The Roundhouse in London was the perfect venue for last night's audio-visual book event for Manchester: Looking for the Light through the Pouring Rain by Kevin Cummins. There was a notable absentee in the form of a certain Mr Noel Gallagher but there was a notable substitute in the form of Stephen Morris. Paul Morley, having originally thought he was going to get out of hosting duties was called on to resume this familiar role.

The evening began with a 20-minute presentation of Kevin Cummins's photos set to original music by Graham Massey (Biting Tongues, 808 State) which set the evening off on the right note.

Paul Morley then steered a lively panel and audience discussion session which touched on influences, Manchester, architecture and fantasy bands.

Stephen Morris observed that Kevin Cummins had single-handedly romanticised Manchester the way it's never been romanticised before. That, and he made Joy Division look like they came from Eastern Europe...

On those famous "snow photos" Kevin reminisced that he feared that by setting the band so far away in the shot with the Manchester landscape in the background he feared that the best the shots would get in the NME would be that the Top 50 singles would be listed over the foreground. Fortunately the shots were used unfettered at first and it wasn't until Christmas that the Top 50 singles were added.

Afterwards Messrs Cummins, Morris and Morley signed copies of the book which was being sold in the foyer.

The Kevin Cummins tour continues on 21 November in Den Haag, 22 November in Antwerp (both with Paul Morley), comes back to London on 1 December at the Cochrane Theatre, London (with Paul Morley, Mike Pickering and Bez) before the year's events finish at A Factory Night (And then again) at Plan K, Brussels on 12 December.

Happy Mondays Versus Cancer

Back by popular demand and fresh from their US tour, Happy Mondays are the latest addition to the line-up for Versus Cancer on Saturday 12 December 2009 which already includes Snow Patrol, James' Tim Booth, Jim Glennie, and Larry Gott, Andy Rourke, Peter Hook and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. More acts are to be announced.

Money raised will go towards helping cancer patients in the region.

Credit To The Edit Vol 2

Whilst Credit To The Edit Volume 1, bar a couple of exceptions, focused solely on tracks originally released in the 70's and 80's, with Credit To The Edit Vol 2, Greg Wilson brings things right up to date, with two thirds of the album made up of recordings from recent years, all of which have done the business for todays clubs. Volume 1 connected the past to the present, Volume 2 provides a perfect illustration of how the present is being shaped by the past, with artists from both sides of the Atlantic taking their inspiration from the type of music highlighted in the first volume, neatly serving to bring the project full circle in the process.

Macclesfield Museum is currently searching for interesting Joy Division artefacts for a proposed exhibition due to take place in May 2010. The Curator of the exhibition is Jon Savage.

New BBC4 documentary about British synthpop features New Order, OMD and Cabaret Voltaire

"In the late 1970s, small pockets of electronic artists including the Human League, Daniel Miller and Cabaret Voltaire were inspired by Kraftwerk and JG Ballard and dreamt of the sound of the future against the backdrop of bleak, high-rise Britain. The crossover moment came in 1979 when Gary Numan's appearance on Top of the Pops with Tubeway Army's Are "Friends" Electric? heralded the arrival of synthpop. Four lads from Basildon known as Depeche Mode would come to own the new sound whilst post-punk bands like Ultravox, Soft Cell, OMD and Yazoo took the synth out of the pages of the NME and onto the front page of Smash Hits. By 1983, acts like Pet Shop Boys and New Order were showing that the future of electronic music would lie in dance music."

Synth Britannia screens on Friday 16 October 2009 on BBC4 and includes contributions from Philip Oakey, Vince Clarke, Martin Gore, Bernard Sumner, Gary Numan and Neil Tennant.

There was good turnout for Hooky's book signing session to promote The Hacienda: How Not To Run A Club at the resurrected Fopp on Earlham Street on Friday evening. With the man himself (accompanied by Kevin Cummins and a few Hacienda art prints) being fashionably late there were approaching 100 people in the top-floor queue by the time he arrived. And by the time he left the evening had been so successful that there were no copies of the book left!

The following morning Hooky made an appearance on Soccer AM which he regaled with several FAC/football anecdotes including the one about the aborted World In Motion 2002.

Then it was off further westwards to Bristol for another signing session. And this Thursday he may be found at the Off The Shelf festival in Sheffield for a Q&A and DJ set.

Cerysmatic attended the London book launch for Manchester: Looking for the Light through the Pouring Rain by Kevin Cummins on Thursday 1 October 2009 at the Amuti Gallery near Russell Square in London.

A good crowd including Mike Pickering, Mark Farrow, Paul Morley, Richard Boon, Pete Shelley, Noel Gallagher and Gonnie Rietveld celebrated the culmination of five years hard work in style.

Thanks to Kevin Cummins, Richard Boon, Paul Morley and Pete Shelley for collectively making the draw for the winner of the recent Kevin Cummins competition (commemorative pic included).

Congratulations to Richard Shepherd who wins a copy of the book together with a set of posters. Thanks for all your many entries. The answers were: 1. b. Paul Morley, 2. The author is of course a fan of Manchester City FC and 3. Buzzcocks (Nov 77).
