Target Audience: This strategy post is intended for players who describe themselves as “freeroll whores”, players who haven’t deposited any money online yet, or players who have made a few deposits & are breaking even or losing.

Introduction: Making money playing poker on the internet is much more than just being good at poker. There are several things that successful players do to increase their expectation that happen away from the poker table. They choose profitable games, they manage their bankroll well, and they maximize the rakeback that poker sites give to you in return for playing. This post will be a short guide to getting started at online poker in a profitable way.

This guide is also written to be as short & sweet as possible. Also, at the end of each section, you’ll find cliff notes, summing everything up in 1-2 short sentences.

Rule #1: Start at a smaller poker site

There are several good reasons to start at a site that is smaller.
The smaller sites give you more rakeback & bonuses.
Smaller sites are often softer.
You won’t be able to make use of the advantages large sites offer.
Smaller sites need players, and in order to entice you to play there, they often offer bigger bonuses or more rakeback than the big two. And because the rake you pay is a large portion of your win rate at microstakes, earning more of that rake back by clearing a bonus or getting rakeback is very important when you’re first starting out. And when you’re new & barely winning, very often whoring bonus is the only thing growing your bankroll.

You can download this Poker Room to begin

The main advantages to playing at a big site are:
They provide more game selection at higher stakes & non-hold’em games.
Their software is better for playing multiple tables.
Their software allows the use of a Heads-Up display & tracking programs.
If you are just starting out in the world of online poker, you likely don’t care about these three reasons. You’re not playing high stakes, you’re not multi-tabling more than 3-4 tables, and you really don’t need a HUD to beat almost all microstakes games.

Bonus whoring at a smaller, softer poker site with a small deposit is a good way to start playing online poker for real monies. You won’t miss the features of the large site, and you’ll earn more cash to start with.

Rule #2: Freerolls are training wheels

Freerolls are a double edged sword, they’re both good and bad. They’re good because they provide a free way to learn the game. However, they’re bad because they can teach you bad habits & you could be earning far more money playing for real dollars. When I played freerolls a few years ago, I made about 2 cents an hour. Playing the lowest level cash games or sit & go’s, you’ll usually earn FAR FAR more money.

So here’s the plan: Play freerolls at two of the sites you would like to make your first deposit at. This allows you to play two freerolls at a time. As soon as you cash in one of them, make your first small ($50-$200) deposit at that site. By getting through the large freeroll field, you’ll have an idea of how to play poker. Plus, you’ll have a bit of extra cash to play with. However, you won’t waste your time playing for 2 cents an hour, and since you’ve deposited, you can now play with correct bankroll management.

Play freerolls at 2-3 sites until you cash, then deposit a small amount. Don’t waste your time accumulating bad habits, and earning no money.

Rule #3: Practice REALLY safe bankroll management

Bankroll management means that you do not risk a large amount of your total money at once. And since you are a new player, you should practice VERY SAFE bankroll management. No matter how good you are, poker is a game with many ups & downs. If you do not manage the risks you take well, even excellent players can become broke fairly quickly. So if you don’t want to deposit ever again, here are my bankroll management recommendations:
No-Limit Hold’em Cash Games: 2500 big blinds minimum, 3500 big blind target.
Single Table Sit & Go Tournaments: 30 buy-ins minimum without fee included, 45 buy-ins target.
Multi-Table Tournaments: 50 buy-ins minimum, without fee included, 75 buy-ins target.
The minimum is the lowest amount of money you can have to play that level. If you drop below that level, then you’ll want to move down in stakes. The target level is the money you’d prefer to have to play a given stake level, so that you can sustain a long string of losses.

So, for example, if I wanted to play $5.00+$0.5 sit & go’s, I would deposit enough money to give my account $225 (45 buy-ins). This way, I can sustain a 15 buy-in loss, and I’ll still be able to move down in stakes to recover my bankroll.

If you don’t manage your risks carefully, you will be broke. And you should be extra careful when you’re beginning because you are not used to the swings that poker can cause you.

Rule #4: Start playing Turbo, 1 table, 9 player Sit & Go’s

This rule isn’t set in stone. You could play cash games, or regular speed SnG’s to start with. But I believe this is the best choice of game to start with because:
Turbo SnG’s are the easiest type of game to learn.
Turbo SnG’s are very soft.
You can play more turbo SnG’s in the same time period.
When you’re in a Sit & Go, and you have 15 big blinds or less, your only play is often to go all-in preflop, or fold. This is a good thing because it makes your decisions simple, and your opponents will do stupid things like limp off 10% of their stack. Turbo sit & go’s allow you to get to this short stacked play much quicker than regular sit & go’s, and they give you a better $/hr. If you want to learn to play Sit & Go’s, there are several good posts on the subject on this site.

