KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Nov. 11 (CIDANews.com) — One of the deadliest weapons used by militants in Afghanistan is ammonium nitrate fertilizer bombs. These bombs are being used to attack NATO and United States forces.

Ten semi-trailer loads of ammonium nitrate, enough to make thousands of bombs, and weighing nearly half a million pounds, was found in Kandahar during a recent raid.

Col. Mark Lee, leader of NATO’s anti-bombing campaign, told the Times: “You can turn a bag of ammonium nitrate into a bomb in a matter of hours – this is the first step.”

It is believed that much of the ammonium nitrate-based fertilizer is imported from Pakistan because the chemical is illegal in Afghanistan.

The U.S. and NATO raid in Kandahar was based on intelligence information in an effort to keep the Taliban from obtaining chemical fertilizer.

There are events in history that define life changing moments. They change the way we look at our world and they change the way we look at ourselves. It is in these “landmarks in history” that we also define time. They become the markers of the past and the crossroads for the future.

These events in time mark an end (like an era) and a beginning. And they make us ask questions like:

Do you remember when… ?

Where were you when… ?

What were you doing when… ?

What did you do before… ?

What did you do after… ?

Did it change your life… ?

One of those events human history that we remember in our time is the “fall of the Berlin Wall”. The following excerpt comes from a story written by Dorothea Grass. She was eleven years old when the wall came down. Her story tells of a family of courage, fear, anger and joy.

[Translation: Their father fled out of the DDR, now the family has to follow: why our Author missed the fall of the wall." Sueddeutsche Zeitung

"My personal wall came down the day after

In the May of 1988 my father went to West Germany on a visa for a short term visit. He never returned. Shortly after, my mother started filing papers to initiate the process for family re-unification. Much later my mother explained that this had been their plan all along. But as children we were told that she hadn't known he would not return, simply so we would not accidentally tell anything to the 'Stasi” (secret police) and thus jeopardize the whole process, and all family members involved.

After that nothing ever remained the same. In our sleepy little town in Thuringia we had become those who “are going to leave”, enemies of the state, and were no longer part of the 'normal' world. For us as schoolchildren it meant were no longer allowed to participate in school functions. I learned that being at the same place at the same time does not mean people experience the same things. We had started living in a different world, a parallel universe to that of the “conformed citizen”. Men in gray overcoats randomly came to search our house and dig through our drawers, our telephone line had ominous clicking noises, and all of that to prove there had been a conspiracy to leave the country all along.

Not that we were not used to being different. My family was part of a church, and we were raised with Christian values. My grandfather had managed to keep his private company when all property was being made common good in the 50ties. We had lots of relatives in the west part of the country. Each of these facts alone was more than enough to raise suspicions.

In school everybody who went to a church had to be registered: there were five out of 25. If we didn't know God didn't exist, and Christmas is only a dusty old winter tradition? we were asked. All the other kids stared at us. We knew in our hearts we would never be able to be “model citizens” and believed even as children we would someday leave.

On November 8, 1989, after much waiting, a year and a half after my father had left, we were told that “someday” would be tomorrow. We were to go to bed early and rise early in order to pick up our papers. How many times had I dreamed to see my father through binoculars standing on the opposite side of the hill, beyond “no man's land” and the border line. But using binoculars we never would have dared. In the weeks prior we had been told to move out of our apartment in expectation of an imminent departure. My mother's parents graciously had offered to let us stay with them during this time. Meanwhile emotions ran high in the country all around us.

So when Schabowski proclaimed on the eve of November 9 that the wall had come down, the TV in my grandparents house had long been turned off. We slept right through one of the most monumental moments of German history. The next day my uncle told us: “The wall is open!”. We were hopeful and expectant all at the same time. We hurried down to the police station to pick up our papers, only to be caught in throngs of people heading the same way. “Where have they all come from?”, I remember wondering. They had never shown any interest in leaving before. I was getting angry. All our waiting, the undignified searches, all our hopes and fears – it did not seem fair that they did not have to go through the same pain as we had.

