2023 Recap of events!

Since I don't have much time to blog anymore, I decided to visit this page and put my recap of what happened in 2023. Again, I got busy with work and I would rather rest on my days off.

The most important thing that happened this year is when my Green card approved. Yes, I'm already a permanent resident of the United States of America! I'm very happy and grateful for another milestone here in US.

Second would be quitting my first job and work at the competitor lab in town. It was the best decision I've made. Actually I'm now PRN at St. Luke's (the first one). I had every other weekend arrangement with them but it may change once I get fully trained at Mercy. Having two jobs helped me a lot as I earn more every month. Also, working with Mercy allowed me to expand my career growth as I'm now starting my training in Microbiology section. I've never been trained to reading plates so this is a new learning experience to me. Plus, my new coworkers are awesome too.

Third is when I finally bought a car. His name is Remy, a 2017 Jeep Renegade. I decided to buy a car because my new job is 15 minutes drive away from the house. I'm very happy that I got Remy in a lower price. In November, I finally paid him in full. I'm debt free!

If you think it's all roses and rainbows last year, it was not. Last March, my father was rushed to the hospital. His gallstones got bigger! A procedure was done right away to lessen the condition. With the grace of God, he recovered.

Last year, Matt, Ruby and I traveled to places like Winnepeg, Arkansas, Florida, and Bahamas. It was my first time to get into a cruise ship on my birthday too. We went to Minnesota thrice last 2023.

With new kababayans (countrymen) who arrived this year, I've met new new people too.

All in all, 2023 was good to me. As the new year starts, I hope that I can still survive no matter what life throws at me but I'm looking forward to another memorable events and learning events! Bring it on!

How I met Matt Hoffmann (My afam Love Story :-D)

Who would have thought I would find love in this foreign land?

I always find myself an unattractive type because I’m boyish. My neighbors thought I’m a tomboy because of the way I act and I found myself weird wearing girly clothes. Ever since, I’ve never been into a relationship just because they said I’m intimidating and I don’t blame them for saying that because I think I am.

When I was in the Philippines, nobody courted me. I know it sounds petty but it's true. I thought I would be single forever so I thought what if I'll give it a try? I was 27, 3 years before I pass the dates in the calendar so I think it’s time to come out of the shell and mingle with guys so I tried dating sites. True, you’ll find dozens of men to chat with but unfortunately I don’t see a spark in them. I feel empty still. But you can never tell when love hits you. I guess love just finds its way.

Here’s my story about how I met Matt..

I was already working in the United States. At that time, I was still a trainee in the lab so I had weekends off. I would never forget the date: March 6, 2021, Saturday around 10PM.

Since it’s my day off, I decided to have a movie marathon. I was watching A Star Is Born starring Lady Gaga on Netflix. I was already halfway when there’s notification in my Facebook dating app.

I tried several dating apps like Tinder, Bumble and Hinge but I don’t like them because you need subscriptions. For me, it doesn’t worth it most especially when you just meet a bunch of pervs and cat fishers. Sorry, just basing from my experience. I had no idea that Facebook has this dating side until I saw an ad and decided to give it a try.

Back to the story, a notification popped up saying somebody liked my profile. At this time, I was already talking to some guys regularly but I’m still open to meeting more people. When I checked the guy’s profile I found out that he’s a reporter based from his pic of a camera with a microphone in his hand. He’s 2 years younger than me too (I don't chat with younger guys than me).

With that, I found him interesting. I haven’t chatted somebody from media before. I appreciated him that at least he liked my profile. Minutes after the notification came, he sent a message and that message stood up from the rest.

It was not the typical ‘Hi, how are you?’ kind but he was asking about my interest.

He was asking what kind of music do I want?

With that, he already took my attention. I tried to play with it when I answered I like 80s songs and OPM (original Pilipino music).

He was cool with it and he asked me my favorite song! That’s the time I sent my first song to him and that was ‘When I met you’ by APO Hiking Society.

He also sent his first song called Cool Anymore by Jordan Davis. During that time, I don’t like country music but because of him he made me love the genre.

That night changed my life, I enjoyed exchanging messages as I kept asking about his job and I can feel he loves to answer too! We talked till 2AM until I decided it’s time to rest.

The next morning (Sunday), I wasn’t expecting much from this guy until he texted me again. We were getting to know more of each other.

His name is Matt Hoffmann, 24, and a reporter in NewsPressNow in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Days passed and we exchanged messages everyday, day and night checking to one another. I lost interest to the other guys so I stopped talking to them. What I love talking to Matt is that he’s fun and smart. We have meaningful conversations every day and he takes into detail what I say. In addition to that, we do exciting things like sending snapchats to which I don’t use before and exchanging songs before we sleep.

I always think of what songs to send him. Most of them are love songs. Every day our connection grows and my feelings toward him developed. Ayeee. I feel incomplete when I don't text him.

We spent two months of talking until we decided to meet in person. We decided to watch an indoor football in Omaha.

When I saw him in person, he is tall and he smelled good. Throughout the drive, he held my hand. Our first restaurant was at Texas Roadhouse. That was my first time watching an indoor football game too. I enjoyed his company until the night came and he drove me back to the apartment.

Before I got out of the car, he kissed me. A short but sweet kiss. At that moment, I really feel butterflies inside my stomach. I said

And the rest is history. It's now year 2024 and we're living together. Moving with him is best decision I've made. Throughout the months of living with him, I know him more deeply. Our relationship made it even better when we had our precious fur baby, Ruby! We have traveled to many places. I found out that Matt is so loving and caring to us.

Although we're not married yet but I can see forever with him. My parents really like him as well which I'm very thankful for.

I shared my many firsts with Matt. With him, I feel secure and motivated. He's like my guy bestfriend that I can share my dreams and goals in life.

Because of this, I thank God for sending Matt for me. He's a keeper and I pray that I get to spend more precious moments ad adventures with Him until my last day♥

Checklist to reach your American Dream

1. Obtain a hospital experience.
An experience of at least 1 year is alright. It doesn't matter if you're a generalist (rotated in different sections in the lab) or a specialist as long as you get exposure in a hospital setting. American employers need to know if you have performed complex tests and can operate machines.

2. Take certification exams like ASCP or AMT
As for me, I took the ASCP since most of my workmates took the same but I think taking ASCP is more advantageous as it is recognized internationally. It is accepted by countries that has their own certifying exams like middle east. Meaning, you need not to take HAAD if you already passed ASCP.

3. Take English proficiency exams
It can be IELTS or TOEFL. The purpose of taking these exams is not just to gauge your english fluency and comprehension but it is a prerequisite to get VisaScreen. To pass IELTS, the target band score is at least 7.0 with speaking score of 7.0 and above. This is the passing score to get qualified for USA.

4. Have your Transcript of Records evaluated
You can choose either Josef Silny and Associates or WES. They will evaluate your college transcripts and see of the curriculum matches that of an American MT curriculum.

4. Process your VisaScreen
VisaScreen is a certificate that recognizes that you are eligible to work as a healthcare professional. It took me 3 months to process all of it before they FedExed my certificate.

After that you may now start your search of an employer thru browsing the internet or asking assistance from an agent.

CPD UNITS TO RENEW MY LICENSE

Last January 2019, I was able to renew my medical technologist license even though I didn’t meet the required 45 CPD units of 3 years. I only got 27 points. I just took the opportunity to avail the waiver before this privilege is abolished.

Before I booked an appointment, I secured my certificates first. PRC has reiterated that each seminar should have an accreditation number and its corresponding units. But do you know how much each of the seminars cost me?

