Playstation Vita

The playstation vita is being released February 22 here in the US. I'll be getting it. When the original psp came out I told myself I wouldn't get another psp till the psp2. To me the vita is the psp2. The slim, 2000, 3000, and psp go we're all the same with the same kin of hardware. The vita is a powerhouse. Look forward to an unboxing.

Microsoft Introduces New Xbox 360 Platinum Hits

No more "Greatest Hits". I guess I might get "Gears of War" now.

In a bold move to make "greatest hits" console game packaging that doesn't make one want to stab oneself in the retina, Microsoft has apparently deployed new Platinum Hits box art to retail locations.

Kotaku reader Justin spied the new Platinum Hits design, which may no longer induce vomiting, at an upstate New York Target store, seen on the budget version of Gears of War. Gone is the atrocious miniature box art and old style Platinum Hits border that offended the senses, replaced by a new platinum colored banner with the distinction "Greatness Is Earned." It is noticeably less horrific to take in through the eyes than earlier efforts.

Steve Jobs Running Apple Tablet Development from Home?

I might just hold off on getting that Macbook.

A recent report by the Wall Street Journal indicates that Steve isn't completely out of the picture since he stepped down from running Apple due to health issues back in December. If the WSJ's sources are good Steve is actively working from home on the mythical Apple Tablet (or netbook).

Apple co-founder Mr. Jobs, who is considered the company's creative leader, is also involved in the development of future projects, they say. People privy to the company's strategy say Apple is working on new iPhone models and a portable device that is smaller than its current laptop computers but bigger than the iPhone or iPod Touch.

New Halo Project To Be Mobile, and Everything Else?

Maybe I could be playing Halo on my HTC.

The future of the Halo franchise may not be as straight-forward as you'd imagine, if a Microsoft job advertisement is anything to go by.

The listing - for a software development engineer - suggests that Microsoft are working on a Halo project that transcends the idea of a single platform or genre, and suggests they are instead working on an all-encompassing Halo world, using Xbox, web and mobile to build a new Halo community.

We're looking to blend console, web, and mobile to create an immersive Halo world that follows the dedicated Halo fan wherever they go. We need engineers that can build connected technology while working in a startup environment.

As an engineer on this team, your responsibility will be to deliver a great out-of-game interactive experience that takes the next step beyond the systems found in Halo 3. You will work with artists, designers, developers and testers to finalize design plans, implement those plans, and help coordinate large-scale testing of the out of game Live experience by gamers across the world. Your work also will involve several external teams-including other MGS studios and the Xbox Live team-coordinating development dependencies and design considerations of experience as a whole.

Rock Band for PSP Preview

Something to finally get my psp out of the drawer.

The game is scheduled to be released in North America and Europe on June 9, 2009.

Just about everyone agrees that Rock Band is an awesome video game, but with its mass of plastic instruments, you just can’t play it while you’re waiting for a bus. Luckily, Harmonix has solved that problem with Rock Band Unplugged for the PlayStation Portable. This handheld version of the blockbuster music game wisely doesn’t try to replicate the Rock Band experience. Instead it goes for a different kind of gameplay. Where Rock Band is extensive and social, Unplugged is intensive. Different or not, judging from my time playing it, Rock Band Unplugged works really well.

I’ll start with the similarities: All the trappings of Rock Band are back in the handheld version. You design your rockers, name your band, go on tour, earn money to buy new clothes and instruments and play shows, gradually unlocking the game's 24 venues and 41 songs as you tour the planet. But while the “filler” material is nearly identical to Rock Band, that’s where the similarity ends. Unplugged’s gameplay is very different than the console version's. Where full-scale Rock Band tries to replicate the experience of playing in a band, Unplugged is a more abstract game. It’s more about beat-matching than feeling like you're really playing an instrument and rocking out.

There is no separate peripheral for the game: You are the peripheral, and you play by hitting the PSP’s buttons in time to the game’s music tracks. But in order to keep the “Band” part of the Rock Band brand name, Unplugged presents players with four musical tracks (Guitar, Bass, Drums and Vocals) running simultaneously and allows you to switch between them during the song, based on accuracy. So if you nail the bass line to The Jackson 5’s “ABC,” during the verse, you'll be prompted to switch over to the guitar line and play those notes during the chorus. When you switch (and whether you have to) depends on the mode you’re playing on.

