for the climate.

Canada’s tar sands, deposits of sand saturated with bitumen, contain twice the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by global oil use in our entire history. If we were to fully exploit this new oil source, and continue to burn our conventional oil, gas and coal supplies, concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere eventually would reach levels higher than in the Pliocene era, more than 2.5 million years ago, when sea level was at least 50 feet higher than it is now. That level of heat-trapping gases would assure that the disintegration of the ice sheets would accelerate out of control. Sea levels would rise and destroy coastal cities. Global temperatures would become intolerable. Twenty to 50 percent of the planet’s species would be driven to extinction. Civilization would be at risk.

Scientists are beginning a month-long experiment in Scottish waters to study the impact of a possible leak from an undersea carbon dioxide storage site.

Working in Ardmucknish Bay near Oban, researchers will allow CO2 to bubble through sediments from a buried pipe and look for impacts on marine life.

Capturing CO2 from power stations and burying it under the seabed is viewed as an important global warming fix.

A number of countries have plants in operation, though the UK does not.

This is believed to be the first time that an impact of CO2 escape on seabed ecosystems has been investigated.
Critics say insulating lofts should be the priority.

Downing Street is about to review the government's Green Deal after warnings that it's liable to fail.

The Cabinet Office has been interviewing critics of the flagship scheme and is expected to report soon.

The Deal - to insulate the UK's aged housing stock - is designed to save carbon emissions, keep people warm, and make energy affordable.

But critics say it won't give enough help to the fuel poor, and warn it may waste £2-3bn of people's energy bills.

They say this is a scandal after the recent warning that the number of people unable to afford their energy bills is likely to rise to 8.5 million.

The Green Deal is split into two parts. The larger part relies on householders voluntarily taking pay-as-you-save loans to cut energy bills through home insulation. The private sector is supposed to deliver the improvements.

The other part of the programme, known as ECO, will subsidise people to insulate their homes if they can't do it without help. This will be funded through a £1.3bn-a-year charge against all of our energy bills.

The average global temperature for April on the UAH satellite measure jumped to +0.295C above the 30 year running mean.

This equates to approximately +0.548C above the standard 1961-1990 average, used by the World Meteorological Organisation.

Significantly, April Arctic sea ice was close to the 1979-2012 average, and the highest in April for over 10 years, shown below

Clodest May Latest: Snow in mid-May as forecasters warn of possible summer washout

Article Tags: UK Forecast May 2012

Snow fall as far south as the Midlands and overnight frosts were described as “unusual” weather for mid May by the Met Office as the forecasters admitted the Jubilee could be a washout.

Just 17 days before summer starts, hail and sleet hit the morning rush-hour in Wolverhampton, West Mids, as well as Staffordshire, Shropshire, Cheshire and Durham.

The Met Office said Scotland - where temperatures fell to a near record low for this time of year at -4C (25F) at Cairngorm, could see snow settling on the mountains and in the Pennines, Cumbria and southern Scotland,

Temperatures could even get below freezing overnight in the south in sheltered spots as the “unusual but not unprecedented” mid-May weather continues.

Usually temperatures are up to 16C (61F) at this time of year but even in the sunshine the mercury is only reaching 14C and in the wind most parts of the country are much colder.

Variations in ozone in the lower stratosphere could be the main reason for the global warming seen in the past few decades, according to a new paper in press at the Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics. It is claimed that the new model is capable of explaining 82% of the total Earth temperature variability.

Nataliya Kilifarska of the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography, in Sofia, Bulgaria, presents a powerful analysis that confirms a strong relationship between stratospheric ozone and land air temperature.

I have come up with a display for the Piers Corbyn Earthquake and Volcano "Red Warning" May forecast. The other day I posted Solar Climate Change: Latest news: There Have Been NO Significant Earthquakes in May (So Far), and it seemed to lack something.

I thought it would be a cool idea to make use of the USGS Real Time Earthquake Map so you could see what's going on at any time in the month.

This will be produced on a daily/monthly basis using a fictitious "Daily Quake" heading (if any of you can put together a better logo please do). There is also a Twitter Account for DailyQuake please feel free to use it.

