The next lecture is by Sarah Pearson on The History and Buildings of the Medieval Port of Sandwich. This is on Thursday 11th April at 8pm in Charing Parish Hall.

The society welcomes members from Charing and surrounding parishes. Currently it has about 100 members. From September to April, talks are organised on historical topics of local, regional or national interest, usually given by experts in the field. In addition there is a Christmas Social evening, and in May an AGM plus a short talk. Meetings take place in Charing parish hall at 8pm on the second Thursday of the month. In the early summer an outing is organised to a place or places of interest (Cadman Event).

On occasion specialist study groups are set up; at present there is the Census Group, they have completed 1901 and are now undertaking the 1911 census; another is the WW1 group, where they are gathering as much material as possible on the lives of local residents in the Great War. Cadnam Event 2013 - Saturday May 18th, 9am to approx. 5.45pm. £17members/£20non-members.
Following a talk by Dr Timothy Brittain-Catlin on How Pugin Changed English Houses we will visit St Augustine's Church and The Grange, Ramsgate. Augustus Pugin bought the land on the West Cliff in 1841 and designed the house to have good views of the sea and the church next door. We can see over the whole house and will have guided tours of the church. There will then be 2 hours free time in Ramsgate for lunch (not included) with drop off and pick up by the Maritime Museum, which some might like to visit independently.
We then take the coach to RAF Spitfire & Hurricane Memorial Museum at Manston, to see the aircraft and the Battle of Britain Memorial Museum. Finally, Monkton WI is providing a cream tea and homemade cakes.

Anyone also born in 2003 can send us their story of the most exciting thing happening in their young life. It could be something very specially you learned, someone very special (or famous) you met, something spectacular you saw or something extraordinarily you made. Or perhaps the best day in your life was when you won .......

Tell us all about it in a letter - between 200 - 1000 words - and the best 10 stories will be joined with our own special memories over these 10 years and turned into a booklet (kindle version) to be published in July 2013. All the winners' names will be on the "cover" of this 10 year Wood You Like booklet.

This year's Cadman Event, will be on Saturday 18th May, when we will visit Pugin's The Grange and St Augustine's Church at Ramsgate.
