There is no place for Shoaib Akhtar in the ICC Champions Trophy

I can not see any of the possibility for Pakistan’s controversial fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar to be selected in the ICC Champion Trophy squad. Iqbal Qasim, chief selector, has showed his reluctance to select Shoaib Akhtar. It should be very hard task for Shoaib to get a place in the team through wild card. According to a statement given by Iqbal Qasim, it is clear that he will have to follow a strict process of getting chance from the pre-announced side. However, there is still an opportunity for Shoaib Akhtar because he has not completely ruled out. He even did not get chance in the 30-man preliminary squad of Pakistan team. He last played against Australia in UAE. It seems that Mohammad Asif will be considered for the national team despite his fault.

Do you know Andrew Caddick? He is the former Somerset and England fast bowler. Now, this veteran player will take retirement from cricket at the end of the season. This 40-year-old player made his debut for Somerset 18 years ago. He played 62 Test matches and 54 one-day internationals. He has taken 234 wickets at an average of 29.91. He also claimed 69 wickets in ODI cricket. He is eight in the list of all time England Test wicket-takers. However, in his long career he made many records in first class cricket. He became one of the six current players to take 1000 first class wickets in 2005.

I think Andrew Caddick has taken good decision at the right time. It is true he has become aged and after few years he will not be able to play cricket anymore because cricketers need much strength and energy. Now, we have to wait to see when he will announce his retirement.

New Zealand Selectors Named 30-men Preliminary Champions Trophy Squad

New Zealand selectors named the 30-men preliminary squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2009 which will kick off in September in South Africa. The final squad will be announced on August 23 when New Zealand A team will be visiting sub-continent. Star pacer Shane Bond has been included in the squad and this is the biggest surprise in the selection. The pacer terminated its contract with rebel cricket league ICL recently and is now eligible to come back to international cricket again.

New Zealand selectors would assess six players who will be visiting India with New Zealand A team. In my earlier post, I have mentioned that two players of New Zealand team made their come back in the main squad from rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL). They are Shane Bond and Daryl Tuffey. These two players have been selected in the preliminary squad of New Zealand team which has been announced ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy. ICC Champions Trophy will take place in South Africa this year. New Zealand selectors have announced a 30-man squad for this second biggest and prestigious tournament. New Zealand cricket board recalled them after these two players snapped their tie with rebel ICL. You will be amazed to hear that these two have been drafted for the Twenty20 squad which was announced for Sri Lanka tour. Now, their inclusion will increase New Zealand’s strength.

England and Wales Cricket Board have announced a 30-man preliminary squad ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy including injured player Kevin Pietersen. This potential English batsman has fallen into injury during the Ashes series and has been ruled out of the squad. He is now suffering by his Achilles tendon injury. He will soon go under surgery and it will take 6 weeks to be repaired. It is expected that we can see him to play in the Champions Trophy for England team. India has taken a 2-1 lead over West Indies

India has won the third ODI match against West Indies by 6 wickets which was played at the Beausejour Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia. Skipper MS Dhoni led his team in a rain curtailed game. Winning the match, India took a 2-1 lead of this four-match ODI series. To ensure their first ODI series victory in Caribbean ground, they will have to win one more game.
India won the toss and elected to field first. After being invited to bat first, West Indies scored 186 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. It is sure that three top order batsmen ensured India’s victory. It was not an easy chase because India got victory in the last over. When India came to bat then rain started again and the match was reduced to 22 overs. Both Dinesh Karthik and Gautam Gambhir respectively scored 47 and 44 runs. MS Dhoni remained not out 46 off 34 balls. In his innings, he hit two boundaries and a six.
Now, West Indies will look for the final ODI match to make the series equal. Let us see if MS Dhoni’s fatigue India can snatch the title or not.

The most shocking news is that England’s victory over India threw crushed out the defending champion team from ICC Twenty20 World Cup 2009. They were being beaten by England by three runs. Pakistan captain Younis Khan has said that it was their indiscipline that had cost them the match against Sri Lanka. He pointed out extra runs that Pakistan conceded during the match was the reason behind their defeat. Pakistan conceded 20 extra runs and their defeat margin was 19.

Well, I do not think that Pakistan lost the match only because of giving too many extra runs. No doubt, it was one of the reasons, but I think, their batting was mostly responsible for their 19-run defeat. Pakistan was chasing just 151 runs which, I think, was very much achievable. If Pakistan thinks that they would always be able to restrict the opposition under 150, then it would be a big mistake for the Pakistan side. If Pakistan wants to go anywhere close to their success in the inaugural tournament, they must need to feel confident in chasing targets around 150.

Pakistan has a number of good batsmen in Younis Khan, Kamran Akmal, Salman Butt, Shoaib Malik, Misbah-ul-Haq and Shahid Afridi. Fawad Alam played against Sri Lanka, even though he could make any impact on the game. I think, Pakistan would play all rounder Abdul Razzaq to boost up their batting line up. In that case, I think, Fawad or Sohail Tanvir could make way for Razzaq.

New Zealand has been in excellent form of recent as they defeated Ireland by 83 runs in the first game. However, they have some injury concerns. First of all, opener Jesse Ryder has been ruled out of the tournament as he has been suffering from a virus. Captain Daniel Vettori has not played any game in the tournament, while Ross Taylor is now struggling with hamstring injury. Naturally, New Zealand squad might have lost some strength and this is really a big blow for the Kiwis.

However, they have some excellent players like stand-in captain Brendon McCullum, Jacob Oram, Scott Styris etc. New Zealand got an excellent opener in Aaron Redmond who blasted a 30-ball 63 with 13 boundaries against Ireland in their first match of Super Eight.

It seems that Australian all rounder Andrew Symonds has chosen his own fate. Recently, this 34-year-old player has been withdrawn from central contract offer. This decision has come after he was sent home from Twenty20 World Cup for disciplinary reasons. He had been taken in Australia squad as the replacement of Shaun Tait for 2009-10 in the contracted players list. He had been suspected after going to a nearer bar to celebrate Queensland's win in the rugby league State-of-Origin series opener. It is heard that he did not inform anything to manager about it. It was not new for Symonds. I think Symonds will think about his stupid behave. You should know that he has already earned bad boy title. Now, if he continues breaching conduct then Australian cricket board should bound to eliminate him for ever.
Andrew Symonds is a veteran player. He will be followed by more fans. So, I would like to suggest him not to do any work that creates any bad picture in the mind of fans. ICL will survive long time?

It seems that Indian Cricket League (ICL) is passing tough time. This unsanctioned rebel league is struggling to survive their existence. However, they are vowing to make strong come back and carry on this league despite any problem. You should know that BCCI told that they will not leave any stone unturned to make ICL unpopular. To make their demand fulfill, BCCI has started lifting ban over ICL players. They have already lifted ban over 79 players. In some media coverage, I have heard that some players are reluctance to join American Premier League (APL).

ICL members are not worried about it. They have only 40 or 50 players in their last. They may include more players and it should not be tough work for them. ICL was two years old baby in cricket world. Some famous people joined this tournament. Let us see how they can face this tough situation.
