On an average, there were more than 700,000 jobs lost a month. Staggering statistics don't bring a lot of hope to people who looking for income to support themselves, their families, and worst of all, their bills. Yahoo! Finance stated that people have given up because of discouragement. Either sickness, going back to school, and family responsiblities are sending people over the edge of worklessness. States such as North Dakota, Mississippi, and New York are among the many areas of the USA that are on the brink of lost hope of finding a job.

Are people looking and applying? Yes they are. Are people being interviewed? Yes they are.

Certain factors according to this article has been perceived, such as lack of jobs via geographical areas, men are giving up more than women, and lack of positions that match their personal financial obligations. Networking, career workshops, and planning are key essentials to developing more confidence in these difficult times.

Contact: jbutler@purposeandplan.org for questions. Overwhelming, relaxing, stressful, uneventful? However you see your time spent or the schedule before you, you got to get things done.

My father always stated this saying, procrastination is the thief of time. Your lagging, your putting off, your throwing things on the backburner can be detrimental in your life. Your professional growth depends on you taking charge, grouping your strategy, and making it happen. But your feet won't move!

Procrastination was a huge part of my life in college and new post-graduate life. I hated to do anything that required me to do tooo much. But I learned that unless I did the task, it was going to stay right there until I got my lazy booty up and completed it. Now, I make a to-do list and I scratch each task off. At the end of the day, I am satisfied at my day's productivity. So, ask yourself what are YOU putting off until tomorrow???

*Your resume.
*School/Degree Pursuit
*Weight Management
*Your Studying
*Reading

Don't let your laziness steal your production.

Our generation is known as the microwave, pop generation. Instant gratification is normal feeling of the younger generations, because we believe that "right now" and entitlement will bring us comfort and success. Many people jump jobs for various reasons:

*More money
*Better benefits
*Better incentives
*Favorable Hours
*Boredom
*Bad Upper Management
*Workplace Bullying
*More experience
*Position Title
*Hate their current job
*Career Changes

Nevertheless, it is good to have a stable job history. There are a few employers who look at job jumping at being a red flag. They feel that you will leave, especially if you are overqualified and overexperienced. It could also mean that you cannot maintain or handle authority. Now circumstances may arise, but also make sure that your "job jumping" is accounted for.

People ask me..."is this a good time to change jobs?"

Now, we are in the middle of a recession of course, and it's a huge blessing that you have a job. If there are no talks of downsizing or layoffs, then you are fine. Keep doing the best you can do at what you do at your current position.

"is this a good time to change careers?"

Maybe, but it depends. Most people are looking for 100% pure "recession-proof jobs". To tell you the truth...there is no such thing. Even healthcare is seeing a downgrading of nurses, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals. But not as severe as your administrative/clerical, financial services, and other lower level employees. Now there are careers out there that may be more stable, but not recession proof...everyone knows you can probably strike gold in healthcare, education, & energy-efficient careers.

When you jump, jump with a plan. If you have a job now, stay put, but make a plan. Go to school part time, get a certification or license, take some additional classes.

There is going to be a little time before the job market becomes flooded again, so take note that a plan is worth your time. Think about where you want to be professionally and build upon that.

I'm a Capella Learner!

Oh how I kicked my feet up on June 12, 2009 when I submitted my last assignment to my Ethics class at Capella University as I finished up my Spring quarter. I'm not going to lie, taking 2 classes this quarter was very very challenging. For this reason, I had to put my coaching practice on hold. After all, school's first right? After I got off to a great start, somewhere around the middle, I lost focus. I had no idea what exactly was going on at the time, but I knew that I was getting behind on schedule. Time management was definitely a struggle, but I had to pull myself by my bootstraps and get with the program. I really got my husband involved to help out as much as possible on housework and the baby. Every quarter up until now, I only took a single class....

With my husband pitching in even more, I was sure to do alright. I started getting back on schedule with my courses, but it certainly wasn't easy to do so. Online learning does take energy and discipline. In fact, I have to have more discipline now than undergrad...why ??? Because in undergrad, I lived in a single world, in a messy dorm, with no job, and no real obligations. Dinners consisted of Ramen Noodles and cheese toast, and my alarm clock served a minimum purpose....to alarm me, I can get 20 more minutes of sleep before I wake up and drag my slippered feet to my 8am class.