Piers Corbyn has indicated in his "May Red Warning" from about the 18/19th we should expect to see M6.5+ Earthquakes due to the location of the Moon and in combination with Solar Activity (the Ring of Fire period).

The location of the Moon is an integral part of the "Solar Climate Change" process, so having an eclipse going at the same time as Earthquakes and erupting Volcano's is not as crazy as it sounds.

See below for latest USGS Chart

Rebbecca Terrell: Media Meltdown Over Antarctic Basin

Article Tags: Rebecca Terrell

Media reports claim Antarctica is facing potential meltdown from global warming. "Antarctic ice shelf at tipping point," warns a headline from TG Daily. "Deep basin under West Antarctic Ice Sheet suggests greater risk of collapse," cautions Disaster News Network. And msnbc.com quips, "Vast Antarctic ice sheet 'in play' with global warming."

These headlines spin off new research that reveals a previously unknown basin under the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) near the Weddell Sea. Using high-tech ice-penetrating radar, a team of scientists from the U.S. and U.K. discovered the sub-glacial basin they say is nearly the size of New Jersey and makes the ice sheet above it vulnerable to collapse. Their study results are published in the current edition of Nature Geoscience.

"If we were to invent a set of conditions conducive to retreat of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, this would be it," said Don Blankenship , senior research scientist at The University of Texas at Austin's Institute for Geophysics. He co-authored the paper with experts from the British Antarctic Survey and the Universities of Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Exeter and York.
Temperatures could plunge as low as -6C (21F) from today with some areas facing up to 2in of snow.

Much of the country is braced for night-time frosts, bitter cold winds and icy rain to make it feel more like winter until at least the middle of June.

It follows an almost summer-like weekend which saw two days of glorious sunshine, bringing highs of 17C (63F). But experts say the new bout of miserable weather is caused by the jet stream over Europe which is stopping warm air arriving from the Continent and allowing a northerly freezing blast to roar in.

Although the worst of the weather will hit the North this week, the South will endure days of drizzle and freezing winds that will make it feel like -3C, followed by harsh frosts at night. Jonathan Powell, forecaster with Vantage Weather Services, said: “It looks like this is going to continue well into June. Summer is really on hold, with no sign of it in the near future...
Robert M Wagner: Global warming claims all hot air, says speaker at OU

Article Tags: Robert M Wagner

Dr. Robert M Wagner of the group Conservative Cavalry denied the existence of climate change during an appearance at Ohio University Thursday evening. Wagner suggested the notion of human-caused global warming is mainly a cover for intrusive government regulation.

"If you really boil it down, [the climate change debate] is about control," Wagner said. "How can we maximize and centralize the power to make all your decisions for you."

Wagner was invited to speak by the OU College Republicans as a part of their "Conservative Week" event series.

While Wagner has done these presentations multiple times before, he always faces criticism from the climate scientists who he challenges.

"He has absolutely no training as a climate scientist," said Dr. Lonnie Thompson, a Distinguished Professor in the School of Earth Sciences and a Research Scientist in the Byrd Polar Research Center at The Ohio State University.

Friday Evening Political Forum: Beyond the Carbon Price
Part 7 of 8: Christine Milne, leader of the Australian Greens, delivers an inspiring call to action as the consequences of climate change are clearly upon us while economically we are continuing a business as usual policy.

The action required is urgent and we need to drive an increase in action through increasing the RET (Renewable Energy Target) in 2012, ensuring Climate Change is a major topic of the 2013 election and immediately stop the expansionist policy of developing coal, gas and coal seam gas mining.

Caroline Lucas has stood down as head of the UK Green Party. Lucas is her party’s first and only Member of Parliament, an honor that voters nowadays rate about as highly as being “the last person to be hanged in England.” It’s a fascinating piece of trivia, but not the most flattering way to be remembered.

With Lucas gone the Greens will set about choosing a replacement in the traditional manner: whoever can eat a four course meal in a vegan restaurant and survive wins. Expect the contest to come down to a tight race between an unshaven sociology lecturer and a dolphin called Roger. Roger will win on personality.

