But that is going to happen only if you’re careful enough to let it happen! There are a few things you should really look out for when deciding to work at home.

When you set out to give the work at home business thing a try, you’ll find out that this was just the easy part! The hard part is to discover which one is right for you.

With all these so called “opportunities” that flood the internet, you should be very careful in choosing a work at home business. To help you, I have put together a few simple rules :

Rule #1 : Try to avoid “get rich quick deals”

Now that’s a golden rule! Usually, when something sounds too good to be true then it probably is!

Oh, I know these sound appealing and of course you would like to get paid for doing nothing (so would the rest of us!). But don’t you think that if these people had the magic solution to making big money they would use it instead of trying to sell it to you for whatever price?

It’s sad to know that so many people end up feeling frustrated when they realize that they have wasted their time and hard earned money. There are no magic tricks! Commitment and hard work instead, can make you rich.

Rule #2 : Find a program that you really like and can work with

Another rule that’s essential! Say that you come across a program that requires you to sell life insurance. You hate insurance people, you think they’re full of hype.

So what, the compensation plan looks great! What would you do? Would you join the program? Could you picture yourself selling life insurance even if you hate the very idea?
The answer is that you’re never going to make any money doing something you don’t like!

The point I am trying to make here is, that you should go on and find out everything there is to know about the program you are interested in. Just spend some time doing an essential reading through the available material (company website, related articles etc).

Try to get an overview of how the system works and if you need more information or if you get confused , go ahead and ask the person who referred you to the program for help. Doing your homework always pays off.

Rule #3 : Make sure you know exactly what you’re getting for your money

There are just too many companies out there that present you with sales letters as long as a book but not even a hint as to what you are actually getting in return!

If the product they’re selling is that good and is going to make you so much money, why hide it? Why only mention it in the last few paragraphs?

Ok, I know, it’s the way sales are closed. Still, you would like to know exactly what you’re buying. It could save you a lot of grief!

Rule #4 : Perform a background check on the company

The longer it has been around, the better. This way you know that you’re dealing with an established company that will not go bankrupt 4 months after you join!

It has been known for people to lose their online businesses and commissions owed to them for this very reason. Choosing a quality company is essential but can prove critical to the survival of your work at home business.

Rule #5 : Make sure you’re going to get all the help that you need

It’s just typical for someone to join a program, pay his membership fee or buy a product and then be left in the dark, not sure what on earth to do next!

Again, I’m repeating myself here but this is important, try to get an overview of how the system works, who your upline people are and how they can help you.

If you need more information or if you get confused, go ahead and ask the person who referred you to the program for help. In this way not only will you get an idea of how the program is structured but you would also be testing your referrer to see if he/she will respond promptly to your need for help.
But first, you have to have an idea of how the program works.

Rule #6 : Check out the compensation plan

Ok, so you’ve joined a program which ,hopefully, is going to make you rich. Do you know how this is going to happen?

It’s not necessary that you know every detail about the compensation plan from the first day that you join. But still, wouldn’t you like to know if you’re getting 5% or 60% commission on an average sale?
After all, it takes the same amount of effort to generate a sale. Wouldn’t you like to be paid more?

Rule #7 : Do not spend much at the beginning

A legitimate work at home business should be able to operate at a minimum/low cost. You should not have to invest a lot of money in any home business. At least not in the beginning.

When you do decide to invest some money into your own home business, this should be your own decision, not someone else’s and must arise from your understanding that a business is what you make it.

There are more rules that I can add to these and make a really long list but this is not my goal. My goal is to provide a clear path, a few steps that should be easy to follow through the minefield of schemes and “get-rich-quick” deals to a company you can really trust.

Using your own common sense is as important as having these rules in mind when looking for an opportunity or a work at home business.

Your decision to join a program should be the result of considering facts and should not in any case come from mere curiosity. Keep in mind that there are very few true work at home opportunities out there and you have to find the one that’s perfect for you!

I received a couple of intriguing e-mails this week…

The first e-mail made me extremely curious simply because of its length - it was extremely short, but offered to ‘make you one million pounds in only two months’.

Now, as you can imagine, I receive quite a few of these communications each and every week and I usually like a little more detail before I say either ’send me some more info’ or ‘no thanks, this isn’t something that I’ll be offering to my members’.

But, because this was so short… I was prompted into a reply. I don’t know if this was deliberate or whether it was just lazy on the part of sender. Anyway, it worked… and I replied.

The next message amazed me, it simply said… again… ‘I can make you one million pounds in 2 months, we have to meet’.

Well, by now I was extremely suspicious, and I haven’t yet received a response to my e-mail which simply read ‘Have you made this money yourself?’

Which brings me onto the point of proof…

Although I find some amazing ideas, if I can’t make them work for myself… or in the time that people claim that it’s possible, then I simply can’t go out to my members and say ‘this works’.

Proof is an incredibly powerful marketing tool that simply must be included in order to succeed…

For example, I’m working with someone at the moment that has an amazing health product, and I’ve suggested to her that the headline of the website should be immediately followed by a testimonial, such as ‘I was suffering with x, until I found y’.

