Six quick holiday seller tips

Here's a few quick things you can do to get your etsy/artfire shop holiday ready.

1) Make sure you are set up with Paypal to accept credit card payments from those who do not have or do not wish to have a paypal account.

2) Review your item titles. Titles should be packed with every key word a buyer might use to find your items. This is also how Google indexes your items so make those titles count! You should also be using every tag you can.

3) Review your prices & shiping fees. You may need to raise or lower slightly. Do you have a good range of items and prices? Do you have a few things in the impulse buy range of $20 and below? What could you add to fill this need? Is your shipping fair and correct for each item?

4) Update your blog/facebook/twitter with any holiday specials you are offering. If you have a mailing list, now is a good time to send an early holiday special out to your customers.

5) If you have facebook, install the Artfire Kiosk or Sellit app.

6) Create a facebook fan page for your business and add lots of pictures. Once you get 100 fans, you can change the URL.

All Lolafalk handbags and accessories are cut and sewn by hand, and every last detail is accounted for – from the carefully crafted design of each item, to each item’s description, to the overall attitude and style of the brand.

Can you imagine this bird landing outside a village in Northern Iraq being off-loaded by smiling soldiers ...... delivering bundles of fabric, yarn, buttons, beads and notions?

It could happen. Army Major Art LaFlemme's Iraqi Bundles of Love Project (I.B.O.L.) is running out of storage room for the many boxes already flowing in ... and Ramadan just started! Art had to go to his commander to get "official approval" as the need to call for air support to deliver the bundles to nearby provinces is becoming more of reality by the day.

What is this I.B.O.L. thing?

Iraqi Bundles of Love

A few days ago, I posted about the Iraqi Bundle of Love Project. That's my daughter's cat, Shiara bemoaning that she doesn't get to go to Iraq with my bundle of love. Apparently cats the world over are REALLY annoyed by the fact that they don't get to go.

Inside my bundle is a pair of Fiskars scissors that were a bit worn, but still useful, several reels of YLI quilting thread that I won in a raffle years ago and never used, more thread, 2 unfinished quilts that I am DEEPLY grateful to not having staring at me, and more fabric. It's wrapped in a tye dye sheet that was one of my brothers early practice pieces before he became the master he is today.

Of course, now that I have packed & sent one box ... I keep finding more stuff to send. So onto box two. This one has a huge can of buttons wrapped in fleece, a bundle of white lace fabric from my daughter's graduation dress, a package of yellow lace trim and lots more fabric plus more of that sheet to wrap it in.

But that's nothing compared to my mom. She has 4 boxes ready to go and says she might need to send another. She found several large pieces of wool she bought in Chicago that have zero use here in the desert. However, winter is COLD in Northern Iraq where Art's unit is and they will certainly find a good use for them. She is also sending some of her overflowing stash of yarn and quilting magazines. Although they can't read English, we all speak pictures :)

If you want to participate, boxes must be in the mail by September 7th so as to arrive before Ramadan and before Art's unit is rotated out of Iraq.

Remember, you will need delivery confirmation and a customs form. It's $12.65 to send each box. You can ask at your local Post Office for an APO Flat Rate box or just make sure the clerk gives you the APO flat rate if you use a standard large flat rate box. I have Art's address and if you want to play, please email me for it as he has asked that it not be published on the web. DO NOT SEND IT from a contract post office. Go to the actual Post Office to make sure the delivery tracking is done right.

Art said he got 6 more boxes this weekend and he and the unit are happy to have the problem of where to keep them all! So ladies, what are you waiting for? Surely you have extra fabric, yarn, sewing supplies and $13 for a good cause?

Not only is my dear friend Laura Zollar an incredible artist, she has always been so supportitive of my handbag making. It was at her urging that I had my first gallery show and started to put my bags up for sale.

So when she saw a latenight facebook post on my page about our team shop, well there she was again! She recently purchased the Freedom Isn't Free totebag pictured below by TM Venezie Bags.

This is the third sale from our team shop and ensures that we can send a September box to our marine and her unit. We are all proud to be doing this small thing to support our men and women on the front lines with the help of all of you.

Wendy B. Messenger Bag in Fruit Salad by Miss Pretty Perfect

La Toya of Miss Pretty Perfect from North Carolina has some very elegant bags made with upholstery fabrics.

Miss Pretty Perfect handbags was launched in Winter 2007, by Designer La Toya Stevens. La Toya has had a passion for fashion every since she was a little girl. Her mother, Courtrina, taught her to sew at the tender age of 5. Although she never considered a career in Fashion Design, she was lead to it.

