As we prepare to celebrate the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday this Monday, please remember that there will be no BID services provided on Monday, January 16th. This is one of the four days throughout the year when the BID is closed.

We ask for your assistance in emptying public space trash bins if needed, monitoring store fronts for ice and debris, and, if you have a safety concern, please call 911 for police assistance. Our clean and safe teams will be out in full force again on Tuesday.

Additionally, Metro will be closing several stations on the Blue and Orange lines in and around Capitol Hill this weekend for scheduled maintenance. Beginning shortly before 10:00 PM this evening and continuing through closing Monday, free shuttle buses will replace Blue and Orange line trains between L'Enfant Plaza and Eastern Market, making intermediate stops at Federal Center SW and Capitol South stations. Capitol Hill Restaurants Gear Up for Winter Restaurant Week

Restaurant Week is one of the most anticipated weeks of the year for Washington, DC foodies. Typically held in both January and August, DC Restaurant Week offers diners three course meals for a great value; Lunch is $20.12 per person, dinner is $35.12 per person. The approach used by the Capitol Hill BID to maintain a positive workplace environment was among 10 qualified entries in the category of Downtown Leadership and Management. This category features comprehensive and unique organizational approaches, projects or programs that improved the effectiveness of downtown management organizations.

In partnership with HillFest 2011, three Capitol Hill restaurants are encouraging everyone to "Donate by Dining Out on Capitol Hill" today, September 22nd.

Choose a participating restaurant for lunch, happy hour, or dinner and a portion of your bill will go to Jan's Tutoring House (JTH). JTH is a one-on-one tutoring and enrichment program in Capitol Hill. Over 300 students have completed the program since the house was founded in 1990; since 2004, 100 percent of students who have participated for three or more years have graduated from high school. JTH serves first through twelfth graders.

Join the volunteer tutors and help support Capitol Hill's youth by patronizing the following Hill establishments this afternoon and evening:

Kickoff Fall This Weekend at the Barracks Row Fall Festival on Capitol Hill

Fall arrives this week and what better way to celebrate the season than at Barracks Row Main Street's Fall Festival on Capitol Hill. The festival will be taking place this Saturday, September 24th from 11:00am - 5:00pm between the 500 and 700 blocks of 8th Street, SE.

The Capitol Hill BID is sponsoring a booth at the annual festival and we will be giving away fun Hill goodies. We'll also be asking visitors to take our annual survey to ensure that we're doing our best to keep the business district clean and safe for all.

HillFest - a celebration of all things Capitol Hill - is in full swing!

HillFest is a two-week series of events sponsored by HillRag and produced in partnership with CHAMPS - Capitol Hill's Chamber of Commerce - and the Capitol Hill BID. The event began on September 10th and will run through September 24th. HillFest celebrates all things Capitol Hill, from H Street, NE down to the Riverfront.

HillFest kicked off with the inaugural H Street Chalk Walk sidewalk chalk festival. This Saturday, HillFest revs up with the annual H Street Festival and will wrap up with the Barracks Row Fall Festival on Capitol Hill, which is an event produced by the Barracks Row Main Street Program.

BID Team and Family Outing Celebrates Success

The Capitol Hill BID held their annual team and family outing on Monday, August 15, at Six Flags America in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. The weather was not cooperative at times, but that didn't stop everyone from having fun! Thankfully, our luncheon and awards ceremony was held indoors at the park's Coyote Creek saloon. The rain stopped just as everything wrapped up inside so that team members could enjoy the amusement park with their families.

Team outings are a great way for the BID to recognize the success of our team members and reward them for their efforts to make the Capitol Hill business district a beautiful destination for residents and tourists alike. After eating a delicious lunch and watching an interactive Bob the Builder stage show, BID president Patty Brosmer and operations director Andrew Lee announced the award winners.

It was inspiring to hear the men discuss their transition from a life of self-destruction and despair to a life as productive, hard-working members of society.

Not only do the awards ceremonies maintain a positive work place environment in the BID, but your support also means a lot to the "men in blue." Something as simple as a smile, a wave, or even a friendly "hello" on the streets of the Capitol Hill BID help boost our team members' morale so they stay positive and motivated.