Now, I have a family, a career, other outside community obligations. It's a little difficult to have everything in line and be in school at the same time. But if you are determined, you can do it. You just have to tweak things a little. That's why I suggest to people with families or kids, get someone to help you as much as possible. Having social and moral support is extremely essential to succeeding in distance education.

So how do I like online learning? I love it, it makes sense for me to go to school online. I'm a woman on the go and I want to do things on my own time. I go to class when I can sit down and concentrate. Not on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 2.5 hours in the evening. I don't knock graduate students who attend brick and mortar schools at all. But I save on gas, I save on commuting in bumper traffic, save on babysitting and time with my family, and I get an accredited and acceptable degree on top of all that.

The only thing is, if you can deal with not having an instructor in front of you, then you can do it. Email and phone calls are best communication methods with instructors, not bad if you can wait a day or two on an answer.

In 3 quarters, I will be a recipient of the Master of Science degree in Counseling at Capella University. I do not have long, I cannot wait. Next quarter, I will have 2 more to complete... Survey of Research Methodology & Life Planning/Career Development.

Look into your eyes in the mirror, and I'm not kidding.... look into your eyes. Examine yourself and think about where you are now. Really think about it. Do you get upset? Do you get frustrated? Do you actually scrunch up your mouth? What about the shaking of the head? You got the tools you say....you have some experience....you have ideas. But you say, "I'm too old", "I have children", "I have debts", "No one will take me seriously".

Everywhere people make excuses and they push plans and dreams further away out of fear. Your dreams are your motivation, or should they be? Many times we get excited when we daydream about the lives we want. Most people have tried so many different professional ventures that people have "stopped having faith" in them. So what do you do if this happens? There are so many online forums and literature to read to get you motivated. Not having any positive thoughts could very well kill your pursuit and you may be more prone to giving up prematurely.

*Have a strong plan in line. For some, acting before planning can be fate, however, not planning at all could be a downfall and greater chance is, that you may fail. Write down a plan that will serve as a blueprint for your professional future, whether it's for a business, college enrollment, or applying for a new job.

*Before you abandon your thoughts, try. It's so easy to give up on an idea, especially if you feel that you are getting older, or have to many family obligations, or feel that life has passed you by. What would you do if you never tried? At least you will not have many regrets. Try and attempt your dreams, you never know where they will take you.

*Research. Be a research-a-holic on your dream. What trends or demands are out there? Do you have a niche? What about the funds? Become a master on the things and ideas that you want to become reality.

*Battle your Negative thoughts and rephrase them with "I can's", "I will", and "victory"! Negativity is easy to think of, it's easy to feel defeated, and difficult to be positive. It's a mental battle that you will come across everyday. Your fear can turn into courage if you just focus on the end results. The final results are totally up to you. Stay committed to however long it takes and remind yourself, that YOU are worth it.

The numbers for May 2009 are around 350,000, when January 2009 it toppled around 750,000. Is it improvement or just an ignorance on the media's reports? Well if the numbers are lower than January, could it be that there are less people working than January? I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic.

To add to this notion, they explain that jobs will most likely become available before the end of this year? Is there a positive outlook for job seekers?

So what do you do? A part-time job may be a great idea to earn some cash. Need ideas for a good part-time job?

Here are 5:

1.) Retail: Okay, retail is starting to pick up a bit, not a lot, but there is some progress where people are gaining some financial confidence in shopping again. Retail part time positions are usually flexible and you are able to have a little fun along the way (don't forget those discounts).

2.) Bartending: Believe it or not, you could actually make a decent part-time income as a "liquor handler". College students and night owls could benefit from bartending. Clubs usually offer a base wage and tips are given. People love to party and they love drinking. Bartending schools usually take 3-6 weeks and only a couple of hundred dollars to enroll.

3.) Homemaker/Pet-sitter: If you need extra income, consider cleaning houses for a while. There was woman I knew that paid her sitter $60/hr to watch her 4 dogs for 6 hours a day while she worked. A lot of money?... yes it is. You get 3-4 clients, you just might turn it into a full-time venture.

4.) Waitressing/Hostessing: There are a lot of eating venues that are looking for friendly faces to wait on customers. But remember, always keep a great attitude to rack in tips. Couple of hundred dollars isn't bad.