I lived for two years in the Green Party’s political stronghold of Brighton, a seaside town on the Sussex coast. I was still a partisan Labour man back then, so I witnessed firsthand the slow decline of socialism and its eclipse by the ecology movement. The cause was demographics. Our people were dying out or couldn’t be bothered to vote. The Greens, on the other hand, benefited from the influx of middle-class professionals and students. By nature, Brighton is a working-class town (even those bits of it that are proudly gay), but gentrification took its toll in the noughties and changed its character. I lived in a Georgian dive opposite the burnt-out pier for just £650 a month. Three minutes down the road, BBC producers were forking out £2000 for a studio flat opposite an excrement-fuelled eco garden. The future was Green.

eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov - The transit or passage of a planet across the face of the Sun is a relatively rare occurrence. As seen from Earth, only transits of Mercury and Venus are possible. On average, there are 13 transits of Mercury each century. In contrast, transits of Venus occur in pairs with more than a century separating each pair.

The last Venus transit was in 2004 so the second event of the pair will occur on Wednesday, June 6 (Tuesday, June 5 from the Western Hemisphere). The entire event will be widely visible from the western Pacific, eastern Asia and eastern Australia as shown in Figure 1. Most of North and Central America, and northern South America will witness the beginning of the transit (on June 5) but the Sun will set before the event ends. Similarly, observers in Europe, western and central Asia, eastern Africa and western Australia will see the end of the event since the transit will already be in progress at sunrise from those locations....Click eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov to read FULL report

New developments are dashing any hopes Romney would escape the RNC unscathed and emerge on the other side as the easy Republican nominee.

Surfacing Thursday was a damaging and revealing run-down of the circumstances revolving around who is and isn't a “bound” delegate and what may end up being a game changer for Paul.

With 11 states now in the books for Paul, to Romney's 18 and only 11 states left to start their primary or caucus process, Ron Paul has seemingly "stolen" enough delegates in the undecided states and will likely gain enough in states to come, virtually assuring a brokered convention at the RNC in August.

In addition to developments stating there may not actually be such thing as a “bound” delegate at the national level after all, Ron Paul may actually be truly nipping at Romney's heels, despite recent establishment media reports that state otherwise.
Article Tags: Reply To Letter, Tom Harris

Re - "Climate change denial isn’t about science or skepticism", March 13

To the editor:

David Suzuki misleads readers when he writes:

"the revelation that Ottawa’s Carleton University hired Tom Harris, a PR man for a number of “astroturf” groups with a mechanical engineering background, to teach a course on climate change."

It is old news, not a “revelation”, that I taught a climate course at Carleton for the past three years. I was hired because of my teaching and science background as well as my decade of working with the course originator and primary author, Professor Tim Patterson, a leading academic and climate researcher at Carleton.

I am not a "PR man." Like Suzuki, I engage in public education. I have solid training and experience in thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics, all relevant to understanding the causes of climate change. How does David Suzuki’s biology background equip him to comment so loudly on the immensely complex atmospheric/oceanic climate system?

Christopher Booker: Keeping the country short of water is now government – and EU – policy

Article Tags: Christopher Booker, UK Drought Forecast 2012

Failure to fix leaks and increase reservoir capacity are behind our water problems.

When I returned last week to a grey, cold, rainswept Heathrow, after a brief visit to Australia on rather sad family business, I naturally wanted to know what had been going on while I was away. It hardly said much for our democracy that Boris Johnson should have owed his “triumphant” re-election as Mayor to the support of just 16.8 per cent of those Londoners eligible to vote – while Labour owed its “victory” in council elections to just 12 per cent of the potential voters. The Greek and French election results heralded another sharp downward lurch in the slow-motion collapse of the euro. The prospect of Britain’s lights going out moved nearer with the pulling out of France’s state-owned EDF as the last company that might have provided us with new nuclear power stations, while the Environment Agency’s Chris Smith announced that Britain may be hoping for a glut of cheap gas from “fracking” shale, but that this could be allowed to generate electricity only on condition that all the resulting CO₂ is buried in holes in the ground, by a wishful-thinking technology that would double its price and is unlikely ever to work anyway.

