I have been so busy working to keep my little school afloat during extremely tough economic times. With Sallie Mae's decision to quit lending to students of small massage schools like mine to the catastrophic global economy, it is not a small miracle that we are still here. Enrollment numbers dropped drastically for a couple of our classes, but even that did not stop us. I poured my life savings into my school with the faith that we would survive and find new ways to bring in new students for the education and experience they wanted and deserved.

Last March, when I learned that Sallie Mae would quit lending, I launched a campaign to become a full-fledged Title IV school. I was able to achieve this because the school is already accredited, which is one of the qualifications for application. Becoming a Title IV school means that we can accept students through Federal financial aid, including Pell grants, Stafford Loans and other great financial options for students. The task was costly, both monetarily and physically. Just the extensive financial audits took a period of weeks, and the detailed data and paperwork that was required was astounding. But we persevered, and last July, we were granted our Title IV school approval.

Since July, we also launched a fully automated on-line Virtual Financial Aid Office to handle the entire Financial Aid process for our students. While our dedicated staff provide general guidance as our students go through this process, we have an entire company working for us to do all the actual processing of the applications and they are responsible for the packaging of loans and grants for our students, and makes sure they receive the best possible combination of Federal Financial Aid.

We have seen a tremendous upturn in our admissions applications and enrollments for our Fall class. Our Winter class is two-thirds full already, and we still have many weeks to continue to receive applications. Our maximum capacity for our Winter class is 64 (2 classes of 32). Based on the data we are seeing, we will easily have waiting lists for our classes next year. So, if you are reading this, and planning on attending our program, please submit your application early.

It is amazing how the universe works. When the economy and banking industry collapsed, it was imminent that we would collapse right along with them. So many business and schools have. But it didn't happen this way. With the right heart and the right intentions, intuition played a big part in the decision to go out on a limb and risk everything to survive, and survive we did. The school has never had a brighter outlook, better energy or a more enthusiastic team of talented staff members. They were fighting for their life and well being just as much as I was. And as a whole, we all made it.

I am grateful to God, to my amazing staff and to my keen instincts that we survived this crisis, and look into the future with hope, determination and pride knowing we will be able to continue to send wonderful new healing-arts practitioners out into the world and make it a better place for everyone they touch.
Center for Massage & Natural Health-Asheville, North Carolina. I always have. The more automated and streamlined something can become, the happier and more secure I am, as a consumer and as a business owner.

As a business owner, this week I will be unveiling our new Virtual Financial Aid Office for our staff and students. This virtual office will enable students from around the globe to apply for Federal Financial Aid to come to our massage school in Asheville. Unlike traditional college financial aid offices, one does not need an appointment, nor does one need to stand in line for hours waiting for their turn with the financial aid counselor to help them with the process.

At CFMNH, we have opted to use technology to make the process of applying for Federal Financial Aid a much easier and fully automated experience. And our students will have the ability to correspond with our Financial Aid Representative via email, and receive a response to any questions within 24 hours.

If a student does not have a computer, they are always welcome to come in and use ours after they have applied for admission into our school.

As a consumer, I LOVE being able to handle all my needs and affairs online. I can sit in my pajamas with a cup of coffee (as I am doing this moment!) and take care of all the many details of my life without ever having to go anywhere but the local market or restaurants when I don't feel like cooking. So, for me, having something like a Virtual Financial Aid Office to go to, rather than having to travel, wait in lines, go back and forth if I don't have all the information I need to complete the application, wait for counselors to put together financial packages for me...I am a very happy girl.

I know our students will benefit greatly in the CFMNH's innovative and state-of-the-art virtual world while they prepare to come to school here. Our Virtual Financial Aid Office will help bring them one step closer to achieving their educational and career dreams!

Posted by Peggy M. Employment in health care is expected to grow by three million jobs between 2006 and 2016. Currently, seven of the twenty fastest growing occupations are health care related. As more massage therapists work in health care settings, and more consumers look at massage therapy as a part of health care, growth in the health care sector will significantly impact the future of massage therapy.

The growth in health care is providing jobs for massage therapists
From 2005 to 2006, the percentage of massage therapists who worked in a health care environment increased from 10 to 13 percent. In 2008, that number increased to 27 percent. This trend is only expected to grow.

According to the 2008 AMTA Industry Survey results, many massage therapists currently earn additional income from jobs in health care:
*58 percent of massage therapists have another job beyond massage therapy.
*35 percent of those therapists work in a health care position.

This makes health care the number one profession massage therapists work in beyond massage.