Incredibly powerful, yet so simple.

I’m also working with someone that’s in the process of setting up their own Private detective online business. Again, we are using proof at the entry point of the website.

Moving on…

The second e-mail that I’d like to talk about was someone questioning whether they could do this for themselves…

The e-mail was a series of questions that, to me, read like excuses… One of which was ‘I don’t believe that I have the entrepreneurial skills required to do this, what do I need?’

I thought about this long and hard, as I didn’t want to give a standard text-book response… I answered all of the initial questions with examples of people that I’ve worked with, or my own personal experience…

Then, I wrote the following:

An entrepreneur is someone that is prepared to invest Ј5 to make Ј20, knowing that worst-case he/she will get the Ј5 back…

Now, to explain this… I went on to say that if you hadn’t researched a particular market, or a product price, you’d be guessing - rather like the average gambler on horses on a Saturday.

However, if you knew all there was to know, and you’d run some tests of your own, you’d be pretty sure that your small investment was going to return you a profit.

And to continue with the analogy of a gambler, this time you’d be a professional gambler - that has spent all morning going through the form guide…

When drop shipping, you lose some control over inventory levels, leaving it in the hands of your supplier. This increases the potential that a backorder situation can occur without your knowledge.

The truth is, there is no way to guarantee that an item will be in stock. This is a simple fact of drop shipping. It is a trade off, but one that we think is well worth the benefits. Once you’ve learned how to reduce the possibility of a backorder the benefits of drop shipping become even greater. Here are some top tips for minimizing backorders with your drop ship business.

Monitor Quantities on Hand (QOH)

The most obvious thing you can do to protect yourself from backorders is to closely monitor quantities. Doba provides a data export tool that can help you monitor supplier inventories. If you are able, monitor quantity trends before listing an item in an auction.

If selling items at an online auction, you’ll typically want to only list items that have a large number of items in stock. However, if you have monitored quantities before hand and notice a product isn’t “flying off the shelves”, you may be comfortable selling items that have a lower number of items in stock.

Run Shorter Auctions

I once listed an item on eBay® that had only one item left in stock. Even though I knew the item to be a slow moving item, listing something with a quantity of just one had me a little worried.

As such, I decided to run a three day auction. The faster the auction got over with, the sooner I could drop ship the item to my customer, and the less I would have to worry about it. I wasn’t concerned about losing potential business from having a shorter auction because listings typically get the most views and bids in the last 24 hours anyway.

Cancel the Auction if the QOH Reaches Zero

Along with monitoring QOH’s before listing an item, you’ll want to continue monitoring quantities throughout the auction. If you notice quantities dropping each day, you’ll want to keep an even closer eye on it.

You can’t drop ship an item that isn’t there. If the quantity ever reaches zero, go into your auction right away and end it early.

Drop Ship an Item to Yourself to “Pad” your Inventory

Shipping a few items to yourself to pad your inventory is perhaps the most effective fail-safe to prevent backorders from having a negative impact. This is particularly advisable for items that are regular sellers for you.

Usually, you’ll only need to keep one or two items in your personal inventory, even if you typically have several auctions with the same item running simultaneously.

If an item goes out of stock, you’ll always have the one or two items on hand that you can ship out and still have time to go through and end all your other auctions early until the item comes back into stock.

Entrepreneurs are natural idea generators and it’s no secret that confusion and procrastination are common side effects in even the best of the best. What separates the wheat from the chaff is the way they handle the multitude of ideas and still get things done. You see opportunity where many others don’t and the trouble arises when you want to bring all of the ideas to life at the same time. It may also be difficult for you to say ‘no’ to pursuing a new idea or opportunity when it’s presented because you love ‘new’ and ‘exciting’!

Some days you may feel you’re chasing after many ideas at the same time while accomplishing no real progress on any one of them.

In order to beat Shiny Object Syndrome it’s important to pick ONE idea and focus your undivided attention on it. Of all the ideas you have in your head right now, which one has the potential to make you the most money?

This is the idea you want to focus your complete attention, energy and resources on.

Many other great ideas and opportunities will come your way as you work on bringing your best idea to life, but until that happens, keep a running “Great Idea/Opportunity” list where you can keep a record of these items for future attention.

All of those great ideas and opportunities are useless to you if you can’t bring them to full completion within an effective time frame.

With your best idea at the forefront, decide on how to implement a structured plan. Map your plan into bite-size, manageable pieces and once done, focus your attention on completing the first step. Only once you have completed that step, move on to the next.

Keep in mind, throughout the process distractions will surround you. When presented with an opportunity, albeit a good one, learn to say ‘no’ if it takes you away from your primary goal.

It’s often hard for entrepreneurs to say ‘no’ but chasing many ideas simultaneously will only put you further and further behind.

So, where do you start today? Here’s a brief guideline to help you along:

1. Make a list of all the ideas and opportunities on your ‘to do’ list right now.
2. Pick the one that will make you the most money and develop a manageable plan to complete it.
3. When distractions arise, ask yourself, “Will this bring me closer to my goal or take me further away from it?”
4. If they take you away from your primary goal, learn to say ‘no’.