· Hematology training – 3000Php worth 10 CPD units

· Blood Bank training – 2500php worth 6 CPD units

· Parasitology training – 3000php worth of 11 CPD units

Imagine, I spent 8500 pesos for these seminars and I still owe them 18 points! Huhu.

I could have presented my drug analyst training certificate but since it doesn’t have CPD units, I just kept it.

HOW TO RENEW YOUR LICENSE?

Obviously, you need to renew your license before the expiration date. Since we have to do online appointment, it is advisable to book your schedule months before the expiration date. In there, you choose your preferred date and don’t forget to take note of your registration code.

When the appointment date comes, bring your certificates and go to PRC office early. Pay the renewal amount

For me, the CPD is just another burden for medical technologists in the Philippines. This should be abolished as soon as possible. Who in their right minds would require CPD units, when each seminars cost an arm and a leg and our salary is not enough to sustain us at the end of month? I mean, come to think of it!

Suppressed feelings

Hi! How are you doing? The feelings will just stay to where it should be. Don't worry. Although I was not able to tell you what I really felt before I went away but I guess it's better to keep it that way. I'm afraid that if you'll soon find out, I will lose the friendship between us then I'll go back to being a stranger. I'm not the risky type. I'm not the person who is vocal to my feelings. It will just be awkward to both of us if I confess, I'm pretty sure of that.

But you know what, I am so happy you shared that little part of yours. I appreciate you giving your spare time listening to what I like. Your simple hi or hello makes my day. I didn't think of falling for you but it just happened. Whenever I think of you, it makes me smile and wonder when exactly this feelings started.

I guess this is goodbye. I'm glad you became one of my inspiration. It's better to let these words left unspoken. After all, I'm used to this one-sided feeling. It's time to let go. It's better to admire you silently without you knowing. One day, I'm gonna look back at this moment and laugh. With another guy to crush on. Maybe in the afterlife, we'll meet someday. Who knows? Thank you for the memories. Till then.

Phlebotomist Version 2.0

So much has happened for the past two months of being away from my blog and I must say, it's hectic. I have so much in mind but for the sake of keeping this blog short, I will just put in here the most important ones.

Well, I never thought I would be back in phlebotomy since I applied as a tech in this hospital. For 2 months, I am working as a phlebotomist to help out the short-staffed department.

Unlike in the Philippines where we use warding trays, this time, we are using CARTS. Although the carts are heavier but it's got everything I need like blood culture bottles and bigger spaces for trash and sharps containers. It's paperless as well as it has a laptop where we can see the list of patients that needs to be drawn and indicates what tubes to use for that certain tests.

What's more is that we have this walkie talkie named Vocera which we use as our mode of communication between my phleb mates and nurses. It has cool features like it can locate your workmate, broadcast among the group, and call a nurse when you need help in getting the blood from the patients central line (PICC line).

Right now, we are assigned in overnights and had to clean up or finish two floors before our shift ends. After the shift, we rush to the kitchen to eat breakfast and rest for the whole day.

There are two of us drawing blood from patients and there are times when we're stuck in the Emergency Room because of the STATS and Time-sensitive draws.

Because of the increasing cases of COVID-19, we need to protect ourselves by changing PPEs to each and every rooms we draw which a little bit of a hassle and time-consuming but it's for the safety of everybody.

Rapid Response, Sepsis and STEMI alerts and especially Code Blues make me nervous.

A memorable vacation in Dumaguete and Siquijor (before lockdown)

Last March 6-9 2019, I had an awesome adventure with my fellow momshies: Carine, Maymay, Luma, and Abby together with Jolie, Sir Carl and Sir Louie in the island of Negros Oriental. At least, I ticked off some of my dream destinations before I leave the Philippines!

At first, I was so sorry I turned down their invitation due to personal reasons, but when I realized this is an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed, I told them to count me in and prepared myself for the trip.

GOING TO DUMAGUETE, THE CITY OF GENTLE PEOPLE

I’m from Alegria, Cebu and I’ve heard so many positive feedbacks about Dumaguete City.

This is our Dumaguete Itinerary:

· 11 PM – 6 AM We went to Cebu South Bus terminal and waited for the 11PM Ceres bus going to Bato Port (via Oslob) to get us in a RORO, a vehicle vessel ship. It was a long ride that took us approximately 5 hours to arrive at Dumaguete bus terminal. We had rented a car for the eight of us with Lumarie as our driver of the day.

· 6 AM – 7 AM Bag drop off at the Pethouse

We dropped our bags at the Pethouse, which I must say a very wonderful bed and breakfast accommodation. It was homey and the owner was hospitable. Needless to say, they have an adorable dog named Blue who greeted us with a happy bark. We ate our cup noodles for breakfast and I took a refreshing morning shower before we started our first destination.

Dumaguete is not a big city so we just explored it in just a day.

· 10 AM – 10:45 AM Smokey Mountain, Valencia, Negros

Unfortunately, the weather was unfavorable due to a low pressure area but it didn’t stop us from going to our first destination. It was lucky that Carine brought her bluetooth microphone for us to sing-along during the road trip. Before we reached the place, we stopped by a convenience store for coffee. Truly, as we went to Smokey Mountain, there was a NATURAL TOXIC GAS sign. The gloomy weather was a good thing since the geothermal vents produced more sulfuric smoke on dark. Even though it was drizzling, we still took group pictures and carefully climbed the top of the yellow barrier. One thing that should keep in mind is that it is a landslide prone area so extra precaution should be observed.

· 10:45 AM – 12:00 PM The forest Camp

This tropical resort is fascinating! So many greens around! Being a nature lover, I was enraptured by its scenic beauty. A paradise! I love how the place was developed and we got awesome pictures at some of the locations of the resort. I love the lush rainforest and the cauldron shaped pools. There was a hanging wooden bridge too! I would like to thank Maymay for her exceptional photography skills! With her, we had awesome pics.

· 12:00 PM -1:00 PM Lunch in a carinderia near Tejero resort.

We kept on reminding ourselves that we are on a tight budget so for now, we decided to stop by a carinderia. We ordered their homecooked meals and asked ‘Ate’ to cook corned beef and scrambled eggs. We had a satisfying lunch at a cheaper price.

· 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM Pulangbato falls.

Too bad some of my comrades were tired of trekking to Casaroro falls so we just decided to take a quick visit to the soothing waterfall of Pulangbato and true to its name, the rocks are rustic because of the sulfur.

· 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM Red Rock Sulfur Hot Spring

At first, I was bothered to take a dip in to the yellowish and cloudy water but as I watched other tourists enjoying, I gave it a try. The bath was so relaxing and I thought that the warm sulfur water is good for the skin. It relieved my back pain.

· 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM Tierra Alta Resort

We made a side trip to this Santorini-inspired mountainside clubhouse. It is a perfect venue for social gatherings and pre-nup pictorials. The pavilion in its clean whites and royal blues speak of the Greek vibe. There is a lighthouse offering an aerial view of the luscious greens of Valencia highlands. With our matchy Polo shirts, we had a good time taking group pictures.

· 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM Gabby’s bistro

We wrapped the day trip with a sumptuous feast. Gabby’s is a European themed restaurant and the vintage ambiance added to the beauty. I was impressed to each of the menus for it has its own stories. They are known for their baby back ribs. When we were waiting for our orders, we spent taking pictures . I was able to taste all my colleague’s dishes. They were very delectable.

