With countless trophies she got for “Black Swan”, who can say otherwise? However, apart from being a talented actress, Natalie is also known for being a passionate vegan. And after some time out of the limelight, it’s said that she is filming her own vegan documentary to kick off 2012.

The said documentary will be made out of Jonathan Safran Foer’s book “Eating Animals. The book is basically a personal record of the author’s journey to learning about what we eat. Foer himself revealed about the Oscar-winning actress’ plan to make a movie for it in a French news source last summer.

Natalie credits the book as the one that got her to become a full-fledged vegan. And according to one green site, though the said green project is still on its initial stage, Foer will eventually be helping the now a mother actress.

==========================

Word was also relayed on Wednesday that novelist Jonathan Safran Foer, whose book “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” was made into a film that’s current in theaters, revealed this summer in an interview with a French news source that Portman was planning on making a documentary out of his food manifesto, “Eating Animals.” Portman wrote in 2009 for HuffPost that reading the book turned her vegan.

Portman has her own production company, Handsomecharlie Films, which she started in 2007. She backed “Hesher,” which starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and is behind the ever-delayed “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.”

=========================

It is good to know that there are celebrities who use their money and fame for the benefit of the planet. However, celebrity or not, anybody can help the environment.

But if you are one who got not much to spend for the green works, why not just incorporate eco-friendly steps with your daily routine? For example, use green cleaning products for your everyday cleaning instead of conventional cleaners. This step may not be as grand as that of Portman’s, nonetheless, it is still a significant help to the planet.

Help build a more sustainable planet. Go for green cleaning products today.

However, reports got it that the actress is now back to eating meat. How true is it that she switched back to being a carnivore all because her of man, Mr. Will Kopelmann?

Well, it seems that there is truth behind the said report. According to ecorazz, the Charlie’s Angel star has indeed welcomed meat back to her diet. The said reason is that she’s having a hard time sticking with her vegetarian diet all by herself given that her boyfriend is all for meat.

A source also said that making a separate meal for her and her boyfriend is quite a drag for Drew. Though she tried doing it for sometime, the work just seems too challenging for her. And so to make things simpler, she decided to give up her vegan diet.

Read more about Drew Barrymore Back to Eating Meat

========================

Actress Drew Barrymore is reverting to her former wild ways — at least in terms of her diet.

The former vegan (and PETA spokesperson), who has been a vegetarian for the past decade, has now added meat back into her diet — just to please her man.

She has been dating her boyfriend, Will Kopelman, for a year, and Kopelman is apparently a “meat and potatoes” kind of guy. Although she initially tried preparing separate dishes for the two of them, she found the challenge too daunting, and has now decided to join her in her boyfriend’s meat-filled meals.

=========================

=========================

Being a vegetarian is one way to go green. And while we respect Drew’s decision to get back to eating meat, we certainly think that sticking to her vegan diet would have been a huge help to the planet.

But if like the current Drew, you are a meat-eater but still would want to help the environment, there are many other things that you can implement. Take, for example, cleaning with the use of natural cleaning products

With the products made of biodegradable ingredients, you can make your simple cleaning an eco-friendly routine. And in addition, natural cleaning products do it without giving your more financial burden.

Be a help to the planet today. Start using green cleaning products before it’s too late.

ALBANY, NY – Going Green Updates

As New York State moves forward with a proposal requiring manufacturers of household cleaners to tell consumers what chemicals are in their products, public interest groups submitted comments this week on the plan. The coalition of 42 public interest groups applauded the agency’s continuing effort, and urged the agency to specifically require companies to disclose any chemicals in their products that cause nerve damage or hormone disruption, even if industry asks to keep this information secret from consumers.

The State’s proposal came after widespread public pressure and a lawsuit brought by advocates to enforce a first-of-its-kind but long-ignored set of 1976 regulations requiring manufacturers of household cleaners to reveal the chemical ingredients in their products and any health risks they pose. The lawsuit was brought against Procter & Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive, Arm & Hammer parent company Church & Dwight, and Lysol-maker Reckitt Benckiser. All four companies, when informed by advocates about the regulations, either ignored the notification or refused to file disclosure reports with the State.

