Theme Day: Shelter

I slipped across the city limit into Scottsdale for this theme day post after remembering the very unique bus shelters that are located all around the city of Scottsdale. This one is made up of the artistic iron-work and river rocks.

If you need to wait for the bus, it's nice to have some shade to protect you from the sun and these shelters which are all uniquely different make the wait a little more fun.

Idylwilde Park and La Hacienda

I thought I'd close out the month of September with two more historic neighborhoods. I decided to do this project as a summer pastime and here it is swiftly approaching October and I've only covered 20 of the 35 neighborhoods.

This first neighborhood is called Idylwilde Park and it was built in a years old concept of creating a central park and having all the houses back up to the park. That keeps the park private for only the adjoining neighbors to enjoy.

I drove around the two streets several times and couldn't get a glimpse of the park inside but my historic neighborhood documents say it's still there and very much alive. The houses in this neighborhood are Period Revival style small homes.

The next neighborhood is called La Hacienda with homes dating back to 1927. The neighborhood is small and contains both Period Revival and Early Traditional Ranch style homes.

The fully mature landscaping makes this area feel secluded and cooler than the busy high-rise mid-town commercial area that is only a few blocks away.

Garfield and North Garfield

The Garfield neighborhood is an area that is still struggling to make a comeback. It's located just east of downtown Phoenix and is comprised of very small homes some dating back to 1883 but, most from the 20's, 30's and 40's. It was one of the first additions to the original Phoenix town site.
The little house above has been freshly painted and is now ready for some yard work.

The owners of this little bungalow have done quite a bit to enhance the front with plants and planters and even a fountain.

The North Garfield neighborhood is adjacent to the Garfield area and contains similar houses dating back to the early part of the 1900's. The one above has that distinctive Spanish style.

This one is built in the "salt-block" style I've seen in other historic neighborhoods however, this is the only one like this that I saw in the North Garfield area. I recently featured a Phoenix Bird that is located in the Garfield neighborhood. You can see it here.

Rubbish and Fire

On Saturday I located the last three historic neighborhoods that I needed to photograph for my series and one of those neighborhoods was located in an area that was pretty run down. I'll say more about that when I get to that neighborhood in my series. While I was driving around I noticed that there was quite a lot of trash piled up in various places and I realized that it was a neighborhood clean-up project. The city does that in designated areas upon the request of residents and then hauls away all the trash at once.

I decided that since we city daily photo bloggers are always picturing our cities in the best possible light, it doesn't hurt to show some of the less desirable sights. This pile of rubbish was particularly big so I snapped a photo of it.

A little way away from the first shot, I found this house or building all boarded up after what looks like a fire. I hope no one was hurt when that happened.

Exotic Architecture

While searching out some of the historic neighborhoods I've been doing a series about, I found this place with the very exotic architecture.

Once I saw the place, I remembered that I had seen it before but it was many years ago. I learned that it was going to be a Sikh Cultural Center. It was under construction when I first saw it so I didn't take any photos of it at that time. I thought I'd wait and come back when it was done.

Sadly, it still appears to be under construction and frankly it looks much the same as it did when I first saw it all those years ago. I wonder what happened. Maybe it's just a matter of shortage of funds after the recession. It will certainly be a striking looking building when it's completed.

Tiny Poser

Yesterday I was leaving my house to run an errand and as I approached my car I could hear the sound of a humming bird close by. I looked over at a shrub growing by the walk and saw this guy sitting on a branch. My first thought was that I'd never get my camera out in time but, I tried anyway. I had to set down the cold drink I was holding and set down my purse and then get the camera out. The whole time I did all that this little guy held his pose while keeping an eye on me. I popped off 5 shots before he decided that was good enough. I'd say this tiny creature is either a good sport or true ham.

All About Design

Sometimes the oddest things catch my eye or at least that's what my friends tell me when I point something out that no one else has noticed. I was at the Scottsdale Fashion Square mall last week and I happened to take a staircase that very few people ever use. On the landing I spotted this arrangement. It's probably there to add a little pizzaz to a small space but, I found it quite attractive. I took this photo of it and one each of those arrangements on top of the table.