At its most basic, Rock Band Unplugged allows you to play in “Warm Up” mode and play a single instrument through a song. In Quick Play and World Tour modes, you use the shoulder buttons to switch from track to track. I’ve played a lot of Rock Band, and while it’s definitely a different experience, getting a handle on Unplugged’s controls is fairly easy. I spent maybe half a song getting the hang of the game, but after that, it feels pretty intuitive. You could even say it's easier, in that there are four buttons, not five, so no stretching your finger to get that annoying orange note! The game is similar to Amplitude and Frequency two Harmonix-made PS2 games that involved button matching four different tracks of music. So if you dug Amp and Freq (and most people did) you’ll like Rock Band Unplugged.

The controls are split-second and responsive. No problem there. Switching from track to track with the PSP’s shoulder buttons is smooth and makes perfect sense—like most good video game concepts, Unplugged’s mechanics are instantly understandable. You maintain streaks by switching from instrument to instrument. Build up star power with accurate note runs, and turn it on with a button push. Overall, it’s a simple, really fun game with great music, and you could see how perfecting your play would be very addictive. But if you’re expecting the kind of social fun of Rock Band and Rock Band 2, you’re not going to get it here: There is no multiplayer.

Band Survival Mode is the hardcore (or masochistic) way to play Unplugged. In it, all four tracks are playing at once, and you have to keep everyone in “the band” alive by switching from track to track. Imagine running from the drumkit to the guitar to the mic in Rock Band all the while keeping track of your dropping failure meter and trying desperately to keep everyone from being booed off stage. It’s frantic and awesome, and definitely a challenge. I failed out of Medium on a low-tiered song. I can't even imagine the complexity of trying this on Expert with a Freezepop tune.

Rock Band Unplugged will feature a full, in-game store to purchase new tracks. Ten will be available at launch on June 9th. Not that you’ll need them too quickly: The game comes packaged with 41 tunes, which should be more than enough to keep you rocking for a long time. Below are the currently announced tracks. Those marked with an asterisk are exclusive to Rock Band Unplugged for a time, but will eventually be available for download on Rock Band and Rock Band 2.

Saints Row 2 DLC Delayed to April 23

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!. I have been waiting for this and they delayed it. At Least t was delayed to the day after my birthday.

THQ has announced that the first DLC pack for Saints Row 2, Ultor Exposed, has suffered a week delay, and will now release on Thursday, April 23rd.

Ultor Exposed is the first of three planned DLC packs for the SR2. The pack adds a Tera Patrick mission arc, six vehicles, four multiplayer maps and a comeptitive co-op mode, and will run 800 MS Points--$10 for the PSN.

Motion Plus for Wii Dated

I just might buy a used Wii now.

The Wii MotionPlus accessory goes on sale a month earlier on June 8 in the U.S. for US$19.99. Wii Sports Resort drops later the following month on July 26. It is bundled with the Wii MotionPlus add-on for $49.99.

According to Nintendo exec Cammie Dunaway, "Wii MotionPlus represents a new evolution in video game control. The variety of fun games in Wii Sports Resort show off its incredible precision. Developers around the world are busy working on new ways to incorporate Wii MotionPlus controls into inventive experiences for consumers."

With Wii Remotes pricing at $US39.99, $19.99 for a Nunchaku and now $19.99 for the Wii MotionPlus, that means it costs $80 for a fully loaded Wii Remote.

Xbox 360 and DS motion controllers detailed

Motion-controlled gaming peripherals specialists Performance Design Products have unveiled two new controllers at GDC this week – a Wii Remote style stick for the Xbox 360 and a bizarre-looking chunky pen-style controller for the Nintendo DS.

TechRadar has been aware of the development of the Xbox 360's "Gametrak Freedom" ultrasonic 3D motion sensing tech for some time now, along with the first game that will work with the device, called Squeeballs.

Squeeballs is described by PDP as "a collection of over 150 unique challenges that showcases the capabilities of the controller… players can blow up, cook, slice, bat, bowl, shoot and bounce the Squeeballs with greater accuracy than is capable with any other controller."

Xbox Gametrak Freedom

Gametrak Freedom connects to your Xbox 360 via a base unit hooked into the USB input port and is described as a "proprietary and patent-pending ultrasonic 3D motion sensing technology that delivers performance, increased control and flexibility.

