I probably wouldn’t have noticed it in my inbox if I hadn’t read something about it from a friend and fellow blogger on Facebook. But I saw the first line as a preview in my Gmail, and I had to click on it because I knew the same message had been sent to a number of my friends. Let me just share with you the first paragraph:

Hello Christina, it was a pleasure meeting you recently at the networking event. It’s always great to get out to meet new people, exchange ideas and refer business among peers. I’m sure you’re wading through your pile of business cards not sure who does what, so here is a recap of how we might able to help you.

Warm regards,
Paul *****

Of course, Paul ***** goes on to tell me about his agency’s book and newsletter, with a pitch to hire them to do PR for me.

In and of itself, it’s not unlike hundreds of other spammy press releases I receive and delete without opening. But this one made a fatal flaw in the opening. With a subject line that reads “Pleasure Meeting You the Other Day” and a first sentence referring to a vague “networking event” we supposedly met at, this pitch is based on a lie. I suppose there are many people who attend enough networking events to not remember everyone they met recently, but I haven’t been to such an event in months.

Did I mention that the email author is listed as “Alyson” despite this being signed by Paul? Since Alyson ***** is referred to as a “PR maven” in the pitch that follows, I would assume that they’re married, but they should realize how it looks when paul at insertagencynamehere dot com shows up as Alyson in the email headers.

So, Paul, you should revise your tactic. Change your subject line and remove any reference to having met the undisclosed recipients of your email blast. Spamming people is bad enough without lying to them on top of it. And you think you’re so good at public relations? What a joke.

When you do an email blast, especially when you’re targeting potential business to business clients, you don’t want to insult the intelligence of your recipients by lying to them. Especially when it is so easy to prove that it’s a lie. Lying in such a manner makes you no better than ED drug spammers.

And if your business is PR, email outreach is clearly part of the services you are pitching to potential clients. If you screw that up, why would anyone pay you to screw it up for them? This reflects badly on your image, and reputation is pretty much what PR exists for. You’re doing it wrong.

Update: I was just going through my spam folder, and I found an apology from Alyson in there:

Hello:

It’s late Sunday night and I just got home to an InBox full of upset people who are wondering why they got an email titled “Pleasure Meeting You This Week” which came from my email and was signed from Paul *****.

Paul sent an email earlier this evening that was intended for 20 people he did indeed meet. It should have come from his email and to his small group, but he made a mistake in our email system and it went to my entire database, instead of the few intended.

I am so very sorry; Please accept my personal apology.

Sincerely,

Alyson *****

So she fessed up to the mistake, but that doesn’t change the effect of what happened. That message was in my spam box. I wouldn’t have even noticed it if I hadn’t been cleaning it out on a regular basis to make sure important messages aren’t getting filtered improperly. The fact remains that an untold number of people received the same message as I did and were upset about the false premise that we’d met when we hadn’t. This is a PR nightmare for a PR agency.

The new moral of the story is to check, double check, and triple check before sending an email blast. Know how to use your email software. You’re one wrong click away from ruining your reputation.

Joe DeMike from Google is back to talk to us about promoting your business online. Mostly about AdWords and AdWords Express.

The way you created your website, how it’s organized, etc. THAT is going to affect how much you pay for advertising. If you want to save money on advertising, have a good website.

Why Google?

Google is currently the most widely used search engine in the world. He’s not saying not to advertise on Bing, Facebook, Yelp, etc. – but he suggests starting with Google because they have the most users. (He’s obviously biased, too.)

Stan is a big dinosaur sculpture at the Googleplex, serving as a reminder that they can become obsolete at any time. So they try to be the absolute best they can.

There has been a paradigm shift. Traditional advertising had businesses looking for customers. Now, when you’re advertising with Google, customers are searching for businesses.

Four Phases:

Awareness – You can’t get customers if they aren’t aware that your business exists. Groupon and Living Social are good examples of these.

Trial – Once people know you’re there, you want them to try out your product or service.

Repeat – How do you convert new customers into repeat customers? Great products, great customer service, moments that matter.

Loyalty – When customers come back to you even when competitors may have superior offerings.

Ads appear on search engine results pages (SERPs). First position doesn’t always go to the highest bidder because they don’t have the best quality score. We’ll come back to that later. Other sites like Google Maps also display paid ads.

Comment from the peanut gallery about being unable to find a historical site in a Google Maps search, but finding 20 pages of hotels that are “1 mile away” from that historical site. Joe says it’s because the park or historical site has not claimed their Google Local location. So businesses, if you are not claiming your location on the map, unrelated businesses that may mention their promixity to you will be showing up in searches for your name. (Not helpful for the consumers here, Google.)