When I left the mall and found myself at a traffic light just outside the parking garage, I decided to snap a photo of this tower structure on the end of the garage. It just houses the stairs that lead to all the floors of the garage but, I think is does a beautiful job of hiding those metal stairs and hand rails.

Stylized Phoenix Bird

Another one of our many Phoenix Birds today. I'll bet that many people who live here don't even realize that this is a depiction of that famous mythical bird. It's a very modern, stylized version that sits in front of a high-rise office building on Central Avenue.

Fairview Place and F Q Story

Two more of our 35 designated Historic Neighborhoods today. Both of these I've featured here before. They were fairly close to my old neighborhood so I drove around in these areas many times. Fairview Place is made up of middle class homes built in the 1930's and 1940's. The one above is in a Spanish style.

This one looks more eastern to me. I do like the front arch and the brick trim.

I've featured homes in the F Q Story neighborhood a few times before. It's a great little neighborhood close to downtown. I love the look of the one above with the awnings and the trim around the entrance.

This one has a little front courtyard and an arched front door. This neighborhood also dates back to the 1930's and 1940's.

Floating

I love to walk one of the trails at the Desert Botanical Garden that goes past the desert lagoon where a little reed and cattail filled pond is alive with all kinds of interesting life. I always stop at the pond and look for the bullfrogs that live there. They aren't easy to spot. I have to really study the water but when I see one then I start to see the others. This one seemed to be looking right at me.

This one was looking the other way. As I walked away they started talking to each other in the deep baritone song they make. My dad used to say it sounded like they were saying "jug-a-rum, jug-a-rum".

Outdoor Exercise

It was nice yesterday morning to see so many people outdoors getting some exercise and fresh air. During the hot summer months, Phoenicians tend to do their exercising indoors where heat stroke is less of a problem. This last week, the mornings and evenings have been nice enough to be out and people were out in force.

I saw cyclists and runners and walkers and shoppers and children playing in playgrounds. We are finally getting our outdoors back!

Living in Phoenix....Las Vegas Style

I was prowling around the neighborhood just to the east of me one Sunday when I discovered this house. It was so large that my wide angle lens couldn't get the whole front of the place in the shot.

The driveway was gated and this huge fountain was just on the other side of the gate with the drive circling around it.

I drove around the block and discovered that the property extended to the next street over and the back of the house was just as elaborate as the front. This pool area made me think of Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Family Dinner....

...it's not what it used to be.

David and I were having dinner one night recently when this family arrived and was seated next to us. They were very quiet and it was easy to see why. Each and every one of them is studying some type of electronic device. The father is hidden by that bottle of wine but, I can vouch for the fact that he too was looking at his cell phone. It was too good of a scene to ignore so I snuck this photo. No one at that table saw me.

The Gradual Cool Down

We had a big rain (and wind) storm last Monday evening and it seemed to tip the scale on our desert heat. We haven't reached the 100F (38C) all week. In fact it's been kind of pleasant. Still too warm to be out in the direct sun mid-day but, the mornings and evenings are nice. I decided to take an evening walk at the Desert Botanical Garden to get some exercise in. The garden was very quiet with only few other people there. I was pleased to see this fishhook barrel cactus in full bloom.

The early evening sun makes some great back lighting to light up all the thorns on a cholla cactus. You don't want to trip a fall into this plant. That would be quite painful.

The Phoenix

Men at Work

Early one morning I saw this guy and his ground team preparing to do some tree trimming. He works for the power company and when the trees get too crowded around the power lines, it's time to trim them back a little. He spotted me with my camera right away so he gave me a big smile and a wave.

You can see from this shot that he was pretty far up there when I zoomed in on him.

And, here he is in the thick of the tree working away. I'm quite sure I couldn't do this job. My fear of heights would kick in and I wouldn't be able to last 10 minutes up there.

Encanto Palmcroft & Encanto Vista

Encanto Palmcroft is probably the historic neighborhood with the highest real estate values. The area is made up of large homes on curving, tree-lined streets with little pocket parks scattered about. It abuts on the south Encanto Park, one of the city's largest and oldest parks. I've cruised around in this area many times and have published photos from this neighborhood several times.