· 8:00 PM – 8:30 PM Sans Rival Bakery

Before we bought our tickets going to Cebu, we stopped by Sans Rival Bakery, the famous bakery in Dumaguete and bought our pasalubongs to our loved ones. I bought Silvanas. These are frozen buttercream cookies that are covered with crumbs. This is the signature delicacy of Dumaguete

· 8:30 PM – 9:00 PM Rizal Boulevard

Just near the port, we passed by the Rizal Boulevard at night and saw the oldest American university, the Silliman University. I marvelled the stretch of bright lampposts giving a vibrant atmosphere to chill and hangout with friends. As we were on our way to buy tickets going to Siquijor, I witnessed the beautiful sunrise at the heart of the city.

· 9:00 PM onwards Shower and rest

We were not satisfied with our bath from Red Rock so we showered once again to make sure we’re clean before going to bed. We drawed lots as to who’s gonna be bedmates. I and my ‘fierce’ mentor Sir Carl got the same number. Hahaha. We got the chance to chat with Thea in Missouri.

GOING TO SIQUIJOR, THE ISLA DEL FUEGO OF THE PHILIPPINES

Linked as a mysterious island of witchcraft and exorcism but for me, Siquijor is paradise. A remote island blessed with natural resources such as white sand beaches, waterfalls with luscious greenery, and iconic landmarks. We headed our way to Siquijor a day after. The moment we landed to the port, I already knew that there’s more to discover in Siquijor!

· 7:00 AM – 8:45 AM Ferry boat ride from Dumaguete to Siquijor

It took 1 hour and 45 minutes on a ferry to reach the island of Siquijor and this time, we had rented a jeep with a driver. Luma can now enjoy the coastal tour.

· 8:45 AM – 10:00 AM Larena Triad Restaurant and Coffee Shop

It was a good way to start our Siquijor escapade. Kuya driver suggested that we take our late breakfast at this restaurant. We arrived at Larena Triad at around 10 AM and we ordered foods from their menu. While waiting to be served, we enjoyed the vast expanse of Siquijor as well as the vantage view of the islands of Cebu and Bohol. The relaxing ambiance and spectacular view deck of the restaurant was marvellous. The foods were superb! We relished in a hearty brunch of their Sisig and Pansit. We had the chance to call Divina in Australia while we’re eating too.

· 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM Paliton Beach, San Juan, Siquijor

It took us 30 minutes to get into this hidden paradise. This postcard perfect white sand beach is lined with palm trees. I changed my outfit to have an awesome pic. You need not to worry if you don’t have someone to take pics of you because there are locals who will do it for you but for a fee of course. They would even teach you how to pose! I enjoyed swinging on the tree swing tied to a palm tree as Kuya took a picture of me.

· 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM Old Enchanted Balete Tree

The mystical tree surrounded with vines is said to be 400 years old, making it look more enchanted. But the catch is this, there’s a small pool at the base of the Balete tree for a foot spa. I found it enjoyable as I dipped my feet into the pool and fishes started to eat the dead skin off my feet! It tickled me. I sat still so the fishes nibbled my skin. We bought ice candy to beat the humidity and I chose the vanilla flavor.

· 2:00 PM – 2:30 PM Hapitanan

Since Siquijor is known for witchcraft and dark magic. We didn’t miss the opportunity to stop by Hapitanan and take a photo of us flying with a broomstick! The movie Harry Potter came into the picture. The volunteer’s photographic skills are commendable, we got awesome photos of flying to the sky! I also had the chance to have a photo op of their garden with the stunning overlooking view as my background.

· 2:30 PM – 3:00 PM San Isidro Labrador Parish, Siquijor

It is also known as the Lazi Church. This century-old Baroque church is well maintained and surely stood the test of time. Its architecture is compelling, showing how prestigious it was during the Spanish colonial era. When we went there, there was a pre-nup session.

· 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM Cambuhagay Falls

The place is most-visited by foreign tourists and I must say that this is the most epic waterfalls ever! During our visit, the tourists enjoyed cliff jumping. It is a 3-tiered cascading aquamarine waterfall where flowing rock pools and swimming holes are located. They have bamboo rafts and this improvised rope swing called the ‘tarzan swing’ in which I took the courage to try it, not just once, but thrice! Good thing, there were locals ready to assist us from the moment we swung till we splashed our way to the water. I unleashed the dare-devil in me as it was my first time to jump that 10 feet high! I even dared myself to jump a level higher but unfortunately as kuya let go of me, I couldn’t grip the swing handle anymore resulting to an epic fail jump. My chest hurt but I decided to give another try to make use of this exciting moment.

· 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM Salagdoong beach

Sir Lou dared to jump that 35 feet high cliff. I and the rest of the group remained watching. I am not a swimmer and I thought that jumping in Cambuhagay falls was enough of an experience.

· 6:30 PM onwards Glamping at Aquamare Beach Camp Resort

This was our last destination to unwind from the whole day’s fun adventure. The inside of the dome-shaped teepee style tents are very functional. It features a cozy atmosphere! The tents are air-conditioned with appliances such as television and water heater plus free wifi connection. The bathrooms had clean towels and toiletries. It could accommodate more than four people since it was spacious.

We enjoyed plunging the pool as we played message relay. As we ate our dinner, we were serenaded by the band and had a good time. Jolie and the rest were so insistent that I sing before the session ends so I just gave in and sang one of my favorite jamming songs, Para sa akin by Sitti Navarro. You know what, I felt great after the performance. There I realized that somehow, there are still people who come to appreciate my talent. I love how supportive they are to me.

Of course, we had ‘Tagay sessions’ once again and Carine opened some topics for us to discuss. The night grew and as usual, I was still sane. The vodka didn’t knock me off as I still managed to go back to our tent, woke my sleeping roommates, and dozed off.

We spent our remaining time in Aquamare before checkout by plunging the pool and pictorials. We checked out at 12 noon.

On our way to Cebu…

As we embarked in a barge and the bus going to Cebu City, we were dead tired. I slept in the bus and so was my seatmate, Sir Carl.

After a long ride, we arrived at the Cebu South Bus Terminal. Carine and Abby were night shiftees so they have to catch the time.

That was the last time I saw my colleagues as each of us parted ways. Well, that was the end of my CebuDoc journey and I’m really thankful for the company of momshies and some of my colleagues there.

Also, I was very thankful that we were able to go back home before the lockdown. I couldn’t imagine if we were stuck there with the little budget that we have.

One thing that I must add in this trip is that I find the locals in both towns friendly and accommodating. We were so unfortunate that we were able to witness how beautiful these places before the lockdown. This has been one of the memorable travels so far. If a given a chance, I would like to visit Dumaguete and Siquijor again with my family in the future.

My first days in America

The moment we landed at Sioux Gateway Airport, I was nervous. At last, I'm gonna meet our HR who we have constant communication with. Her name is Amy. When we saw her outside, we were not so sure if that was her but when we approached her, it was confirmed. My nervousness faded away as she greeted us warmly and helped to load our bags at the back of her car. When she drove us going to the hospital (coz this is where we'll spend our quarantine) I should say she's a very outgoing person. She was delighted to show us the places around Sioux City.

Upon arriving, we went to the Levitt Guesthouse located at the 4th floor of the hospital. She showed us our room and I saw a set of scrubs and a T-shirt placed on the table. She was so welcoming as she said that we call her if we need anything.

While staying in the hospital's guesthouse, I couldn't ask for more: a wonderful accommodation (because of the suite room) with free meals, TV, and unlimited WiFi connection.