5.) Lawncare: Maybe you are in a neighborhood and you see a lot of upkept yards, consider taking your lawn mower to houses and asking if they would like to take a break and get their yard cut by ya....extra $$ for groceries, utilities, etc. A man in my neighborhood makes $200/day on the weekend from this and yes, we pay him, along with others, every 2 weeks to cut our yard.

Temporary, substitute teaching, and babysitting, are a couple of additional jobs that you could do to get you on your feet. Extra income couldn't hurt especially if you are trying to bridge gaps in income and cashflow, need additional experience, or fund a business.

You get excited when you think of staying home with your children, turning in your resignation to your boss, or being able to determine the growth of your business. But it's mind boggling that 50% of small businesses fail in their first year, according to the Small Business Association. Why? #1, most of us think very small, we make excuses about why we cannot succeed. "There's competition, I don't have much money to invest, or "I've tried starting businesses in the past and it didn't work."

Excuses. Excuses. Excuses.

A recession is good and bad for us, yes, it gives people the chance to really do some self evaluation. What things you are good at, what have you learned in your past professions and how do you think your skills benefit you in owning your own business? It is bad for business owners in some cases, because the demand may not be there. Nevertheless, when it comes to thinking big, your strength and power to overcome circumstances are there. Look at your bills, your children, your goals for the future, does that make you think higher than in the past?
Flyers, business cards, and a blog or website is very inexpensive. Thinking of hiring a business consultant? If you have very small funds, your answer is probably no. The library, world wide web, and bookstores supply a wealth of knowledge on business practices. Take the time to read personal development books and success strategies to see how other successful business people leaped over obstacles for their dreams.

It's called thinking big! Thinking small can hurt you, it can destroy your self esteem, and lower your confidence. You're busy, maybe kids, volunteer work, your job, and organizations keep you up on your toes and there are only 24 hours in a day. Your online classes are getting the best of you, you get frustrated, behind in your work, and worst of all, you feel like quitting. So is quitting your best option? Nope!

Online learning is not traditional; it's actually pretty difficult to stay on task, on top of readings, discussions, or assignments. 2.3 million people are estimated to take the plunge in online learning courses from individual courses to enrolling in online universities. But contrary to popular belief, online learning retention is up 50% than traditional universities and colleges. People are finishing school in their pajamas!

So tips on staying alert, focused, reminded, and determined to complete your online degree or certification successfully?

*Get a Calendar: Calendars are reminders that can assist in documenting assignments, important papers, online discussion posts, and study times. Not only write in your calendar but refer to it 3-4 times a week. Put a reminder in your cellular phone or electronic device to remind you to get up and study.

*Get active in the courseroom: It shouldn't stop at posting your assignment or response and logging off until the next week or so. Take the time to respond to more than one student, start forums elsewhere, connect on Chat Networks.

*Embrace your learning experience: Your actions and reaction to online learning can influence another prospective student to pursue their academic goal. Plus, embracing your courses will fully prepare you for your new job or new position. So knowing all you can, will actually influence companies, friends, and family members that online universities is definitely an asset to their professional development and their confidence in your skills/training.

*Involve your family in your academic journey: Ask a spouse or family member to help you with the children or household chores while you get some reading in. My husband is extremely compliant when I ask him to do chores or entertain our toddler while I read or post assignments. Have a strong support system in your corner.

*Keep reminding yourself about your graduation time: If you are unsure of your estimated graduation date, ask your academic advisor. They will help you calculate your approximate time of completion. If you see your goal mentally, you will be able to strive for it.

I wish you the best in your online endeavors.

Jayna is a Graduate Learner in the Masters of Science in Human Services program at Capella University. Estimated graduation date is March 2010. More and more business owners and money savy consumers are using consultants to save money and increase profitability. So you need something to do, you need something to refocus your energy, you need a way to use your creativity. Here are some ideas on independent consulting:

*Beauty Consulting: Major cosmetic companies have generous commission structures. But behold, most cosmetic companies do have sign-up fees, Avon, Arbonne International, Mary Kay, and BeautiControl are just a few. These companies are considered network marketing, which means you make very generous income when you make big sales and recruit others to do the same.