Restaurant Week Begins Monday - Will you be dining in Capitol Hill?

Every DC foodie has been dreaming about it all summer long - Restaurant Week 2011. The highly anticipated event is presented by the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington (RAMW) and begins Monday, August 15th through Sunday, August 21. Numerous restaurants within the Capitol Hill BID will be participating and we can't wait to see what they have in store for diners.

Zest Bistro (735 8th Street, SE) has already posted previews on their Facebook page, including an heirloom tomato salad with fresh mozzarella with a balsamic drizzle. They've also showcased a southwest chicken risotto.

Metro's Orange and Blue Lines to Share Track in Capitol Hill Area This Weekend

If you're making plans to use Metro to get in and around Capitol Hill this weekend, be prepared to add at least twenty minutes to your travel time. According to WMATA's website, Metro will be making improvements to several of their rail lines starting Friday at 10:00pm through closing on Sunday; this includes the Orange and Blue lines that run through Capitol Hill. The Orange and Blue lines will share one track between Eastern Market and Stadium-Armory as they replace rail fasteners to provide a smoother ride.

President Obama Visits Ted's Bulletin on Capitol Hill

The President loves grabbing lunch in the BID! Last week, Mr. Obama made a stop at Good Stuff Eatery on Pennsylvania Avenue, SE for a hamburger and fries. This afternoon, he stopped at Ted's Bulletin on Barracks Row and had lunch with some of his campaign volunteers. We hear he had a hamburger and fries at Ted's as well!

NBC Washington was inside Ted's Bulletin for the President's visit, and took some great photos. Ted's is known for their delicious homemade pastries; you can see poptarts sitting on the President's table. Hopefully Mr. Obama and his campaign volunteers were able to enjoy the delightful treats in front of them before heading back to work.

BID Ambassador India Person and Marketing Manager Kelly Maslar saw the President's motorcade turning onto 8th Street, SE and were able to take a picture as the crowds waved to the President.

Feeling the Heat? Here's How to Cool Off in DC

At last summer has arrived! Temperatures are on the rise along with the number of tourists walking around Capitol Hill. However, there comes a point when the heat and humidity are just too much to handle! DC's Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency has put together a list of ways residents can "Beat the Heat" this summer, including public swimming pools, street showers, cooling centers and more.

Our Clean Team and Ambassadors are also impacted by the rising temperatures, and the BID takes every necessary precaution to ensure the health and safety of its team members.

Andrew Lee, Director of Operations, does a great job of frequently checking the forecast and current temperature. "Our policy is to bring the teams in if the temperature gets above 95 or below 20 degrees," he stated. "Heat index can be a tricky thing so we're constantly out checking on the men, bringing them cold water and encouraging extra breaks." Team member hours are adjusted so that they can start earlier in the morning and then leave by 1:00 or 2:00pm before the heat is too much to bear.

Often the BID hosts classroom refreshers on safety, standards, and other performance-related topics in the office when the weather is inclement. The health and safety of our Clean Team members and Ambassadors is a priority, and extreme weather reminds us to be extra cautious.

Metro Closings to Impact Capitol Hill Area on Memorial Day Weekend

As many of you start thinking about your plans for the long Memorial Day weekend next week, please keep in mind that several Orange and Blue line Metro stops in and around Capitol Hill will be closed next weekend for maintenance work.

Metro stops closing in Capitol Hill include Capitol South, Eastern Market, and Potomac Avenue.

The following information is courtesy of WMATA:

During the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend, there will be no Orange Line service between the Federal Center SW and Minnesota Avenue Metrorail stations and no Blue Line service between the Federal Center SW and Benning Road Metrorail stations from 10 p.m., Friday, May 27 to closing on Monday, May 30, as the transit agency replaces four rail switches at the Eastern Market Metrorail station, which is a National Transportation Safety Board recommendation.

Metro will operate free shuttle bus service to ALL STATIONS between the Federal Center SW and Minnesota Avenue and Benning Road Metrorail stations during that weekend. Metro encourages customers to use alternate travel options if possible in this area during the Memorial Day Holiday weekend. While bus shuttles will be available to get around the closures, traffic congestion is expected to be challenging as the Stars, Stripes and Spokes motorcycle event at RFK Stadium that weekend is expected to attract a crowd of 100,000. All weekend work will begin at 10 p.m. Friday nights and conclude at closing (midnight) on Sunday.