Paid ads also appear on millions of websites. I run an AdSense leaderboard on my other blog, Well, in THIS House.

Google Business Photos will photograph your business for free to give potential customers a virtual tour. This service is completely opt-in. (Side note: May not be free, based on their FAQ versus how much Joe knows.)

AdWords Express

15% of business owners are under 40. (I was the only business owner in the room who kept my hand up when asked the “under 40″ question.) This means 85% of business owners are over 40. People like Joe travel around to help educate businesses about how to use unfamiliar technology. If AdWords is something that doesn’t make sense to you, you can use the AdWords Express product, which is designed to be easier to use.

What is AdWords Express?

A simple, fast way to advertise on Google.

No experience or maintenance required.

Send visitors to your website of Google+ Page.

To set up, provide business information, write and ad, and Google’s technology does the rest.

When people search in your area for products or services, your ad will appear in search results, just like an AdWords ad.

Be sure you choose the proper category when setting up your business information. Choose categories that are relevant to your business; you want to be in the category most specific to your business so you don’t end up paying for clicks from people who aren’t actually interested in what you have to offer. (i.e. Don’t just pick “restaurant,” pick “seafood restaurant.”)

When creating your ad, your zip code is important in determining your ad cost. Google will tell you the average amount being spent by your local competitors. Don’t choose a budget amount higher than the top amount supplied by Google, because the search volume doesn’t exist for them to deliver enough clicks to you. On the other side, a monthly budget under $50 will not allow Google to optimize your campaign because they won’t have enough click data.

Google AdWords

AdWords is the Cadillac of online advertising. AdWords Express is the Honda Civic. LOL.

How does Google AdWords work?

AdWords is an auction.

Advertisers bid on keywords to win a position on Googles SERPs.

Your ad’s position is calculated based on bid and quality.

What is the bid?

Your bid, or Maximum Cost Per Click (Max CPC) is the maximum amount you’re willing to pay for a single click on your ad.

In addition to the bid, advertisers set a daily budget, which controls how much advertisers pay overall. This is the most you’re willing to pay per day.

What is a Quality Score?

An estimate of how Google expects a keyword to perform. Your quality score is calculated based on your landing page, ad relevancy, and clickthrough rate. If you bid on the keyword [vacuum cleaners] but your ad talks about shoes and your landing page is about shoes, you’ll have a very low quality score.

Structure your AdWords account for succcess

This is apparently the most important slide in the whole program, because most people structure their AdWords accounts improperly. I just wish the top of the graph wasn’t in yellow…Bad visual choice.

AdWords Account

Unique email address & password

Billing information

Campaign

Daily budget

Location/language targeting

Distribution preference

End date

Ad Group

Keywords

Ads

The WRONG way to structure your account…

One account with one campaign and one ad group… but a ridiculous number of specific keyword phrases for a general query.

You want people who are looking for one specific thing to find that one specific thing. If you’re too vague, you’ll pay too much for your advertising and you’re not converting any traffic.

How to Choose Keywords

What is a keyword?

A keyword is a word or phrase that can trigger an ad

Keywords are not case sensitive

Use the Golidlocks Principle to pick keywords.

Too general: vacation
Too specific: 3 br vacation rental grayton beach
JUST RIGHT: florida vacation rental

What are keyword match types?

Broad: This work or phrase plus variations, in any order.
Phrase: This word or phrase plus close variants, in this order. Can include additional words before and/or after.
Exact: This word or phrase plus close variants, typed in this order. Cannot include additional words.
Negative: NONE! Ads cannot appear when this word or phrased is included in the search query.

Negative keyword examples for service providers: become, study, class, classes, course, license, training, jobs, supplies, price

Negative keyword examples for anyone: free, lyrics, download

Use the Google Keyword Tool for ideas.

Writing Great Ads

Ad title

two description lines

display URL

destination URL

Include a call to action in your ad. What sets your business apart? Guarantee? Made in the USA? Won any awards? Describe your products and services. Link to the best page on your website. People know within 2 seconds if they can find what they want on your site.

I’m here at smAlbany 2012 at the University of Albany College of Nanoscience & Engineering. The session I’m covering here is Grow Your Business Online with Joe DeMike from Google.

Does anyone know how old Google is? Google is 14 years old, founded in 1998 as a Stanford University graduate project. Reminiscing about AltaVista, Yahoo’s directory folders that were categorized by humans.

