FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

InterAcademy Council Asked to Review Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands -- The InterAcademy Council (IAC), a multinational organization of the world's science academies, has been requested to conduct an independent review of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) processes and procedures. The study comes at the invitation of the United Nations secretary-general and the chair of the IPCC, and will help guide the processes and procedures of the IPCC's fifth report and future assessments of climate science.

The IAC has been asked to establish an ad hoc Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) of experts from relevant fields to conduct the review and to present recommendations on possible revisions of IPCC practices and procedures. In addition, the IEG is asked to recommend measures and actions to strengthen the IPCC's capacity to respond to future challenges and ensure the ongoing quality of its reports.

Founded in 2000, the IAC was created to mobilize top scientists and engineers around the world to provide evidence-based advice to international bodies such as the United Nations and World Bank -- including preparing expert, peer-reviewed studies upon request. The IAC Board is composed of the presidents of 15 academies of science and equivalent organizations -- representing Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States, plus the African Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) -- and representatives of the InterAcademy Panel (IAP) of scientific academies, the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS), and the InterAcademy Medical Panel (IAMP) of medical academies. The IAC Secretariat is hosted by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in Amsterdam. The IAC Board has final approval authority over conducting and publishing IAC studies.

Tide is turning on global warming by Robert Gentle, BusinessDay.com
Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk must be a sucker for punishment if he’s putting himself up for the job of deputy United Nations climate chief (Van Schalkwyk has SA nod for UN job, March 9).

That’s because the UN’s flagship climate body, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), has become a laughing stock as revelations pile up about dodgy science, erroneous forecasts and outright manipulation of data. Not for nothing is it known in sceptic circles as the International Panel of Climate Crooks.

Meanwhile, newer published studies around climate science, more accurate temperature records from satellites, and freezing snow and blizzards in much of the northern hemisphere continue to undermine the thesis of man-made global warming.

The tide is turning.

The smart money is on global warming going the same way as bird flu, swine flu, Y2K, the ozone layer, the population explosion, the food crisis, the energy crisis, global cooling and the litany of Armageddon-type predictions of the past 30 years that never came to pass.
THE chairman of the ABC, Maurice Newman, has told about 250 leading journalists, program-makers and managers at the ABC that the media had displayed "group-think" on the issue of climate change in a speech that led to a feisty exchange with senior journalists and forced managing director Mark Scott to try to smooth the waters.

Describing himself as an agnostic on climate change, Mr Newman said climate change was an example "of group-think where contrary views have not been tolerated, and where those who express them have been labelled and mocked".

He warned ABC staffers that he would not tolerate anyone suppressing information, citing the fact that a BBC science correspondent knew for a month before the scandal broke of damaging emails at the University of East Anglia in Britain highlighting the politicised nature of climate science but did not report them.

Mr Newman said the Guardian newspaper had noted that the moment climatology is sheltered from dispute, its force begins to wane.

"Which raises an important question for a media organisation," Mr Newman said in the speech obtained by The Australian. "Who, if anyone, decides what to shelter from dispute? And when?

There is an English saying that you have “lies, damned lies and statistics”. Here, I would like to introduce a variation on this expression: “There are lies, damned lies, statistics … and sloppy science”.

This morning, there was lot of noise in the Dutch media (unfortunately in Dutch only) about new research that was claiming a dramatic warming of 4 degrees in 2050. The news report quoted Dutch econometricians from the University of Tilburg. They had done a statistical analysis of temperature data and the influence of CO2 and solar radiation and concluded that aerosols masked much more of the warming of greenhouse gases than previously thought. This also means there is more warming in the pipeline for the future if the trend of global brightening, that has been detected by researcher Martin Wild of ETH in Zürich, will continue in the coming decades. They also draw policy conclusions from their research stating that in order to avoid more than 2 degree warming more drastic measures are to be taken.

This news was copied by many Dutch news outlets.

The United Nations is to announce an independent review of errors made by its climate change advisory body in an attempt to restore its credibility.

A team of the world’s leading scientists will investigate the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and ask why its supposedly rigorous procedures failed to detect at least three serious overstatements of the risk from global warming.

The review will be overseen by the InterAcademy Council, whose members are drawn from the world’s leading national science academies, including Britain’s Royal Society, the United States National Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The review will be led by Robbert Dijkgraaf, co-chairman of the Interacademy Council and president of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

He has been asked to investigate the internal processes of the IPCC and will not consider the overarching question of whether it was right to claim that human activities were very likely to be causing global warming.

The review, which will be announced in New York by Ban Ki Moon, the UN Secretary General, and Rajendra Pachauri, the IPCC chairman, is expected to recommend stricter checking of sources and much more careful wording to reflect the uncertainties in many areas of climate science.
Climategate: George Monbiot despairs of the AGW cause – 'There goes my life's work' by Gerald Warner, The Telegraph

Article Tags: Gerald Warner

Sad news: George Monbiot, the high priest of the AGW cult, is feeling frustrated and depressed. He is oppressed by the realisation that, as the politicians phrase it, he is not getting his message across. And this blog, at least in a small way, bears some part of the responsibility. From his pontifical throne in the Vatican of global warming – The Guardian – he has issued an anathema. Quoting from a recent anti-AGW scam posting by me, he observes: “The attack on climate scientists is now widening to an all-out war on science.”