As big a story as any, however, was the ongoing drama of our “wettest-ever drought” as, despite record recent rainfall, we are told that hosepipe bans are still unlikely to be lifted because we don’t have enough water to go round. And here, it turns out, there is a startling twist to the tale.

The great water shambles, as we know, centres on two major failings of national policy. One is the water companies’ failure to plug the leaks that are costing us nearly as much water every two years as is contained in all our reservoirs. The other is their failure to add to that reservoir capacity, which has barely increased in the 20 years since water was privatised, despite our 10 per cent growth in population.
Climate mania impoverishes electricity customers worldwide

Global-warming-related catastrophes are increasingly hitting vulnerable populations around the world, with one species in particular danger: the electricity ratepayer. In Canada, in the U.K., in Spain, in Denmark, in Germany and elsewhere the danger to ratepayers is especially great, but ratepayers in one country — the U.S. — seem to have weathered the worst of the disaster.

America’s secret? Unlike leaders in other countries, which to their countries’ ruin adopted policies as if global warming mattered, U.S. leaders more paid lip service to it. While citizens in other countries are now seeing soaring power rates, American householders can look forward to declining rates.

The North American exemplar of acting on the perceived threat of global warming is Ontario, which dismantled one of the continent’s finest fleets of coal plants in pursuit of becoming a green leader. Then, to induce developers to build uneconomic renewable energy facilities, the Ontario government paid them as much as 80 times the market rate for power. The result is power prices that rose rapidly (about 50% since 2005) and will continue to do so: Ontarians can expect power prices that are 46% higher over the next five years, according to a 2010 Ontario government estimate, and more than 100% higher according to independent estimates. The rest of Canada may not fare much better — the National Energy Board forecasts power prices 42% higher by 2035, while some estimates have Canadian power prices 50% higher by 2020.

The story throughout much of Europe is similar. Denmark, an early adopter of the global-warming mania, now requires its households to pay the developed world’s highest power prices — about 40¢ a kilowatt hour, or three to four times what North Americans pay today. Germany, whose powerhouse economy gave green developers a blank cheque, is a close second, followed by other politically correct nations such as Belgium, the headquarters of the EU, and distressed nations such as Spain.

The following reports from SpaceWeather.com and SolarHam.com indicate that a larger then average CME was unable to escape from the Sun's gravity.

This may be the first real indication of the four pole Sun effect and that it could have been also the cause of the recent FAIL for the Piers Corbyn Earthquake & Volcanic Activity forecast in period 5th - 7th May....more to follow...GR
Strong M5.7 Solar Flare SolarHam.com

A strong solar flare reaching M5.7 was detected around Sunspot 1476 and peaked at 04:18 UTC Thursday morning. This event also generated a 10cm Radio Burst (TenFlare). Most of the flare events thus far have not produced any large Coronal Mass Ejections. When watching the latest STEREO Ahead COR2 movie, it does not appear that a substantial CME was produced. Continue to monitor the Solar X-Ray Flux for further activity.
"I Predict Earthquakes" an interview with Dr. John P. Gregori, member of the Center for the prediction of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions IEVPC

Article Tags: Solar Climate Change, Volcanic Activity

Eclisseforum.it has interviewed Dr. John Gregory, a member of the famous center for the prediction of earthquakes and volcanic IEVPC based in Orlando (USA).

The interview is structured in two parts, but here we publish the first.

But first let's find out who is prof. John P. Gregori - Professor of Geophysics and researcher at the Institute of Acoustics CNR OMCorbino CNR of Rome. 1963-2001 Researcher at the IFA / CNR (Institute of Atmospheric Physics), Rome, with instructions to study the Sun-Earth Relations. The polar aurora and geomagnetism (1963-1975) have led to a model of the magnetosphere (1970-1972) considered one of his best results. He formulated a theory of magnetospheric substorms and magnetic storms on the sole basis of variational principles of classical physics, by applying the result even planets and their satellites. Since 1961 he has an intense congressional worldwide.

1) Dr. Gregori, we can explain what the IEVPC, how it operates and what are its aims?

http://www.ievpc.org/

It is an initiative that aims to provide a service similar to that of the meteorological service on though - instead of the atmospheric circulation - the efforts in the crust.