“Our new Governor has long been a champion of the public’s right-to-know. As Attorney General, his Project Sunlight offered a comprehensive database of government information for the first time in New York’s history. Now, DEC is poised to make history again by enforcing New York’s chemical disclosure requirements.” said Earthjustice attorney Deborah Goldberg, who is handling the court case against the companies. “Unfortunately, industry groups don’t seem nearly as committed to this effort. Public interest groups have followed the state’s timeline and made our comments available to all stakeholders. We’d be very happy to the same kind of behavior from the cleaning products industry.”

Public interest groups are backing a swift timetable for ingredient disclosure as well as a convenient information hub for consumers to search and compare chemical ingredients among different brands and products. The agency still has not said when the companies will be required to file this information, but has said it is committed to making this information easily accessible to consumers.

“Consumers have a right to know what is in the cleaning products that they use – just as they have come to expect from food. While companies have made some progress in ingredient disclosures, the efforts are inconsistent, spotty and don’t provide adequate safety information,” said Dr. Urvashi Rangan, Director of Technical Policy at Consumers Union, nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports. “Companies should welcome this opportunity to provide a level playing field and be able to provide consumers the information they need in a consistent and comprehensive fashion.”

Forty-two groups, representing a range of consumer, labor, health, environmental and good government groups signed on to the comments, which praised DEC staff for their steady progress.

“New Yorkers want to know what’s in the products we use in our homes every day, and the Department of Environmental Conservation understands why it’s important to share-and not hide-information about poisonous chemicals in some household cleansers. We’re glad New York State is gearing up to require cleaning product manufacturers to come clean about the toxic chemicals in their products,” said Saima Anjam of Environmental Advocates of New York.

In the document, the groups cautioned that the agency should require companies to disclose any chemicals in their products that cause nerve damage or hormone disruption, in addition to impacts that DEC listed, such as cancer or asthma – even if these chemicals are only present in small amounts.

“I’m sick and tired of standing in front of a store shelf and being utterly stymied by the lack of information I would need to make an educated choice about how to clean my home without contaminating it in the bargain,” said Kathy Curtis, mother of four and policy director for Clean New York. “Since household cleansers are products we all use, requiring disclosure of their ingredients would be a good start toward requiring full disclosure of all ingredients in all products.”
Cleaning product manufacturers are taking notice of the changing climate toward toxics in products. In response to a letter sent by the groups involved in the court case, several companies, including the California-based Sunshine Makers, Inc. (manufacturers of Simple Green products), filed reports with the State for the first time. And three weeks after the groups’ disclosure lawsuit was filed, household cleaner manufacturing giant SC Johnson announced that it would begin disclosing the chemical ingredients in its products through product labels and a website. The company is now in the midst of a high-profile national advertising campaign touting its efforts.

But other companies, including the four targeted in the lawsuit, are hiding behind an industry-backed voluntary disclosure plan, which fails to connect the dots between chemicals and health hazards and thus falls seriously short of the more complete disclosure required by New York’s regulations.

“Consumers have a right to know what’s in their cleaning products so they can have the information they need to select the safest products for use in their homes,” says Jamie Silberberger, director of programs and policy at Women’s Voices for the Earth. “The industry’s proposal falls far short of meaningful disclosure. In fact, it’s a step behind what companies like SC Johnson & Sons and Seventh Generation are already publicly disclosing.”

“The difference between the cleaning product industry’s voluntary program and the full disclosure required under New York’s law could mean the difference between triggering or preventing an asthma attack,” said Laura Haight, senior environmental associate with the New York Public Interest Research Group.

Studies show links between chemicals in common household cleaners and respiratory irritation, asthma, and allergies. Occupational exposures to some ethylene glycol ethers, often used as solvents in cleaning products, are associated with red blood cell damage, reproductive system damage, and birth defects. Some solvents in cleaning products are also toxic to the nervous system.

“Common household cleaners such as oven cleaner, glass cleaner and furniture polish contain chemicals that are linked to serious health effects,” said Sharonda Williams, Environmental Policy and Advocacy Coordinator WEACT For Environmental Justice. “The health risks are especially pronounced for low income people and people of color who shop at the 99 cent stores in their communities – often the purveyors of some of the most toxic household cleaners on the market.”

New York’s policy move could have national implications, as momentum builds here and abroad for toxic chemical reform. Congress is facing pressure to overhaul U.S. chemical policy and require the chemical industry to prove the safety of a chemical before it could be used in products. Meanwhile, states are taking the lead by implementing laws to protect their residents and leveraging limited resources by compiling information about toxic chemicals and their safer alternatives through the Interstate Chemicals Clearinghouse. Internationally, companies are preparing to comply with a similar European law (known as REACH) already taking effect.