Don’t get carried away, George. It is only an all-out war on bogus science, such as the global warming superstition you champion. The good guys can carry on inventing antibiotics and curing diseases with our whole-hearted support. It is the con men who have taken Al Gore’s shilling that we distrust and despise. Monbiot even has some insight into this. Of the perception of scientists as sinister schemers he concedes: “Sometimes this isn’t far from the truth.”

He cites those scientists who have weaponised anthrax, or isolated terminator genes for biotech companies to prevent farmers from saving seed, or written misleading endorsements of drugs for pharmaceutical companies. He even denounces the practices of scientific journals “whose monopolistic practices make the supermarkets look like angels”. I wonder if he has had a word with Phil Jones about that.

Wars come and go, cities are destroyed and rebuilt, monuments are erected, and life goes on. This is the traditional view of war, but right now the world is engaged in the latest battle of a “climate war” that has been going on since the 1970s when the Club of Rome concluded in a report titled, “The real enemy then, is humanity itself”, that the world’s population had to be reduced.

Whereas wars in the modern era have killed millions and communism as practiced in the former Soviet Union and the early decades of Red China under Chairman Mao killed millions more on a scale with which war could not compete, the advocates of population reduction rival the worst despots to have ever walked among us.

With the revelations from leaked emails between the conspirators who kept the global warming fraud going for many years, the so-called “climate scientists” who, in fact, had created phony computer models and engaged in endless studies to “prove” that global warming posed a threat to mankind, the term “Climategate” was coined to describe their collusion.

After errors, global warming gets a cold shoulder by Beth Daley, The Boston Globe

Article Tags: Public Polls

Critics point to mistakes, e-mail theft to raise doubts on research; poll shows less public concern

A series of highly publicized errors in a landmark report about manmade global warming - and lingering controversy over hacked e-mails between climate scientists - is eroding public confidence in the research and could further stall efforts in Congress to pass climate legislation.

The errors - involving projections, citations of source materials, and geography - have been seized on by skeptics of the scientific consensus that the burning of fossil fuels is almost certainly the most significant cause of earth’s rising temperature. Now, there are signs the critics are succeeding at raising doubts.

In recent weeks, Texas, Virginia, and Alabama officials filed challenges to the Environmental Protection Agency’s finding that manmade greenhouse gases threaten public health, and Senator Jay Rockefeller, a Democrat from the coal state of West Virginia, introduced a bill to postpone for two years EPA rules stemming from that determination.

Republican senators have pointed to the errors as another reason to oppose a climate bill, spearheaded by Senator John F. Kerry, that would limit carbon dioxide emissions.

The only thing heating up is the debate by Lorne Gunter, National Post

Article Tags: Lorne Gunter

If you are driving a car (say an unrepaired Toyota) and it suddenly surges up to very high speeds, then runs out of gas, it may be true that the first 100 metres after the tank goes dry are the fastest 100 metres the car has ever travelled. It does not follow, though, that the car is still accelerating dangerously. Or at all.

In their attempt to repair the recent damage to their climate-change cause, environmentalists — such as former U.S. Vice-President Al Gore, whose defence of the climate-change theory appears opposite — have begun pointing out that the last decade was “the hottest decade since modern records have been kept.”

“What is important,” Mr. Gore writes, is not the errors and manipulations recently uncovered in the work of the UN and leading climate scientist, but rather “that the overwhelming consensus on global warming remains unchanged.”

To both claims, I say, “So what?”

Since 1998, we haven’t seen things heating up. One of the four main sources of worldwide temperatures (NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies) claims 2005 was hotter — slightly — than 1998. But the point is, the trend over the last 12 years been roughly flat. The earth is not getting warmer, at least not significantly. Global warming has paused.

So think of the climate like our runaway car. Temperatures rose rapidly from 1979. Yet after 1998, the climb seems to have run out of gas. It’s been warm since, but it is no longer getting warmer rapidly, if at all.

Green pressure groups get €66 million from the EU by Daniel Hannan, The Telegraph

Article Tags: Green Tax

Have you ever wondered why the eco-lobby is so pro-EU? Now you have your answer. Green pressure groups are becoming financially dependent on Brussels. Ten years ago, they received €2,337,924 from the European Commission; last year, it was €8,749,940.

A study by the International Policy Network reveals the extent to which Green lobbyists look to the EU for their income: Climate Action Network, Friends of the Earth, WWF, they’re all at it. Much of this money, the paper shows, is then recycled into lobbying the EU.

You see how the system works? The EU pays eco-lobbyists to tell it what it wants to hear. Its clients, naturally enough, tell it that the EU ought to increase its powers. A similar racket goes on between Brussels and the mega-charities (see here).

This isn’t just bad for democracy; it’s bad for the environment, because it equates conservation with state intervention and supranationalism. One of these Brussels-funded organisations recently produced a league of which MEPs were greenest. I like to think that I am pretty eco-conscious. I try never to fly or drive when trains are an option; Mrs H sources food locally, and reuses and recycles meticulously; we even had washable nappies for our children. But I came near the bottom of the table because I had voted consistently against giving more power to Brussels.

