Poetry Club Invites Student, Staff Entries

All Cayuga students and staff are invited to check out the Poetry Club, and to submit their original poems to be considered for a forthcoming publication. According to Greg Miraglia, president of the new student club, members will review the submissions and choose a collection to appear in print. There is no cost to enter, but each entry must have a title and include the author's name and contact information.

E-mail submissions to CayugaPoetryClub@gmail.com by Friday, November 20, 2009. The club meets on Mondays at 11:00 a.m. in R202, with Professor Howard Nelson of the English Department as the faculty adviser.

Thursday, November 19, is this year's Great American Smokeout, an initiative of the American Cancer Society. New Year's resolutions aren't just for people anymore. Colleges can make them, too. Starting January 1, 2010, Cayuga Community College has resolved to become a tobacco-free airspace.

Cayuga CC to Hold Open Houses at Auburn and Fulton Campuses

Tours of the Auburn and Fulton campuses, information about degrees and financial aid, and prize drawings will be offered at evening and weekend Open Houses in November at Cayuga Community College. Prospective students can talk with faculty, students and admissions counselors at the events to be held at both campuses Tuesday evening, November 10, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., and Saturday morning, November 14, from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

To reserve a spot, call the college admissions office at 315-255-1743 (Auburn) or 315-592-4143 (Fulton). Online registration is available at www.cayuga-cc.edu/openhouse.

Harlequin Productions Receives Three Awards for the Quality of Work

Harlequin Productions of Cayuga Community College is thrilled to announce that they have received three Awards for the quality of work seen in this fall's production of "Flipped and Twisted" an evening of two comic one-acts.

The Theatre Association of NY State adjudicator Frances Ruoff from Brooklyn, after viewing the Halloween performance stated: "Harlequin Productions has given us the perfect entertainment for this Halloween season. Zany farces with lots of fun, sex, blood and bodies provide something for young and old to enjoy this time of year."

She also decided to honor Harlequin with the following awards: Meritorious Achievement in Scenic Design to Virginia Fennessy; Meritorious Achievement in Acting to Brie O'Connell and Zac Darling.

"Flipped and Twisted" which consists of BOB JUAN (the mis-adventures of Don Juan's younger brother) and JACK, THE TICKET RIPPER (about a man who goes on a murderous rampage after being fired) continues performances this weekend at CCC in the Bisgrove theatre. The Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening performances all begin at 8PM. Tickets are $1 for students, $5 general admission .

Danny Browne, Pat Sodums Named to Men's Soccer All-Star Team

Congratulations to Danny Browne and Pat Sodums, who were both named to the Mid-State Athletic Conference Men's Soccer All-Star Team for the Fall 2009 season.

Browne, a sophomore from Manchester, England, led the Spartans in scoring with 10 goals and 2 assists from his defensive sweeper position. The team's captain provided great leadership for a team that narrowly missed a NJCAA Region III post-season spot. This is Browne's second appearance on this squad…as he also was named to the 2007 MSAC All-Star team. He is currently majoring in Liberal Arts & Science at CCC.

Joining Browne as an All-Star is freshman midfielder Pat Sodums. The Spencer native scored one goal and had four assists in helping to anchor the midfield for the Spartans. He is currently majoring in Business Administration at CCC.

Dunster Named to Women's Soccer All-Star Team

Congratulations to Lauren Dunster, who was named to the Mid-State Athletic Conference Women's Soccer All-Star Team for the Fall 2009 season. The freshman sweeper led the Spartans in tackles and pass interceptions…and was counted on to assist in neutralizing many opponent's top scorers in a very competitive NJCAA Region III schedule. The Auburn, NY native transferred from Canisius College and is currently majoring in Liberal Arts & Science at CCC.

Both Cayuga CC Campuses to Honor Veterans on Monday, November 9

Free Film Series on Alzheimer's

In collaboration with HBO, the Cayuga County Office for the Aging will present a four-part documentary film series, The Alzheimer's Project, in November 2009 at the Auburn campus of Cayuga Community College.

Alzheimer's, an incurable disease of the brain which causes progressive memory loss, may affect as many as 11 million Americans by the year 2040. The Office for the Aging is offering this free film series to provide support and education to Alzheimer's sufferers and their families and caregivers.

The film's four segments will be shown on consecutive Monday evenings at the Bisgrove Community Theatre. Topics are:

November 9 - Memory Loss
November 16 - The Caregiver
November 23 - Research
November 30 - Management

The series is free and open to the public. All showings begin at 6:00 p.m. For more information, contact the Cayuga County Office at 315-253-1104.

Love and Murder Take the Stage in Halloween One-Acts at Cayuga CC

Showing its Halloween spirit with a romantic farce and a bloodthirsty comedy, Harlequin Productions of Cayuga Community College will present as its fall 2009 show Flipped and Twisted: An Evening of Two One-Acts.

The world premiere of "Bob Juan" by Jay Huling will open the evening with a spoof of Lord Byron's epic poem, Don Juan. Lovelorn Bob pursues the beautiful and vain Donna Julia amid sight gags, bawdy humor and slapstick, complete with cuckolded husband and long-suffering maid.

The flip side of the evening is "Jack, the Ticket Ripper" by John Morogiello, a revenge caper that premiered at the 2009 Fringe Festival in Washington. Jack, a theatre company's veteran ticket-taker, loses his job to an optical scanner and goes after the ensemble cast in a hilariously murderous rampage.