As the days passed, here are the things I've observed and I'm still very amused:

Speaking of free meals, sumptuous meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) are delivered at 8am, 12noon, and 6pm. Honestly, the big portions are hard to finish for my small tummy. and more and more I miss rice.
Since we are under quarantine, we monitor our temperatures and it's not in Celsius but in Fahrenheit. From morning, mid-day to night. They are not into metric system here.
We looked for apartments and I took the courage to call each one of them. I'm thankful the receptionists that I talked to were kind and considerate because there are times I couldn't get my English right.
I found the nights here weird because it doesn't get dark until 9PM, way much different from the Philippines where we take our dinner at 7PM because it's dark already.
It is our first time to use the thermostat to adjust the airconditioner's temperature and we were terrified to hear some cracking sounds from the ceiling. At first, we were worried and because of this, we phoned a friend just to make sure if it's alright.
I found the hot baths refreshing!
If you want to cross the street, you need to press the button so the pedestrian lane is free for you to cross
We went to a nearby convenience store, HyVee and I was glad that I already have 20, 50 bills and coins as change
In Walmart, we were introduced to the self-check out feature of the store. We used a credit card for that.
A box of milk is always present on meal times and we have lots of it inside our fridge
I'm starting to like pepper because it gives more flavor to the food.

I know there are lots of things that I need to discover in America but this is all for now. I have more to learn.

Until now, it is still new to me to use Messenger as one way to communicate with my family. I still wish I could fly back home and be with them. Whenever I speak to them online, I want to hug them. I miss them so much I was just holding back my tears.

Usually they are the ones who call me because I can accept it immediately. Adjustments to time has to be made because we are in different timezones already. I'm awake in US while it's nighttime in the Philippines.We usually talk in the morning and in the afternoon before I sleep. Well, I could talk for hours with them about everything under the sun but the most important is, we keep on reminding each other to pray and take care of ourselves. My heart is glad when I see my family smiling as we exchange jokes. My family still laughs at my corny jokes, one thing that I miss the most.

I think I need to get used to messenger now. With technology, communication is made convenient. My homesickness was lessened. I get to see them and talk to them in real time and the difference is only distance. I can't wait till I finish my contract and rush home.

Weird night times in America

JUST SHARING - I just find it weird that the sun sets longer in America than in the Philippines. On my first day in US, I was just shocked to find out that there's still sun at 7 PM! I remember that in the Philippines, 7 PM is already dark and people already gathered in their homes to eat supper. Honestly, this is one of the reasons why I still can't adjust my body clock. Usually the sun sets in America by 9 PM and starts to get dark at 10PM. So strange! When I was in the Philippines, I am asleep by 10 PM but now my bedtime is 12 in the midnight. What I need to improve is my bedtime schedule. I hope I could adapt here immediately..

Although, there was a delay in my US employment but it didn't make me feel disappointed and instead I put my firm trust to God that everything's gonna be alright. Because of the COVID outbreak I also understand the company's concern to halt the deployment since it's also risky to put our lives in danger. Much more the number of cases are still up and there's no vaccine yet as of this writing. During the lockdown period, I spent my time doing the things that I love and enjoying the remaining my time with my family. I believe that everything has a reason.

Well, the primary formula of my timeline is patience. I learned to be patient because I need to work for my family. God is my provider. I also took part time for reliever jobs to augment for my certification exams. I realized that nothing's good with rushing things because it will just produce bad outcomes.

I hope that this blog will inspire you to never stop dreaming! Keep working on your dreams and put your strong faith in God. He is a good companion. He will never leave you in the process. Believe in yourself as well!

A DREAM THAT COMES WITH A COST

Everything God is preparing for you is worth the wait.

Finally my dream has started to realize. July 1, when I found out that our employer had already rebooked our ticket, mixed emotions felt. A feeling of happiness and at the same time anxiety took over. When I told my family that I already had a flight scheduled, my mother was grateful and she told me to get hurry in complying the travel requirements.

Although Papa was not feeling well but I can feel the immense support he has given me as he drove me to the places I needed to go just for my medical certificate and travel pass. I should say that getting these travel documents were a hassle because of the retained ECQ status in Cebu City.

As I look at my itinerary, I couldn't help feeling nervous. Five flights were not a joke, The Cebu-Manila-Incheon-San Francisco-Chicago-Sioux City route was bothersome but I need to survive them all. Although it was very hard to leave my family but I needed to do it in order to support my sister's education.

It was Sunday, 1 o'clock in the afternoon. I was finalizing the things in my luggage. Then came the painful moment that I need to go. As I hugged my crying Mum, I couldn't hold back my tears. I let the tears flowed down on my cheeks. It will be long until I can smell her fragrant smell again. I hugged Kenneth and Cherry as well. I was really emotional and I immediately went inside the car for I couldn't take the bitter reality of leaving home. Leaving home was painstaking but it is about time.

During the travel to the airport, I was so silent to father. I don't know what else to say although I know Pup was also holding back his emotions. We arrived at the airport and unloaded my baggage from the back. How I wanted to hug him but he seemed to be in a haste. He was making the quick drop off an excuse. The last time I remembered was I gave a kiss on his cheek and he drove away after that.

Now I know that there's no turning back anymore and I went on pushing my cart loaded with my baggage inside the airport.

To someone who has never flown overseas, to me, this is a new experience. This is a new adventure to unravel.

Our first stop was Manila and our flight to Korea was on the next day so we spent a night at Gatchalian Guesthouse which was a comfortable stay. The guesthouse served us a delicious beef tapa for breakfast.

I just kept myself strong and kept on praying to God for a safe flight every time the plane takes off. Honestly, I was feeling dizzy during those flights and there were times that the delicious food that flight attendants were serving lost its appeal.

I thank God that Maymay was my traveling buddy. She knows everything and for that, I am very proud of her! With all the connecting flights and boarding gates that we need to catch, I just couldn't imagine myself walking around the big airports of Incheon and asking airport authorities for directions. She's so impressive. I was thankful she was so patient to me because as I said, this is my first international flight.

Flying with Asiana Airlines was very satisfying. Honestly, I was so anxious with our 12-hour flight from South Korea to San Francisco. At this time, I was dizzy. Good thing there were few passengers so we had the chance to have have the whole row by ourselves so we can lie to sleep. The lights were turned off so I had a wonderful rest.

July 6, 2020, when I landed the American soil. I couldn't hide the excitement and I cried in silence as I thought that what was once a dream came into reality. As the plane landed, I said to myself that this is it! It is time to live with my dream! Suddenly I got homesick remembering my family but then they are the reason why I'm working hard to reach my goal.

I was able to witness two of the biggest airports in the United States: the San Francisco International Airport and Chicago O'Hare International Airport. These airports have different architectural designs but I like the latter because it is easier to navigate. While we were spending our layovers, I also fed my eyes with the amazing view of the airports: lots of signature stores and I wish that someday I'm gonna buy some of the designer items for myself.

Right now, it's still unbelievable how this small girl was blessed with a wonderful opportunity. Imagine, I have flown all the way from the Philippines to Sioux City! I thank God countless times for my answered prayers. He is my refuge and my strength. To him, I cling to His promises. I can feel his love for me. He has guided me in everything that I do and provided things that I need and even more. Even though I'm million miles away from my family but my faith is firm. Distance doesn't matter. Technology has made distance a thing of the past as I am constantly checking them everyday.

Having said that, being an OFW is not always 'the good times'. Each one has to undergo hardships. Not only you have to fight homesickness but also the possibility of discrimination against other races. That's why I am fervently praying that I can easily adapt in here and will make friends with the people.

Indeed, this is a dream that comes with a cost. Still, I need to work for it. I hope I will achieve success in the land of the free.

i AM MULAN

Ever since I was a kid, I always admired the Disney movie, Mulan. Although she is not a princess, she is my favorite Disney heroine because she is a brave and selfless daughter.