That’s the Left for you, I suppose, elevating motive over action, valuing the moralistic over the moral.

LONDON, 9 March 2010 - In the few short months since its launch last November, the GWPF has already been able to make a considerable impact on the climate debate. As a result of growing interest and support, the GWPF can announce today that it is expanding its Academic Advisory Council with the addition of seven eminent scientists and economists from Europe, North America and Asia. This brings the total membership of the Council to 22.

Dr Benny Peiser, the director of the GWPF said: "The GWPF has already established itself as a voice of reason and moderation in what I hope is the start of an emerging international organisation. While climate science and climate policy face a crisis of credibility, we are attracting more and more backing from level-headed researchers from around the world.

Our aim is to become the most trustworthy source for those who wish to be informed of the most reliable and authoritative analysis of both the claims of climate campaigners and the policies currently in place or being discussed."

Nigel Lawson, the GWPF chairman said: "I warmly welcome our new Academic Advisory Council members, who embrace a variety of viewpoints, and whose advice will be invaluable as we develop our activities, as we intend to do, over the coming year."

Here I sit on March 8th 2010, looking out of my window with a bright sun, frost on the grass in the shade all day, no daffodils anywhere near flowering and the snowdrops (normally flowering by late January) the only sign of recovery from a four month cessation of all biosphere activity in my garden in a relatively mild, coastal, rain shadow affected, south facing portion of the UK.

Not quite what were led to expect from all those politically motivated, wild extrapolations from the run of increasingly early springs and nice warm summers and inoffensive winters which we in the UK did undoubtedly observe from the late 1970’s to around 2000.

What happened to all that potentially catastrophic warming that was supposed to be a consequence of my (and your) energy profligacy in enjoying the ability to move around freely and quickly, heat our homes adequately in cold weather, entertain and educate ourselves with the TV, reduce death and disease worldwide to an incredible extent, gain instant access to huge reserves of information about anything and everything and communicate with each to an extent previously unheard of in history via computer and internet?
Is Mankind Destroying Earth’s climate?
If polar bears are endangered by global warming, why have bear populations more than doubled in the last 50 years?
After building more than 20,000 wind turbine towers, why have Germany and Denmark been unable to close a single coal-fired power plant?
Former Vice President Al Gore says critics of his global warming warnings are part of a "massive, organized campaign."

Appearing on the Norwegian talk show “Skavlan” to promote his newest book "Our Choice," Gore said:

“There has been a very large, organized campaign to try to convince people that it [global warming] is not real, to try to convince people that they shouldn't worry about it.

"In my country, the oil and coal companies spent $500 million last year just on television advertising just on these questions. There are now five anti-climate lobbyists on Capitol Hill in Washington for every member of the House and Senate. So it's been a very massive, organized campaign."

Gore was asked if it's "quite different to be Al Gore today” compared to three years ago, before people started to lose interest in the climate issue and before heavy criticism of his global warming warnings.
Mr Al Gore science has to stand up to fact NOT fiction.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was specifically designed by Maurice Strong as a political vehicle to further his objective of crippling the industrial nations

Scientists at the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) built a dam to contain a lake full of dirty water. Someone behind the dam drilled a hole and sprang a leak. The flow is small but growing and the color of the water gets dirtier and dirtier and the size of the hole will increase as the extent of the corruption expands. Now a second major leak has developed in a different area as people dig through the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Reports. The structure of the organization made this almost inevitable. However, the structure was necessary to achieve the political rather than a scientific goal.

Bureaucratic Structure

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was specifically designed by Maurice Strong as a political vehicle to further his objective of crippling the industrial nations. An acknowledged master of bureaucratic systems he set up every segment of the organization for the maximum public relations effect. This meant emphasis on emotional impact, especially by exploiting fear. The first need was to direct and control the science. It was achieved at the 1985 meeting in Villach Austria chaired by Canadian bureaucrat Gordon McBean with Phil Jones and Tom Wigley from CRU in attendance. The second need was for maximizing the fear factor to force political action.
Introduction

Recently published peer-reviewed scientific research offers a new explanation as to the cause of the increase in the earth’s average temperature in the late 20th century, casting doubt on two broadly held assumptions: the first, that it was caused by manmade CO2; and the second, that it was caused by natural phenomena. The research suggests that the increasing temperatures resulted instead from other manmade compounds interacting with natural phenomena.

Significantly, an international environmental agreement in force since 1989 mandates controls on the production and use of the very compounds considered by the new research to be the primary cause of the warmer temperatures. Due to compliance with the mandates on the part of the 191 signatory countries, there has been a decrease in the presence of these compounds in the atmosphere. The new research highlights a tight correlation between this decrease and the decrease in the earth’s average temperature, both of which began in about 2000.

The overwhelming acceptance of the assumption that manmade CO2 was responsible for the earth’s warming has led to laws and regulations that represent a financial threat to government, industry, and the citizens of the world. By suspending the enforcement and future adoption of such laws and regulations until the findings discussed in this report are reviewed, the potential consequences can be averted.
Green scientists still using trickery, Continue to bamboozle the public with idiotic and unscientific ‘proof’

In previous articles I have shown that correlation does not equal causation. I have shown that an increase in atmospheric CO2 does not prove any connection with weather or climate.

