Yesterday I went to the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City with an anthropology class from the Seminary. It’s a great place to learn about Mexican culture and history. Here are some shots I got while there.

Interesting English translation

My Spanish is far from perfect. so I can understand having a few grammatical errors when translating something. But someone in marketing should have checked the English translation on this pack of screws that I used yesterday. I guess the word “with” is very difficult to spell if you speak English as your second language.

Snow in Mexico City

Well, it’s not snowing in the city, but there is snow on the mountains. Today on the way to work, I noticed that there was snow on one of the mountains. Not one of the super high altitude volcanoes (although there is snow on them, too). I took a picture from the bridge by my office, but you can’t really see it all that well. (NOTE: I’m pretty sure this picture IS of a volcano. I think it’s Ajusco, a volcano in the south of the city. I’ve never seen this one from the north of the city before)

It has something to do with the fact that the rain washed everything away and the air seems clearer than normal, but today I feel like new mountains have appeared overnight with a little snow on the top. It’s pretty nice.

Life sized Replica of Tenochtitlan

I just read today that they are going to build a life-sized replica of the great Tenochtitlan (Spanish link) in the municipality of Huixquilucan. It’s going to be huge — taking up more than a square mile. And it’s going to be expensive, costing around 3 billion dollars.

In the 15th Century, Tenochtitlan was the main city in the Aztec Empire that is now Mexico City. It was the grand city that Hernan Cortez conquered in 1521.

I’m excited about the construction of the replica. I think it will help us understand what this city was like before the conquest.

Mexico in the 2010 Winter Olympics

In case you were wondering, Mexico does have some representation in the 2010 Winter Olympics. They will be competing in Men’s Ice Hockey and in Alpine Skiing. They’ve never won a medal at the Winter Olympics, and it seems, there will be very little television coverage here. Maybe they’ll show their hockey team’s games.

NOTE: It looks like the hockey team didn’t make it to the Olympics. I don’t know what happened, but they weren’t there. Mexico’s only hope is in Alpine Skiing.

Volcanoes on a clear day

Popocatapetl and Iztaccihuatl are the second and third highest mountains in Mexico, respectively, and are located about 43 miles southeast of Mexico City. From where we are located in the Northwestern part of the city, you can only see them about 2 weeks out of the year, due to the fact that you usually have to look through a thick cloud of smog as you look past downtown.

Today (Sunday), however, was one of the clearest days in Mexico City since we moved here 6 years ago. You could see both of the volcanoes clearly. I shot this from the foot bridge in front of the seminary on my Kodak Zi8 (Amazon affiliate link).