*Jewelry/Novelty Consulting: Just like the cosmetics industry, many jewelry and adult novelty companies have some network marketing concepts as well. Premiere Jewelry, Passion Party, and others have a great commission/pay scale.

*Certifications in HVAC/House Inspection/General Laborer: If you are pretty skilled with your hands and considered the handyman to friends and family, it's good to get a certification in an area that will give you a leg in additional income and may become a fruitful business for you in the future if you build some good referrals.

*Beauty Schools & Beauty Industry: No matter how many women or men who say they are financially struggling, grooming is still a priority to many. And grooming is usually preferred by a professional. There is still a need for licensed cosmetologists, massage therapists, barbers, and nail technicians. If you are creative and have a love for making others feel great about themselves, look into your local career colleges for more information. You will be glad to know that many of these schools take federal financial aid for students in need.

*Become a Life Coach: This field is very broad and fairly new to the U.S. Life Coaching is helping others with goal-orientation and motivation. The good thing is, there is no necessary credentialing, semi-bad news is, there is no regulation for this type of career. Another good thing is, it is a legitimate field. Certifications can be acquired online to help with your professional reputation.

*Web design/Marketing/Graphic Design: Computer whiz's equipped with Creative Design. Many consultants in this area are finding it easy to get work for aspiring entrepreneurs who need a unique touch in their websites or marketing materials. Some are looking for Marketing Managers to help them come up with marketing techniques. Training for this type of work can be acquired at your local community college for low costs and online through distance learning programs.

Other forms of independent consulting: Image/Fashion Consulting, Organizational Development Consultant, Training Consultant, Legal Consultant, Computer Repair Consulting, Internet Marketing, and Academic Tutoring

You're left out in the cold, you have plenty of obligations, children, and nonetheless, bills. So what do you do? You loathe, you get angry, and worst of all, depression suddenly sinks in. But you are not alone by any means. Be mindful of your skills, your acquired assets, and the goals you have. Don't stop at the unemployment line and settle for defeat, transfer your skills to freelancing, enroll into a university or community college, think about working for yourself for a while.

The bills don't stop coming so why should you? Fear is in the eye of the victim, and you, my friend, are a victor. Consider yourself relieved from answering to a manager, thankful for unrestriction on lunch breaks, drama-free from office gossip. Your life begins now, take this as a lesson, do some soul-searching, and move on to bigger and better things. They are certainly ahead of you.

There have been some controversial stories of some of the contestants and even the Miss USA winners in the recent past, but the newest whirlwind story of Miss USA contestant, 1st runner-up, Miss California answered a question that angered some and made others quite cheerful.

Miss California, Carrie Prejean, 21, of San Diego, CA was asked a question by one of the 3 judeges, the "Queen of Media", celebrity gossip blogger and openly-gay, Perez Hilton, on same sex marriages. Prejean responded in a way that sent Hilton on an anger movement across cyberworld and what Donald Trump believed "cost her the crown." Miss California, a devout Christian, stated that she believed that marriage was between a MAN and a WOMAN. Of course, many individuals hated her answer and the judges who happened to be supporters of gay marriages were in total shock. This resulted in Miss North Carolina to be crowned Miss USA 2009.

So what does Miss California teach us?? That we stand up for the right and true Word of the Lord. She did not ban or leave her beliefs to wear a bejeweled crown. She knew that something is greater in store for her in the long run. God rewards them who represent Him openly and honestly. I greatly commend her for her comments and I hope God provides favor and blessings upon her life.

Many of us conform to beliefs and try to justify other's lifestyles. Homosexuality is wrong, it is a sin, but it is a sin (like others) that can be fixed and changed under God. What shocked me about this story is that California is one of the most liberal states in America, it isn't one of the Bible-belt states like Georgia, Tennessee, or Alabama. It's California, home to one the gay capitals of the U.S, San Francisco. Miss California is a great role model to teach young people to not be moved from your values, believe and stand up for it. Be stern and be upfront, do not justify what is wrong, but stand up for what is right and be a soldier in Christ. Because in the end, his Glory and Righteousness will reign forever.

We have clearly spoken and voted for our next President.

On November 4, 2008 at approximately 10:00 p.m Central time, news networks and headlines were beamed when California submitted their 55 electoral votes in favor of Barack Obama, the Democratic Presidential Candidate. Along with California, Ohio, Pennsylvannia, and New Hampshire's electoral votes supported Obama, shutting down John McCain, the Republican Presidential Candidate.