Green scientists already know that correlation does not establish a cause-and-effect relationship between two variables. And, as I said in my last article, now they have dramatically increased the number of variables, such an effect would be impossible to establish because of the complexity of the supposed links! Yet, they continue to bamboozle the public with idiotic and unscientific ‘proof’ that humans cause the increase in CO2 and the increase in CO2 ‘causes’ climate change!

On the other hand, a time series correlation can eliminate a cause-and-effect relationship. To quote scientist Wayne P Kraus (private email):
Climate change researchers at the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit (CRU) are accused of withholding raw data and the computer code they used to generate results despite repeated requests for the information to be released publicly.

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) have both issued statements declaring that it is essential that scientific data and evidence compiled by researchers be made publicly available for scrutiny.

Their comments come after the Institute of Physics said that emails sent by Professor Phil Jones, head of the CRU, had broken "honourable scientific traditions" about disclosing raw data and methods.

In a written submission to the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee, which is conducting an inquiry into the disclosure of data from the CRU, the RSC said a lack of willingness to disclose research data had "far-reaching consequences".
Global warming may be normal at this point in glacial cycle, by Lewis Page, The Register

Article Tags: Lewis Page

German and Russian scientists say that it is normal for an interglacial period like the one just ending to finish with one or more brief - in geological terms - spells of warming before the glaciers return.

According to boffins based at the Helmholtz-Zentrum für Umweltforschung (UFZ) and at the Russian Academy of Sciences, in the Earth's history thus far there have been eras where the glaciers covered much of Europe, lasting about 100,000 years. These are separated by warmer interglacial periods lasting around 10,000 years. We are currently at the end of an interglacial era called the Holocene.

The scientists, looking into the last interglacial period - the Eemian - which ended around 115,000 years ago, say they have found that that it ended with "significant climate fluctuations" before the rule of the glaciers returned.

The scientists got their results by examining ancient lake sediments exposed by modern open-cast mining in Russia and Germany. They believe that the end of the Eemian interglacial epoch saw "possibly at least two" warming events, according to a statement issued by the UFZ.

Experts predict that, over the long term, food security can't be achieved without energy security. Add in mechanization, storage, and transport and the energy impact of a typical meal in industrialized nations is many times the amount of energy the meal's consumer derives. Recently, researchers have been taking a close look at just how much energy it takes to produce even seemingly similar foods. The conclusion: Food choices can have a significant impact on energy use in agriculture, and by extension, on greenhouse gas emissions as well. Beef lovers beware! As the world diverts more of its grain harvests into meat production, some scientists are taking a closer look at more environmentally friendly sources of protein, including insects.

Attacks on meat eating are nothing new. In 2003, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health started “Meatless Mondays,” an initiative to reduce U.S. meat consumption by 15%. More recently, a number of pop celebrities, including Paul McCartney and Sheryl Crow, started a campaign for “Meet Free Mondays.” Indian economist and IPCC head R. Pachauri , who is also a vegetarian, encouraged all people to “give up meat for one day [a week] initially, and decrease it from there.”

As we reported in The Resilient Earth, others have pursued this story for different purposes. The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization has estimated that meat production accounts for nearly a fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions. ABC News picked up the story in an article titled “Meat-Eaters Aiding Global Warming? New Research Suggests What You Eat as Important as What You Drive.” In it they reported that you should become a vegetarian if you want to help lower greenhouse gas emissions. They quoted researchers who liken eating red meat to driving an SUV. This position would certainly be supported by PETA, the group running the GoVeg.com web site.

Now, according to a news article in Science, if people in the developed world ate less meat, it would free up a lot of grain that could feed billions of hungry people. A lot of good farmland could be converted from grazing to crop production as well. As article author Erik Stokstad put it in “ Less Meat Mean More Food?”:
Global Warming has no impact on Himalayas claims Wadia Director, by Ashwani Maindola, Hindustan Times

Article Tags: Himalayan Glacier Data

Senior scientists at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WITG) has rejected the Global Warming Theory and told that the Himalayas are quite safer zone on earth, where Global Warming has no role in controlling the conditions.

In an exclusive chat with HT, Director WIHG Dr AK Dubey has said that the conditions of Himalayas are controlled by the winter snowfall rather than external factors like much hyped Global Warming. He told that for a concrete result, at least 30 years of continuous research with steady outcome is needed to confirm the actual impact.

"According to a data for over 140 years available with a British weather observatory situated in Mukteswar (2311m) in Almora has actually revealed that temperature in that region witnessed a dip of .4 degrees," he said.

Since 1991, the institute is monitoring the Himalayas extensively with focusing the glacial studies and last twenty year data has never witnessed a continual retreat. Sometimes, the recession rates have gone up but on an average the rate is very much safer, he added.
You Could Not Make It Up: Climate change mythbuster, News Of The World

Article Tags: You could not make it up

THE News of the World is urging every one of our eight million readers to back the WWF's Earth Hour this month.

By switching off lights for an hour at 8.30pm on March 27 you'll remind politicians just how important climate change is.