“If companies want to sell certain products in Europe, they need to demonstrate they are safe for the intended consumer,” said Christine Brouwer, Co-Founder & Executive Director of Mira’s Movement. “We’re still a long way from that standard. But New York’s right-to-know law is a good first step. And as much as companies might wish otherwise, this law isn’t going away and neither are we.”

News: Hanes® and Planet Green Join Goodwills Donate Movement

Goodwill Industries International is pleased to announce that Hanes® Americas No. 1 Basic Apparel Brand ¹, with products in nine out of 10 U.S. households and Planet Green the television network devoted to sustainable living are the newest partners to join the Donate Movement. Hanes and Planet Green join Family Circle Magazine and Levi’s in a platform of iconic brands that support the Donate Movement, which encourages consumers to consider the positive impact their donations have on both people and the planet.

HANES AND GOODWILL
Spring cleaning kicks off early with Hanes and Goodwill® partnering to launch a Clean Out Your Drawers effort in March. Hanes recently conducted research that sheds light into the usually dark spaces of our closets and drawers. According to a national survey commissioned by Hanes, most people wear only 70 percent of the items inside their drawers. Together, Hanes and Goodwill will encourage the public to organize, donate and replenish. The program was developed in response to an overwhelmingly common occurrence of cluttered, messy drawers and offers fun and easy solutions for getting organized.

As a partner in Goodwills Donate Movement, Hanes is increasing public knowledge of what it means to donate responsibly, said Jim Gibbons, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. Together, Goodwill and Hanes are asking consumers to make a commitment in reducing their environmental impact by cleaning out their drawers and donating those items to Goodwill, where they will help to provide job services for millions of people.
Hanes is proud to partner with Goodwill® to raise awareness of the Donate Movement. We wanted to use this program to highlight the power of responsible donations and what that can mean for communities, said Sidney Falken, senior vice president, Hanes brand. Weve learned through research that many people hold on to items they no longer need but these items can actually be used again and have a second life. Thats why Hanes partnered with Goodwill to educate people about the benefits of donating items they no longer need, while making room for new updates of their favorite apparel items.

PLANET GREEN AND GOODWILL
Planet Green and Goodwill are working together to educate the public on ways they can actually make the world a better place.

Its the idea of conscious living, said Laura Michalchyshyn, president and general manager of Planet Green. As partners of the Donate Movement, we are asking viewers to consider the small ways they can help their community and the environment by giving to reputable organizations like Goodwill that turn donations into jobs.

Part of the Goodwill and Planet Green partnership includes the launch of the networks new docu-series, Dresscue Me, premiering in April featuring self-taught designer Shareen Mitchell. Owning stores on both coasts, Mitchell works with every day women on her show to turn vintage clothing finds into chic, fashion-forward frocks.

Planet Green will enable us to channel our repurpose message to millions of viewers who understand what it means to give a new purpose to existing material, continued Gibbons.

To find out what items are accepted and where to donate, locate your closest Goodwill at http://locator.goodwill.org.

About the Donate Movement
The Donate Movement is a global movement inspiring consumers and businesses to join Goodwill in promoting the positive impact donating has on people and the planet. For nearly 110 years, Goodwill has been an environmental pioneer and social innovator of the reduce, reuse, repurpose practice. Last year, Goodwill diverted more than 2 billion pounds of donated goods from landfills, and used the revenues form the collection and sale of these donated goods to fund job training programs in the communities where they were received. An industry-first, Goodwills patent-pending Donation Impact Calculator converts donations into their social impact.

Valentine’s Day tends to spark thoughts of romance, flowers and that special someone. But this year, results from a recent study may have you thinking twice about where you spend the evening.

The study, conducted by Dr. Charles Gerba, professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona, and sponsored by The Clorox Company, found that some bachelor pads may contain more than 15 times the amount of bacteria than the homes of their female counterparts. Of the surfaces tested in their apartments, coffee tables and remote controls harbored the most bacteria.

But bachelorettes aren’t off the hook – researchers also found high numbers of bacteria in their apartments. In fact, more than twice the number of bachelorette front doorknobs were contaminated with bacteria as compared to bachelor doorknobs – a fact that will have guys wondering if opening the door for their dates is really the right move.