The houses in Encanto Palmcroft are all unique in architectural style with well manicured green yards.

The Encanto Vista neighborhood is also next to Encanto Park and just a few blocks away from the Encanto Palmcroft neighborhood. However, this area consists of more modest homes in size and architecture. The one above is showing it's tidy brick facade.

This one appears to be block construction and has adopted a unique yard style. Those rock-wire walls seem to be very popular right now.

Hollow Eyes

Back in June I posted a mural I found and the artist was there working on it at the time. You can see it here. That mural was on a long wall in a narrow passage way and there was a series of murals all along the wall. This is another one of the murals on that wall. This one is closest to the street so it can be easily seen when driving past. I'm not sure what it represents but the artist is Tyson Krank. His murals tend to depict figures with rather vacant eyes so this one fits his style perfectly.

Patriotic Message

While I was walking among the memorial flags that I posted about yesterday, I noticed across the lake and on the other side of the freeway is this building that houses the headquarters for First Solar. This side of the building is covered with panels and I noticed that they had arranged the panels to spell out USA. I had never seen those panels arranged that way before so I'm assuming it was done in conjunction with the memorial that was going on in the park.

9/11 Tribute

I drove out to Tempe yesterday to see the 9/11 tribute, 2977 flags flying along the Tempe lakefront. It was a very moving experience.

Each flag was adorned with a card with the name of a person who died that day. Some cards just had the name and where the person worked while others had loving comments about the person.

This photo gives an overview of the scene and even this doesn't encompass all of the flags that were out there.

Although it was very moving to walk among the flags, I didn't tear up until this guy played taps. Everyone who was there stopped to look in his direction. I'm glad I went. It was a good way to mark the day.

The Tempe Town Lake is right under the flight path for Sky Harbor International Airport and the majority of morning flights are taking off to the east right over this area. It was sort of a surreal experience to be standing among all those flags while one plane after another roared overhead.

Tomorrow I'll show you what else could be seen from this location.

Big Trees

I've been noticing the shapes and sizes of some trees around town. This one is simply enormous. It pretty much covers the front of that building.

I just liked the shape of this one. It's a little heavier on one side giving it that wind blown look.

Returning to Phoenix

I flew to California last Wednesday but I drove back with Julie and Dave on Monday. Arriving in Phoenix, since I wasn't driving this time it was a perfect opportunity to snap a few shots of the Phoenix downtown skyline from Interstate 10 as we arrive in the city. There aren't many places in town where you can get this view.

California Dream'n

I just got back Monday evening from a fabulous 6 days in California with my wonderful friends Julie and Dave. Thanks Julie and Dave for a fantastic week of activities and beautiful California coastal weather. What a way to cool off after the hot Phoenix summer. The above scene is the ocean front view of Laguna Beach, a wonderful place to visit and enjoy everything a Pacific Ocean get-away has to offer.

Just look at this young one racing to shore on a green surf board. Sometimes I wish I could do this and other times I just enjoy watching. This time it was the watching (and photographing) that occupied my time. It takes a lot of patience for that short little ride to the shore.

Gathering at the Mall

A couple of years ago I did a post about a bar that was added to the mall area of Scottsdale Fashion Square. You can see it here. The last time I was at the mall I noticed that the bar was gone and this seating arrangement was in it's place. It looks like it's well used be people checking their phones (of course) and people eating ice cream.

Right behind the seating area is the smallest merry-go-round that I've ever seen. It too was getting some use.

It's Labor Day in the United States

I've had this photo in the archives for a while now and never got around to posting it but, since it's Labor Day here in the U.S. of A, I thought today was a perfect time.

The name of the statue is Arizona Worker's Memorial
"El Pasaja" and it is located in Wesley Bolin Park in front of the Arizona State Capitol.

The inscription reads "This monument, entitle 'The Passage', honors the men and women, from the earliest territorial miners to the present day workers, who have suffered permanent injury or death on the job. We recall their unique gifts and celebrate the time we shared."

It was funded by a number of workers unions. The artist is Clarke Riedy.