Here, WWF's head of climate change KEITH ALLOTT answers critics who claim it is just a myth.

MYTH: Climate change is not really happening.

BUSTED: The planet's climate has changed throughout its history. It can be affected by natural events like volcanos. But it's clear that the Earth is warming and that natural factors are not responsible.

There's very solid evidence that man-made "greenhouse" gases, mainly CO2, are the cause and that warming will become dangerous unless we act quickly to cut emissions.

MYTH: The jury is still out on climate change because there is disagreement about whether it is caused by humans.

BUSTED: Normally scientists like to argue and seldom agree. But the fact that the vast majority agree climate change is happening and humans are behind it speaks volumes. Ignoring this huge risk to the planet would be irresponsible.

Some people suggest it is easier to adapt to a warming planet rather than cut greenhouse gas emissions. We will definitely need to cope with some big changes - but if the world warms too much or too quickly it could become very difficult or impossible to adapt.
Article Tags: Book, Ian McEwan

I just noticed this comment from an article from the Sunday Times by Maurice Chittenden

IT was meant to be a cultural response to climate change. The mission: charter a sailing boat in the Arctic and take 12 leading artists and writers to ponder on the perils of climate change in their work.

Unfortunately, no one seems to have explained the plot to Ian McEwan, the novelist. His new work, Solar, sends up the expedition with such glee that it has received a frosty reception from some of his fellow adventurers.

So I thought I would look at the Ian McEwan site and see what all the fuss is about, and here is what I found.....

Random House is delighted to announce the publication of a new novel by Ian McEwan, Solar.

Solar is an engrossing and satirical novel which focuses on climate change and will be published on 18 March 2010. This story – of one man’s ambitions and self-deceptions – is a stylish new work by one of the word’s greatest living writers.

Michael Beard is in his late fifties; bald, overweight, unprepossessing – a Nobel prize-winning physicist whose best work is behind him. Trading on his reputation, he speaks for enormous fees, lends his name to the letterheads of renowned scientific institutions and half-heartedly heads a government-backed initiative tackling global warming. An inveterate philanderer, Beard finds his fifth marriage floundering. When Beard’s professional and personal worlds are entwined in a freak accident, an opportunity presents itself, a chance for Beard to extricate himself from his marital mess, reinvigorate his career and very possibly save the world from environmental disaster.

Dan Franklin, Publisher, comments: ‘Solar is a novel about one of the most serious threats to our world – global warming – but is also very, very funny. It shows a fresh side to Ian McEwan’s work, that he’s a comic writer of genius.’

I look forward to reading this, good luck Ian

Sea ice extent for the past 5 years (in million km2) for the northern hemisphere, as a function of date.

Arctic Sea Ice Extent Highest in 6 Years

From the Copenhagen Centre for Ocean and Ice of the Danish Meteorological Institute

Total sea ice extent on the northern hemisphere since 2005. The ice extent values are calculated from the ice type data from the Ocean and Sea Ice, Satellite Application Facility (OSISAF), where areas with ice concentration higher than 30% are classified as ice.

The total area of sea ice is the sum of First Year Ice (FYI), Multi Year Ice (MYI) and the area of ambiguous ice types, from the OSISAF ice type product. However, the total estimated ice area is underestimated due to unclassified coastal regions where mixed land/sea pixels confuse the applied ice type algorithm. The shown sea ice extent values are therefore recommended be used qualitatively in relation to ice extent values from other years shown in the figure. In 2010 sea ice climatology and anomaly data will be available here.
In Denial by Steven F. Hayward, The Weekly Standard

The meltdown of the climate campaign.

It is increasingly clear that the leak of the internal emails and documents of the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in November has done for the climate change debate what the Pentagon Papers did for the Vietnam war debate 40 years ago—changed the narrative decisively. Additional revelations of unethical behavior, errors, and serial exaggeration in climate science are rolling out on an almost daily basis, and there is good reason to expect more.

The U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), hitherto the gold standard in climate science, is under fire for shoddy work and facing calls for a serious shakeup. The U.S. Climate Action Partnership, the self-serving coalition of environmentalists and big business hoping to create a carbon cartel, is falling apart in the wake of the collapse of any prospect of enacting cap and trade in Congress. Meanwhile, the climate campaign’s fallback plan to have the EPA regulate greenhouse gas emissions through the cumbersome Clean Air Act is generating bipartisan opposition. The British media—even the left-leaning, climate alarmists of the Guardian and BBC—are turning on the climate campaign with a vengeance. The somnolent American media, which have done as poor a job reporting about climate change as they did on John Edwards, have largely averted their gaze from the inconvenient meltdown of the climate campaign, but the rock solid edifice in the newsrooms is cracking. Al Gore was conspicuously missing in action before surfacing with a long article in the New York Times on February 28, reiterating his familiar parade of horribles: The sea level will rise! Monster storms! Climate refugees in the hundreds of millions! Political chaos the world over! It was the rhetorical equivalent of stamping his feet and saying “It is too so!” In a sign of how dramatic the reversal of fortune has been for the climate campaign, it is now James Inhofe, the leading climate skeptic in the Senate, who is eager to have Gore testify before Congress.
How will David Cameron keep the lights on? by Christopher Booker

Article Tags: Christopher Booker

Neither of the main parties seems to have any idea how we are to meet the looming shortfall in power.