La Toya is a two-time graduate of a Fashion Design Program. In 1999, La Toya received a B.S. in Fashion Design and Merchandising from N.C. A&T State University. And in 2002, she received her A.A.S in Fashion Design from Parsons School of Design in New York City. Her reason for obtaining both degrees was because she felt one was not enough. She wanted to experience living in "The Big City" for once in her life. What better time than at that time? She packed her bags and moved to New York to study the actual Design aspect of Fashion Design. It was an interesting first two weeks in "The City" because it was only two weeks before 9/11 took place just blocks away from where classes were being held that morning. Strength was a determinant of why she stayed.

After graduating from Parsons that summer of 2002, La Toya worked as a sewer for a Private Label Handbag Designer in Union Square. La Toya stayed with the company for 5 years. Her handycraft was sold in department stores such as Henri Bendel, Bloomingdals and Fred Segal. La Toya learned handbag construction, patternmaking and problem solving. After relocating back to North Carolina, La Toya began her own line of handbags. The Miss Pretty Perfect brand was born in 2007. The Miss Pretty Perfect line of handbags are made of upholstery Fabric patchwork and leather combinations. Miss Pretty Perfect is a brand that will broaden with time. To come in the future will be a line of women's wear and girl's clothing.

The ideal Miss Pretty Perfect is a carefree, motivated, go-getter who is not easily led. Brown floral over the shoulder bag by Studio23 Art

Christine os Studio23 Art from Michigan uses 100% recycled materials on all of her bags and crowns ech one with a handmade lampwork bead.

I make bags and purses using 100% recycled/repurposed fabrics. I scavenge material from cargo pants, skirts, curtains, upholstery and whatever I can get my hands on. I don't use patterns so there are no two bags exactly alike. Each bag is inspired by the scrap at hand and I usually don't know exactly what I'm making till it's done, which is half the fun! My husband and I also make glass beads by hand using the process called lampworking. We create each bead one by one - melting glass over a torch, adding color and design, shaping each bead till it's just right. All beads are annealed in a kiln for strength and durability. From our finished beads we create unique jewelry, wine charms, keychains and more. To tie our two crafts together, I decorate each of my handbags with a handmade glass bead, giving it that extra special touch that makes it even more unique.

Calling all sewers and quilters

Hey this guy's wife and mom and sisters all say that quilters and sewers are the most generous people on the planet. I think he's right and I am going to pack up an Iraqi Bundle of Love in the next week or two.

Iraqi Bundles of Love is a short-duration project, set to last about six weeks, to surge fabric and sewing materials into the area around which I live in Iraq. It is timed to coincide with both Ramadan, and the departure of my units from Iraq.

It is intended to be a simple project, requiring little effort and little expenditures from those wishing to participate. It is based upon my assessment that sewing fanatics and quilters tend to have stashes that far exceed their actual needs, and that sewing fanatics and quilters are passionate both about sewing / quilting, and about sharing with others.

The general premise is this. I am in Iraq, and I can get mail through the US Postal System. Willing contributors can send to me a flat-rate box of sewing / quilting supplies, all bundled up. I’d open the box, pull out the fully-contained bundle, and hand of off (with others) to our counterparts in the Iraqi Security Forces (Army and others) or the local police, for them to distribute. The stated intent of this operation is to put sewing and quilting supplies into the hands of two types of recipients: locals who desperately need such things, and local sewing co-ops who have received grants or loans (typically to puchase sewing machines, rent space, etc).

Have you got some fabric and sewing notions you can live without? Bet you do, if you think about it. There are very few fabric shops in Iraq and I like the idea of leaving something good behind as our units pull out and giving people a way up to independence.

August herobox is heading for the desert

Thanks to two sales from our team shop this month, we are able to send another jam packed herobox to our adopted marine and her unit. In this month's box, we're sending shampoo, hand sanitizer, baby wipes, MRE taste enhancing hot sauce (I'm sure the folks at the Taco Bell we "liberated" this from would be behind it if they knew where it was going), hot canteen water taste-enhancing sugarfree drink packets in many flavors, energy bar snacks for long patrols, coffee, dried fruit, beef jerky, bug bite salve, some tuna, a packet of notecards and a book of stamps to write home with and for Jennifer especially, a rockin pair of blublockers to tame that desert sun donated by my awesome friends at blublockersrock.com.