Some massage therapists are transitioning into other health care careers
Even though massage is growing, the health care industry is growing at a faster rate. Because of this, massage therapists are being recruited to nursing schools, physical therapy programs, and other health care careers. In interviews with massage therapists who’ve left the profession, we found that some are pursuing careers in nursing or other health care professions. In fact, we have heard from many former AMTA members who were actively recruited by hospitals or nursing schools to change careers.

Posted by Peggy M. During the recession of 2001-2002 schools of all types, including massage schools, saw an increasing enrollment. With the current recession, this is not the case.

One reason that schools are struggling to increase enrollments is the lack of availability of credit in the form of government loans, grants, and privately funded school loans. Over 40 percent of massage school administrators stated that it is more difficult for students to receive financial aid than in year’s past.

According to the December 22, 2008 issue of Business Week, there has even been a 2 percent drop in graduate degrees, which increased dramatically during past recessions.

As a direct result, the number of new graduates coming out of massage therapy programs declined from 2007 to 2008. According to the 2007 AMTA Massage School Survey, the average number of graduates of 500-plus hour massage schools was approximately 49.5 graduates per year. In 2008, that number dropped to 43.8 graduates per year. This corresponds with observations made by school administrators (in surveys and at the COS 2008 Leadership Conference) about declining enrollment and graduation numbers.

While getting ready to graduate, some students may find it difficult to find a job in massage therapy, or find a job that will support their practice until they can build up a client base. This is one of the major reasons why new therapists leave the profession.

Roughly 31 percent of schools have a formal placement program for graduates. In these schools, over 80 percent of graduates find employment in massage therapy after graduation. Roughly 58 percent of schools provide only a job board or book that students can use to look for jobs, and about 10 percent of schools do not offer placement services at all.

I am happy to report that the CFMNH has successfully weathered the storm and we continue to exceed in graduating wonderful new therapists. Our lifetime job placement program helps to keep our graduates working and happy. We will also be able to offer financial aid and grants to our new students in the very near future.

Posted by Peggy M. You can do it at home each morning, and reap the benefits of this luxurious therapy all day long.

Ayurvedic texts list a wide range of benefits from regular performance of the warm oil full-body massage:

It helps pacify Vata dosha. Because of our hectic 24/7 lives, most of us have high levels of stress, anxiety, a feeling of being overwhelmed and spaced-out, all indications of an aggravated Vata dosha. Soothing touch is very Vata-pacifying. Warm oil, being warm, smooth and unctuous, is also Vata-pacifying.

The massage also helps balance Kapha dosha. It enhances circulation throughout the body and revitalizes a lethargic body and mind.

With regular performance of the massage, deep-seated toxins in the joints and tissues are loosened and released into the system for elimination through the natural toxin-release processes. Toxins in the skin are also released, leaving you with clear healthy skin.

Your skin will look beautiful with regular massage. It will stay moisturized and nourished, and look supple and lustrous.

Abhyanga helps strengthen and tone the muscles. If you work out several times a week or everyday, you’ll notice that your muscles are much stronger and resilient to injury.

The Ayurvedic texts recommend that the massage be done in the morning. It helps keep energy levels high during the day and helps promote easy, restful sleep at night.

The warm oil massage, by balancing Prana Vata, helps calm the mind and nervous system. You’ll feel more rested and calm, but focused and alert.

The massage also helps promote balanced emotions. You will feel serene and settled—the kind of bliss that you get with regular meditation.

Your joints will stay nourished and supple with regular performance of Abhyanga. The warm oil massage strengthens and lubricates the joints, making them more resilient to wear and tear.

The massage makes you feel youthful and vital. The ancient texts state that regular performance of Abhyanga retards the aging process.

Choosing Your Massage Oil

While the massage is healing even when performed with just a base massage oil such as sesame oil or almond oil, ayurvedic practitioners typically infuse the base oils with nourishing herbs and flowers. You’ll find ayurvedic herbs such as Brahmi, Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Shankhapushpi and Turmeric in traditional ayurvedic massage oils. The herbs are gently cooked into the oils for a specified period of time, and the oil is then strained for use. Aromatherapy massage oils incorporate healing essences such as Sandalwood, Jasmine and Rose for added emotional and mental balance. Look for cold-pressed organic base oils for maximum benefit. Sesame oil has antioxidant properties and is anti-inflammatory. Almond oil is both nourishing and soothing. Coconut oil is cooling and Pitta-pacifying.

Instructions for performing the warm oil massage

Materials: 2-3 oz massage oil suited to your needs for balance, plastic squeeze bottle, pot of very warm water, old cotton towel or mat, paper towels.