As the election approaches, two issues should transcend all others.

One, obviously, is what the parties propose to do about the £178 billion deficit in government spending. But another, equally terrifying – as this column has warned for years – is what is to be done to avert the fast-looming crisis in Britain’s electricity supplies. With 40 per cent of our generating capacity due to disappear in the next few years, as 14 of our major nuclear and coal-fired power stations are forced to close, how do the parties propose to keep Britain’s lights on and our computer-dependent economy functioning?

The energy policy of the Conservative Party appears to rest on four main pillars. The first is that electricity companies should not be allowed to replace those coal-fired power stations which help provide us with 35 per cent of our electricity unless new ones are fitted with a system to pipe off their CO2 emissions and bury them under the North Sea. The Government has allocated some £4 billion for four new plants to pioneer this unproven technology (to be paid for by all of us through electricity bills), but the Tories say that no new plants should be permitted unless carbon capture is already in place.

Some of America’s top ”warmist” scientists are planning a counter-attack on the “climate sceptics”.

Some of America’s top ”warmist” scientists, demoralised at how their faith is being discredited, are planning a counter-attack on the “climate sceptics”, according to the Washington Times. “We’re not in a gentlepersons’ debate, we’re in a street fight against well-funded, merciless enemies who play by entirely different rules,” says Paul Ehrlich of Stanford University.

As for “well-funded”, a new study by Jo Nova suggests that, in the US alone, the $79 billion (£52bn) of state funding for pro-warming research in the past 20 years outweighs the money given to climate sceptics by 3,500 to one. As for Prof Ehrlich, he is best known for his 1968 bestseller The Population Bomb which, as well as catastrophic climate change, predicted that hundreds of millions of people would starve to death in the 1970s. He also forecast that by 1980 the average age of death in the US would be 42, due to pesticides. Sounds like just the man to restore our faith in true “science”.

Ancient Sea-levels Rewrite Ice Age Transitions by Doug L. Hoffman

Article Tags: Doug L. Hoffman

There have been a rash of bogus reports in the news media about rapidly rising sea-levels supposedly caused by global warming. Sea-levels are notoriously hard to measure on a global basis since land also rises and sinks due to tectonic activity. With historical records mostly unreliable how can we tell if current conditions are normal for Earth 14,000 years after a deglaciation? A new report, based on calcium growths in caves on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, says that sea levels around 81,000 years ago were higher than today. Higher sea-levels imply less glacial ice and warmer temperatures than today as well. Even more interesting is that this occurred during a warm period called marine isotope stage (MIS) 5a, which was more than 30,000 years after the Eemian interglacial ended and glaciation had resumed. This could mean that current theories about how ice age glacial periods start are wrong.

Scientists have long made a strong connection between Earth's climate and sea-levels. Warmer climate means less glacial ice and higher ocean water levels. This means that during glacial periods, often called ice ages, sea-levels drop because more water is trapped in glacial ice. Scientists know from paleoclimate records that the end of a glacial period occurs quickly and is accompanied by wild swings in climatic conditions. But because the buildup of large amounts of glacial ice depends on precipitation it was thought that descent into a new glacial period was a more gradual affair. A report in Science, entitled “Sea-Level Highstand 81,000 Years Ago in Mallorca,” authored by Jeffrey A. Dorale and colleagues, not only claims that sea-levels were higher than modern levels during ages past but that there have been significant swings in sea levels after the last interglacial warm period ended.

Global Warming Conference Heats Up in May 2010 by Todd Wynn, OregonCatalyst.com
CHICAGO, IL USA - What a difference a year makes! Last year at this time, global warming "skeptics" were dismissed as being a fringe group of dissenters from "the overwhelming consensus" of scientific opinion. Now, their critics are admitting that the science is far from settled and that global warming is not the crisis it was once made out to be.

Recent months have seen the collapse of international negotiations for a global warming treaty in Copenhagen, revelations of scientific fraud committed by a leading climate research organization, and demands for the resignation of the chairman of the United Nations' global warming panel. British and Canadian newspapers are declaring the end of the global warming "fraud."

The first major international meeting of global warming "skeptics" since Copenhagen, Climategate, and other extraordinary developments will take place in Chicago on May 16-18, 2010. It is the fourth such conference convened by the nonprofit Heartland Institute and scores of allied organizations, and it promises to be the largest and most consequential yet.

More than 70 of the world's elite climate scientists and economists, including two former NASA astronauts and scientists from 15 countries, are scheduled to speak at the event, which is open to the public. Among the confirmed presenters are climate scientists Dr. Richard Lindzen of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Dr. Roy Spencer of the University of Alabama at Huntsville and economists Dr. Robert Mendelsohn of Yale University and Dr. Gabriel Calzada of King Juan Carlos University in Madrid.
The news of the shipping trapped by ice in the Baltic could not have come at a worse time for the warmists.

They are desperately trying to mount a counter-attack, with Peter Stott of the Met Office Hadley Centre asserting that there is an "increasingly remote possibility" that human activity is not the main cause of climate change.

