CHABOT COLLEGE POWER PLANT TASKFORCE CONTACTS: Diane Zuliani, Art History Instructor, DZuliani@chabotcollege.edu, (510) 723-6838. Alisa Klevens, English Instructor, AKlevens@chabotcollege.edu, (510) 723-6811.
Chabot College to Protest Power Plant in May 5 Noon Walk Out

(Hayward, CA) – Chabot College will hold a Walk Out on Thursday, May 5, at noon, at the campus’s Grand Court to demonstrate protest of Calpine Corporation’s plans to build a power plant in the nearby Russell City area of Hayward.

Chabot College Power Plant Taskforce members urge people to attend the Walk Out and learn more about this issue. “We invite everyone who cares about our environment – friends, coworkers, neighbors, classmates, teachers, and families – to join together in protest of Calpine’s power plant in Hayward,” said English Instructor Alisa Klevens.

“We encourage everyone to walk out to Chabot College, to stand together to protect the health of our already-threatened environment,” said Art History Instructor Diane Zuliani. She noted that a Facebook page has been created to provide further information about the event: www.facebook.com/chabotpowerplanttaskforce.

“The proposed Russell City power plant has potentially devastating environmental implications for Chabot and, as such, is an issue our community needs to know about,” said Clara McLean, Ph.D., Instructor of English/Service-Learning. Following is a statement from the Chabot College Power Plant Taskforce provided by McLean:

“The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District has been actively promoting the ‘greening’ of our colleges. However, even as we strive to lessen our environmental impact, we find ourselves ensnared in a struggle with Calpine, a Texas-based energy company in the process of building a highly polluting natural-gas plant right on the Hayward shoreline, a mile downwind from the Chabot College Campus. Though it promotes itself as environmentally friendly, this plant will in fact spew massive amounts of pollutants into the air in an area already environmentally stressed by the intersection of three major freeways.

Hayward’s largely working class, minority community, and the 11,000 students who attend Chabot, many of them the first in their families to attend college, are poised to be the ground-zero targets of the ammonia, particulate matter, and other toxins generated by this plant.

“The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District, Chabot College students, staff and faculty, along with a number of community and social justice organizations, have been fighting this plant in the courts for years; Calpine, though, has seemingly inexhaustible resources to press its case for what promises to be a highly profitable plant. Incidentally, it is our understanding that none of the power generated by the plant will actually serve the Hayward community – it will be used by the wealthier communities across the bay in San Mateo and San Francisco counties. But the pollution will stay here, on the other side of the proverbial tracks, adding to the environmental burden already being borne disproportionately by residents of poor, working-class and minority neighborhoods in the East Bay.

“It’s a heartbreaking contradiction. As Chabot College, an already underfunded public college, does its best to enter the ‘green’ era of the 21st century, our efforts are being undermined by good old 20th Century ‘business as usual.’ Polluting, non-renewable energy is certainly NOT the wave of the future. But working class and minority communities, even here in the relatively enlightened Bay Area, may have to live with it for years to come. Children stand to be the most highly impacted by the plant, and there are numerous schools, preschools and daycare centers within a three mile radius of the plant, not to mention residents’ homes.”

For more information about Chabot College and to view directions and a map of the campus, please visit the website at www.chabotcollege.edu.

Chabot College is a community college offering more than 100 degree and certificate programs throughout the year.
MEDIA INVITATION

Tesla Motors to Visit Chabot College Hybrid Auto Tech Class

WHO: You – sitting in a Tesla roadster and possibly riding along for a test drive.

WHAT: Tesla Motors reps will visit the Chabot College Hybrid Auto Technology class to show Tesla’s roadster electric sports cars and demonstrate their diagnostic tools. “They are visiting to support the new Hybrid Vehicle courses here at Chabot and convey the importance to our students to become capable and competent in these new technologies,” said Instructor Kurt Shadbolt.

WHEN: Tuesday, April 5, 1 p.m. to about 3 p.m.

WHERE: Chabot College, Hayward, CA; Automotive Laboratory Room 1426, Building 1400 Technology Center. Map and Directions: http://www.chabotcollege.edu/about/CampusMap.cfm

WHY: This current spring semester, Chabot College introduced a new eight-week Hybrid Vehicle Operation and Servicing course – making the college an area educational leader offering the latest technology for the newest hybrid cars.

Chabot College, in partnership with City College of San Francisco, has been awarded a U.S. Department of Energy grant to fund seminars and support the college’s efforts to develop hybrid vehicle curriculum for community colleges, high school and ROP programs, and the automotive industry.

Shadbolt explained that one of the most critical considerations in hybrid car repair is safety. “Working on high voltage systems – many are over 200 volts – potentially can be deadly,” he said. He noted that unique to hybrid car repair are the electric drive systems that are part of the “hybrid drive,” batteries, electric motors, and electronic controls.

The Chabot College Automotive Program provides training to understand, diagnose, and repair today’s vehicles. Students learn basic theory of operation, followed by hands on experience in a state-of-the-art repair facility with current industry grade equipment. Students train side by side with apprentices from local dealerships that partner exclusively with Chabot College to train their apprentices.

Job opportunities include automotive technician, parts counter person, and service writer. Students also take classes to understand and repair their own vehicles. Evening and day classes allow students flexibility and accommodate working schedules. Tuition currently is $26 per unit; financial aid information is available.

CONTACT: For more information, please visit the Chabot College Automotive Technology website at http://www.chabotcollege.edu/auto/ or contact Instructor Kurt Shadbolt, (510) 723-7067, kshadbolt@chabotcollege.edu. Everyone will gather in the Cesar Chavez Courtyard at 9:00 AM to complete forms, get their wristbands, complimentary bottle of water and package of cheese/cracker snacks, and complimentary signs (we will have enough for approximately 300 people). Everyone will be required to sign two forms in order to participate in the march: 1) Release of Liability Waiver and 2) Participant Agreement Form.

PARADE ROUTE
We will be marching on the sidewalks of Hesperian, Blvd., Winton Avenue and onto City Hall, which is located at 777 B Street. The route is slightly over 3 miles in each direction. There are NO public bathrooms along the way, so we highly encourage people to “go before we go”. There are, however, public restrooms available when we arrive at City Hall.

LUNCH ON YOUR OWN
We will be at City Hall from approximately 11:30 – 1:30. We will listen to the speaker(s) who have agreed to speak to us. There will also be a short time for lunch on your own. You may either bring your own lunch or visit one of the food vendors nearby. The Google map linked below will provide you with names and locations of restaurants nearby:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=restaurants&f=l&hl=en&sll=37.671796,-122.0857&sspn=0.004458,0.011362&ie=UTF8&t=h&rq=1&ev=zi&radius=0.37&split=1&hq=restaurants&hnear=&ll=37.671721,-122.085561&spn=0.003153,0.005681&z=18

REGROUPING AND DEPARTURE
If you do decide to leave City Hall for lunch, be sure to return to the rotunda (podium area) by 1:30 PM so that we can march back together as a group to make a powerful and peaceful statement with our unified numbers. We anticipate that we should be back to the Chabot campus around 2:30 PM.

RETURN ALL SIGNS/STICKS
Please be sure to return all signs and sticks to the ASCC Office (Rm. 2311) so that we can recycle them for our next march. The sticks cost some money and we will need them for the next peaceful demonstration.

ASSISTANCE
If, at any time, you require assistance or first aid, be sure to see one of the people wearing an orange or yellow vest. We will have radios, telephones, and first-aid kits with us during this march. There will also be police officers along the march making sure that we arrive at our destinations safely. Please respect and follow their instructions since they are there for our benefit and at our request to help us fight budget cuts.