Step 1. Pour the oil into the squeeze bottle and shut bottle tightly.

Step 2. Place the bottle in the warm water for 5 minutes or until the oil heats up to comfortably warm.

Step 3. Stand on your towel or mat in a comfortably warm, draft-free room.

Step 4. Squeeze the oil a little at a time into your palm and apply the oil to your body, working systematically down until your entire body is anointed with oil.

Step 5. Next, massage the oil into your skin, giving each part of your body adequate attention. Use up and down strokes over limbs and circular strokes over joints, chest and abdomen. Apply lighter pressure over chest and abdomen than over extremities. This process should take about 10-12 minutes.

Step 6. If massaging your scalp, apply oil to the crown of the head and then work the oil into your scalp with your fingers in outward circles.

Step 7. Sit quietly with eyes closed for 5 minutes, breathing deeply.

Step 8. Pat excess oil, if any, off with paper towels.

Step 9. Take a warm bath or shower, being very careful not to slip. Wipe excess oil off your feet before stepping off the towel or mat. Use a very gentle, non-soap cleanser and a gentle shampoo.

Step 10. Pat your skin with a towel and apply moisturizing lotion or a gentle natural dusting powder.

Note: The towels and mats you stand on for abhyanga will get stained and eventually oil-saturated, so use old ones and do not put them in washing machines or dryers. They should be periodically thrown away and replaced.

Disclaimer: This information is educational and is not intended to replace standard medical care or advice.

About The Author:

Shreelata Suresh is a yoga instructor from the Bay Area. Most people now recognize that there is absolutely nothing that man can do to our food without ruining it. The best food on the planet is that which has grown naturally for thousands of years.

The very same goes for what we put onto our skin. Coconut oil is perhaps nature's most perfect moisturizer, and has been used since the beginning of time for its beautifying properties. Women in countries where coconuts grow have been lavishing their skin with coconut butter to both smooth and protect.

Naturally Protective

Most skin creams on the market actually do more harm than good because they are full of chemicals that may make your skin look nice in the short term, but will cause damage long term. Coconut oil is nature's finest moisturizer, full of goodness that will truly nourish and make your skin beautiful long term.

Coconut oil is packed with natural antioxidants and is especially useful in fighting free-radicals, as it is unrefined and hasn't been stripped of any of its natural components through the refining process. These protect the skin from the environment and other toxins that cause damage and aging. It is the ultimate anti-wrinkle cream.

Truly PH Balancing

I have heard many commercials claiming their products balance the PH of the skin. Personally, I don't believe that anything that is not completely natural will balance our PH. We all know now that ready made meals and man made chemicals are highly acidic when we eat them. Only pure organic fruits and vegetables will help us become more alkaline and balance our PH internally. Why on earth would we believe that what we put on our skin is any different?

Coconut oil balances our PH naturally. In fact, coconut oil has the same PH as our natural skin oils.

Highly Absorbent for Smooth, Protected Skin

Another thing I love about coconut oil is the fact that although it is rich and creamy, it gets absorbed by the skin very quickly, so my skin doesn't feel greasy for very long, as it does with many other natural and organic skin creams and potions. This is because the small molecular structure of coconut oil allows for easy absorption through the skin, giving it a soft, smooth texture. Coconut oil penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin and strengthens the underlying tissues.

Another benefit of coconut oil's small structure is that it is absorbed into the skin and into the cell structure of the connective tissues, limiting the damage excessive sun exposure can cause. Coconut oil is actually considered a natural sun screen! Since more and more studies are showing that sunscreen is highly toxic, we need to move forward in looking for new ways to protect our skin!

Coconut oil not oil smooths and protects, it also repairs the skin. It aids in removing the outer layer of dead skin cells, making the skin smoother. The skin becomes more evenly textured with a healthy glow.

About the author

Sheryl is a kinesiologist, nutritionist and holistic practitioner.
Her website www.younglivingguide.com provides the latest research on preventing disease, looking naturally gorgeous, and feeling emotionally and physically fabulous. If you knew that just three tablespoons of a saturated fat would positively benefit your current health condition, would you take those three tablespoons of medicine?

The Secret Fountain of Youth

The secret Fountain of Youth, of health and longevity, has been located. No, it`s not actually water, but the fountain-like tree of the Coconut Palm or Cocos nucifera, which is a member of the Arecaceae family. This family also includes the famous acai fruit, dates, and other drupe fruits which are popular in tropical and subtropical regions.