Playing 1 table sit & go’s will reduce your swings when compared to multi-table tournaments, and the strategy for multi-table tournaments is not as simple as sit & go’s. Also, you will want to pick the lowest priced sit & go that has a fee that is less than 15% of the buy in. Often sites will offer sit & go’s for very cheap, but the large fee you pay will eat into your profits. So for example, at Ultimate Bet, I would start by playing $5+$0.5, because the fee is only 50 cents (10% of the buy-in). The $1+$0.2 sit & go’s have a fee of 20%, and they aren’t that much easier than the $5+$0.50′s.

Start with one table sit & go tournaments, because they are the simplest game to learn. Start with the cheapest stakes that have a rake less than 15%.

Rule #5: Track Your Results

Knowing what games are profitable for you is very important. You’ll probably be experimenting with many different game types, and you want to know which ones offer you the most profit. Also, bonus dollars & rakeback can hide the fact that you’re actually a losing player at the tables. Thus, you’ll want to use a spreadsheet, or a tracking website, to keep track of your results. There are free websites like this one which allow you to keep track of your results. Use them.

Later in your career, you may want to purchase tracking software like Poker Tracker or Hold’em Manager. However, until you have about $500-$750 in your poker account, their cost isn’t really worth it.

Also, make sure that you play a decent sample of hands/tournaments before you decide if your win-rate is good or not. If you’ve only played 2000 hands in a cash game, you don’t have enough data to know if you’re a solid winner or not. Play at least 8000-10000 hands of cash games, or 40-60 sit & go’s before you look at your results.

How will you know if you’re a winning player unless you keep track of your results?

Conclusion: Online poker can be a profitable & fun hobby. However, there are more things to think about than just playing correctly at the table. Hopefully I’ve got you thinking about 5 things away from the tables that will turn a fun hobby into some money as well.

Online casinos offer comfort for players, accessibility, user friendliness, peace of mind, familiarity, anonymity, affordability, convenience and ease. Since the advent of the online casino, more and more gamers feel the simplicity of the online casino

The online casino has over time developed it’s look and feel. Graphics have been vastly improved giving the user a real to life casino experience. Software is constantly up to date to provide players with true randomness of results.

One further area of online casinos further developing its look and feel is in the area of the dealer. In the past the dealer has been a computer with a random number generator. These computer dealers were heavily tested to provide even and random results. Now, online casinos are offering the option of a “live” dealer, where players can view a real life person as they go through the motions of dealing.

Many players feel more comfortable knowing they can see a “live” dealer and see what is happening as the dealer does. It is these people that online casinos are trying to appeal to by having a “live” dealer.

Having a real “live” dealer offers a human touch that some players are looking for. Having this option is but one way to attract more players to an online casino.

Currently, William Hill Casino Club has four games with “live” dealer, including baccarat, blackjack, roulette and sic bo.

About William Hill Casino Club

Baccarat is one of the most simple of all casino card games, and yet is one that is not as widely understood and played throughout the world.

The aim of Baccarat is to assemble your hand to contain two or three cards with a total value of nine, or secondly eight. The absolutely perfect hand is one that contains two cards and their value totals nine, this is known as a “Natural Nine” or a “Natural Eight”. If any of the players, including the banker, has a “Natual Nine” or a “Natural Eight” then the other players may not draw a third card – that player is the winner unless there is a tie between two players in which case the game is void. If there are no “Naturals” then players decide whether to bet or fold.

Card Scoring:

The biggest mistake beginning poker players make is with their starting hands. In fact, most poker “fish” are surprised to find out that there is actually a system for picking starting hands. They will play almost any face card, no matter what the second card is.

In some ways, poker is a bit like dating. The better the “car” you show up in, the better chance you have of getting lucky. The same is true with starting hands.

Rolls-Royces
1. A-A
2. K-K
3. Q-Q

These are the best of the best hands in NL Hold’em. All three of these hands are ones you can feel fairly confident going “all-in” before the flop. The odds will be on your side.

Mercedes
1. J-J
2. A-K suited
3. 10-10

You should feel good if you pick up any of these three hands. The chances of someone having something better before the flop are slim. Go ahead and put a good pre-flop raise out there. If you chase everyone off, so be it. But beware, the value of these hands can diminish depending on what the board yields. If over cards, pairs, flush or straight draws materialize, you need to protect your cards with a big raise, or fold and fight another day.

Cadillacs
1. A-K
2. A-Q suited
3. K-Q suited

These are good hands, but all three can be tricky to play. A pre-flop protection raise is a good way to play them. Keep your eyes open after the flop for draws and over cards. With A-Q suited, you have a lot of ways to make your hand, but be careful if just an ace comes out, someone may have A-K or two pair with the ace. The same applied to K-Q suited.