Consider this analogy in detail.
BRITAIN is braced for a “depressingly cold” snap next week with snow forecast as the miserable weather continues to put summer on hold....

...Temperatures in parts of the North are likely to sink to -5C (23F) by Tuesday with the chance of significant snowfalls in Scotland.

Although it will feel milder in the South it will be colder than normal for the time of year with overnight frosts in some areas. The grim weather is set to last at least another week with summer on hold, possibly until next month.

Jim Dale, forecaster with British Weather Services, said: “It is going to be depressingly cold in the North. The whole country is looking at temperatures well below average.

“In the North we are looking at air frosts with ground frosts likely in the South and temperatures around -2C.
...Hansen says the heat wave that struck Texas and Oklahoma last summer and the Moscow heat wave of 2010 (which caused 11,000 deaths in the city) are examples of three-sigma anomalies. In a paper published last year in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Stefan Rahmstorf and Dim Coumou of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, in Germany, wrote that it was 80 percent probable that the Moscow heat wave had been caused by global warming.

“These three-sigma anomalies,” Hansen says, “we can now say are due to global warming.” But what about the extreme cold snaps climate-change deniers keep pointing to? Even with global warming, Hansen told Time.com in an email, there “is still a broad bell curve. In fact, it has become broader, which means there will still be times when a season is colder than average. When that happens [people] should not say, ‘What happened to global warming?’ It will still be there — they are just looking at natural variability.”...
Russell Cook: Heartland Institute 'Unabomber billboard' brings out Global Warming Alarmists' One-Trick Pony

Article Tags: Meetings, Russell Cook

For those who missed this explosive mini-controversy from last week, the Heartland Institute, a think tank publishing lengthy reports contradicting the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) about man-caused global warming, paid for the placement of an electronic billboard in Chicago that repeated a notorious criminal's belief in global warming. A huge outpouring of criticism about the billboard prompted Heartland to pull it.

It was illustrating absurdity with absurdity that backfired because global warming alarmists weren't put into a defensive position of explaining why the issue is on the verge of total collapse. As Rush Limbaugh noted recently, "you never descend to the level of your opponent or they win."

The billboard clearly did not advance the skeptic position, but it at least illustrates how the best defense is to go on the offense. As this opportunity was widely grabbed by alarmists to portray Heartland as daffy, corrupt, and politically motivated, it serves as one more example of how alarmists rely on shell games keep the public from fully comprehending the enormous faults in the idea of man-caused global warming.

Another great speech with a transcript and recording: Speech given on 3 May 2012 to the Bruges Group on Europe by Václav Klaus, the President of the Czech Republic

Václav Klaus is the President of the Czech Republic. Shortly after Czechoslovakia became free from communism he became Prime Minister and instituted Thatcherite economic reforms. He is widely regarded as being the key behind the Czech Republic’s economic transformation. Václav Klaus is Europe’s leading statesman opposing European centralisation.

President Klaus argues that, ‘In contrast to Marx, supporters of global governance do not believe that salvation will arise via the proletariat: they humbly suggest that it will come from themselves.

‘The manifestations of transnational progressivism—global governance and the European Union—are supplanting liberal democracy and nation-states and driving us into the stage of post-democracy. The EU wants to replace the project that is malfunctioning today by even bigger doses of the same. That is entirely absurd.’

The President is also a leading critic of the theory of man-made climate change.

James M. Taylor: Global Warming Activist David Roberts Slams the Qualifications of IPCC's Top Scientists

Article Tags: James M. Taylor

David Roberts, a blogger for the environmental activist website Grist.org, has inadvertently delivered a hammer blow against the scientific expertise at the very top of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

In an interview on KUOW radio in Seattle yesterday, Roberts attempted to minimize the scientific expertise of scientists who have spoken at the Heartland Institute’s International Conference on Climate Change by saying there are “only a few scattered scientists, but mostly meteorologists or engineers or political figures.”

We’ll come back to the qualifications of those who have actually spoken at the climate change conferences in a moment. Now, however, let’s analyze Roberts’ assertion that meteorologists and engineers do not qualify as scientific experts regarding global warming.