Yet, after we had collected all paperwork and made it across the border – when I saw my father standing in a parking lot on the “other side”, I didn't even wait for the car to stop. I jumped out while we were still driving and ran into his arms with tears streaming down my face.

I am glad, of course, that there is no more “DDR”. I am elated to see how much change human courage can achieve. Yet – on that 10th day of November, all I really cared about was that our family finally was happily united."

Identity theft update – Facebook users

It looks like an email from Facebook to you – but is it really? Recently, I received this email from what looked like – Facebook. As you can see in the graphic below – the email looks official, it offers what seems to be viable information and it targets a persons concerns for security.

Phishing Facebook - Protecting Your Identity

All a person has to do is click on the update button or the “here” link (where the little hand is pointing) and it is suppose to take you to the Facebook login page so you can verify and update your login information to make sure it is secure.

DO NOT CLICK THAT BUTTON!

“Phishing” Emails

This email has all the tell-tale signs of a “phishing email” designed to steal your login information and possibly your identity. But before I go into what makes this email a phishing email – I will explain “what is phishing”.

Phishing is when a scammer creates a login, or an email that tries to replicate a popular web site. You may have seen similar email scams coming from Paypal, MySpace, UPS, Western Union, EBay, etc… .

They try to use the same colors, the same style, even the same font in the email. It gives the quick impression that it is official and hopefully it lulls the recipient into a false sense of security right away.

The email tries to address the user of the account (not always successfully) – to make it personal and friendly – as if they know you – again, adding to that false sense of security.

There is usually some sort of security problem or update, or server update or a warning of even a possible phishing scam where you need to take immediate action to verify your user information right now. This creates a sense of anxiety in the hopes of overriding your sense of caution – thus creating an impulse click effect.

They offer a big click here button or update now button to make it simple for you to just login real quick and enter your personal data.

Once on the login page – it is also designed to look like the web site they are trying to chameleon.

How can you tell if it is a phoney “phishing email scam”?

First of all, you should always be suspicious of emails requesting you to login and update your accounts coming from any social site like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, etc… The same goes true for (and especially) banks, Ebay, Paypal and many others. NEVER take the email at face value.

Second, if you look closely at the photo above you will see that it did not get the owner of the account correct. Facebook does know who you are and they wouldn’t send out a generic email to some “random user” asking them to update their security settings. If for some reason Facebook needed you to update your login information they would tell you to open a clean browser and then type in http://facebook.com and then go to their security update page.

Now here is the third and biggest clue. When you open your email program, if you roll over the embedded email link without clicking on it, it will show you the actual web address near the bottom of the program. I use Thunderbird and it always gives me a visual of where the link wants to send me. If it doesn’t match Facebook.com – it is a phoney address.

It is easy to check these things before you make a big mistake and lose your login information to some scammers email. Most emails only take a couple of extra seconds to check and the time it takes is well worth the headache and problems of having your identity stolen.

The last thing to remember is that many times, these email scammers will find legitimate information and then try to make chameleon web sites using real information like the “Dram Litigation Scam” based on the real Dram Litigation lawsuit filed in 2006. The email links that were embedded in the email did not take you to the Dram Litigation web site.

British Airways will be offering a four-day introductory sale for its Club World, World Traveller Plus and World Traveller cabins. Between Oct. 26 and Oct. 29 you will be able to purchase roundtrip fares to London starting at $276 for World T raveller, $936 for World Traveller Plus and $3136 for Club World.

Also, five European cities have been common rated from Las Vegas with roundtrip fares to Paris, Milan, Rome, Madrid and Athens all the same at $358 in the World Traveller (economy) cabin.

What makes Club World so special? Aside from other amenities – the Club World cabin offers seats that convert to 180-degree flat beds.

“Despite the global recession, Las Vegas represents new business and growth opportunities for British Airways as we continue our commitment to invest in our customers. This means a new US-UK route as well as our continued embodiment of the new Club World in all our longhaul aircraft and the multi-million dollar investment in Heathrow’s Terminal 5.” — British Airways

So if you are wanting to fly direct from London to Las Vegas or vice-versa, British Airways may be the best way to go – unless you like that 8 hour layover in Chicago.