“There’s no doubt about it: bachelors had a far bigger quantity of bacteria in their apartments – but bachelorette pads weren’t squeaky clean either,” said Dr. Gerba. “The good news is that taking just a few minutes to disinfect frequently touched surfaces as you’re tidying up for the big night might just do the trick to bring back the romance.”

A Love Affair with Germs?

Study findings could make some believe cooties really do exist:

The bedroom is already crowded. 63% of bachelors’ nightstands and 60% of bachelorettes’ nightstands tested positive for bacteria, including fecal bacteria like E. coli. Watching a romantic comedy at home may ruin the mood. Of the surfaces swabbed in bachelor pads, remote controls are the surfaces with the highest number of total bacteria.Gentlemen may want to wash their hands after opening the door for their dates. According to the study, more than twice the number of bachelorette front doorknobs were contaminated with bacteria – including fecal bacteria – as compared to bachelor doorknobs.

For single men to prepare their dates on their pads, you must buy organic cleaning products @ MyCleaningProducts right away.

About the Bachelor and Bachelorette Pad Study

The study was conducted in December 2010 by Charles P. Gerba, Ph.D., Department of Soil, Water and Environmental Science at the University of Arizona. To determine bacteria levels on frequently touched surfaces, researchers sampled approximately 100 cm2 on four surfaces (front door knob, top of night stand, remote control and coffee table) in thirty bachelorette pads and thirty bachelor pads.

Why white trash bag is commonly used in the household? Read full story…

Trash bags come in many different colors including black, clear, green, white, blue and red. Of all of the different colors garbage bags can come in, which one is the most commonly used? Believe it or not, white is the most popular color.

First of all, white trashbags are the most commonly purchased because they are the most common color in household consumer use garbage bags. For example, Glad garbage bags are commonly made and purchased in white. In addition, Hefty garbage bags are another brand that commonly come in white. These brands, such as Glad and Hefty, differentiate by making white bags for household use and green for outdoor trash can use.

Another reason why white is such a popular color is because they look neat and clean in kitchen, bathroom, or office trash cans because they match all décor and white is a clean, fresh color. The white liners hanging in various trashcans throughout the home or office do not look “industrial” like green or black trash bags do. This is an important reason why white is the most popular color in household garbage bags.

White is also more eco-friendly than the other colors, such as green, black, red, or blue. One reason for this is because white bags do not use black dyes or green or blue colors in the making of the bags. They are also more eco-friendly because without the dark color on the outside of the bag, the white garbage bags are translucent, making it easy to see how much trash is actually in the bag. So, you don’t overuse or underuse the garbage bags. In addition, with the semi-see-through white color, you can also see if a recyclable material was put in the wrong garbage can and put such items in the proper container for recycling. White garbage bags are also thinner, using less plastic in production.

White trash bags are a popular color for these reasons and more. They can be purchased online at janitorial supplies websites or at the grocery store or wherever trash bags are sold. Get some today and see for yourself why white is such a popular color!
S.C Johnsons have changed its labelling recently. For what reasons? Read full report…

The annual Public Reports of Racine’s S.C. Johnson & Son Inc. detail its good deeds.
A sample: 40% of electricity drawn from renewable energy; factory greenhouse gas emissions down nearly 32% since 2000; extensive disclosure of ingredients in home-cleaning and air-care products.

“Part of being a responsible company,” Chairman and CEO H. Fisk Johnson writes in the latest, 49-page edition, “is working hard to play our role in helping to solve the world’s environmental problems and, importantly, also helping those who buy our products make more responsible choices.”

But an ongoing, 2-year-old civil lawsuit accuses the 12,000-employee, $8 billion-a-year firm of deceiving customers with a key aspect of its “green” marketing. And recently proposed federal regulations also raise questions about the company’s eco-labeling.

At issue: the marketing of S.C. Johnson’s iconic glass cleaner, Windex, and its category-leading stain remover, Shout.

The fronts of their bottles feature prominent, green-colored labels with a leaf-and-branch graphic and the trademarked “Greenlist” insignia.

Greenlist is a rating system used to evaluate and reduce adverse environmental effects of chemical ingredients.

What the front labels don’t say is that the Greenlist insignia is conferred by S.C. Johnson itself.

That fact, or in some cases just the suggestion of it, appears far less prominently – on the back of opaque bottles and on the inside of clear bottles, visible through the Windex fluid.

Litigation pending in federal court in California and Wisconsin contends that S.C. Johnson is deceptively implying that Windex and Shout have been tested by a neutral third party and been found to be environmentally friendly.