Roberts does not believe engineers are scientists qualified to weigh in on global warming? I am glad you feel that way, David. David Roberts, meet Raj Pachauri.

James Delingpole: Official: Great Barrier Reef doing just fine

I have just been snorkelling over the Great Barrier Reef. (Not all of it: it's 1,600 miles long). And I can now officially confirm that it's doing just fine. The fish and corals are in excellent shape. Not one of the bits I investigated showed any signs of a) overheating due to global warming, b) dissolving due to ocean acifidication or c) collapsing in despair at man's selfishness, greed and refusal to amend his lifestyle.

Who'da thunk, eh?

But this didn't, of course, stop our snorkel guide slipping in global warming, as a matter of course – a bit like when in the old days Christians used to say grace before dinner – into his introductory talk. Nor did it stop the craft on which we travelled, spewing, to the reef bearing signs from the Queensland park authorities claiming that ocean acidification is real.

Why do they expose us to this alarmist drivel? Because, like the polar bear (but unlike, say, the snail darter), the Great Barrier Reef is big and impressive and captures the public imagination. If somehow it can be co-opted by the eco-loons into their ongoing campaign to destroy the world economy and ensure that as many parts of the globe as possible become virtual no-go areas for humans, policed by brown-shirted enviro-zealots, then co-opt it they will.

Take it from me: the Great Barrier Reef is going to survive a hell of a lot longer than Catastrophic Anthropogenic Warming Theory.

As per note from Piers Corbyn...Red Warning periods – are now standardized R1 to R5 (most extreme effect)

The above chart is a special advance listing of the May Earthquake & Major Volcano "Red Warning" periods from Piers Corbyn.

The "Red Warning" chart, published on May 1st, highlights three major "Solar Lunar" periods, and two still remain, 19th - 21st May (R4) and the 23rd - 25th (R5). Piers originally expected the timing of these to influence the Earth's tectonic plate structure and produce M6.5+ Earthquakes as well as an increase in Volcanic activity, based on his previous findings.

As you would have noted the first major period (5th - 7th May - R4) was a FAIL and we think the new condition of the SUN (four magnetic poles instead of two) may have contributed to it's lesser predictable behaviour for this first major period of May. In doing so, the remainder of May could result in two more FAILS, hence this advance listing.

Let’s stop conflating the creationist hoi polloi with skeptical climate scientists.

My friends on the left make much of the apparent correlation between creationism and skepticism about assured climate disaster. It is the “some–all fallacy” writ large. “Some” climate scientists who happen to believe in intelligent design, a variant of creationism, also question the high-sensitivity climate model. Therefore “all” who hypothesize that warming has been overblown must also question evolution; i.e., they are ignorant dolts.

Note to the Left on this one: No one — scientist or otherwise — has yet come up with the definitive explanation of the first life forms on earth. There is no conclusive bridge between self-replicating molecules capable of mutation (a definition of life) and the primordial, lifeless, dimly-lit planet Earth of some 3 billion years ago. So even the most erudite thinkers must resort to aliens, life-bearing comets, God — or, in my case, beats-the-heck-out-of-me.

My lefty friends are somewhat condescending towards skeptical climate scientists. Who hasn’t heard of Chris Mooney’s drivel that Republicans (in general), and those who think climate change isn’t horrible (in particular), are mentally ill? I guess it’s a good way to win an argument; after all, I think the people I disagree with are nuts, too.

Michael Asten: Science hijacked at school level

Article Tags: Education, Michael Asten

THIS year will be remembered as the one where debate on the implications of climate change science became respectable. In this newspaper on December 31 last year we had the views of professors of geology Mike Sandiford on cherry-picking of data with reply on January 4 by Ian Plimer. In February we had internationally published articles by 16 eminent sceptical scientists, with reply by 39 equally eminent scientists from the mainstream anthropogenic global warming school of thinking.