I remember the time my father bought it for us and he played it in our VHS player for the first time. Since then, I want to be like her because I love her courage to prove herself that she is strong like a man.

Mulan is more focused on what she could do for the family. She's independent and courageous. She did what is best and that is to keep her father safe and to give honor for her family.

The greatest gift and honor is having you for a daughter.

This line melted my heart. What a moving scene, it hits me hard. I cried a bucketful of tears when Mulan's father hugged her in the ending. The love for our family will always be greater. That's why I love Mulan.

Like her, I took the courage to be away from the family leaving from my comfort zone to further help in sustaining the needs of our family. While being away from home, I always think of them.. I'm literally crying here. and I can't wait to go home, hug my parents and dine with my family once again.

God’s reason for my delay

Aside from this COVID-19 crisis, God has a reason why he delayed my flight to the United States. Instead of getting impatient, I even thank him for he let me spend most of my time doing the things that I’ll definitely miss like spending time with my family and awakening my talents. But aside from that, through this delay, I got to know God better.

Each and everyday, my need to follow His footsteps grows. As I wake up early, I find the stillness of the morning my avenue to thank God for another wonderful day and to praise him for the awesome creations he gave for us. The freshness of the wind and twitting of the birds are music to my ears as I feel his mighty presence and imagining that I am talking with him in the paradise. The inspirational books in our shelf serve as my fuel to strengthen my faith.

Because of this delay, I found my purpose and existence in life. I turned away from my wrongdoings and followed God’s teachings by reading the Good News in the bible daily. I watched Bro. Eli Soriano’s bible expositions. My family made a strong connection to God by reciting the rosary in the evening, calling Mama Mary to relay our petition to God for world peace and the discovery of cure to this virus. This is a beautiful conversion for us to be closer to God and put him as our center of our family.

God is truly amazing! Days turned into weeks and I didn’t seem to mind the day of lifting of the quarantine.

Thank you, Lord Almighty Father for the delay. I’m savoring the time I left before I leave home. I will definitely miss my father’s homecooked meals, meaningful conversations with mother and the fun times I had with my siblings. I come to appreciate that no matter how financially challenged we are, I am blessed with a family who share the same passion and interest as mine and that is to get to know You.

Thank you, God for giving me the chance to improve myself. This is just the beginning. You opened my heart and soul and you made me realize that your love is eternal. You are always there when we are persecuted and suffered greatly.

I hope that as I live in this temporary life, I will propagate your goodness and will strengthen my faith when times are not in favor of me. You are my salvation. You are the God of wonders!

Staying positive during the lockdown

With the problems this viral crisis brought us like financial insecurity, losing jobs, and uncertainties with prolonged lockdowns, we can’t deny the fact that some people are now experiencing depression and this is something to be dealt with as soon as possible.

So in order for us not to feel miserable too, I thought of several ways to keep us physically, emotionally and spritually healthy. This is in connection to the previous blog I’ve posted but this is to put emphasis on how we keep ourselves positive amidst the depression. Through these activities, we didn’t feel bored as we wait for the lifting of the community quarantine.

Here are the activities we do during the quarantine:

1. Meditation

- At 5 o’clock in the morning, I, together with Cherry, Shiralee and Kenneth wake up to meditate. We welcome the another extension of our lives by sitting together in my room closing our eyes, feeling God’s presence and keeping positive vibes as we breathe in hope and expel out the negativities. The stillness of the morning calms my senses. We do this for 30 minutes and I feel so much refreshed and renewed after the session.

2. Exercise

- Right after meditation, we do exercise. Thanks to Roberta’s Gym on Youtube! We start by warming up our bodies and we proceed to the exercise proper where there are daily exercises for cardio, endurance, and strength. We focused on firming our glutes and removing our belly flab. At first, it was hard to execute some moves but as days passed, I got used to it. The challenging exercises for me are the squats, 50-80 jumping jacks, star jumps, mountain climbing, and 1-minute plank. I also do hula hooping and cycling in the afternoon. With Cherry and the group, my motivation to lose weight grows stronger because I need to join them or else I will be marked ‘X’ for not participating. It’s really great to see the members of the family exercising together to be healthy. The family that sweats together stays fit forever.

3. Diet

- In the morning, I and Cherry only eat oats with boiled egg. I try to limit my rice intake. I do this to boost my metabolism. With my father’s garden, I thank God for giving us green leafy vegetables to eat such as malunggay and alugbati. We have a balanced diet as we alternate eating pork, chicken and fish. I make sure to drink plenty of water as well. I’ve seen improvements to my skin. My face doesn’t have pimples anymore and my complexion even fairer. There are so many benefits to eating healthy foods as I have regular bowel movement.

4. Bible and Worship Songs

- As I start doing the household chores, I listen to joyful worship songs. This makes me reminded everyday of God’s love. I always tune in to Hillsong and MCGI worship songs. I feel alive and happy to sing wonderful praises to God. Before going to bed, I make sure to read the daily gospel and talk to God to the things that happened during the day. I treasure my alone moments with God.

5. Bonding time with my family

As much as possible, we stay away from the social media. I always enjoy meaningful and fun conversations with my family. My Mum and my sister Cherry are the jokers of the family. I and Pup exchange our opinions about current events. We tease Kenneth sometimes. We asked Shiralee about her love life. Through this, we were able to share our knowledge from the reference books that we’ve read and reflections from the bible.

I hope that as we start to adapt the NEW NORMAL, we may still continue to do the productive things we have done during the quarantine. Honestly, I didn’t feel worried each passing day as these activities helped me to forget my problems. Instead, I look forward each day thinking how I will please God. This gives me a positive outlook in life. This has been the conversion that I am looking for and I’m going to continue to be fit, positive and calm to keep myself intact. This too shall pass.

Home Service MedTech at your service!

My mini homeservice kit

In the laboratory, we offer home service. Yes, a patient can have his/her blood drawn in the comforts of their home. That means they could get a phlebotomist to do the venipuncture and shall be the ones to deliver the samples to the lab.

My first home service was memorable. At that time, I was assigned in the Clinical Microscopy and medtechs assigned in this section will be the ‘first call’ if there is any home service available. At around 10 in the morning, while I was processing urine samples, the lab encoder informed me that there would be a home service and I should prepare the phlebo kit since the driver was waiting.

After knowing the request, nervousness hit upon me and several questions popped out like, What if the patient is hard-stick? With fragile or collapsible veins? What happens if I can’t get a blood sample?

I always blame myself for being so pessimistic but I need to do this to keep my pride. Since this was my first time being a home service medtech, I decided to bring an intern as my assistant. As I prepared the kit, the driver was indeed waiting for us so after I made sure that my provisions are complete, we went with the driver to the parking lot.

Whoa, at first, I really felt uneasiness within as we were on our way to the patient’s house. Good thing the driver was talkative as I asked him questions about the patient. He said that ‘Sir’ is nice and there is nothing to worry about. They used to have an on-call medtech before (a former colleague) when that medtech decided to work abroad so they don’t have a choice but to get another one.

The patient lives at an exclusive villa and as we were near the place, I could say that he’s extravagantly rich as the gates automatically opened and the landscape of the house was breathtaking. I and my intern thought it was like a retreat house. Their house was so peaceful, the twits of the birds and the freshness of the wind welcomed us.

Panic started to crept when we were led by the caretaker inside. The patient was already there and I told myself that I will get the blood as soon as possible. I greeted ‘Sir’ and I figured he’s a nice man already in his 70s. I looked at his lab request, it was Executive Panel C. That would be 3 EDTA tubes, 3 Red Tops and 1 ESR. As I asked him to stretch his arms, what a big relief I had in my body as the man’s median vein was palpable! Thank God!