A Boatload of Fun

Why eat the same boring food the same old way? It's time to take it up a notch. Enter the sushi boat at Hana.

The unassuming Japanese eatery on 7th Ave is a great spot for some serious sushi. It reminded me of one of my favorite East Village sushi bars- small, but cozy with some dang good food.

After finally deciding what to order (I tend to like everything which makes it hard to edit) we opened up our BYOB vino! I love places that offer this option.

Soon after, there arrived a boatload of sushi... literally. Our sushi arrived on a miniature wooden boat that was so playful and fun I couldn't help but geek out a little bit and take a picture.

We ordered the Caterpillar roll (crab. eel. avocado,cucumber) and a special roll that was wrapped in cucumber instead of rice! The contents of the special roll were incredibly fresh and tasty with some spicy seasoning on top. However, I must warn you. This is not an easy (or pretty) thing to eat. I had a bit of a problem with a bite gone awry.... not cute.

I've Got Rhythm, I've Got Music

Who could ask for anything more?

I'm always down to try out new music. So far, the only tunes on my 'no-play list" include angry screaming men, gangster rappers and sugary pop straight outta Bop (save for katy perry- my guilty pleasure #1).

So off I went in search of fresh beats, finally landing at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix. This well-known spot offers locals the chance to see awesome acts in an intimate setting.

My first show there was last week for Margot and the Nuclear So and So's. The opening bands were so awful, that by the time Margot took the stage I was ready to leave. But cooler heads prevailed and I stuck around long enough to become obsessed with the band. $$ (that's the sound of me buying their cd on itunes).

Last night I was back in action for a special show sponsored by my friend Carlos' employer. You may of heard of it, Coca-Cola Co.? Junip, a cosmopolitan three piece from Gothenburg, Sweden – featuring Tobias Winterkorn (keyboards), Elias Araya (drums) and José González (vocals & guitar) headlined the show and it rocked. I give it another, $$.

Basically you should make a point of visiting Rhythm Room's website and see what bands are coming through town. Heck, get a little crazy and see someone you've never heard of before, you may just end up a fan!

A McNight to Remember Gala

I was lucky enough to be invited to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Phoenix gala, celebrating 25 Years of providing a “home-away-from-home” to families with sick loved ones.

The silver anniversary benefit, co-chaired by Kiffie Robbins and Dee Ann Nowell, was truly an elegant evening of fine dining, live & silent auctions and live entertainment. The Junior League of Phoenix and RMHC Board Member Wayne Stingley was honored with the 2010 Heart of the House Awards.

The charity event took place at none other than the Arizona Biltmore. The evening began with a silent auction with an open bar and passed hors d'oeuvres that appropriately included mini McDonald's cheeseburgers.

After the apps everyone filed into the ballroom for presentations, dinner and the live auction. They served the cutest mini grilled cheese's with tomato soup to start, but I was stunned into a sugar shock existence at the grandeur of our dessert!

Each plate had a giant piece of chocolate cake and then an adorable mini sundae (my favorite), not to be outdone by a little party favor of Fairytale brownie, which I've been told is about addictive as crack.

When it was finally time to dance I dragged my date onto the dance floor and made him do the Michael Jackson moonwalk. He humored me for about 5 minutes and then we went to meet the boss for drinks on the Biltmore patio bar.

Eric Glomski Entertains at Slow Food Event in Phoenix

Arizona Wine Week and Festival at the Farm

Gov. Jan Brewer officially proclaimed Oct 30-Nov 6 Arizona Wine Week. Hosted by Arizona Wine Growers Association, the week kicked off with wine soaked festivities like a 5k Grape Stomp through Phoenix, a rousing wine tasting competition hosted by Richard Ruelas of the Arizona Republic including more than 20 local AZ wineries, finally culminating in a gloriously gorgeous day at the Farm on South Mountain.

Jimmy Woos Grand Opening

Well, Long Duck Dong! Scottsdale finally has an awesomely accessible Chinese place to call their own! No more hiding in obscure strip malls, it's time for the brights lights... of Scottsdale Rd.

My fellow diners and I were given a special menu for opening night that included won ton soup, tofu lettuce wraps and and a deeeee-lish assortment of your basic, errr not so basic stir fry's.