Chryslers
1. A-Q
2. 9-9
3. K-Q
4. A-J suited
5. 8-8
6. Q-J suited
7. J-10 suited

Some good hands need a little help. All of these hands are worth raising with, but they need a little bit of help to be really strong. For example, a pair of eights is in trouble if an over card comes out on the flop. But get a third eight and bingo-bongo-bango, to borrow a phrase from Mike Sexton.

Mustangs
1. K-Q
2. A-J
3. K-J
4. Q-J
5. 7-7
6. 6-6
7. 5-5
8. 4-4
9. 3-3
10. 2-2

Any of these hands can get better with just a little bit of luck. With the pairs, you are looking for three of a kind, or “trips”, to come out on the flop or you should be ready to ditch them if someone bets into you. The general rule with face cards is you want them to match up with other face cards in order to play them before the flop. In other words, Q-J is playable, while Q-6 is a hand that most players should fold.

Saturns
1. A-10
2. K-10
3. Q-10
4. J-10
5. A-9 suited
6. A-8 suited
7. A-7 suited
8. A-6 suited
9. 10-9 suited
10. 9-8 suited
11. J-9 suited
12. 8-7suited
13. 7-6 suited

Play these hands at your own risk. All can get really good in a hurry. But all of them can be worthless in a hurry as well. If you can get a cheap flop, all are worth hanging around to see if you hit a jackpot like a nut flush or a straight with the list of connectors.

The bottom line is have a plan. If you’re just starting out or playing in your first tournament, you might want to limit yourself to the top three categories on this list. As you feel more comfortable or as the field gets smaller, you could loosen up to include all of these hands. Only if you’ve found a pigeon at your table or if you’re down to heads up should you play many hands that you don’t see here.

Good luck and be careful out there.

You should always consider 2 wins or 2 losses as the beginning of a trend. On the next wager you will act accordingly. This ensures you will never miss a trend no matter how short or how
long it may be.

Your wagers will take advantage of the trend no matter how short it is.

You will get chips of various denominations.

If you bet $5 chips, then you need $5 and $1 chips.
If you wager $25 chips, then also have plenty of $5 chips, and maybe even $1 depending on how accurate you want to be.

After 2 wins you will increase your wager by 1/3 of your last wager.

After 2 losses you will decrease your wager by 2/3 of your last wager. You will continue to decrease by 2/3 on each loss until you hit
table minimum.

In the typical chop trend, you expect a win after a loss, and a loss after a win. So after 1 loss, increase your wager by 1/3. After 1 win decrease your wager by 2/3.

Your first wager should always be 3 times the minimum bet when you first begin playing.

This is the basics of fractional wagering. There are many finer points, tricks and tips that I have developed over the years, but I have neither the time nor desire to go into that much detail.

This method of play is very successful on any of the even chance wagers in the casino. My preference is Blackjack, but I have used it successfully on bac and roulette.

You will not win large sums of money every time you play, but you will stay very close to even most of the time, lose very little when you lose, and you will occasionally win large sums when you hit the
inevitable win streak.

“After 2 wins you will increase your wager by 1/3 of your last wager. After 2 losses you will decrease your wager by 2/3 of your last wager. You will continue to decrease by 2/3 on each loss until you hit table minimum.”

You begin playing at anytime. 3 times the table minimum is your first bet.

You were close:

25 red / win / +25
25 red / win / +50 (2 wins so increase 1/3 to 33.00)
33 red / win / +83 (+1/3 now to 44.00)
44 red / loss / +39 (increase 1/3 looking for win after loss)
58 red / loss / -19 / (2 losses so decrease 2/3 to )
19 red / win / +0 / (after win look for loss decrease 2/3)
6 red / loss / -6 / (after loss look for win increase 1/3)
8 red / win / +2 / (after win look for loss decrease 2/3)
5 (assumes table min.) red / loss / -3

Hope that is more clear. I can tell you I have friends who tried to simulate it with negative result. But I have been playing it live forever and rarely have a losing session, and have never lost.