Both plays are directed by award-winning Harlequin producer Bob Frame. The double-header will be staged Thursday through Saturday, October 29–31, 20009 and November 5–7, 2009, at 8:00 p.m. in the Irene A. Bisgrove Community Theatre on the Auburn campus. Admission is $1 for Cayuga students and $5 for the general public at the door.

Poet Diane Lockward to Read at Both Cayuga CC Campuses

Award-winning poet Diane Lockward, author of the collections What Feeds Us (2006) and Eve's Red Dress (2003), will give free public readings of her work at both Cayuga Community College campuses. She will appear Monday, October 19, in the Auburn campus student lounge, and Wednesday, October 21, in room F-150 on the Fulton campus. Both readings are from 11:00 a.m. to noon, with copies of Lockward's books available for purchase and signing.

Trustee Appointment and Elections at Cayuga Community College

Thomas E. Ganey of Auburn has joined the Board of Trustees of Cayuga Community College. Ganey was appointed by Governor David Paterson to fill a vacancy on the 10-member Board. A Cayuga Community College alumnus with a career in banking, Ganey is President and CEO of Savannah Bank, NA.

Soccer: Women Win, Men Lose, Both by a Point

The Spartan's women soccer team earned their first win of the season in a 2-1 comeback victory over Corning CC on September 9. Sophomore captain Abby Gamba helped control the midfield and assisted on one of Brittney Bigness' two second-half goals. The Spartan women are 1-3 on the 2009–10 season.

For the men, sophomore Danny Browne tallied Cayuga's two goals but was bested by Corning's three. The team's 0-3-1 start for the season included one tie in overtime against Niagara and a 3-2 overtime loss on the road at Clinton.

High School Counselors to Explore 30 SUNY Campuses

Cayuga CC Student Video Wins Gold Award in National Competition

A Tale of Two Lakes, a documentary video produced by students in the Cayuga Community College Telcom Department, is one of the winners of the 2009 Classic Gold Telly Award in the Non-Broadcast Production category. This is the second Telly won by the video, and its fourth major award.

A Tale of Two Lakes traces a fateful century of history for two upstate New York lakes. Today, Skaneateles Lake is a pristine source of pure drinking water, while less than 20 miles away, Onondaga Lake is a toxic waste site.

Cayuga CC to Offer SAT Prep Courses in Auburn and Fulton

Beginning in September, Cayuga Community College will offer high school students an eight-week SAT preparation course. "Prep for the SAT Test," based on the latest version of the SAT, will meet once a week at Cayuga's Auburn and Fulton campuses.

This intensive course helps students assess their strengths and weaknesses in the verbal and math sections of the test. The course teaches efficient answer strategies for sentence completion, reading comprehension and math reasoning.

The Fulton campus course will be held Thursdays, September 10 through October 29, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The Auburn campus course will be held Sundays, September 13 through November 1, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Both groups will finish before the 2009 SAT test dates of November 7 and December 5.

Tuition for the course is $159. A textbook is required at the first class and costs about $20 at the college bookstore.

Registration and details on class and bookstore locations are available through Cayuga's Community Education office at 315-294-8841. Credit card payments are accepted by phone; checks may be mailed or brought to the college.

Stardust Entrepreneurial Institute Launched

The Stardust Entrepreneurial Institute, a partnership created to spur economic and social progress in the region, held a dedication ceremony at its newly renovated building in downtown Auburn on August 20, 2009. On hand to show state-level support for the Institute were New York State Senator Michael F. Nozzolio, Chancellor of the State University of New York Nancy L. Zimpher, and Vice Chancellor for Community Colleges Dennis Golladay, former president of Cayuga Community College.

SUNY Chancellor Visits Cayuga Community College

As part of her statewide tour of the State University of New York campuses, SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher visited Cayuga Community College on Thursday, August 20, 2009. Following her appearance at the dedication of the Stardust Entrepreneurial Institute in downtown Auburn, Zimpher met with senior administrators at the Cayuga campus. In a discussion with college president Daniel Larson, vice presidents and deans, the Chancellor focused on the opportunities and challenges facing Cayuga Community College within the SUNY system of public higher education.

Cayuga CC Nursing Program Earns Accreditation Update

The associate degree program in nursing at Cayuga Community College has received continuing accreditation from the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Based on a self-study report by the nursing faculty, a site visit by peer reviewers and analysis of data collected by the NLNAC Board of Commissioners, continuing accreditation has been granted for a full eight-year cycle, with the next evaluation visit scheduled for 2017.

CCC Fulton Campus Student Wins NYS Sheriffs' Association Scholarship

Oswego County Sheriff Reuel Todd has presented a 2009 New York State Sheriffs' Association Scholarship to Corey Trask of Pennellville. Trask, who received a degree in Criminal Justice: Police from Cayuga Community College in May, is a member of the Belgium–Cold Springs Fire Department and works as a security guard at Great Northern Mall. Second Cayuga CC Grad Wins Emmy

Jeff Woodard has become the second graduate of Cayuga Community College to win an Emmy Award for his work in television. Woodard, who earned an associate's degree in broadcasting from Cayuga in 1992, has been with WGRZ-TV, the NBC affiliate in Buffalo, since 1998. Click here to read more.