Google’s mission is not to take over the world [evil laugh] is to organize the world’s information and make it easily accessible. They are focusing on personalized results. The average query length in Google is four words. The word “creepy” was bandied about earlier, but they don’t want to be creepy.

The Paris Hilton Problem

Depending on who you are, searching for Paris Hilton has different meanings. If you’re in the 20ish crowd, you’re probably looking for the heiress fashionista. If you’re over 50, you’re more likely to be searching for the Hilton hotel in Paris, France. They use personalized signals to determine what you’re looking for, although you can turn this off in your privacy settings.

Google’s motto is “Don’t Be Evil.” They have that hung up in their boardroom. But over the last few years, they’ve created a problem. People are going online with purchase intent, but if your business is not online, you are being unfairly left out because only one person in this packed auditorium has opened a phone book in the last 30 days. No one looks for businesses without doing their research online anymore.

Small Business Advocacy is working on getting American businesses online. Joe works on the Small Business Advocacy project. FYI: Google does not generally call people about AdWords and getting them online. Other people use their name in these calls though, so beware.

Overview of Google’s Online Tools

Get found on Google (search, AdWords)

Connect with your customers (Google+)

Get unique insight (Google Analytics)

Office productivity tools (Google Apps)

Get Found on Google

97% of online consumers research products & services online before buying. If you are not online, you are not an order qualifier. An order qualifier is a collection of businesses at least good enough to search within. The order winner is the one from which the purchase is made.

How Google search works: Organic search results are where you can’t pay to get higher rankings. Paid search results appear based on ad spending. Paid ads are on the top and the sides; there can be 3 paid ads on the top and 8 on the side of a Google SERP. The person who pays the most does not always appear on the top of the paid ad listings.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Content is the key

Be engaging

Use important keywords

Keep up-to-date

Use Webmaster Tools

Find out how Google sees your site

Sign up for alerts

Tell Google about your site

Set realistic expectations

Ask the right questions

Tips for Promoting your website

Use email for efficient, inexpensive communication.

Use social media to develop relationships with fans.

Promote your website on receipts and other print materials.

Give people an incentive to visit you online.

Invite happy customers to recommend your site.

You are 7 times more likely to buy something that has been recommended by someone else. It doesn’t matter if strangers “like” you on Facebook or +1 you on Google+ because it’s most effective when the purchaser knows the person making the recommendation…it jumps to 14 times more likely.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

Pay-Per-Click (PPS) model

Advertisers do not pay to show ads

Pay only when someone clicks on the ad

Google offers two PPC options

AdWords

AdWords Express

The goal of SEM campaigns is conversions. You can use the conversion tracker to keep track of website purchases, but there’s obviously no way for Google to track when a person clicks on your ad and then walks into your store. That’s why you pay per click and not per conversion.

AdWords FAQ

How much does AdWords cost? Advertisers control the cost.

Where will ads appear? Advertisers decide.

What will the ads say? Advertisers write ads that can be changed anytime.

What is the commitment? None. There are no startup or cancellation fees.

AdWords Express FAQ

How is this different from AdWords?

AdWords Express picks keywords and bids based on your monthly budget.

No website required.

Ads appear on Google and Google Maps only.

Ads are text only.

Express uses a monthly budget, while AdWords uses a daily budget.

Social Media and Google+

90% of consumers online trust recommendations from people they know

Google shows +1 recommendations from people you know on SERPs, Google search ads, and websites.

You can add the +1 button to your website.

You can create a Google+ Page: a free business profile with interactive features.

Posts

Business info

Photos

Videos

Group video chats (Hangouts)

Circles

King Arthur Flour uses Google Hangouts to invite their customers to watch live streaming video of chefs in their kitchen to demonstrate recipes and allow the audience to ask questions. The video also streams live on YouTube and is available to watch later.

The industry standard is 80% of revenue coming from repeat business.

Why do analytics and website optimization matter?

Missed opportunities: Website visitors who did not become customers.

What answers can Google Analytics provide?

Where are visitors coming from?

What keywords did they use?

Am I creating effective content?

Where are visitors abandoning my shopping cart?

How can I improve site interaction?

Advertisers have to capture interest within five seconds. This is why you can’t skip YouTube ads for five seconds. If you’re not interested after 5 seconds, you can skip the ad, and the advertiser doesn’t have to pay.

Set goals and track performance.

Google Insights for Search

View what the world is searching for and gain insights for your business. You can see interest over time for various web searches to see when to time your ad campaigns.