Here is my ABC casino cash raker winning roulette system. During recent playing sessions I made well over 2k using only 10p and 20p units. The system is a consistent winner at the table. The method of play is really simple , we are playing a 12 number inside betting system based on repeating dozens , each dozen uses 4 small sectors of three numbers grouped as A B and C. Method of play – we don’t play until any group of 12 has not repeated in at least 4 spins then we start to bet from the fourth spin with the progression 1. 1. 2. 3. 4. 6. 9. 15.
An example , the last 5 spins show numbers 14. 22. 19. 8. 27. Looking at the groups these last five numbers seen spun are groups A C A B C , so we now are safe to start betting , starting from group C with the progression shown 1. 1. 2. 3. 4. 6. 9. 15. Always betting the last groups to hit throughout the progression, so in our example if when we bet on group C we are unlucky and a number in group A hits then the next bet will be all the numbers in group A, we are unlucky again and a number from group B hits then the next bet in the progression will be all the numbers in group B. etc etc.. In play the system rarely loses a progression although of course the longer you play the more chance there is of a freak session tugging your bankroll down. Groups cannot go long without a repeat so the odds are we can make profit consistently. Chances are you will win nearly all your sessions with profit.

    1 14 20.
2 21 25. A
3 26 32.
4 15 19.

    5 10 23
6 17 34. B
7 18 29.
8 11 30.

    9 22 31
12 28 35 C
13 27 36
16 24 33

1 . 1. 2. 3. 4. 6. 9. 14. 21. Bet progression.

This Dozen System was sent in from a friend from South Africa. He is a satisfied customer of our book and plays our Barbi system while he waits for this Dozen System to ripen. He says he has an 80% success rate with our Barbi System as long as you follow the rules.

That % is very realistic and will get a little better as long as you concentrate and gain experience. However, we thought so much of this system that we had to include it in our continually revised book. In fact, we now use it in conjunction with The Barbi System. It really works.

The only downside is that this system is what we call a FILL IN system, because you don’t play it continually. Your buy in is for 3 piles of chips. Our Win Walk is 1 pile net profit. Our loss Walk is minus 2 piles +/- from your 3 pile buy in. While you play the Barbi System you wait and watch the table or the Charting board until you see that any dozen hasn’t appeared for 5 missed spins. If a dozen has missed 5 spins in a row you immediately stop playing the Barbi System and play with 1 chip (any value) on the Dozen that hasn’t appeared in the last 5 spins. Since each Dozen is due to hit 1 in 3.16,after 5 spins it’s past due. Will it hit on the 5th spin? Sometimes. If it doesn’t you play it again but increase your bet by 1 chip. In fact, each time you lose you add another chip.

After it hasn’t come out in 5 spins, you stop playing it. Commit to a point and that is it. Between the 5 missed spins before we started betting and the 5 spins we just lost, it has missed 10 times in a row. We’ve seen a Dozen miss 20 times. So don’t press bad luck. Just sit and wait for another Dozen to miss 5 times in a row and start all over. Now let’s talk about what usually happens. It wins. How much you say? Well it differs with each bet.

One Dozen Roulette System

From the chart above you can see it doesn’t pay to play the 6 & 7th spin, as they lose. Once you hit, you stop betting and go back to the Barbi System and you wait for another Dozen to miss 5 times in a row. Now play that one with a chip. So up to and including your 4th spin you are making money. Moreover, on the 5th spin if you win you break even. Remember, you are playing the dozen that hadn’t hit in 5 spins and now you are betting it from the 6th spin to the 10th spin. By now the Dozen probably hit and you made money. Obviously the higher your chip value the more you make. However, don’t go crazy because it also looses. Remember it can miss for 20 spins in a row especially when I have money on it. Money management is key here. Add a chip on each new bet and you will profit every time and on (fifth bet), there is no gain, but you’ve got all your money back. If you lose on the 5th spin stop betting and go back to playing the Barbi System.

This way you make sure it’s not one of those long “20 no-hit” runs, don’t place bets until it hits again (on that dozen) or at least wait until it has missed 8 more spins. That’s 5 original missed spins, 5 lost spins and 8 on hold spins for a grand total of 18 missed spins. At this point it is very safe to go on it again. It probably will not get to that point. However if it does, start betting it again with 1 chip or you could use 2 chips at the start. But you must go up 2 chips on each loss instead of 1 chip increase. Using 2 chips will help you catch up to your previous loss a little faster.

As you know the only problem with the One Dozen System is that you have to wait for a Dozen to miss 5 times prior to betting. You know how impatient we gamblers are to lose our money so we attempt to find something in the interim to play. Any systems that give you the ability to win or at least stick around for a while are fun systems. This system can win big for you but as with all systems you need some amount of luck. Something I seem to leave at home all too often.

Now as far as the above requirements are concerned the “One Dozen” System takes an unusual twist from what we would normally recommend. It calls for playing to the odds and not playing when you don’t see a dozen for 5spins. This stand and wait is somewhat unusual and in most casinos frowned on, however it is good strategy here and key to it’s consistent winning.

Stand and wait prevents you from throwing good money after bad. We are strong proponents in experienced players playing to the odds. The positive effect on staying home for 5 missed spins is key, as is going back after 13 missed spins. Both, good, sound odds.