A Look Inside Windows 7

A week has gone by since the release of Windows 7 and the comments and reviews are starting to come in. As always – some love it, some hate it. InternetNews.com writes: “Windows 7’s first big weekend went smoothly for most buyers…” — Windows 7 Launch Hits Some Snags.

Yes, the buying went smoothly, however the upgraded installations for student versions from 32-bits to 64-bits were not as smooth. “A small number of customers who purchased the Windows 7 upgrade through the Student Offer have reported challenges in completing the download and/or installation of the product.” a Microsoft spokesperson told InternetNews.com in an email.

Not all is gloom and doom with this version of Windows. PCWorld.com writes in an article: Making a Case for Windows 7 Migration – that a major corporation in India is thrilled with the new operating system. Murali Krishna, VP and head CCD, Infosys Technologies is testing Windows 7 on 200 machines before upgrading their entire company. So far, the results are outstanding – “users aren’t complaining, especially, he says, with the brisk start up and shutdown times.” Krishna says.

Listening to the Customers

By all reports, it sounds like Microsoft has finally started listening to its customers complaints over the years. You know the ones – operating system is so overloaded with stuff that it is slow and cumbersome, too much flash and not enough meat, constant security issues while the fun media stuff plays and looks good. It is time that Microsoft started taking the heart of the operating system seriously and provided a clean, solid platform in which customers can perform and add things when they want to not because it is forced upon them. Getting back to the basics – letting the customer decide which features they want!

Isn’t that what made Google search engine so popular? When everyone was building out flash and pop search engines in the beginning – Google came out with a blank screen – and a search bar – that was it. And they have kept the same look for over 10 years.

A positive review by PCMag.com has put the new Windows 7 operating system in this light:

“Despite some pundits claiming that Windows 7 is no more than a Vista service pack, there’s a lot more to it than that. Microsoft has certainly addressed many of the complaints surrounding Vista, such as the lack of backward compatibility, the lengthy start-up and install times, the broad disk and memory footprint, and the inability to remove IE. But the company has also added a number of new interface helpers that will make the new OS more pleasurable and efficient to use. Figure in improved performance and networking, a smaller disk and memory footprint, and slick handling of devices, and it’s hard to call this anything other than a full-fledged new OS.” — PCMag.com Microsoft Windows 7

It seems that Microsoft has finally hit on a winner. The new operating system is more powerful and robust while using less resources – it is scalable and has better backwards capabilities; although we are warned to go slow with the backward XP capabilities as some bugs are still being worked out. Security features and cloud computing network capabilities are much more corporate user friendly.

Overall – it looks like Windows 7 will be a much better operating system than its predecessors. We will be looking forward to more reports as only time will truly tell.

HEADLINES: Obama gives Nobel Peace Prize to the “world for peace” saying: “I haven’t done anything that millions haven’t been doing for years – calling for peace.”

The above headline is fiction – fantasy – perhaps a little hopeful – but certainly not real. It would be a noble gesture to give back the “Nobel Peace Prize” since United States President Obama hasn’t done anything to merit it in his short tenure in office. At least nothing that millions of American citizens haven’t been doing for years – and as a matter of fact, hundreds of millions of people around the world have been doing – calling for peace.

What has Obama done to create peace?

Obama’s incredible rise to peace advocate consisted of 11 days in office and the spending of trillions of U.S. dollars to keep the citizens of the United States from lynching AIG, CitiBank (and dozens of other banks), GM, Chrysler, and many of the corporate executives involved in the dramatic economic down-spiral of our banking system, stocks and hundreds of thousands of jobs lost in America.