Many common products and foods are derived from the palm family. In fact, all through history palms have become symbols of life, victory, peace, fertility, and sustenance. The Coconut Palm, in particular, is often called the tree of life in the many cultures which rely on it for sustenance. Virtually every part of the Coconut Palm is used for something - from roof thatch to boats, from clothing to firewood, from garden mulch to a variety of culinary uses. In Sanskrit the name is kalpa vriksha, which means "the tree which provides all the necessities of life." While those in Malay refer to it as pokok seribu guna, or "tree of a thousand uses." In the Philippines, the coconut is affectionately termed "The Tree Of Life."

Wherein Coconut is The Main Course

If a person were to take a look at the countries in which coconut oil and milk were staples of the diet, they would notice that those who have not adopted any part of a western diet are beautiful and robust. If you were to take a trip to Sri Lanka, where coconut products are used in every meal and the population consumes an average of 120 coconuts per year, you would notice the health and fitness of the inhabitants. A little more research would show you that merely one or two deaths of every 1,000 are contributed to heart disease, compared to heart disease in America, which contributes to nearly half of all deaths.

Other countries which rely heavily on coconut include most parts of India, the Philippines, and most islands of the Pacific. You would notice that these people who have not adopted the modern Western diet - which contains unsaturated margarine and vegetable oils - and who consume this saturated fat of the coconut oil also have low instances of any major illnesses. Heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity and many other common complaints of the Western World are virtually nonexistent. Their secret is coconut oil.

When people of these regions have adopted the Western diet, researchers have found that the instances of these diseases became comparably close to that of Americans. In fact, a major study was performed on the remote islands of Pukapuka and Tokelau. The entire populations of these islands took part in the study. Before the study, coconut oil, milk, and meat was the main staple in the diet contributing to 60% or more of the populations` daily intake of calories from fat, while the American Heart Association only recommends that up to 30% of daily calories consumed come from fat and that no more than 10% of that fat should be saturated.

Despite this recommendation, those populations were consuming 50% of their calories are from saturated fat from coconut products. Yet, these people showed no evidence of heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, cancer, or any other immunological or degenerative disease common in the Western World. In fact, atherosclerosis and arthritis were not even heard of!

When researchers had half the population in the study begin eating a Western diet, they began to develop the disease found in the Western world within days to weeks of adopting the new Western diet. When they returned to their traditional coconut-based diet, the diseases disappeared.

The Right Kind of Fat

Make no mistake; this article is not discussing hydrogenated coconut oil. Refined and/or hydrogenated coconut oil, just like other refined or hydrogenated oils, should never be consumed. Refined or hydrogenated oils of any kind contain harmful metals and toxins as well as nonmetabolizable and indigestible fats, which promote diseases. When you hear reports about studies which claim that coconut oil does raise cholesterol levels and promote heart disease, they are leaving out the crucial point that the study was done with hydrogenated coconut oil.

No, this article is discussing pure, unrefined, organic, coconut oil. Dozens of studies over the past few decades have shown that natural coconut oil, the organic extra virgin kind, has no adverse effects on cholesterol levels. In fact, researchers have found quite the opposite is true. The fact is if unrefined coconut oil was the cause of disease, then these countries which rely heavily on it would show evidence of disease. In reality, quite the opposite is true.

Bad Publicity

Unfortunately, the fallacy of the reported negative research has slipped up many reporters and by and large the misinformed writers, healthcare professionals, and the public. While the reports were accurate, the conveyed information left out that refined and hydrogenated coconut oil was used in the studies, which developed diseases in the participants. This problem is compounded because everybody recites and repeats each others` false statements. If the public and health care professionals were only to read the new research and the full reports, they would find that they were in the dark ages of nutritional knowledge. So, if you hear about negative aspects of coconut oil and product, realize that the person is misinformed and kindly do some research of your own.

On the other hand, research performed with unrefined coconut oils resulted in some amazing findings. People who consumed the unrefined and non-hydrogenated coconut oils were healthier at the end of the study than those who consumed the refined and hydrogenated coconut and/or vegetable oils or a low fat diet. Manufacturers have become so pleased with the health benefits of coconut oil that they have begun to use it as a "secret" ingredient in their baby formulas and adult nutrition formulas used in hospitals for tube feeding. Research has now confirmed that coconut oil is one of the most nutritious and healthful foods available. It is recommended to everyone, including those with health problems, to include unrefined coconut oil into their diets daily.

The Miracle Non-Nut

While coconuts are called nuts, they are not actually nuts. Rather, they are the monocot seed of the palm family. It is rare that anyone has allergies or adverse reactions to the coconut. So rare, in fact, that none have been reported. However, many report the positive reactions they have felt from the coconut. Those who have diabetes have reported lower blood sugar counts. Those which have high cholesterol have reported lowered cholesterol. Those who experience lethargy or low body temperatures have reported their energy levels rising and their body temperature normalizing.