Definitely try one of their signature drinks! I chose the "Year of the Cock", a fresh take on a margarita. Yum, but honestly anything with tequila suits me juuuuuuust fine : )

Nope, it's Autumn in AZ folks and it's time for countless festivals with numerous festivities and, you guessed it, a mountain of FUN!

This past weekend was a doozy of a good time. The 6th annual Phoenix Fashion Week kicked off the official end of summer with a fashion filled week at the W in Scottsdale.

Model-ish behavior found new heights in the heels and hearts of those who attended. Executive Director, Brian Hill, is certainly the King of Phoenix Fashionland and is doing his best to bridge the gap between buyers and designers.

Not to be outdone by their Phoenican friends, Scottsdale socialites gathered at SMoCA for their fall opening celebration including Scottsdale Fashion Week's Designer of the Year Runway Show. I'm looking forward to attending the Junior League Sponsored event, Nov. 4-6.

Saturday was an epic day filled with tacos, tequila, then bicycles and beer and then tamales and tequila.... are we beginning to see a pattern??

Taco Fest 2010 rocked my socks- bottom line. There are few things I love more than quality tequila tastings and fish tacos...

if these are your children- you've failed as a mother

But then there was bikes and beer- really good beer and really crazy bikes! Tour de Fat in Tempe proved to be the perfect spot for un-inhibited, sun-drenched, people watching. A bohemian brothel filled with scantily clad 20-30 somethings looking to have nothing but a good time.

2 red-bulls and a disco nap later, I found myself miraculously showered, dressed and ready to be chauffered to the New Times Best of Afare at the Cityscape in downtown Phoenix.

The award winning vendors dished out delicious goodies and served up tasty libations to the tune of a 10 piece orchestra playing the oldies. I almost got my date to dance with me.... almost- but I ended up finding tamales and -shocker- tequila.

It only gets better ladies and gents. So I suggest you rest up and prep for the next 9 months- it's gonna get crazy.

It hit me. The little sugar monster inside that began slowly whispering it needed a sweet snack but then grew into a loud, full on bitch fest.

Alright, alright- geeze...

Deciding to appease the sugar monster, I went in search of something in my abandoned kitchen. To my utter shock and surprise I found the perfect components for a sweet treat hiding in my freezer!

Whole frozen strawberries, vanilla almond milk, overly ripe bananas and lite cool whip made the list for my last minute recipe.

After thawing 5 whole strawberries in a bowl and defrosting them in the microwave for a minute, I tossed them into my blender along with 1 banana and enough almond milk to cover the banana berry goodness.

BBBBBBBBBBLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEENNNNNNNDDDDDDDD until smooth.

A low cal, easy dessert that can be found lurking in your grocers freezer section.

Now pour into a perfectly appropriate fancy glass, top with cool whip and enjoy!

Feelin' hot, hot, hot!

(get-to-know-me-side note) the setting: watching a scientific video about volcanoes in 6th grade at my strict religious prep school, the song, the situation: song deemed 'inappropriate' by my teacher due to its passionate beat...)

Volcanic eruptions and lava slides aside, it got me thinking about ways to get out of the heat and do something out of the ordinary... luckily I had the fantastic opportunity to head up to the quaint and remarkably interesting wine destination of Northern AZ.

My first stop was Page Springs Cellars, a picturesque vision of what a wine weekend getaway is all about: idyllic vistas, tasty wine and knowledgeable staff ready and waiting to pour delectable amounts of their finest vintage.

A school in its infancy, a celeb den as a teen and now, after having a little work done, is graciously all grown up.

My friends, I have returned from a long journey. My trek took me to the unknown and rarely explored community that is West Phoenix, specifically Glendale.

It was an unassuming Vietnamese restaurant called Little Saigon that captured my attention and ultimately, my taste buds.

Triple digit temps, a heat rivaling the '7th circle of hell' as a friend recently put it, allow for some time to cool down and relax.

I recently visited the Centre for Well-Being at the Phoenician for a promotional spa deal. What was supposed to be an hour long massage turned into a 5 hour day-stay which included the complimentary use of their fitness center, sauna, steam room and gorgeous locker room filled with amenities.