Let’s recap Obama’s first 100 days in office:

January 22, 2009 – Signs an executive order to close Guantanamo

February 17, 2009 – Tax cuts in Stimulus Bill

February 19, 2009 – A plan to rescue mortgages

March 9, 2009 – Lifted the ban on embryonic Stem cell research

March 11, 2009 – Signed $410 Billion Stimulus bill

March 18, 2009 – Expressed anger over AIG receiving more bailout money and once again using that money to pay out millions of dollars in corporate bonuses.

March 30, 2009 – Announced that Auto companies on their own

April 2, 2009 – Attended a conference of world leaders at a G-20 summit in London

April 13, 2009 – Lifted restrictions on Cuba (that will make a lot of Cuban Cigar smokers happy)

April 20, 2009 – Asked Congress to identify $100 million dollars in additional cuts

April 20, 2009 – Put an end to torture techniques used to interrogate prisoners

April 23, 2009 – Allowed the release of CIA torture memos

In short, there is nothing within the first 11 days of his presidency that has warranted any kind of peace prize let alone the “Nobel Peace Prize”. There was not even a call for peace, negotiations for peace, agreements of cease-fires or anything of that nature.

Traditionally, he Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to individuals who have made a dramatic effort at establishing peace, negotiated peace efforts and have gone above and beyond in trying to achieve and achieving that end. “Blessed are the peace makers…”

“Greg Mortenson is a remarkable man, whose leadership, passion, and character is truly transforming lives and inspiring millions,” said Bono Mack. “For over fifteen years, Greg has devoted his life to promoting peace and improving education in the war-torn regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

“I am deeply honored to have known Greg for many years and am proud of everything he has accomplished thus far. One of the most humble people I know, Greg is a living hero and his dedication to peace is truly changing the world. I am proud to nominate this most-worthy individual for this high honor.”

Greg Mortenson is a man who has worked toward peace for over 15 years in war-torn regions of the world.

Who is Greg Mortenson?

Others who wonder what Obama has done:

Obama and the Nobel Peace Prize – a story of Obama’s efforts in the Middle East

This is an interesting article because it refers to work that Obama has begun after the February 1st deadline for nominations. Sorry – that doesn’t count. Let’s wait for the results of those initial talks but let’s be real – his nomination was based on what? Eleven days in the office of President?

Obama’s Nobel Is Premature, Historians and Political Scientists Say – Foxnews.com
How the Nobel Peace Prize is Awarded – Foxnews.com

This article is about those selfless individuals who have sacrificed years of service to promote peace at their own personal expense and yet have been passed over. There were over 200 nominations and we are sure that many of them have done more to promote peace than the President of the United States. To those selfless men and women who have worked so hard without their work being recognized – our hat goes off to you!

Who is responsible for this travesty in human sacrifice?

There is only one body of individuals who can take responsibility for the outcome of the Nobel Peace Prize and that is the Norwegian Nobel Committee. They have based their decision on a feel-good attitude of what “may come” and “what could be” rather than what “is being done” and “what has been done“. Alfred Nobel would be ashamed.

Alfred Nobel’s foundation was set up in 1865. He laid down the “bulk of his wealth to be reserved for the financing of annual honorary awards to be made in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine or physiology, literature and peace.” — NobelPeacePrize.org.

It was meant to be an honor and a reward for actual work and progress over the previous years achievements in those subjects – not what we hope to accomplish in the future. Everyone hopes for world peace but not many have made the sacrifice to achieve that goal and certainly not in only eleven days in office.

In an article by ChannelWeb entitled “Microsoft Office 2010: A Necessary Slap At Google” sounds like a cat fight in a school yard. Microsoft isn’t slapping anybody. What they are trying to do is not loose face in the new world of “Cloud Computing“.

How about this article in today’s TimesOnline: “Google launches piggyback browser as a war with Microsoft gathers pace“. It sounds like they have just launched a stealth bomber and dropped a bomb.

Lets keep war out of this and keep technical issues to technical issues. I realize that the modern day media must try to make everything sound dramatic or disastrous just to keep readers interested because there is so much information on the web; however, there are those who would just like the facts once in a while without all of the phony huupla.

