I've been able to distinguish the 1991 original from the 1995 reissue by the actual sound from CD rips of the respective discs. Is there any copy of the 1991 original that can be scanned well for a place like discogs? I worry that people will keep mistaking the reissue for the original under the assumption that there's no difference, when there really is! 1995 version is much louder!

Although it's hard to be exact from a pic and videos ("Visiting Hours" from The Shed), I believe Tim was playing a 1994 Japanese Ibanez Iceman IC500. This I can tell from the dot fretboard inlays, white pickguard and machine heads, chrome Ibanez logo and black truss rod cover. MIJ Pre 2000 IC500s are very rare with only 200 ever made and are broadly regarded as excellent, connoisseurs guitars.

In contrast, the guitar currently pictured appears to be a later IC400 from the early to mid 2000s. Still a good guitar - but what Tim has here is a special, practically unique instrument.

Iceman IC500 specifications.
    ICEMAN set-in neck
    Mahogany body
    Medium frets
    Bound Rosewood fretboard
    Pearl block inlay
    Gibraltar Standard bridge
    DiMarzio D Activator neck pickup
    DiMarzio D Activator bridge pickup
Master Volume, Tone and 3-way switch

I was at this one. One of Sarah's last gigs I think. Cardiacs were supposed to just play for one night, which was heaving and brilliant, but the next day the band the Marquee booked originally didn't turn up, so back came Cardiacs for another go. I got a phone call saying "come to the Marquee again", so off we went.

Unfortunately, it was a very small audience, mostly of people expecting to see the band who didn't show up, and consequently didn't like Cardiacs very much and threw what Tim described as "dirty toilet" at the stage. Afterwards we went to the pub together, which was nice.

This be a lovely record!

Full of hopes and joys!

I understand the band (Mr Smith) made it with basically no cash, and despite all the odds the end result even today is damn impressive!

When is was younger my faves off this one were RES and To Go off And Things...now i think they're Jibber And Twitch, Wooden Fish On Wheels (outstanding!) and Gina Lollabridgida (so happy).

Play it in the car with your children...nay, play all Cardiacs records in the car with your kids, but play this one for them first methinks.

Timmy Smith was a true genius right from the word 'go'.

Considered by many to be (along with Sing To God) the greatest record ever, and Cardiacs best.

It is a work of bloody genius!

Best moments for me are In A City Lining (beautiful), I'm Eating In Bed (dark and wonderful), Dive, Icing On The World, Victory Egg (maybe greatest song ever) and Whole World Window (makes one cry).

Overall this record for me isn't the masterpiece that On Land And In The Sea is, or Heaven Born, or Sing To God, or Guns. However, it is incredibly important!

'The woman with the clap takes me round to the back, to the man with the crocodile smile, who scares me to my hands and knees, but should i break my fall?'

This is a perfect record.

For me it ranks up there with Sgt. Pepper's, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Pink Moon, Loveless, California, Hot Rats, and You.

It may even be the best (psychedelic) pop record ever made. Although Heaven Born is another close contender.

There isn't a duff track on the record, but the religious moments for me are, Two Bites of Cherry, Leader of The Starry Skies, Fast Robert, Mare's Nest, Buds And Spawn and EVERSO CLOSELY GUARDED LINE!

A must-own for any music lover.

'Shriek and dance to a different noise
Shriek thin fat girls
Shriek Thin fat boys'

More like from a concert after May 1989 (it used to say 86) as Bic (aka Christian Hayes) didn't play live with CARDIACS until aound May '89 - He features in CARDIACS Cinematographical Film 'All That Glitters' where he performs 'Bics Bit'. Before that he was in a band called RING that supported CARDIACS and was an 'ordinary shop girl' helping out Mr Hiles (I 'fink). Also half of the tracks weren't even written in '86 and come from 'On Land & In The Sea' which was recorded in Autumn 1988 and didn't feature Bic at that point.

Considered by many to be the ultimate...along with A Little Man And A House.

An outstanding album.

Life changing tunes like Eat Up Worms Hero, Dog-Like Sparky, Fiery Gun Hand...ah fuck it!

All of it! Both parts are amazing.

Beautiful, psychedelic pop music!

songs like Fairy Mary Mag, Foundling, Dirty Boy, Wireless, change your life and outlook. Really.

Not my fave Cardiacs records, but both parts are for sure masterpieces!

Take it all in!

My god this band are the missing link between: Crass, Dead Kennedys, The Residents, Faust, Apatt, Zappa, Idiot Flesh, System Of A Down, Mr Bungle & Mike Patton spin offs in general.. With a really edge of Syd Barrett thrown in for good measure! Everything I hear by this band probably sounds as fresh as the day it was commited to tape. The opening to Bellyeye sounds like a funky slinky Hendrix out take but then comes in with a surging disjointed verse that would of been worthy of Pavement! The infulence of this band on contempory music cannot be over looked, I even hear supergrass fisting Smashing Pumpkins in this!

In short this album is an absolute masterpiece I don't want to repeat the previous comments which are note worthy. My fave Cardiacs has to be the early EPs "Too Many Irons In The Fire", "big Ship" & the trully amazing "Seaside Treats!!".. The last one purely because end to end it is a seamless, over looked mini epic that puts prog to shame..

Utter genius!!

An album that never fails to raise a smile and turn a frown upside down.. Acid psych prog punk brilliance!!

The pinnacle Cardiacs record.

Dark, abrasive, distorted, heavy, heartfelt beautiful pop masterpiece.

Maybe Tim's answer to britpop, shoegaze and metal...and tops all here, even MBV's Loveless.

I believe this album was very misunderstood by the old hardcore fans. I think they felt alienated by heavier, more abrasive and distorted sound Tim was introducing...but he was only bringing his unique brand of pop music ten steps ahead as ever.

Lyrically maybe the most dark and personal of Tim's offerings.

A must-hear work of genius (or course).

Probably my fave...with On Land And In The Sea, and ghostly Guns close by.

Not a duff track here. All serve an important
purpose.

'Walk in shadow, walk in dread, loosefish walk as like one dead'

Please enjoy.

Such a great record!

Could be their best...

Spell With A Shell, Wind And Rains, Cry Wet Smile, Jitterbug, Sleep All Eyes, Come Back Clammy, Clean That Evil Mud, SIGNS...

Yeah, another masterpiece...like when Heaven Born came out a lot of people didn't get this, but i think they do now cos is serves an important purpose in music. It's eerie and beautiful.

More Tim genius. Well done Tim!

I do love this record. It's such a nice and kind record. All the tracks are very pretty and easy. Tim is the master of psychedelic pop.

I hope he releases the new solo record soon. Apparently the the new one has that Dream Dress tune on it.

'Cardiacs unplugged', in a many of speaking...

A very organic album this is!

If you enjoy that soft and ethereal girl voice singing with Tim on most Cardiacs records, that would be Sarah Smith (sax). You hear a lot more of her beautiful voice here. Her and Tim have very unique voices that blend perfectly together. I've never thought much of Bill Drake in the singing solo department, but i suppose he contributes some lush piano to this lush record. However, this beautiful record would not exist without Tim's brain.