Needless to say, Stott brings nothing new to the table by way of research, relying merely on a review of 100 or so previous studies that purport to track changes in the earth's climatic system. The recycled material, however, is dressed up in new clothes, labelled "optimal detection", which we are told shows "clear fingerprints of human-induced global warming."

Unfortunately for Stott, he relies on the usual poster children, highlighting not least Arctic sea ice cover, his bleatings having to compete with reports of ice-bound ferries and cargo ships.

Sceptics can, of course, make hay with these reports - as indeed the warmists have exploited any number of transient weather phenomena – but it is germane to note that the Baltic incident is partly the result of gale-force winds which are compacting the ice and making it difficult to navigate.

A review from the UK Met Office says it is becoming clearer that human activities are causing climate change.

It says the evidence is stronger now than when the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change carried out its last assessment in 2007.

The analysis, published in the Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews Climate Change Journal, has assessed 110 research papers on the subject.

It says the Earth is changing rapidly, probably because of greenhouse gases.

In 2007 the IPCC's report concluded that there was "unequivocal" evidence that the Earth was warming and it was likely that it was due to burning of fossil fuels.

Since then the evidence that human activities are responsible for a rise in temperatures has increased, according to this new assessment by Dr Peter Stott and colleagues at the UK Met Office.
Climate scientists plot to hit back at skeptics by Stephen Dinan, Washington Times

Article Tags: ClimateGate

Undaunted by a rash of scandals over the science underpinning climate change, top climate researchers are plotting to respond with what one scientist involved said needs to be "an outlandishly aggressively partisan approach" to gut the credibility of skeptics.

In private e-mails obtained by The Washington Times, climate scientists at the National Academy of Sciences say they are tired of "being treated like political pawns" and need to fight back in kind. Their strategy includes forming a nonprofit group to organize researchers and use their donations to challenge critics by running a back-page ad in the New York Times.

"Most of our colleagues don't seem to grasp that we're not in a gentlepersons' debate, we're in a street fight against well-funded, merciless enemies who play by entirely different rules," Paul R. Ehrlich, a Stanford University researcher, said in one of the e-mails.

Some scientists question the tactic and say they should focus instead on perfecting their science, but the researchers who are organizing the effort say the political battle is eroding confidence in their work.
The greatest scandal connected to global warming is not exaggeration, fraud or destruction of data to conceal the weakness of the argument. It is those who are personally profiting from promoting this fantasy at the expense of the rest of us.

Al Gore is the most visible beneficiary. The world's greatest climate-change fear-monger has amassed millions in book sales and speaking fees. His science-fiction movie, "An Inconvenient Truth," won an Academy Award for best documentary and 21 other film awards. He was co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his "efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change."

Meanwhile, Mr. Gore was laying his own foundations. As he was whipping up hysteria over climate change, he cannily invested in "green" firms that stood to profit in the hundreds of millions of dollars (if not more) from increased government regulations and sweetheart deals from connected politicians and bureaucrats. The multimillionaire climate dilettante was given a free pass by reporters, who refused to ask him hard questions about the degree to which he was profiting from the panic he was causing.

This article discusses the limits of the Anthropogenic Global Warming Theory advocated by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

A phenomenological theory of climate change based on the physical properties of the data themselves is proposed. At least 60% of the warming of the Earth observed since 1970 appears to be induced by natural cycles which are present in the solar system.

A climatic stabilization or cooling until 2030-2040 is forecast by the phenomenological model.
This paper investigates surface and satellite temperature trends over the period from 1979 to 2008. Surface temperature data sets from the National Climate Data Center and the Hadley Center show larger trends over the 30-year period than the lower-tropospheric data from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and Remote Sensing Systems data sets.

The differences between trends observed in the surface and lower-tropospheric satellite data sets are statistically significant in most comparisons, with much greater differences over land areas than over ocean areas.

These findings strongly suggest that there remain important inconsistencies between surface and satellite records.
Climate snow jobs by Peter Foster, National Post
Snow in the east, no snow in the west: Eureka! Al Gore and Gordon Campbell see the connection

This past week has seen two wonderful examples of that psychological phenomenon known as “confirmation bias,” that is, interpreting whatever evidence presents itself as proof of what you believe. On Sunday, in The New York Times, Al Gore deemed it disgraceful that “deniers” were suggesting that this year’s East Coast Snowmageddon had undermined the Inconvenient Truth of man-made global warming. More snow was clear evidence of the pernicious hand of industrial man. The next day, B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell told The Globe and Mail that the lack of snow at the Vancouver Olympics was due to … man-made global warming.

These deliciously inconsistent claims also spring from the growing desperation of policy entrepreneurs and politicians in the face of greater public skepticism, which is in turn based in mounting evidence of scientific manipulation by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the IPCC.

Premier Campbell has been coming under mounting pressure — ahead of yesterday’s provincial budget — to ditch burdensome carbon taxes. As for Mr. Gore, both his reputation and green investments are on the line, hence we can take his avowal that he would be delighted if the IPCC were wrong as pure baloney.

You Could Not Make It Up: "We are in the middle of earth's sixth extinction" by Cheranka Mendis, DailyMirror.ik
Global warming has triggered the sixth mass extinction of life on earth and this time human life is being threatened along with that of animals and plants due to man-made causes, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Patali Champika Ranawaka said, addressing the Chamber of Pharmaceutical Industries on Monday.