Even those experiencing common addictions have reported quitting smoking and drinking without even realizing it. Those who suffer from obesity have reported a reduction in food cravings and astounding weight-loss of around 2 pounds per week. They claim that the weight melts right off!

How much do you need to take to receive health benefits? The recommended daily dosage is three tablespoons. Of course, you can feel free to take more than that. Coconut oil is heat-stable oil. You can cook with it, fry with it, bake with it and even eat it right out of the jar. It is a delicious butter replacement and melts easily onto your toast. It adds a delicious, light flavor to everything it complements.

Since it is solid at room temperature and liquid at body temperature, it is shelf stable for months, even years, in the right conditions. Unlike other oils, even olive oil, it does not develop cancer-causing chemicals at moderately high heat. So, go ahead, replace your butter and cooking oil. You can even replace your favorite skin cream and lotion. Coconut oil is an excellent moisturizer and provides excellent health benefits both outside and in.

Resources:

1. School administrators estimate that the average student is 30 years old, with 36.6 percent being 25 years old or less.

The percentage of men in massage school is higher than the percentage of male therapist. According to school administrators, roughly 22 percent of massage students are male, compared to 12 percent of practicing massage therapists. Additionally, 24 percent of administrators reported that the percentage of males in school has increased over the past five years, yet the percentage of males practicing massage has declined during this time period.

Students are coming into massage school with different skills. In the 2008 AMTA Massage School Survey, school administrators were asked what skills today’s students are bringing to the classroom compared to year’s past. In response, most mentioned computer and technology skills. Most felt that today’s students were more comfortable with technology, had more experience using technology and were better at finding information and doing research on the Internet.

Posted by Peggy M. Massage therapy used to be a luxury for most people, but as it has become more popular with the general public for its therapeutic affect, business models are changing and adapting to a more main-stream approach.

According to the 2009 AMTA Massage Therapy Industry Report, national massage chains are growing as new players enter this market and current chains expand into new locations. Seeing the growth of spas and the consumer acceptance of massage, these organizations have found a niche in the market — offering a branded product in numerous locations.

As opposed to spas, these companies only offer massage, although some firms are testing locations that offer more traditional spa services in addition. Some massage therapists have a poor view of national massage chains, seeing them as detrimental to the profession. But, as these chains continue to grow, many massage therapists see them as a place to get steady employment and potential benefits.

Because massage therapy is the only service on the menu, national massage chains are able to cut overhead from less profitable services and offer lower cost massage. The number of these firms and the lower prices available could have a significant impact on massage use in the future and employment opportunities.

Currently, only 1 percent of consumers report receiving their last massage at a national massage chain. This number is expected to grow as more chains open, and consumers look for a lower cost massage. Additionally, consumers may not understand the difference between a spa and a national massage chain.

Posted by Peggy M. As I write this post, 20 or so new and nervous students are checking in, collecting their text books. and finding their seat in our freshly painted (with very intentional color schemes) class room. They are likely wondering what it will be like going to massage school at the Center for Massage & Natural Health, and are alive with anticipation and excitement.

Our first day begins with a comprehensive orientation as all the details of our Student Handbook are reviewed, and many questions are asked and answered. Later this morning, they will play a series of "name games" and introductions so that they can begin the journey of learning about one another and about themselves. They will come back after lunch to begin their first Swedish Massage class where our amazing instructor will demonstrate a full treatment session so that our new students will have a taste of what they will be able to do in just a couple of short months.

The day will end with smiles and light conversations with the new bonds that are forming, and a little nervousness when the instructor tells them all to bring massage table sheets with them to class tomorrow!

Have a wonderful day, my new students. You are beginning a 6-month journey that will last a lifetime.

Posted by Peggy M. Needless to say, the essential oils to be used are different too.

Stretch Marks are a common form of scarring that can occur when abdominal skin is overstretched during pregnancy. The following oils are highly effective and beneficial during the second trimester:

Frankincense: Has a peaceful and calming effect on the mind and helps in relieving stress and anxiety. It’s tissue regenerating properties make it very effective in lightening scars and stretch marks.
Lavender: Soothes and calms the nerves; can help prevent and diminish stretch marks.
Sandalwood: Induces a state of mental relaxation and; soothes cracked, chapped and irritated skin; recommended for stretch marks and scars. The product is a combination of the above mentioned essential oils that can be safely used during pregnancy. The benefits of the SERENO Sleep Time Essential Oil can be delivered via various modes.