I decided to use Evacuated Tube System and I successfully filled the tubes. My intern helped in assembling the supplies and after I filled the last tube, removed the needle from the vein and applied pressure, the patient didn’t complain. I put the labels into its respective tubes and the patient gave me the homeservice fee or the professional fee. I just put it inside my pocket first and thanked him. I told him that all the results will be released in the afternoon.

Never did I expect that the man was gallant, when we finally returned to the lab, I realized he gave me a double of the suggested homeservice fee! I was thankful and gave the intern her share. I vividly recalled I treated myself a mouthwatering ‘sisig’ for lunch. Yum!

That marked the start of being the family’s medtech of a prominent business owner here in Cebu. I also had the chance to get the blood sample of his wife then time came when they recommended me to another generous family. The driver told me they were satisfied of my service. Since then, they always call me for monthly lab tests or when they feel ill and the doctor requests for CBC. I feel so loved by them and so are the drivers, they were ready to fetch me even from my home when need of blood extraction arises. I always receive a warm welcome from them.

As I spent my days in Clinical Microscopy, I found homeservices enjoyable. It was not only challenging as a phlebotomist but through this, it saved me financially when I’m almost running out of money. Honestly, I was able to earn extra thru this. Although it’s inevitable to come across patients with difficult veins but butterfly is always on the rescue. Also, you couldn’t help to face strict patients or inquisitive family members when you have to try on the other vein since you are in their abode. Confidence is the key here! I always keep myself calm to each homeservice and I make sure that I return to the lab with the patient’s sample.

Well, I’m gonna miss home service. I wonder if my new hospital offers this. My prayers to the families I’ve serviced for almost 2 years. Thank you so much, Ma’am and Sir. It’s a pleasure to work with you.

My Comforting Songs

There are times when I just couldn't understand what's happening in my life. So for me to escape my problems, I resort to listening songs that lift my soul up. When listening to each music and its lyrics, I feel it's as if God is talking to me. He reassures me that he's always there in good times and bad times no matter what.

My life is a mess. Tough times really made me feel like I'm alone and I wonder if I could go on. Sometimes, I find myself crying in the middle of the song. Truly, music is my medicine. Without these meaningful songs, I wouldn't overcome depression, the darkest period of my life when I always thought of the negativities in the world.

When I feel down, I quickly open my playlist. Although these songs are old but they never fail to encourage me. It's really true that you'll get to understand the meaning of the lyrics when you're sad. I thank God for the singers, who delivered these beautiful songs to enliven the weakening spirit of mine.

Aside from my Hillsong worship songs, these are what I call my 'comforter songs' because I can feel God's presence comforting me when I'm in the verge of surrendering.

- A well known OPM that never gets old. To an introvert like me, Papa Jesus is my bestfriend, my confidante to all my problems. I just felt relieved listening to this song. Rey Valera's relaxing voice adds the emotion of sincerity.

- Following the path to God has never been easy. We have to undergo hardships and struggles. Each passing day, I want to follow God. I want him to lead my life.

- The first time I hear this song was from an invocation. The song is soothing. It makes you feel God's wonderful creations and be thankful of His amazing grace. This is a constant reminder that we should feel him.

My Quarantine Diaries

Binge reading my favorite author's books

My days during the quarantine period have been very productive.

We never say we are bored staying in the house since there are lots of things to be done in the first place. It’s like every single day, we need to accomplish goals and I found myself planning what to do for the next day. Set aside tiktok and netflix for a while, here are the things that kept me busy:

1. Household Chores

· Having a two-story house isn’t easy to clean. With seven spacious bedrooms (dusting and rearranging furnitures and organizing stuffs) it’s impossible to finish all of it in one day. Also, it is not nature of our parents to just sit on the couch the whole day since they are always up to something, most of it cleaning. So as their children, we take initiatives to help. I need extra hand to get it done so I always ask my siblings to help me with the activities. These take the whole morning until lunchtime comes.

· We take turns in washing the dishes as well. One has to sweep and mop the floor and another has to wipe the dishes before we watch TV.

· As for the laundry, I and my sister do it every other day.

2. Reading books

· Being a bookworm, I made sure I allocate time for reading. I do this in the afternoon. I challenged myself to read as many books as I can. I’m more focused on books bought from Big Bad Wolf since I was impulsive in buying it last year. I just thought that this is the right time to make use of them. As of this writing, I am starting to read Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

3. Awakening my musical interests

· I started tuning my guitar and doing song covers once again as my stress reliever. There’s always music whenever we wash our clothes too to take away boredom.

· I completed my unfinished song compositions

· I saw improvements in finding my vocal range. I want to be an opera singer!

4. Rosary

· Improving our spiritual life is essential. With the cases of COVID-19 rising, we seek intervention of our heavenly father with intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary to help us win this battle. We do this in the evening, when we’re done washing the dishes. I thank God that the whole family is participative where aside from reciting the rosary, we also offer our heartfelt petitions for humanity and for the whole world.

5. Relax

· Every once in a while we tend to rest and relax. Since I’m out of work, an eight hours of sleep is what I really deserve. With so much hatred and negativities in social media, I tend to cut down my internet usage and instead, I spend time with my family by watching movies or sharing jokes with them.

· Of course, I use Tiktok once in a while. I also watch Youtube and Netflix videos if I have enough mobile data. Of course, I’m reviving my blog site as well by writing drafts.

At the end of the day, I realized that things are worth it. Maybe this outbreak is an avenue to keep families closer together but again, I hope this pandemic will end soon and everything will be back to normal. After all, I still hope we can go to malls and enjoy outdoor activities before I fly to the US. I hope your quarantine days are as enjoyable as mine. Keep safe and stay indoors!

At first, I thought that the whole process was hilarious since I’m not from a well-off family. So I worked hard by taking part time jobs to earn the fees.

No matter what happens, hold on to your dream! You’re now up for visa sponsorship! Be patient and ask God’s guidance that someday you will get to the Land of the Free. Kaya mo yan!

Ways to apply as a medical technologist in the USA

While I was still working on my documents, I already started looking for jobs in the US. At that time, I was really determined to look for some ways to pass my resume. I thought seeking employment abroad is easy when there were times I felt like giving up because I see no positive responses. But you know what, what kept me going on submitting my application is to help my family.

Of 3 years working in the hospital, here are some of the ways that I tried in hopes I could get a job offer abroad. Who knows one of these options might work for you so don’t be afraid to try. Your bright future awaits you!

1. Thru referral

- Good for you if you know of someone who is already working in the US, maybe a relative or a friend. You might ask him or her if there is any job vacancy in the company that she’s working and if you’re lucky enough, submit your application right away. You might put the person in your character references. This will be an advantage since you let the recruiter know of someone working in there. In my case, I don't have a relative who could petition me and even though I have friends who are already working in there, they are not yet confident in referring other medtechs since they're still new in the company and they come from an agency so I undertand them.

2. Obtaining international experience first by working in other country

- I’ve heard that some American companies prefer medtechs who already have international working experience. I thought of applying to Middle East countries like Dubai, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi since they require few documents. By working there, this would be my stepping stone to America but unfortunately I received no responses from them.

3. Seeking help from agencies

- There are pros and cons in seeking help from these agencies. There are agencies that even though you’re not yet complete with your documents, they are ready to assist you, but once you complete your requirements you still have to undergo visa lottery. Lucky for you if you’ll be picked first try but if not, you will have to apply again for the next fiscal year. Also, there are agencies that only considers your application if you’re already complete with the requirements. You need not to worry for visa lottery anymore since they will look for CAP-exempt employers. The company will be the ones to sponsor your working visa. Although sounds promising but the agency’s service costs an arm and a leg. I am so sorry I didn’t have that sum of money so I remained in their waiting list.