Delivering his presentation on global warming, the Minister explained that there had been five major extinctions in the history of life on earth, with the last one dating back to 65 million years.

"Scientists warn that one third of the animals and plants will disappear by 2050 and they predict that this man made global warming will also lead to extinction of the human race if no action is taken to control it," said Minister Ranawaka.

He said that development tops the list on agendas around the world, with constant focus being on how a company or country can double growth speed and achieve advanced development in the area under scrutiny. However, in the rat race to excessive power, development and all such associated areas, man has simply opted to ignore the natural forces that brought him where he is in the first place.

Thirty Years of Antarctic Snow and Ice Melt from CO2science.org

Article Tags: none

What was done

The two U.S. researchers reviewed what has been learned about the melting of snow and ice over all of Antarctica since 1979, when the phenomenon was first begun to be routinely measured via space-borne passive microwave radiometers.

What was learned

Over the course of the past three decades, Tedesco and Monaghan report that the continent-wide snow and ice melting trend was, in a word, "negligible." And they say that during the 2008-2009 austral summer, scientists from the City University of New York and the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research observed that snow and ice melt was, in a few more words, "a record low for the 30-year period between 1979 and 2009," or as they alternatively describe it, they say it was "a new historical minimum." In addition, they note that "December 2008 temperature anomalies were cooler than normal around most of the Antarctic margin, and the overall sea ice extent for the same month was more extensive than usual."

What it means

Tedesco and Monaghan write that "efforts to understand the relative roles of the natural and anthropogenic mechanisms that influence Antarctic climate variability will be crucial for projecting future melt in Antarctica and subsequent impacts on ice sheet mass balance and sea level," and for all of the climate alarmists who contend that we are already deep into a climate crisis, which will lead to catastrophic sea level rise as a result of anthropogenic CO2-induced melting of earth's polar ice sheets, this finding of the two researchers would be expected to be embarrassing, because there is not the slightest hint of trouble, in this regard, with respect to the Antarctic Ice Sheet.

Crank of the Week - March 1, 2010 - Kendrick Frazier

Article Tags: Doug L. Hoffman

Source Image

Kendrick Frazier, long time editor of the Skeptical Inquirer magazine, has been caught whining on the Inquirer's Facebook page about people canceling their subscriptions. The motivation for the canceled subscriptions is SI's un-skeptical view of anthropogenic global warming. Under Frazier's leadership the “Magazine for Science and Reason” has been sucking up to the climate change mongering American Association for the Advancement of Science and acting as a cheering section for AGW.

According to his Center For Inquiry (CFI) on-line bio, Kendrick Frazier has been the editor of Skeptical Inquirer magazine for over 30 years. He is a member of the National Association of Science Writers and the American Geophysical Union. Unfortunately for the reputation of the Skeptical Inquirer, Frazier has led that formerly respectable magazine into welcoming arms of the AGW true believers.

In 2005, Frazier was made a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for “distinguished contributions to the public understanding of science through writing for and editing popular science magazines that emphasize science news and scientific reasoning and methods.” The AAAS, publisher of the journal Science, has been a vocal supporter of all things climate change for years. Being made a Fellow was just the payoff for a fellow climate change alarmist for subverting the magazine he edits. Much cheaper than thirty pieces of silver.

Needless to say, a number of people who are themselves skeptics have a real problem with the blind eye Frazier has turned toward the question of climate change. This blog has previously addressed SI's betrayal of real skepticism in “Skeptical Inquirer Abandons Reason, Embraces Global Warming.” Now, a letter from a SI subscriber canceling his subscription has evoked a tirade from Editor Frazier. Here is part of the former subscriber's letter:

I find that your treatment of man-made global warming is one of advocacy, not skepticism. CSI has had the opportunity to study the fanatical religion of AGW and the trials and tribulations of its skeptics, but it has failed. I truly can't understand your position on this topic. Climate science has been corrupted by funding conflicts of interest and political ideology, yet articles in Skeptical Enquirer refer to honest and sincere skeptics as "deniers". Can you explain your publication's bias in this matter?
Hilary Benn webchat 3rd March from number10.gov.uk
This is an extract from the Hilary Benn webchat at the Official site of the Prime Minister's Office, I came across this gem question from a James Goff.....pity James was unable to go back and ask Hilary Benn about an obligation to use science instead of politics when it comes to AGW. Thank you James, if this is a regular webchat then maybe some Climate Realists should take part next time.

Read the transcript

James Goff: Will you admit that the anthropogenic global warming theory is a fraudulent scam to make money and impose new laws? Climategate, Glaciergate, Africagate, Amazongate? What’s next, Defragate? The so-called science is flawed and does not stand up to scrutiny, as demonstrated time and time again. If you sincerely believe in this, then have a televised debate with Lord Monckton, Christopher Booker, Richard North or James Delingpole, I’m sure all would happily oblige.

Hilary replies: Crumbs James. I disagree. I am not a scientist but I have read what the consensus of scientific opinion is, and in the light of what they say and of the evidence it seems to me that we have an obligation to act.
