Decorating Easter eggs is a tradition with most families, from basic coloring of eggs to 3D crafts and Easter projects. While dipping eggs in dye is fun for toddlers, engaging older kids and other adults decorating Easter eggs can be challenging. The Purpose of Christmas Tree Skirts

Christmas tree skirts are festive decorations used beneath the Christmas tree to cover the ground immediately around the tree stand. While tree skirts are beautiful additions to the Christmas tree, their purpose goes beyond mere tradition. Like each piece of the Christmas tree, the tree skirt has a purpose behind its usage.

A History of Tree Skirts

The first Christmas trees were actually lit with candles as opposed to bulbs. This meant that while lit, the candles would drip wax onto the floor. Christmas tree skirts were created to gather the wax as well as the fallen needles from the live trees to make clean up easier.

Traditional tree skirts were not very decorative and were simple pieces of circular fabric that could be placed beneath the tree and taken out for cleaning without hassle. As technology advanced, tree skirts became more decorative. Since wax was not going to drip on the tree skirt and ruin it, the skirt became more ornate with new fabrics and designs.

Now, the tree skirt is used primarily to hide the tree stand and add interest to the bottom of the tree. Placing presents beneath the tree on the tree skirt has become common practice, while placing presents that were light enough to be hung in the tree had been standard before bulbs became widely used. Tree skirts are still helpful for hiding the tree stand and gathering fallen needles even now that skirts have become more about decoration than function.

Types of Tree Skirts

All sorts of materials go into the making of tree skirts. No longer are simple fabrics used but every type of fabric from cotton to upholstery grade. Velvet and silks are most used, and many skirts have tassel trim in complementary colors. While traditional tree skirts had little to no decoration on them, modern day tree skirts are very decorative. Tree skirts usually depict scenes from the nativity or a Christmas village, though many tree skirts take a non-traditional approach and depict reindeer, birds, and snowmen, or purely decorative items like holly and swirls.

Modern tree skirts come in multiple sizes since Christmas trees are so varied. They still hold to the traditional shape, encircling a tree stand and coming to rest beneath the tree over the ground. Once the preferred cut mark is located, snip the rope with kitchen shears or other sharp cutting utensils. Make sure the cut is clean to avoid short circuiting. To perfect the cut, bend the rope light to the left and then to the right to see if any copper wires protrude. If they do, snip off the extra.

Stress Saver – Prepare Early for Your Christmas Light Display

Summer is in full swing across the country and staying cool is the task at hand. But, as I sit and stare at my lighted palm tree, I can’t help but think that soon my favorite season will be here…Christmas. Each year I go through schedule that allows me to prepare my Christmas lights, trees, and outdoor decorations in a gradual manner so I do not have a lot of stress scrambling to fix light strands, repaint blowmolds, and repair wireframe rope lights in October and November.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love being outside as much as possible during the summer so I keep the light fixes to a minimum in order to make the most of the nice weather. But, when there are a few spare moments, I like to get some tasks out of the way. July is usually when I start the process by taking care of my outdoor Christmas decorations and wireframes.

It never fails that the harsh winter weather will do some sort of damage to my wireframes. The most common issue is clips which get broken and can no longer keep the rope lights on the wireframe. In July, I go about re-attaching rope lights to the wireframes. I personally like to use crocodile clips to attach the rope lights because they are built for rope lights, are very sturdy, and can be rotated in any direction for a perfectly aligned look.

I also take a look at the shape my rope lights are in. There are times when the rope lights may have been accidentally cut or I may just want to change the color of lights on my wireframe. Whatever the case may be, I take a quick assessment of the lights and decide how many new strands of rope lights I will need to fix the wireframes. I will do my best to repair the lights with a splice connector so I can save the lights if at all possible.

I have to be honest, if I have used a wireframe for a few years in a row, I like to branch out and see what new outdoor Christmas decorations I can add to my display. I personally like to focus on large wireframes that can complement my display but a simple addition of a few walkway trees or wireframe snowflakes will also do the trick. Since I normally know how my display will look, I go ahead and plan for a few additions to my display and factor in what I need to buy.

I am ready to place my order for new clips, rope lights and some new outdoor decorations now that I have taken quick stock of my wireframes and decorations. I normally order more clips and a few more rope lights than I think I may need just in case another wireframe calamity strikes or I want to use different color rope lights. I probably spend about a half hour on a rainy Summer night to figure out what I will need. Rather than scrambling to attach my rope lights to a wireframe in late November, I can take my time and replace what I know is broken…and then get back outside to sit under my palm tree. :)

Just past the midway point of the year, as I search for reasons to put up my Christmas lights, the 4th of July is the perfect reason to break out my patriotic lights and decorations to commemorate the country's independence.

While fireworks may be the light show of choice for many 4th of July revelers, I tend to light up the holiday with red, white and blue mini lights adorning my back yard. As Old Glory waves in the breeze on my front porch, I compliment the flag with colored starlight spheres to round out a salute to our great country.

Never fails. No matter what sort of care I take to store Christmas lights, the lights inevitably get tangled, twisted, and intertwined. Not sure how it happens…but it does. I begin untangling lights early in the summer whenever I may have a few minutes here or there. Untangling my Christmas lights slowly over the months helps me maintain my sanity (rather than untangling the lights all at once) and helps me decide what new Christmas lights I may need to order.

Yesterday was my first round against my lights. I had a few strings of LED lights that were on a shelf in the garage and I figured what the heck I can straighten them out in a heartbeat. Boy was I wrong. A few innocent strings of Christmas lights quickly became an entanglement that had me scratching my head. I followed my normal procedure of stretching the light strings out as best I can to avoid making the situation worse, spacing the strings apart so I can tell which strings is which, and then start unwinding the lights from the male plug end.
In theory, that sounds like a good plan until I come across some knotted Christmas lights. By the time I untie the knot and continue working my way through the strings of lights, I have invested 20 minutes in my Christmas lights and have only separated a few strings. I can only imagine how the rest of my lights will turn out.

I know, I know…I should store the lights better and, for the most part, I do but there always seems to be some strings that get all discombobulated. Lend me your tips and tricks. There are plenty of outdoor Christmas decorations on the market but there may be times when you want a completely unique decoration or one that simply is too expensive to buy. You can create your very own personalized decorations with some mini Christmas lights, plywood and some ingenuity.

To get started:

An idea what you want your decoration to look like
- Will it be a snowflake, Santa, or a favorite cartoon character?
Once you have settled on the design, figure out the size
- Take a look at decorations you have already. How big are they? Can they be seen by passers-by? If so, start with that size and adjust to your idea
- Keep in mind that the bigger your design, the more lights you will need
Purchase a sheet of plywood large enough for your design
- We recommend a ½ inch thick plywood to stand up to the elements
Map out the color scheme of your design
Get enough solid color mini lights for the color scheme
Grab a drill and roll up your sleeves

Start by sketching your design onto the plywood by either drawing it yourself or by having an artistic friend sketch the design onto. Sketching with a marker ought to do the trick. Just make sure whatever you use is dark enough and thick enough to see.

Night lights can be too bright, do not come in designs you like, or you simply want something a little more playful than a night light. Your daughter may like battery operated fairy lights hanging on her headboard or from a curtain. Little girls and fairies go together like Christmas and trees, so fairy lights could do wonders to help fight off the monsters in the closet.
