End of Mobile Flash

The war is over…well at least on the mobile platform.

On Wednesday morning, Adobe delivered the eulogy for its multi-media Flash platform for mobile, stating the company would no longer invest resources in porting its once-indispensable cross-browser technology to smartphones and tablets.

It’s a startling admission of failure from a company that vehemently defended Flash and its mobile strategy in the face of Apple’s refusal to allow it on the iPhone and iPad. Adobe even took on Steve Jobs in a war of words over Flash’s viability as a mobile platform, all in the public domain.

But the writing was on the wall for Flash years ago, and Adobe knew it. With no Flash announcements to be heard at its Adobe Max conference earlier this year and with the company slowly beefing up its toolkit of Flash alternatives, Wednesday’s move is in step with Adobe’s broader strategy of migrating its loyal Flash developer base to a new era, one where mobile platforms reign supreme.

I long for the days when we get rid of flash on the PC’s and Mac’s. Sadly that day is not quite here yet…but its on its way!

OneNote 2010 Updated For Better SkyDrive Syncing

There is a great new update available for MS Office 2011 and in particular OneNote 2011. Improvements are always welcome but this is overdue. This update improves the sync capability of the OneNote when storing documents in the SkyDrive Online system.

Microsoft States:

With over 200 million Microsoft Office files and OneNote notebooks already uploaded to SkyDrive, we wanted to make accessing your content in the cloud even simpler from within OneNote 2010.

After you’ve applied the OneNote update, the new Open from the Web feature becomes available. To use this feature, click the File tab on the ribbon and then click Open.

While you’re signed in to your SkyDrive account, you’ll see on the right side of the screen a list of any notebooks on SkyDrive that are not currently open in OneNote 2010.

With a single click, you can now open any of these notebooks without first having to manually navigate to the SkyDrive website.

New features on Hotmail making it closer to Outlook

There is some new RH click options available for Hotmail which makes use of the HTML5 engine in IE9. This seems to be just one of many small incremental improvements from the Hotmail team.

Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector compulsory update, with major bug fixes

Microsoft released an compulsory update to its Outlook Hotmail Connector today to its customers, updating the version number to 14.0.5139.5001. All existing users of the connector will be prompted to update to the newer version in order to continue using software. This update fixes many bugs in the current version of the connector, specifically:

Several send/receive issues are fixed.

The Outlook junk email filter within Outlook is turned off for Hotmail accounts (this was erroneously flagging good mail as junk). Junk messages are now detected at the Hotmail mail server. Any entries you made in Outlook for the junk email filters (Safe Senders, Blocked Senders, and Safe Recipients) continue to work correctly and synchronize between Outlook and the Hotmail mail server.

Fixes for hangs and crashes experienced when sending meetings using the Hotmail Connector and when adding a new Hotmail account to an existing profile.

Fix for an issue where Windows Live contacts’ birthdays and anniversaries shifted by one day when synchronized with Outlook.

Fix for an issue that blocked synchronization of the Category property in an Outlook contact with Windows Live.

All the best Windows Mobile apps are now migrating to Windows 7 Phone. YomoMedia has announced a completed migration to Windows 7 Phone.

This is a brilliant Phone 6.5 App will it cut the cloth as Phone 7 App?

Yomomedia is the best at merging RSS feeds on the Windows Mobile 6.x platform but I wonder whether its going to be good on the Windows 7 phone. By the looks of the demo its very impressive.

Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0 Released

Microsoft Security Essentials, released back in September 2009 as a free replacement for the subscription-based Windows Live OneCare, has been updated to version 2.0 today. The final release carries the build number 2.0.657 and includes new features such as:

Windows Firewall integration – During setup, Microsoft Security Essentials will now ask if you would like to turn the Windows Firewall on or off.
Enhanced protection for web-based threats – Microsoft Security Essentials now integrates with Internet Explorer to provide protection against web-based threats.
New protection engine – The updated anti-malware engine offers enhanced detection and clean-up capabilities with better performance.
Network inspection system – Protection against network-based exploits is now built in to Microsoft Security Essentials.