4. Sending applications online

- My last resort. Although I thought that the chance of getting my resume noticed by employers is low, I still gave it a try. Nothing to lose. God only knows how many online applications I submitted to various websites for 3 years. What I did is that I listed all the hospitals in each state and started filling out application forms in their careers portal and uploaded pertinent documents that could support my eligibility to practice my profession. Even though I get discouraged because I kept on receiving numerous rejection letters but I still kept on sending resumes. Also, I polished and revised my resume from time to time. Honestly, I was interviewed by three employers but unfortunately some of them declined because they couldn’t sponsor foreigners for a working visa. Until September 2019 came and a certain recruiter emailed me. He told me that the company is willing to sponsor visa since they are in utmost need of medical technologists and asked me when’s the best time for me to have the interview. After reading the email, I was glad and replied immediately that I’m ready to have the interview at the soonest time at their convenience. Fast forward, the interview went smoothly and 2 weeks after, the recruiter told me that I’m already hired and gave me the offer letter to sign. At that time, I cried for joy and so I thanked them and that started our H-1B working visa petition.

I thank God for giving me this opportunity. I’m so blessed. I don’t have that large sum of money to pay the agency but he was generous. Truly, if you will just be patient then it will be given to you in the right time. When I think that the future is bleak, I always turn to God for consolation. I always hold on to his promises and always put my family as my driving force.

My advice to you is to never give up. Try what works best for you.

Platelet apheresis donor experience

Blood bank medtech and blood donor at the same time.

I didn’t expect to be an apheresis donor until June 2018 came and a patient desperately needed an aphe donor to replete his very low platelet count. The patient’s blood type was A positive and I happened to have the same blood type as his. They looked for donors but to no avail. Because of the urgency and the family was already crying and desperate, as a medtech, I felt the urge to help so I decided to give it a try and willingly offered to donate my platelets.

SCREENING BEFORE THE APHERESIS PROCEDURE

The platelet apheresis procedure costs a lot of money. The apheresis kit is expensive. In our hospital, the apheresis price is 25000 pesos so everything has to be made sure starting from the screening of donor up to the processing of the platelet concentrate.

I had my colleague who is the apheresis operator to check my veins. Since I’m a whole blood donor already (I was able to donate whole blood twice in our blood bank), she said that my veins qualified for the procedure. First, I filled out the screening form and submitted to interview right away. When I passed the interview, they took my pulse rate, temperature and blood pressure. Luckily, my vitals were okay then they extracted a blood sample for screening.

The donor’s blood sample is used to:

· confirm my blood type

· check my hematocrit

· screen for malaria

· screen for Hep B, Anti-HCV, HIV (PCR-based)

· see if my platelet count meets the requirement of at least 200,000 (I remembered my platelet count was 342,000)

After I passed all the screening, I needed to do fasting first. It should be at least 4 hours. When the time has come, my colleague (the operator) set up the Haemonetics apheresis machine. I was glad to observe how it was done since I’m a blood bank staff too. Who knows, I could be an apheresis operator someday? Haha. While waiting, I took a tablet of Caltrate plus and drank Chuckie, a chocolate milk drink. Fresh milk will do if Chuckie is not available. It is really recommended to drink it prior donation since this will replace the Calcium lost during the donation. That’s why we remind the patient’s significant other (S.O.) to buy 2 tablets of Caltrate and 2 chuckie or fresh milk after the donor passed the screening.

All was set. I sat on the comfy phlebo chair and relaxed. I conditioned myself that this will be the same as whole blood donation. After my colleague cleaned my arm, she inserted the 16-gauge needle to my vein. So glad the pain was bearable and the drawing of blood started.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

The apheresis procedure consists of cycles. The number of cycles depends on the donor’s platelet count. A higher platelet count means fewer cycles and few cycles entail faster time of donation. The donor’s hematocrit could be a factor on the number of cycles as well. Each cycle has two stages: the drawing and returning of blood. It is really recommended that the donor should be oriented first about the whole procedure and to raise any concerns if there is uneasiness felt during donation. Take note that the machine processes the blood. The platelets are only harvested in here and the red cells are being returned inside the body.

During my first aphe donation, I had 6 cycles. I didn’t feel anything on the drawing of blood part but there was this cold sensation by the time the machine returned the blood into my body. In returning stage, the blood is mixed with the anticoagulant ACD (Acid Citrate Dextrose) to prevent blood from clotting. It was as if I could feel the ACD penetrated into my knees and I felt a little bit nauseous but it was manageable.

I never felt bored as the television was turned on. What I was worried about every cycle was my vein. What if it collapses in the middle of the procedure? While I was squeezing the pumping ball during the drawing stage, I couldn’t help to think of collapsing vein and needle dislodge but my colleague was considerate, she adjusted the pressure to around 85.

I kept on praying that the procedure would be successful when the returning of the 6^th cycle came and the machine beeped that the process is done. It was a relief when my colleague took the needle out and I applied pressure to the puntured site. The whole procedure took 2 hours.

AFTER CARE

Since I lost a considerable amount of platelets, I needed to replenish it as well. I would like to thank another co-worker for recommending Mott’s apple juice for me to drink after the donation. In one week, my platelet count went back to 300,000. I also drink milk before bedtime to replace the Calcium lost.

COMPARISON

Being a platelet apheresis donor is okay as compared to being a whole blood donor. I didn’t feel anything after the procedure! For the first time, I saw my precious platelets ready to extend another person’s life. The bag of platelets was transfused to the patient right after and when there was considerable increase of the patient’s platelet count, the family returned to the blood bank to see me. What a joy to see the patient’s mother smiling as she thanked me for helping her son.

After that successful procedure, I felt the need to help more people and decided to include myself in the roster of donors. Since then, my platelets have helped several patients with dengue, cancer, and those who undergo coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Over time, I got used to apheresis procedure. I prefer the drawing stage, honestly.

Donating platelets is fulfilling. When families contact me for help, I’m always ready to have my blood screened provided that I’m in good health also. Who would have thought, I could be an apheresis donor. I don’t have much money in my pocket but I’m so thankful to God for giving me such an opportunity to help my brothers and sisters in need through my platelets.

Ang Dating Daan and Bro. Eli Soriano

I’m a proud Roman Catholic but my faith in God was strengthened with the help of this one-of-a-kind preacher, Bro. Eli Soriano.

For me, Bro. Eli is a blessing God sent to us. He is the true evangelist of this generation. Even though he comes from another religion, the Members Church of God International (MCGI), but he earned my respect. I've learned so much from his bible exposition program, Ang Dating Daan at UNTV Channel 10. Many people from different religious sects ask him about their confusions of the bible and His answers are always based in the bible. His explanation is crystal clear!

Bro. Eli is full of wisdom. He is so familiar with the scriptures. Not only was I able to understand the context of each bible verse he points out but he is also shares his knowledge on science and history. Although he is praised by his impressive knowledge about the bible but he remains humble and attributed his talent to God. I also admire him for being so brave in protecting the teachings of the bible. He isn’t afraid to attack pastors and to correct the wrong doctrines taught by other religions.