Compare interest between states or regions. Example: What type of jeans should a Wyoming retailer stock? What about Oklahoma?

Google Alerts

Type in a search query, and whenever something new appears on the Internet that Google’s spiders crawl, you get an email with the link(s).

Mobile Compatibility

Mobile matters

By 2013, more people will use their mobile phones than computers to get online

By 2015, there will be one mobile device for every person on Earth

Mobile websites are:

Designed for small screens

Thumb friendly

Easy to navigate

Did you know? The Web is a subset of the Internet. The Web is what you can see, while the Internet includes all of the data that travels through cyberspace that you can’t see (like email)

Create your mobile site at HowToGoMo.com

Google Apps

Web-based email, calendar, and documents for teams

Saves money, no software to buy, maintain, or upgrade

Free for up to 10 users and 10 GB email storage

Apps for Business

$5 per month per user or $50/year

Unlimited users

25 GB email storage

Email organized into threads

White label branding

The latest version, no problem! Google Apps supports multiple file formats.

Update (June 12, 2012): The event has already passed, but we can still collect donations!

Next month, I’ll be participating in my second Relay For Life. My dad has been in remission for over a year now, and his immune system celebrated its first birthday on April 4, one year after his successful autologous stem cell transplant. I am so grateful for all of the research that made his treatment and recovery possible, and the American Cancer Society always needs money to continue funding research to ensure more and more people can survive the diagnosis of cancer. That’s why I am the team captain for Team Jerome.

So I’m walking. I’m walking even though my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome kicked my butt after last year’s Relay – and I only stayed until about 11:00 pm. If my dad could suffer through a grueling course of chemo, I can suck it up and deal with two or three days out of commission after the event.

We need your donations to help us reach our goal of $2,500 for the American Cancer Society. Your donations are tax deductible and go to a very worthy cause. Over the last 12 months, the Capital Region of the American Cancer Society has been able to provide 2,912 rides to cancer patients, 158 free wigs to women with cancer, 155 women with a Look Good…Feel Better treatment session, and more than 27,000 nights of free lodging at New York Hope Lodges for cancer patients and their families.

Why Donate to My Team?

I’m sure you may know other people involved in the Relay For Life. As an extra incentive to donate to my team, I will be publishing a blog post at the end of June to thank everyone who donates through me. If you donate more than $50, I will link your name (the one used to make the donation) to your company or personal website or social profile of your choice. I will also create a press release out of the thank you post for online distribution. This is not a paid link; the money does not go to me, it goes to the American Cancer Society. This is just my way of thanking all of my donors in the best (and most public) way I know how.

If you make a donation of $50 or greater, please comment on this post to let me know where you would like me to point your link, or email me at twilightsun at gmail dot com with the subject line Relay For Life Donor Link.

Thank you all for your support.

I was tweeting about my current addiction to cashews, and I joked about contacting Emerald Nuts about sponsoring a blog post. (Half-joked. I’d totally love to set that up.) I couldn’t find them on Twitter, so I headed to the Emerald Nuts website…

…and proceeded to have to wait for their ridiculous Flash animations to load every time I clicked one of their internal links. It irritated me. I hope they have a mobile version of their site, since many phones don’t do Flash.

So I wondered if it was just me, and the easiest way to find that out was to conduct a quick poll via Twitter. I asked:

QUICK POLL: Do you ever WANT to see a Flash-y brand page, or would you rather just get down to business?

@ChristinaGayle flash? never.

@CutestKidEver if I go a site that’s too flashy or doesn’t work in mobile browsers, I immediately leave.

— Kat’s GF Kitchen (@katsgfkitchen) March 15, 2012

Not a single person who responded ever wanted to see a Flash site. Not one.

So brands take note: keep your flashy designs off the Web and keep it simple instead. We don’t want to sacrifice function for form.

After participating in Bulldog Reporter’s Mommy Blogger Panel, I must say that I started getting some much better pitches via email. However, the bad ones have not stopped coming.

Today’s bad pitch is actually quite hilariously irrelevant for my life and my blog, and I need to share with you how awesomely bad it is:

“Brush Buddies the makers of the wildly successful Justin Bieber line of oral products announced today, on Bieber’s 18th birthday, that Brush Buddies is inviting his fans to create their own Brush Buddies Justin Bieber Singing Toothbrush; as a gift, of sorts, from Bieber to his fans.”