Walking in, I was greeted by a friendly perma-smile spa sister who was ready for me to have a relaxing experience. I was given a locker, filled with sandals and a plush robe, then directed to sit in the solarium where fruity infused water dispensers offered refreshment for spa-citizens. 3 glassses of cucumber H2O and 1 Vogue later, I was ready for my massage.

**CR Full Disclosure: did not like my masseuse. She was a talker. No me gusta.

After the massage, I decided to get my $ worth and wallowed in spa central as long as I could. Workout, sauna, shower.

**Best of the best: the amenities- every wash, lotion, spray you need to prep for the rest of your day.

Nothing breaks up the sweltering summer monotony like a weekend in Vegas. Armed with 20 + of my closest friends... er... wolfpack, I charged the strip in search of a good time.

Because mastering the art of Vegas can be daunting, I've assembled a how-to guide for your viewing pleasure. FYI: they didn't call me 'Frommers' in college for nothin'.

Getting There: to fly? or to drive? good question.

Fly the good flight and take a Southwest trip to the desert oasis. If you're less than 5 hours away and have Friday off- drive, road trips = bonding.

Stay: The Palazzo, Venetian, Bellagio or Ceasar's

Location is key at these luxury hotels. The P and the V are connected as are the B and the C- so you get twice the amenities and restaurant options for the price of one. It's a great equation.

Downtown Phoenix and specifically cycling in Phoenix is continuing to grow and be promoted by local bloggers and community organizations like Light Rail Blogger, Roosevelt Row and the downtown Phoenix group.

As proud as I was to be, however briefly, a part of that group, I am closing down this blog. My husband and I have embarked on a long term travel adventure and are not sure if and when we will return to Phoenix. We are blogging about our travels which I expect to feature bicycles from time to time.

I started out writing this post as another reminder to follow the traffic rules when cycling. But what I found when I started digging around news articles from around the country is that there is a whole lot of animosity towards cyclists.

Part (all?) of this animosity comes from cyclists not obeying the law and riding responsibly. That is indeed one of my biggest pet peeves both as a cyclist and as a driver. But does it seem to be more than that to any of you? It seems like cyclists really piss people off. Why is that?

There is so much that I want to (and will) say about cycling infrastructure and how downtown Phoenix is perfectly poised to accept and integrate a vibrant cycling culture. But not today. Today I just want to ask if any of you have any experience with bike sharing programs.

The most well publicized is the Paris program, Velib, and has been imitated in other European cities, Canada and now in the U.S. as well in cities like D.C. and Boston. {Update: the first bicycle share program was in La Rochelle, France which implemented it in 1974. It is still a successful and well-used program today.}

Has anyone ever used a bike from one of these programs? Did you like it? Was it easy? Do you think it should be implemented in Phoenix?

It does appear that there is increased cycling safety in greater numbers. Could a program like this increase the numbers on our street and help create a critical mass of transportation cyclists in Phoenix?

Those Dutch are clever. I've seen all sorts of cargo bikes in my (internet) travels but this is the first hearse bike I've seen.

Rules of the Road

Quick topic of discussion for today:

My husband and I notice that cars act weird around us when we are riding our bikes, the most common being that they stop in the middle of the road at an intersection when they have the right of way and we are at the stop sign.

I appreciate that the drivers are being more careful but it would be best if everyone followed the same traffic laws. Makes for a much more predictable experience.

Anchor Manufacturing Building: Vintage Schwinn's!

One of the things I love about downtown Phoenix is all of the small locally owned businesses. And coming soon, there will be more. The husband and wife team who brought us R&R Surplus are planning to open a vintage Schwinn bicycle shop in the same warehouse.

Copenhagenize (and Newsweek and msnbc) recently wrote about demotorization. In Japan, auto sales are decreasing as people are choosing bicycles and public transportation over cars.

But demotorizing doesn't need to be an all or none proposition. Perhaps you demotorize one day a month or one day a week. Even these small changes can save you money and increase the quality of your day.

So how about demotorizing tonight?