He answered my confusions regarding other religion’s beliefs about:

· God the father and God the son, Jesus

· Tithes

· Eating pork

· Statue of saints

· Purgatory

· Reincarnation

· Sign of the cross

After hearing his explanation about these, I was guilty since I do the sign of the cross and believe in the Saints. I was taught the Roman Catholic doctrine since I was a kid. Although, there were differences about belief but I think what matters most is that Bro. Eli always emphasizes that God the father is a loving God and that He sent His son, Jesus Christ to save us from our sins. He always reminds us to love your fellowmen and follow the will of God.

You may call me weird but it is never weird to seek the truth most especially when it talks about God. During this quarantine period, I prefer to watch his bible studies and expositions over anything else. He gives sensible advices to those who ask him about hardships that we encounter. Every day, I read the gospel. Also, I listen to MCGI worship songs every morning as I found them uplifting and make a good start to my day. Each day, I feel God is always with us.

How I wish to see him in person. I don’t care what other religions say about Bro. Eli because I know God will protect him. I hope God will give Bro. Eli long life to inspire and enlighten other people’s minds to read the bible for their salvation. We may not know the Day of Judgment but at least we are prepared by doing God’s commandments as we continue to live in this complicated world full of sin.

I recommend everyone to watch Ang Dating Daan in UNTV Channel 10 or in Youtube. We never know, Bro. Eli could answer that question boggling in your mind for so long.

Resume of a medical technologist

To get noticed by employers most especially when you apply abroad, you need to have a presentable resume. Not too flashy and long, but just enough for employers to get to know about your work experience as a medical technologist.

Note that recruiters won't take much of their time reading your resume so it must be SHORT BUT CONCISE, 2-3 pages would suffice.

Here are some tips on what to put in to your resume:

1. HEADER
The header should contain your complete name with your professional titles (RMT, MLS(ASCPi), MSMT, MPH), followed by your current address below and the most important, your EMAIL ADDRESS and CONTACT NUMBER.

Remember: Your contact details should be active. This is a MUST since this is where your potential employer might contact you for an interview. Make sure to have your phone with you at all times.
Also, have a formal email address. An email ad of your name would be better for the employer to recognize easily.

2. CAREER PROFILE
What is this?
A career profile is a summary of your resume. Your strengths and advantages

Example:
• A medical technologist with 3 years experience as a generalist in a tertiary hospital.
• Skilled in Phlebotomy both in pediatric and geriatric patients....

3. PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
This is the part where you put all your relevant work experiences (just related to Med Tech) with your job position, duration, and your responsibilities)

For fresh graduates, simply put the affiliated centers where you practiced as an intern.

4. EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
No need to include your primary and secondary education. Instead, indicate the school and degree that you graduated from college. In my case, I have a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology at Southwestern University. I also put the date of graduation, that was May 2015. If your pursue a Master's degree, include it in here as well.

5. SEMINARS and TRAININGS
- Indicate the title of the certificates you have received. It could be a Basic Training of the machines that you have in your lab or the CPD seminars that you attended. This will tell the employer that you are fulfilling the continuing education for medical technologists.

6. MACHINES HANDLED
- Good thing to add in your resume for the employers to have an idea if you already have knowledge on the machines that they have. It is an advantage if you have the same brand as theirs. Make sure that you can operate the machines not just for the sake of putting it to make your resume look promising.

7. CHARACTER REFERENCES
- It could be the pathologist, chief medical technologist or the section head in the laboratory where you're working. If the employer wants to know your job performance, they are the right people to consult with. Also, it could be a former colleague that is already working in the United States. At least they will have an idea that you know of someone working in the US. Limit your references up to three people and inform them firsthand before you put their phone number and email address.

How about Bio Data (birthday, Age, Gender, Height)? Will these matter?
Answer: Nope. Not needed.
Many of you might wonder where to put this portion in your resume but the truth is, it doesn't matter. What matters most is your experience. This will just eat up space in your resume. Anyway if they want to know about your personal information, they can ask you from the interview.

All in all, be honest. Polish your resume every now and then. If you lie in your resume and when the employer knows about it, this will jeopardize the opportunity. You might lose your job. Be yourself

To the breadwinner of the family since she got her first job at the age of 20. A friend to all and a very supportive mother of 3 kids. If she had not decided to get married at 32 years old, God knows where would we be in this world.

I saw this newsletter published on January 1984. This was secretly kept in a brown envelope so that means she doesn't want anyone to see this (her short hair perhaps?). The article really says about her, hardworking and independent. That's why she definitely deserves a post in my feed.

The article says:
With her petite build Nelita "Nellie" Abriol of toiletry production division looks more like a teener than a 24-year-old woman. Nellie considers her four years with IPI as time well spent. She finished her secretarial course at Abellana National School while working fulltime.

Like other self supporting students, Nellie had her own share of difficulties but her guiding ideal of "striving consistently to reach success" helped her out.

Nellie who is the eldest in the Abriol brood turns to gardening when she's not with friends or reading her favorite magazines. She's quite conservative in her taste for music preferring classical and mellow tunes.

Remembering my Flores de mayo days

Since it’s the month of May where kids are supposed to join the yearly Flores de Mayo, I will share wIth you the time when I joined this exciting activity for kids.

Flores de Mayo is a catechism class for kids in the Philippines. It happens every month of May where kids are spending summer vacation from school. This is where catechists teach children religion about Papa Jesus, Mama Mary and the Saints.

I was only five years old when my grandmother told me to join Flores de Mayo. This was my very first time to hear about the word and I really loved the idea of going to the chapel and picking flowers from our garden to offer it to Mama Mary.

At that time I really wanted to join Flores de Mayo, but the chapel where Flores de Mayo is held was far away from home so my mother wouldn’t let me and so I just listened to the accounts of my friends. They said they have learned so much from Flores de Mayo. They were provided school supplies during the culmination.

In my heart, there was that longing of joining and wonder. How I wished that the chapel is just near to us but God is so amazing! He heard my prayer. I heard that a convent, just meters away from our house called The Adoration Chapel of the Holy Face of Jesus would also be having a Flores de Mayo for the kids in our area!

I was already ten years old but I just want to experience the fun it brought to other kids as they come to learn about God so I didn’t miss the first day. That afternoon, I, together with my younger sister walked all the way to the convent.

On the first day, we were asked to introduce ourselves and expressed our expectations for the Flores de Mayo.

In there, I felt the acceptance and the presence of the Lord. I was never absent as I kept on looking forward to the activities.

Through Flores de Mayo, I learned to use the bible. The catechists gave us this homework where we were to identify the twelve apostles and since I didn’t have a computer at home and my mother couldn’t remember the twelve of them, I used the bible as my reference.

This was also where I learned to use the rosary, memorized the mysteries, and recited the prayers. There were times when I’m assigned to be the leader of the rosary.

I remember holding one of the letters of the AVE MARIA and beside me were two angel kids with their ‘feathers’ as we put it into the altar after every mystery.

I realized that the nuns are friendly. We sang and danced religious hymns. We played games and that’s where I made friends with other kids too.

We never forget to bring our bowls because after the rosary, there’s a feeding program. Foods like lugaw, binignit, and champorado were served to each one of us so we went home with a happy belly.

It was sad that the month of May ended and so is this catechism class. During the culmination, It was even fun when I was chosen as one of the Reynas in our sagala parade. They allowed us to wear the colorful dresses. I wore a light blue dress. I can’t remember which of the Reynas I was during the sagala. We also presented an interpretative dance in front of the parents who were our audience. I remember I was given a special award. I also received my own rosary, it was white in color.

Flores de mayo built the foundation of my faith in God. I really miss it. Spending vacation time learning about Jesus is exciting. I hope that this will be practiced by the children of today. This will definitely encourage the younger ones to follow Jesus as they travel this journey called LIFE.