Microsoft Browser IE

Microsoft has not been in a supremacy race with anyone for years. They have been playing catch up with technology because in the beginning they tried to force control of the entire Internet market and refused to open their source code so that others could help them make a better product. Let’s face it – if the IE browser was such a great browser they wouldn’t have lost market share to Firefox, Opera and now Google. IE is slow, invasive, resource intensive and years behind the competition. The only reason that it is maintaining the market share that it still has is because many people don’t know how to switch.

Enter – Google Chrome Browser

The “Chrome Browser” is a stand alone browser and an add-on to Microsoft IE (for those who want a better browser). But is Chrome really a browser?

What is a Browser?

Wikipedia describes a browser as: “A web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. An information resource is identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) and may be a web page, image, video, or other piece of content.[1] Hyperlinks present in resources enable users to easily navigate their browsers to related resources.”

For the most part that may not help you. Simply put, it is a graphical interface between the user (user computer) and the Internet. It allows you to interact with information and look up things such as articles, pictures, videos, etc… in an easy, single application.

In that respect – then Chrome is indeed a web browser. However, it is also much more. It is the new web applications tool that allows you to customize it in ways that previously were not available.

Web Application Interface

With today’s interest in YouTube™, MySpace™, Facebook™ and Twitter™ (plus many others) and the advancement of widgets – the new Chrome Application Browser allows you to add your favorite applications, RSS feeds and even customize your look and layout – all the while giving you the opportunity to have higher security features and lightning speed.

In our testing of the “web application tool”, Google created a browser that seems to be based on the very concept that made Google famous in the first place – Simplicity! It is basically a bare-boned web browser when unpacked – just like Google Search Engine. A simple page without all the accessories. You get to build out the accessories as you see fit.

What about “Firefox”?

Firefox by Mozilla has been on the cutting edge of web browser development for years. It was one of the first browsers that supported CSS2 & then CSS3, XML standards and some of the highest security ratings in the industry. While Microsoft IE was getting hacked into on a constant basis, Firefox users could rest comfortably. It wasn’t long that Firefox started drawing away much of the IE customer base. It has been Firefox that has given Microsoft IE browser the run for their money – not Google.

Now with Google Chrome on the scene – Microsoft will inevitably loose even more market share to open source solutions and better programming.

Try:

Coming up next: CIDA News will be looking into the new technological wave of “Cloud Computer” and see how it will change the face of computer technology and how we use the Internet.

Anybody who likes country music surely likes Carrie Underwood. What is not to like? She has a voice that can knock you off your feet, she’s young, talented, smart and attractive – she has everything going for her. And now, she has a new single – Cowboy Casanova!

I like Carrie Underwood! I think her music is great and I could listen to it all day long – who can forget ; “Last Name” and “So Small”?

However, I like my country to be country. So I have to ask again – Carrie, what happened to the country in Cowboy Casanova?

Cowboy Casanova

Carrie Underwood’s new single is hot, sultry and even a little provocative. The song has a good beat and strong rhythm.

In her music video, Carrie looks like a madam and/or call girl in a parlor of iniquity who is coaching her ladies not to fall for this so-called cowboy casanova. The style makes you think of the 1920’s or perhaps she is trying out for a role in a remake of “Chicago” instead of the wild west or even the recent west.

The Cowboy – looks more like a run down jazz player shrouded in shadows and mysterious. Near the end, he looks more like he just stepped our of a remake of a Phillip Marlowe or Sam Spade detective movie set instead of a country music video.

Cross Musical Boundaries

Carrie Underwood’s music does have a way of cutting across traditional musical boundaries – and I see the same thing happening to this song. I give it a solid eight out of ten in my hits list. It would have been a nine at least if there had even been a cowboy hat in the music video. You can’t will them all.

Let us know what you think! Leave a comment, we would love to hear from you. I predict that “Cowboy Casanova” is going to be another tremendous hit for Carrie Underwood. We will have to just wait and see.

Until next time – this is Kirsten Daly with CIDA News Music Review
