The Pursuit of God is a classic resource authored by one of the best-known and loved Christian writers of all time. Because of poverty, A. W. On a train trip from Chicago to Texas in the 1940s, A. W. Tozer wrote The Pursuit of God almost overnight. Little did he know that this manuscript will be translated into 15 different languages and become a favorite with over 1.7 million copies in print.

The Pursuit of God by A.W. Tozer shares about how a person can draw near to God and pursue Him in his body, mind, will, emotions, heart, soul, and spirit. It is made up of ten chapters ending with a short prayer. Perhaps, the chapter that best captured my heart is the second chapter—The Blessedness of Possessing Nothing. I received a rebuke and at the same time affirmation that having God in my heart is the most important thing in the world. Here are the two significant lines in that chapter – “The man who has God for his treasure has all things in One.” “Everything is safe which we commit to Him, and nothing is really safe which is not so committed.”

The Pursuit of God is written in a humble yet convicting tone. It strikes right into the heart of its readers, making them see themselves clearly in the light of the Word of God and ushers them into a sense of contemplation on where they have been in their walk with God, where they are, and where they desire to be. The Pursuit of God is replete with Scriptures and Tozer’s insights on those Scriptures. Every person, Christian or otherwise, young and old, ought to read this Christian classic considered as a spiritual treasure. This is meant to be read not just once but many times until the words penetrate one’s spirit. We have been so pre-occupied searching for many things like education, career, finances, relationships, ministry, wealth, treasures,  when in reality we only need to pursue only one Person—God Himself. The psalmist is correct in saying in Psalm 63.1—

“O GOD, You are my God, earnestly will I seek You; my inner self thirsts for You, my flesh longs and is faint for You, in a dry and weary land where no water is.”

The story has two voices: one of Denver Moore, an uneducated poor man who shares about his experiences as a slave and as a  homeless in Forthworth, Texas; and the other, of Ron Hall who seemed to have it all together as a very rich man. Deborah Hall or Debbie is the wife of Ron Hall who selflessly listened and ministered to the poor and homeless like Denver in Union Gospel Mission.

Same Kind Of Different As Me portrays how different poverty and affluence are and how similar they are in the context of the kingdom of God. The rich and the poor both live in this temporary settlement while awaiting the true home prepared for them in heaven. It is ironic that an unlearned, uneducated man like Denver will have a wonderful idea on how to address the issue of poverty and homelessness in the city. After the tragic death of Debbie from terminal disease, Ron Hall felt void and emptiness. He thought that another beautiful woman will come along but God sent Denver to him to teach him lessons he has not learned before.

Same Kind Of Different As Me by Denver Moore and Ron Hall are filled with pain and laughter, frustrations and hope, despair and life, weaknesses and strengths, highs and lows.