In March and April we read opposing views in articles by Mike Steketee, sceptics Bob Carter and others, and marine scientists Neville Exon and Tim Moltmann on the existence and danger of rise in sea levels. Two weeks ago the ABC caught up with the trend with an informative study of the views and sources of sceptic politician Nick Minchin and youth activist Anna Rose, and The Age contributed with opinion pieces by these two co-stars of the ABC production.

Not all viewpoints in all these items can be classified as objective, but even the departures from objectivity are informative on the culture of the debate.

My concern is that secondary science education in Australia has not kept up with such objective debate. While there is a wider problem with general resourcing and teaching in science education (a "learning crisis" in the words of Australia's chief scientist Ian Chubb) it is especially noticeable in climate change science.

When the Greek poet Homer was writing The Odyssey around 2,800 years ago, the Earth went through an abrupt period of cooling, caused by the sun - and the same could happen again soon.

Scientists at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences analysed lake sediment in Lake Meerfelder Maar, and found direct evidence of a sudden cooling caused by a 'solar minimum'.

Some scientists suspect that the current period of high solar activity - including increased sunspots and solar storms this year - will be followed by a 'minimum' period, which could even cause an Ice Age.

Britain's coldest May in more than 300 years will deliver 50mph gales, 5cm (2in) of rain and flooding.

Central England temperatures so far this month average 8.6C, 1.6C below normal.

The last time May was colder was in 1698, at 8.5C over the whole month.

And the Met Office has warned that weeks of wet weather ahead could wash out the Queen’s diamond jubilee celebrations.

The Environment Agency issued two flood warnings and 14 alerts, warning of high tides swamping coastlines across South Wales.

Up to 2cm of rain will fall across the south and Midlands today. Severe weather warnings have been issued in the south-west. Wednesday and Thursday will see many parts hit by another 3cm of rain – totalling 5cm, or a month’s worth, in 24 hours – with localised flooding and transport problems expected. Warnings have been issued....

I'm going to call the First Solar Climate Change for May 2012 as a rare FAIL for the Major Earthquake (M6.5+) and Volcanic Eruption prediction. This was probably down to the sun entering a ‘muddled’ magnetic state, but we will never know for sure.

The "Solar Lunar" forecast from Piers Corbyn is like a "Tide Chart". In "Earthbound" terms we all know when to expect "High and Low" tides each day due to the effect of the Moon on the Oceans, but when it comes to working with Solar information in conjunction with the location of the Moon we can't always assume the Sun will be a constant variable like the Moon on the Oceans.

If the Sun FAILS with its expected solar output we simply miss a beat for that period, or in "Earthbound" terms the Tide did not come in or go out when we expected it to do so, but it will continue to come back in and go out most of the time in a predictable way in the future.

My guest today for the second hour is Prof. Bob Carter:

Prof. Carter is the author of Climate: the Counter Consensus, a book which has received accolades from scientists, politicians and the general public, and you can read some of the reviews here.

In today's interview, Prof. Carter steps us through some of the key assumptions behind the mainstream science of climate change, and shows us why they are wrong. His expertise in paleoclimatology provides an insight into the deeper patterns of nature which shape the world - a perspective which is completely lacking in the relatively immature "climate science" field which informs both media coverage and government policy.

Climate Protest: 13 arrested for blockading coal train, including Nobel Prize winning economist by Jeremy Hance

Article Tags: Climate Protest

Thirteen Canadians were peacefully arrested this weekend for blockading Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railway tracks in order to prevent the passage of coal from the United States and destined to be burned in Asia. Among those arrested was Mark Jaccard, an economics professor with Simon Fraser University, who won the Nobel Prize for his work with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The act of civil disobedience was a protest against the on-going burning of coal for energy, since coal is the world's most carbon-intensive fuel and thereby a major driver of climate change.

"The window of opportunity for avoiding a high risk of runaway, irreversible climate change is closing quickly. Within this decade we will either have steered away from disaster, or have locked ourselves onto a dangerous course," Jaccard wrote in a statement prior to his arrest. "Our governments continue to ignore the warnings of scientists and push forward with policies that will accelerate the burning of fossil fuels. Private interests—coal, rail, oil, pipeline companies and the rest—continue to push their profit driven agenda, heedless of the impact on the rest of us. This has to stop."