"Unlike other motion sensing gaming systems, Gametrak Freedom does not rely on the gamer pointing a controller at the screen, nor does it restrict the gamer to limited movements. The system accurately tracks the true 3D position and precise movements of up to four players anywhere within a given environment. This technology provides players with total control and unrivaled game play opportunities."

TechRadar should be getting a hands on with the new Xbox 360 motion controlled peripheral in the near future.

Nintendo DS phat-pen

If that wasn't enough gaming peripherals news for one day, the company has also unveiled its new SmartStylus device for the Nintendo DS – pictured here – which features vibration feedback and "can include a variety of added features, including LEDs, sound and motion feedback."

PDP is awaiting confirmation that Nintendo is happy to license this device for use with the DS. Should that all be signed off, then the company hopes that both controllers will be on the shelves sometime later this autumn.

Dungeons and Dragons co founder dead at 61

This is a sad day in the nerd world. Dave Arneson has passed away.

Dave Arneson, the man who first created the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game alongside Gary Gygax, passed Tuesday night, his family announced via email.

It may not directly relate to the world of electronic videogames, but it's impossible to ignore the influence Arneson's work has had on the gaming developers we all hold so dear.

Not only did D&D force gamers to think creatively and reason their way to safety, it's also the single greatest source of high fantasy creatures and ideas since Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien. I attempted to come up with any fantasy title that doesn't somehow lift from D&D, and after 20 minutes of contemplation, I'm still drawing a blank.

Sadly, this news follows the passing of Gary Gygax in 2008.

We offer our greatest condolences to Arneson's family and loved ones, and would like to thank the man for making the world a much more interesting place during his time here.

Silver PS3 to be announced at E3?

With the recent news of a Silver Playstation 3 Dualshock 3 Controller to be released in the U.S. in June:

This brings up an interesting thought. The Silver Playstation 3 DualShock 3 Controller is set to be released in the month of JUNE. We all know E3 is June 2-4. Is Sony planning on announcing a Silver Playstation 3 to hit the U.S. at this years E3?

The Silver Playstation 3 was released on March 6, 2008 in Japan and has not seen in the light in the U.S.

Halo Portable? Maybe

Maybe Microsoft is developing a Xbox Portable.

When we're not too busy trouncing Halo 3-developer Bungie in "humpday challenges," we fancy ourselves quite the career builders. And so it was with shock that we found ourselves colliding directly with the enormously popular franchise on CareerBuilder.com, albeit under the auspices of Halo license-owner Microsoft. Apparently the company is seeking folks who not only love Halo but also love "building scalable online infrastructure and websites for large and passionate audiences.

"What does that mean, exactly? The listing doesn't go into as much details as we'd like, but it does say the job will blend, "console, web, and mobile to create an immersive Halo world that follows the dedicated Halo fan wherever they go." Our thoughts first went to iPhone integration of Bungie.net and future Halo community endeavors but then we realized that Microsoft may want to keep whatever mobile application it may be creating on Windows Mobile-based phones. We're hoping for our future-phone having selves that this isn't the case.

Could this be true? Apple implementing a recoding software to the iphone. Jailbreakers have been doing this for over a year. Check it out. Its Called Screenie.

One of our trusty ninjas just blessed us with some exclusive iPhone 3.0 shots. Things like detailing a video recording application, more settings options, an accessibility entry, and even showing that Apple could possibly be integrating voice dialing, too. Hit the break for the rest of the snappies!

UPDATE: Our ninja hit us up to add some following goodies:

The final 3.0 firmware is said to support OpenGL ES v2.0.
There are various references to “ChinaBrick” in some of the 3.0 beta firmwares. Could this a reference to a Chinese-specific iPhone with no 3G and no Wi-Fi? It would be pretty comical if it was…
We’re also told that there’s a very, very strong possibility video recording will be specifically for the new hardware iPhone and not backwards compatible with the iPhone 3G. Not something entirely new, just more strikes against current users getting some video love, though!

EA DICE has released a couple new screenshots for their upcoming Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Due out sometime in 2010, the sequel to Battlefield: Bad Company continues the story of Bravo Company as they head 'somewhere' that seems to have a ton of cold weather. Siberia?