That’s right, folks…stick Justin Bieber in your mouth, and he sings! (He’s 18 now. I’m allowed to make inappropriate comments like this.) No one in my house would ever want a singing Justin Bieber toothbrush. I can’t imagine anyone actually wanting one, but there’s just no accounting for tween girls and their obsessions.

The pitch went on, and I started laughing harder.

“Justin Bieber fans, known as “Beliebers”, have been busy today delivering a number of gifts and tributes to the pop music icon. True to his character, Bieber has been exceptionally gracious to his Beliebers by repeatedly thanking them for their outpouring of support.”

Now I can’t get Journey’s hit song, “Don’t Stop Beliebing” out of my head. (They were fans before he was even BORN!)

The thing that really killed me, though, was visiting the Brush Buddies Justin Bieber Toothbrush page from the link provided in the press release. The picture of the toothbrush is ridiculous enough as it is, but they clearly need to hire me as their copywriter or editor. I never would have let them push this page live with this description text:

“2 buttons – 1 button when you wake up in the morning and one before you goto bed. Each button will play a Justin Bieber’s song for 2 minutes which is the dentist recommend time to brush your teeth. Now you can enjoy brushing your teeth while you listen to Justin’s best songs”

For the record, that horrific sentence should read: Each button will play a Justin Bieber song for 2 minutes, which is the dentist-recommended time to brush your teeth. It’s still a bit awkward without changing the wording, but it’s at least grammatically correct my way.

If nothing else comes of this but shared laughter (and perhaps getting this post to rank for Justin Bieber singing toothbrush) I’ll be happy.

Resumes are supposed to be pretty serious things, right? I hadn’t worried about a resume in years since starting Phenomenal Content, but a few months ago, I did try to land a gig with the Cheezburger Network, so I got a little crazy.

They never got back to me, and I assume it’s only because they hired someone like Betty White instead. (I’d pick her over me, too.) Because I don’t think I’ll ever have a use for this particular version of my resume again, I figured I’d share it with you, the Internet. All you have to do is click on this link to see it in all of its PDF glory:

Writing a resume like a boss

Oh snap, that was fabulous, right? If it made you actually interested in hiring me, my email address was on there. Use it. I’m available for writing, blogging, proofreading, editing, and social media projects. I’m on Twitter (twice), Facebook, and Pinterest most often.

So I like to browse my spam comments before I delete them…just in case there’s a false positive. The most recent wave of spam comments I got was on my recent Merry Christmas video, where I sang a karaoke version of Santa Baby for fun. There was too much negativity in the social media sphere, and I wanted to post something positive to make people smile or laugh.

Imagine my surprise (and, admittedly, amusement) when I read this comment that had been spammed from that post:

The next time I read a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as much as this one. I mean, I know it was my choice to read, but I actually thought youd have something interesting to say. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something that you could fix if you werent too busy looking for attention.

Riiiiight. The commenter’s “name” was Cholesterol diet (amasidi0324@live.com) from healthycholesteroldiets.com – and if you want to block the IP address from your blog, it’s 59.146.188.76.

So this is a thing now? I don’t understand the tactic. A lot of bloggers would delete the comment simply because it was insulting – or possibly offensive, if they really were whining and looking for attention.

It doesn’t make sense to me. The fake “Nice blog” comments are getting auto-spammed, so spammers are trying the attack route? I wonder if anyone is dumb enough to argue back…

Do you remember way back in August 2009 when I made a post about SEO Cold Calling, aka Contact Form Spam? It was lambasting a company (that I didn’t name) who tried to sell me crappy SEO services by using my copywriting services contact form.

Amusingly enough, I got a spam comment on that post a few weeks ago. Because the spammer intended it to be a publicly viewed comment (or not? – you’ll see why) I feel no remorse about leaving the email address and such intact. I don’t want the actual links to work, of course. Emphasis is mine to point out the ridiculousness.

So Let’s Review…

Bad English. Why would I hire an SEO company that can’t even write a sentence in proper English? (Yet another reason to hire native speakers for your online endeavors. Outsource to India to save money, and you’ll often find that you get what you pay for.)

“One of the very few company [sic] which offer [sic] organic SEO services.” If this is the way you pitch me – with blog spam – I can hardly believe that your SEO services are going to be anything close to “organic.”

This wasn’t an email. The template was obviously meant to be used for email spam, but they didn’t bother changing the text when switching to to blog comment spam instead.

Fake remove instructions. I can guarantee that removeme@gmail.com does not belong to the company that spammed me.

With all of this, if anyone actually falls for this spam, I’m half-convinced they deserve to be parted with their money.