“The Greenlist ‘seal of approval’ is nothing more than S.C. Johnson touting its own product,” say the complaints, which seek class-action status and financial damages.

The company denies its labeling is misleading.

“We are very proud of our accomplishments under the Greenlist system and we believe that we will prevail in these cases,” Christopher Beard, public affairs director, said in an e-mail.

S.C. Johnson holds a patent on Greenlist, and the system has helped the company achieve such results as eliminating nearly 48 million pounds of volatile organic compounds from its products in the last five years, Beard said.

And Greenlist in 2006 won an award from an Environmental Protection Agency program established to recognize innovative, pollution-preventing chemical technologies.

S.C. Johnson also says on its website that Greenlist was “scientifically reviewed” by the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.

Greg Schiefer, executive director of the group’s North American wing, said the society hasn’t formally reviewed Greenlist, although members of the group have heard presentations on the process at annual meetings and reviewed it in that sense. A reporter’s inquiry about the website statement prompted discussions between the society and company, Schiefer said.

“I think they’re going to modify that text, to be honest,” he said. S.C. Johnson is among about 15 companies belonging to the society’s “Global Partners” program, which the group’s website describes as “the premier level of SETAC support.”

But whether or not Greenlist is a good process – Schiefer joins the American Chemical Society and the EPA in praising it – there’s a question about how S.C. Johnson discloses its connection to Greenlist.

That’s a key issue in the litigation, and it could be a further issue for the company if revised regulations proposed in October by the Federal Trade Commission take effect.

Prompted by the increasing trend toward “green marketing,” the agency says the revisions would strengthen its guidance to help companies avoid misleading environmental claims.

Among other things, the proposed regulations say it’s deceptive for a product to imply it has been endorsed or certified by an independent third party.

To help illustrate that, the FTC describes a hypothetical paint manufacturer whose advertising features a “GreenLogo” seal and the statement “GreenLogo for Environmental Excellence.” For List of Green Products, you can visit MyCleaningProducts

Such an ad would likely imply that an independent third party awarded the seal, the FTC says.

If the paint manufacturer itself created the GreenLogo seal and didn’t accompany it with “clear and prominent” language saying so, it would be deceptive, according to the proposed regulations.

Asked whether the Greenlist labeling complies with the revisions, Beard said S.C. Johnson has followed the current rules and will “welcome any guidance” the recent proposal provides.

The firm may need it – at least judging by the comments of three law professors who teach advertising law.

“Things like Greenlist were clearly on the FTC’s mind” when it proposed its new rules, said Rebecca Tushnet, a Georgetown University law professor. “In fact, Greenlist is a classic example of one of the practices they were concerned about.”

Under the proposed regulations, the Greenlist labeling probably would be considered deceptive, Tushnet said.

“Honestly, I wouldn’t expect Greenlist (labeling) to survive all that long, at least not in the form it is,” she said.

Rutgers law professor Ellen Goodman – who specified that she isn’t following the S.C. Johnson litigation – said in an e-mail that she didn’t think the company’s labeling provided “a clear and conspicuous disclaimer such that the reasonable consumer would understand that there was no 3rd-party endorsement.”

Mark Bartholomew, a law professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo, said via e-mail that he doubted S.C. Johnson’s labels would survive federal review under the proposed regulations.

“I think the FTC will be skeptical about consumers actually studying language that can only be read through the liquid contents of the bottle, especially where the initial “Greenlist” term is featured prominently on the front,” he said.

Within the last year, S.C. Johnson began using new wording on its back-of-the-bottle labels.

The original language the company used – and cites in legal briefs – reads, “Greenlist is a rating system that promotes the use of environmentally responsible ingredients,” followed by smaller type saying, “For additional information, visit www.scjohnson.com or MyCleaningProducts”

The back side of some bottles now says, “Greenlist: Our patented process to select raw materials with reduced environmental impact while maintaining high performance.”

The change in wording, which is being phased in, comes well after the lawsuits were filed but is unrelated to the litigation, Beard said. He said S.C. Johnson makes changes as it learns more through talking with customers.

Green Companies as well as anyone who markets Green Products must abide to the rules and regulations of labelling in order to give costumers full satisfaction and guarantee organic ingredients. As a consumer, everyone are entitled to have the correct information being presented into the labels of each product. One thing for sure, MyCleaningProducts, which sells organic cleaning producs is absolutely a way to live green.