California, Oregon, and Washington state pushed Obama over 270 electoral votes, in which Democratics roared in victory and other nations across the globe became ecstatic.

However, for John McCain-(R.)Arizona's Senator, who was disappointed, pledged his support to the new President-elect in any way he can. The speech by John McCain was seen as sincere, despite his defeat. But for his faithful supporters across the nation, there were feelings of hurt and despair.

Barack Obama is not only the 44th President of the United States, he is the nation's first African-American President. This position holds great sentimental value for minorities everywhere, especially in the hearts and minds of African-Americans. The post-civil rights' era, in the United States, still experienced prejudice and discrimination in all forms. However, it was proven that on National Voting Day, color was not a huge factor, but the needs of the American people were.

Obama pressed through the color lines of those who still saw race as an issue and he prevailed. In his corner, wife, Michelle Obama and his daughters, Malia and Sasha shared in his success as becoming President-elect. By Barack Obama's side, serving as his Vice-President, Joe Biden (D.), a Senator from Delaware since 1972 will also join him on Capitol Hill to start re-directing the path to prosperity for Americans.

With a staggering economy, to the two wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, to uninsured or underinsured health-insurance holders, to the damaged housing market, to unexplainable higher education tuition hikes, Obama has a challenging and difficult road ahead of him. His inauguration will be January 20, 2009, in which he will officially take on the position as Commander-in-Chief. So as Americans, no matter what color, gender, or political party, must unite and come together as "one nation under God".

Americans had lost confidence and hope in our government, until the day that Barack Obama, committed his position as Leader of the Free World, pledged to bring back the land of opportunity and the prosperity that our nation once had. Impossibilities have become limitless for people of color and minorities . Let us join our next President in making our childrens' lives and generations to come a more safe, prosperous, and hopeful future. May God Bless and Keep America!

Joe Biden, a United States Senator, of the Democratic party. This "blunt" politician has a whopping 35 years in the Senate and of course, he is a great expert in foreign and domestic issues.

Now, Obama has of course, been a huge target of McCain and other conservatives of being "inexperienced" and now that we have an addition to the formula of "change" (issue instituted by Obama), people are now saying that Biden has "too much experience"?? Some people are so hypocritical!

As you may or may not now, I am a huge supporter of Barack Obama. I support his views as a citizen of the middle class young America. For eight years, we have been under the leadership of a ill-spoken, oil and gas tycoon, illiterate, and untrustworthy president. And now that McCain has accepted the nomination of Republican presidential nominee, it is apparent that many are in between candidates. McCain has full support of Bush, wants to remain in Iraq (for whatever reason), and wants to support a gas tax that will put more money in gas executive's pockets!

So what does this have to do with personal development?

Everything. Being a total person, spiritually, emotionally, physically, and mentally does indeed involve being actively participating in your country's and local governmental issues. You can help change the next generation. Our well-being, money, education, and daily lives are directly reflective upon our leaders' decisions. Although we pray and know that God is the ruler of our destinies, we are in part responsible for children's livelihoods. So rock the vote...or should I say, Ba-Rock the VOTE!

God Bless!

For years, we have seen uptight Presidents, in my lifetime, there has been one real down home President (Clinton). So I think Americans will feel that they can at least relate to the fact that yes our potential President need fashion tips and his wife loves clothes and his children are being children and very well spoken. In no regards to race, Americans want to feel that their next President is empathetic and likes to laugh and joke with his family as well as take care of business.....

According to Yahoo!, courtesy of the Associated Press, Jamie Lynn Spears, baby sister of the controversial entertainer, Britney Spears, gave birth to a little girl, named Maddie several weeks ago. Spears was also a star of a hit TV show on Nickelodeon called "Zoey 101".

What has me confused is that she is 17 years old and she is not the first teenager to give birth out of the institution of marriage and unfortunately, she will not be the last. However, I think it is appalling that the media gives this circumstance so much ammunition and attention. What is this teaching our little girls, when they have role models that are being praised for their negative acts? Is our media going too far?? I shook my head in shame and disbelief when I read this story. To elevate this to a front page of a popular gossip magazine, is very unnerving and begins a cause of concern.....