At 10pm tonight, your friends, neighbors and local bloggers will be meeting at Monti's and Maizies (Central and Camelback Light Rail Station) for the first ever Night Rail.

The PHX Wild West, an All-American Staple

It has finally happened. Sure, we locals know that downtown PHX is one of the friendliest areas around--a small town in the 5th largest city in the country. We know our neighbors, work together and collaborate everyday. It's nothing extraordinary, that's simply how we do it here in the Wild West. It just so happens that there is an award for community members, government, businesses and nonprofit organizations who work together to address critical local issues. Over the years, 500 cities towns, counties, neighborhood and regions have earned the All-American City Award. This year PHX was chosen as one of the 10 winners out of 29 finalists in the 60th annual competition in Tampa Bay last week. We were the only AZ finalist of the country's most prestigious community recognition award thanks to a committee of 60 people, including 40 community members and 20 city employees.

The Phoenix delegation included Mayor Gordon, Councilmembers Michael Johnson and Michael Nowakowski, City Manager Frank Fairbanks and Deputy City Manager Rick Naimark, along with several community members including our very own Greg Esser, the Executive Director of Roosevelt Row. Thanks so much to everyone who worked hard to get the word out about this big small town embarking on uncharted territory everyday.

Business Week Ranks Phoenix #1 City For Recent Graduates

The article does not address the affordability of home-ownership in today's market, the opportunities to start your own business or the fact that we host one of the largest free monthly First Fridays events in the nation, attracting more than 15,000 people every month. Homes located within the new downtown Phoenix arts district, especially in the Garfield neighborhood, are currently selling for under $100,000. The monthly mortgage payment on a $100,000 home at 5.5% interest is about $570 per month. That is less than the price of housing in Laramie, Wyoming.

Happy Hour Doesn't Hibernate

There's a secret about downtown PHX that many of you may not know. It seems to be time to let the cat out of the bag--even if it means we lose our favorite seat at The Lost Leaf or have to wait an extra 15 minutes at CIBO. Here it is: after First Friday, we don't all hibernate for the rest of the month. In fact, the hustle and bustle continues every other Friday... and every Saturday or Wednesday for that matter. There are great things happening here every weekend and a new spot for lunch or happy hour every day of the week. Take some time to check out that great spot that was too packed on First Friday and bring some friends. Fridays in PHX happen every week and we want to help you find the latest happenings. Patio Lounging at Local Breeze

Although the summer heat has certainly arrived, last Friday was a nice cool blip on the weather radar. Even when the heat is in full force, nothing beats a downtown PHX outdoor patio and Local Breeze was the perfect spot to spend a Friday afternoon. This new restaurant at the Caveness House is doing its best to slowly build a locally-sourced menu as they build their clientele. Hearty sandwiches and local brews got us their for lunch and the staff was so nice, we decided to return later to finish out the work day with some locally roasted organic coffee filled with local Shamrock Farms creamer. They gladly took our suggestions to partner with the Downtown Phoenix Public Market for locally grown produce and get stronger wifi so we could lounge on the couches with our laptops whenever we wanted a more social work afternoon. Get out of the office and get to know your neighbors with some good food at this great new addition to the Row.

Civic Space: Connecting the Dots

If you haven't been to the latest and greatest addition downtown, you are way past due for some quality grass lounging in Civic Space. The opening day last Thursday was a monumental moment for downtown. This was first time since the Light Rail opening that I felt a truly overwhelming sense of progress. Everyone coming together, enjoying the outdoors and seeing how the dots are finally being connected made me think just how far things have come. The hard work of so many community members and the City for so long has clearly paid off. Here's a huge thank you to everyone who helped pave the way to make downtown PHX the unique city that would demand a shady solar-powered park including historic renovation, a space for live local music and events, a huge public art piece and hopefully some independent businesses to come. This is pretty cool place and it's just going to get better from here, I can't wait.

Growing Community, Growing Shade

On Saturday, May 28th, Roosevelt Row partnered with the Mayor's office to execute the second annual tree planting this year. Around 40 new Evergreen Elms were planting along 5th and 6th St off of Roosevelt with the help of Valley Forward, SRP, ASU students and the Roosevelt Row community. With everyone's dedication to a cleaner Downtown, putting trees in seems like one of the fastest, simplest and greenest solution to beautiful streets and bit of desert cooling. Thanks again to everyone who helped grow a closer community by growing some shade!