Change starts within yourself. Lately, a school carpenter was designated to be the new recycling program coordiator due to his effort in finding sustainable ways. Read full story…

The new “Greening the Campus” project is picking up speed as a student uses the recycle bin on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011. The recycle bin has a side for trash and recyclables.

Despite budget cuts, Facilities Management is making sustainability a high priority.

Facilities Management hasn’t had a recycling program coordinator since 2008 due to a lack of funds.

Various supervisors managed the position’s responsibilities internally, but they have filled it now because, according to Director of Facilities Management Chris Kopach, “we think it’s extremely important. Sustainability continues to be a large item on campus.”

David Munro worked as a carpenter in Facilities Management for three and a half years before being hired as the recycling program coordinator. Munro has a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from the UA.

Munro is known by his coworkers as “Mr. Green” for his efforts to find ways to reuse materials as a carpenter.

He was inspired to go green because his seven-year-old son was learning about environmental practices in school. Around the same time, he was asked to look at a way to save excess drywall from going to waste. After that project, he just kept looking at ways to save.

“Tucson and the University of Arizona are really dear to my heart,” Munro said. “This is a really great place to live.”

He and his wife picked Tucson out of a book when they looking for a place for him to go to school and were attracted by the bountiful sunshine.

“To me, it’s one of the most beautiful campuses in the country,” Munro said. “I really believe that. I feel really connected to this place and the university. So I think it gives me that sort of added incentive to really do well by this university because I think it’s kind of paying back in a way.”

Kopach said he believes filling the position will bring back an educational component to Facilities Management which has been missing since the last recycling program coordinator’s departure. He said he envisions education entailing continuing to partner with Residence Life, educating building managers on how to best use buildings and bringing awareness to the campus community about recycling.

Munro sees “reduce, reuse, recycle” as a hierarchy with reducing being the most important. Also using green cleaning products is an advantage for eco-friendly cleaning practice in schools.

“We have one planet, we have one country,” Munro said. “When you throw something away, there is no ‘away’ there. There’s magic other place where something just kind of goes.”

For students, Munro hopes they will pause before consuming something and think, “where is that waste going to go … maybe they’ll think twice and maybe they’ll do something differently.”

In addition to the new hire, Facilities Management is on its way to becoming Green Clean Certified, not something most universities can boast, according to Kopach.

JohnsonDiversey will be coming out at the end of February to certify the switch to green cleaning products as well as items like plastic liners and paper towels.

“It’s (sustainability’s) really a cultural change … people are really starting to think about it,” Munro said, “and I’m excited about the future.”

A good leader and leadership may change students perception and habits as they grow. Your home is your child’s training ground; start using best green cleaning products, so your children would do the same.
A washing machine is a household equipment to clean dirty clothes and leave them smelling fresh afterwards. And while not really far from happening, it is ironic to think that washing machines can also become smelly. These unpleasant, musty smells emitted by washing machines can be a result of laundry detergents and fabric softeners being clogged inside the washer. Fungus begins to accumulate over time once these chemicals start building up in the dark small openings of the washing machine. Hence, you will likewise begin to experience the nauseating stench.

How do you then remove the washing machine smell? Here are some helpful tips to get rid of the musty washing machine smell for good:

One good odor removal is putting white vinegar in the container. Putting one cup of white vinegar into the washing machine is definitely an inexpensive method to clean your washing machine. Another alternative would be using bleach. Your washing machine will come out smell-free is you add a cupful of bleach to your detergent.

If you are in doubt about using these home remedies, you may want to try using a cleanser to get rid of the washing machine smell. You can try Lysol cleanser, or maybe an oxi-clean cleanser or even a specialized smelly washer cleanser to do the job. These types of cleaners are specifically formulated to get rid of the odors effectively because they have powerful chemicals that remove the grime and unwanted fungus growing inside your washer.

Still, another good way of removing the washing machine smells is to mix some borax with your laundry detergent. The mixture will serve as a fungicide that will remove the unwanted odor. You need to remember, however, that the try remains opened after the wash to allow the moisture to dissipate.

Lastly, if you’re the type of person who’s really into chemistry and who loves experimenting with chemicals, you can try cleaning your smelly washing machine by using a sodium carbonate decahydrate. In layman’s term, these soda crystals will be an effective degreaser as well as removal agent for getting rid of the smell in the washing machine. A small cup of soda crystals will be sufficient to have the smelly odor say goodbye for good!