Need to get around the Hill next weekend? Consider taking the DC Circulator to get around. We now have extended Circulator hours in Capitol Hill for the Union Station-Navy Yard route. This includes Saturday service from 7:00am until 9:00pm. Because the Nationals have baseball games all Memorial Day weekend, that means there will be Circulator service until midnight on Friday, May 27 and Sunday service from 7:00am until 9:00pm on the 29th. The Circulator is just $1 to ride and we encourage all visitors and residents to take it to get around. Please follow the link above for information about the Union Station-Navy Yard route, including a map of all the Circulator's stops.

Bike to Work Day - Friday May, 20th

Dump the pump! Avoid waiting for a bus or metro train! Why not bike to work? Next Friday, May 20th, the Washington Area Bicyclist Association and Commuter Connections are hosting Bike to Work Day (BTWD). BTWD is an event that celebrates bicycling as a clean, fun, healthy way to get to work! There will be a total of 49 pit stops throughout the region where riders can stop to take a break, meet neighbors, get a free Bike to Work Day 2011 tee shirt, and refresh before finishing their ride to work.

The Capitol Hill BID is partnering with Capitol Hill Bikes to provide a pit stop in the Capitol Hill neighborhood! The pit stop will be located outside of the Eastern Market Metro station from 6:30am until about 8:30am. We will be handing out free BTWD tee shirts to registered participants along with snacks to re-energize riders! Capitol Hill Bikes will be on hand to pump tires and provide information about their store on 8th Street, SE.

DC Police Commander David K Kamperin stated that, "We do not have any specific threats, however, additional vigilance and reporting is requested. To report suspicious activity or behavior, call 202-727-9099, for in-progress threats and emergencies, please call 911."

The Capitol Hill BID has four ambassadors that provide for "extra eyes" throughout the business district of the neighborhood. Not only do they report any suspicious activity that they may see, but they are also extremely helpful when it comes to Capitol Hill. They can assist you with anything from where to catch a bus to how to get to the market to the best place to grab a bite to eat! If you see one of our ambassadors on Capitol Hill, don't hesitate to say "Hi!"

So what are the steps one can take to have the RWW team remove graffiti from their property? First, contact Andrew Lee, Director of Operations for the Capitol Hill BID at alee@capitolhillbid.org. Next, you will be required to sign a Graffiti Removal Authorization document, allowing the RWW team to do what is necessary to remove the tagging. Smaller taggings can usually be resolved by using a special chemical remover, however, it is often necessary to completely paint over the graffiti. The sooner we can get to the site to remove the graffiti, the less likely it is for the tagger to return to the site and add new taggings.

The RWW team can also take care of graffiti on smaller objects which are often targets for tagging. Items like mailboxes, parking signs/meters, and newspaper boxes are hit on a regular basis, so don't hesitate to contact Andrew Lee if you see this kind of tagging in the BID. If not removed quickly, these small taggings can become big problems.

DC Circulator Extends Hours to Capitol Hill Route

Due to the high demand of the DC Circulator bus service in Capitol Hill on evenings and weekends, the service hours will be extended for the Union Station-Navy Yard (Blue) route starting in April. The bus used to run regular service from 6:00am - 7:00pm on weekdays only, and extended service until midnight on Washington Nationals baseball game days. Now the Union Station-Navy Yard service hours will be 6:00am-9:00pm weekdays and 7:00am-9:00pm on Saturdays, with extended service until midnight on Nationals game days still in effect.

The promotional theme for the Circulator this summer will be "Join the Local Movement" which hopes to generate an increase in ridership by encouraging residents to use the Circulator to support the many great local businesses, festivals, cultural events, and landmarks that DC has to offer.

Cycling enthusiasts unite! The Pedal Pushers Club is hosting the first annual Bike Swap on Capitol Hill next Saturday, April 2nd, from 8:30am until 2:00pm. The Bike Swap will be held in the North Hall of Eastern Market and is a great place to meet local bicycle related non-profits, trade bike parts, purchase a used bike or pickup some bike gear.