Choosing Comminity in '09

It's no secret that the economy has taken a nosedive with no clear surfacing to in sight. Fortunately, there are still a few secrets out there on how to cope with it. It seems as though when times take a bad turn, it gives you a chance to reevaluate your day to day choices. Even simple choices like going to the grocery store can make an extensive impact in your community without you even realizing the depth of it. Here are some examples of choices you can make that will ripple the surface until we reach smoother sailing ahead.

Good Groceries
Walk or take public transportation to the grocery store. It'll make a world of difference.
Community:
This creates a pedestrian atmosphere that attracts others to do the same. You can interact with your neighbors and get more people wanting to live downtown in one fell swoop.
Environment:
Not only are you saving gas money and getting exercise, you are reducing our carbon footprint. Take it a step further and bring a canvas bag to the grocery store.
Economy:
Not only will you be giving your sales tax back to your community, you can make the choice to spend that money at a locally-owned grocery store such as Bashas or Ranch Market. The more money we rack up in monthly sales tax, the less likely we are to lose important funding for our schools, streets, and services.

Free Fun
There are loads of free events and projects happening in PHX every week, take advantage of them!
Community:
Without a lot of support, there is a good chance that these festivals will stop receiving the funding and sponsorship they need to exist. Just for attending a free event, you are keeping PHX active and vibrant.
Environment:
Ride your bike to the event and enjoy the outdoors. It is incredible how much time we spend indoors considering our famous AZ weather.
Economy:
Not only is this free for you but there is a chance that you will end up finding local businesses, artists, vendors and restaurants that you wouldn't have known about otherwise. Birthday gifts from First Friday vendors are sure to be one of a kind.

These are just a couple of thoughts on how to soften the blow. Eat locally, say hi to your neighbors and get outside. You'll be making PHX a richer community with every small choice. Feel free to post more thoughts and suggestions on how you create community everyday.

My Favorite Time of Year

Autumn in Phoenix does not bring massive color changes in the trees or the crispness in the air of impending snow, but it does create a sense of excitement in me. After surviving another summer here, it's time to get out of the a/c and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. I invite you all to come down to Roosevelt Row and experience the many exciting events happening in the area. Check out our calendar of events on our website to get all the inside information. If you haven't been to First Friday in awhile, you might be surprised to see how it has grown! Or enjoy a Saturday morning shopping spree at the Downtown Public Market. And while you're here, take a stroll around in this beautiful weather and visit some of the award-winning restaurants and boutiques in our area. Enjoy this time, because as we all know, it won't last!

Checking the Weather

Being a weather forecaster in Phoenix has to be one of the easiest jobs around. Hmmm...hot and sunny. If that is your weather forecast every day of the year, you won't get it wrong very often. Climate is one of the great attractions of Arizona. It is a dry heat, after all...

Downtown Phoenix is on the verge of dramatic new additions to the urban landscape. The incremental changes continue to evolve in a positive direction as well. ASU will open the Walter Kronkite School of Journalism and 700 new students will move into their rooms in the new housing tower this month. The new Sheraton Hotel will open in October and the Convention Center will open in January. In December, the new light rail system will open to the public giving a new face to transportation in the Valley of the Sun.

First Fridays Street Closure

Roosevelt Row hosts a monthly block party street closure that attracts thousands of arts patrons on the First Friday of every month. First Fridays is a free monthly artwalk organized by Artlink, Inc. that has grown to become one of the largest events of its kind in the nation. And it is still growing! This grassroots event is open to anyone that wants to participate. The Roosevelt Row block party street closure provides an opportunity for artists to display their work. Summer Solstice Celebration

This exclusive event features food from the local award-winning chefs that make this one of the best neighborhoods in Phoenix for dining, beer from Four Peaks Brewing, artwork from the artists that have played a critical role in the revitalization of the area and entertainment by members of the Downtown Phoenix Chamber Series.
