What are the odds of Cantona becoming Manchester United manager?

Rumours have abounded of Sir Alex Ferguson’s impending retirement at the end of this season as he hits 70 years of age, and an astounding 26 years at Manchester United. While he has been coy on when he would actually be retiring, and having reversed a decision to do so nearly ten years ago, rumours have always been strong that he has been putting his retirement plans in place.

Intriguingly, his succession plan has been rumoured to include Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, who left Barcelona at the end of last season. Let’s take a look at his former protégés who have turned into managers.

The likes of Mark Hughes, Steve Bruce, Bryan Robson have all hit the managerial trail, with varying results. More recently, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been proving his worth, winning the Norwegian league with Molde and was a leading contender for the Blackburn hotseat amongst others.

What about the King, who retired at 31 in his prime? He has primarily been an actor, with his only managerial experience of sorts being that of the French beach football team. More recently, his work with football has seen him join the New York Cosmos.

So would the King accept the job given the opportunity?
“I would say, ‘United is special, of course I would do it. Today I’m with the New York Cosmos, but if one day there is an opportunity, why not?” he said.

What are the odds that Eric Cantona would one day become the Manchester United manager? Just like playing on partycasino.com, the odds can go either way. Currently it seems that Pep Guardiola is odds-on favourite to become the new manager, though Cantona is still within the top ten favourites.

Cantona Plays At Stone Roses Gig In Lyon

Eric Cantona appeared on-stage at a Stone Roses concert in Lyon, France on Monday evening. He sang alongside Justice Tonight – the Hillsborough campaign band consisting of former Clash guitarist Mick Jones, The Farm and The Mighty Wah!’s Pete Wylie – who were the support act for the Manchester band.

Cantona joined the band for a rendition of The Clash’s hit Should I Stay Or Should I Go?

The Farm’s singer Peter Hooton said: “The atmosphere last night was unbelievable, it was played in a Roman amphitheatre and was a truly unique experience.”

“When Cantona came on he just brought the house down. I spoke to him about the campaign backstage for a bit, and he said he knew about the fight for justice and fully supported it. He was fully aware of the background, too, and how long we have been fighting for, and how significant it was he came out on to the stage with us.”

Cantona: Nasri’s celebration a retort to journalists

Eric Cantona has stated that Samir Nasri’s goal celebration after scoring against England at Euro 2012 was a way of saying piss off to the French media.

“The guy feels attacked. Why not? I hope that the criticism was constructive for him; they wounded him and caused him to rebel,” Cantona told Le Monde.

“If you look at it, it was him saying ‘thank you motherf***er journalists’.”

The former Leeds man went on to state that the money pumped into the game by the media is the reason that modern players get paid so handsomely.”

“Football is a system where players are the main actors. Where there is football, there are television channels that pay hundreds of millions of dollars for broadcast rights and you, journalists, you sell your newspapers talking about football because it is the most popular sport.”

“If there was no TV, no sponsors, the players would pay for a jersey. So to push the argument to the extreme; the media’s coverage of the sport is primarily responsible [for the players' high wages],” he concluded.

Eric Cantona has won a public vote to find the Best Celebration in the Premier League’s 20 Seasons Awards.

Cantona was the preferred option of the hundreds and thousands of voters from around the world for the nonchalant way he acknowledged his goal against Sunderland at Old Trafford in 1996.

Cantona’s sublime strike – itself one of the 10 contenders for Best Goal of the 20 Seasons – saw him run from the halfway line, play a one-two with Brian McClair and then impudently chip the ball over the advancing Sunderland goalkeeper Lionel Perez.

With Old Trafford in raptures, the mercurial forward slowly pirhouetted on the spot, surveying the scene and calmly taking in the magic of the moment, before eventually holding his arms aloft as McClair arrived to celebrate his brilliance.

Upon hearing that he had won the award, Cantona said: “That’s the only thing I won? For a king like me it’s not a lot.”

Cantona received a record five nominations in the 20 Seasons Awards – for Best Goal, Best Celebration, Most Memorable Quote, Best Player and Forward for the public and panel Fantasy Teams. The Frenchman was named the Premier League’s Overseas Player of the Decade ten years ago, and has been nominated for a record five awards: Player, Goal, Forward, Quote and of course, Celebration.

Cantona beat an emphatic Lomana Lua Lua acrobatic routine and Jimmy Bullard’s choreographed effort with Hull to pick up the award.

Cantona shortlisted for Premier League 20th anniversary awards

Eric Cantona has been nominated in 5 categories of the Premier League 20th anniversary awards.

Cantona has proven to be a dominant figure from the past two decades of English football despite his seemingly short five year stay in the Premier League. He is shortlisted in five categories, more than any other player or manager. Among them is a nomination for best player, a shortlist of 10 that does not include Wayne Rooney or David Beckham.

Interestingly enough, Cantona’s infamous quote “When the seagulls follow the trawler, it’s because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. Thank you very much.” – is nominated in the Best Quote category.

Cantona is also nominated for best goal, best goal celebration and as best striker.

How winners are decided
The awards are being given by the Barclays Premier League to celebrate 20 years since its launch.

The shortlists were drawn up after votes from national newspapers, and the winners will be decided either by a panel or via a public vote at www.premierleague.com.

The winners will be announced over several days, starting on May 3, and culminating in an awards ceremony on May 15.
