500D rather better than 450D

I’m a newbie to Digital SLR Camera, to start my first DSLR, i’m consider only those economic camera. Canon 1000D and 450D is what in my consideration, the two cheapest DSLR among canon product. After i do some simple comparison and also some advice from my friend, i decide to focus on 450D. Because there is not much price different between 1000D and 450D, with better specification, 450D is the better choice for me.

What my friend tell me to buy a DSLR is, start with a low cost camera, and buy a good lens for it. His philosophy is good lens can still be used when upgrade the low cost DSLR to better model, but cheaper lens is not suitable for better DSLR. Besides, what i get to know from him, lenses of DSLR is much expensive than a body of DSLR. Lenses of DSLR, is as important as the engine of a car.

So, 450D is already in my mind to start my DSLR career. But just few moment after that, i found the latest model of Canon EOS 500D, the successor of 450D. With 15 megapixels resolution (compare to 450D’s 12 megapixels), ISO 100 to 3200 (for 450D is 100 to 1600), and most important, it adopt the DIGIC 4 image processor, compare to 450D’s DIGIC 3.

Now i’m still looking for those who own it and write their comment online.

Preview Test: Canon EOS 500D Digital SLR

Canon's EOS 500D is a great addition to its collection of mid-range digital SLRs. The new camera is well-built, with a 15 Megapixel CMOS sensor, a large 3'', 920 000 pixel screen and HD video.

The model that we tested was a preview, so we can't draw any firm conclusions, but it certainly gives a good preview of what we can expect from the 500D.

Handling

It's hard to avoid comparing the 500D with its predecessor, the 450D. The basic structure of the two cameras is identical, and they are almost exactly the same size. What has changed, though, is Canon's choice of materials. While the 450D sometimes felt a little lightweight, the 500D is a more serious proposition, and we liked the new, more comfortable grip, which makes handling the camera much easier.

In general, the interface is much the same, with only a few small changes in the camera's controls. The white balance control, for instance, has moved to the four-way control joystick, leaving room for the record button. At the same time, the click wheel at the top of the camera now gives direct access to video mode. Both of these modifications make it easier to switch between taking still photos and recording video, one of the key new features of the 500D.

We would have welcomed some more significant changes, such as adding a second scroll wheel on the back of the camera. The ISO control is at the front of the grip, meaning it can quickly adapt to ambient light conditions, even if reaching it isn't very easy.

Although the 450D also had a 3'' screen, the 500D now has a VGA resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, which is much easier on the eye. Using the menus is much easier, and photos appear sharper. Two proximity sensors automatically turn the screen off when you bring the viewfinder up to your eye to save battery life and avoid distractions.

Focusing has changed little either with manual focusing still a treat. The mirrors producing a nice bright image in the viewfinder that's a pleasant 0.87 x version of what's falling on the sensor.

The same nine-point autofocus system struggled a little in some of tests, in particularly on still-life scenes. We found that we had to take the same shot several times, sometimes abandoning contrast-detection autofocus and just focusing manually. Hopefully the production version of the 500D will resolve some of these problems.

In LiveView mode, where the shot you're about to take is represented on the screen rather than in the viewfinder, autofocus is not much faster than on the 450D. Despite the inclusion of face detection, the contrast detection that forms the basis of Canon's autofocus is too slow for everyday use and is best-suited to indoor environments. When the autofocus is based on phase detection, instead, the 500D performs much better, even in low light.

Image Quality

The sensor on the 500D isn't quite the same as the one on the 50D, which was faster and with a powerful set of microlenses. Nevertheless, the test shots we took with our prototype 500D were pretty impressive. Electronic interference is well-handled right up to 1600 ISO, and you can certainly make use of photos taken at 3200 ISO. Above that, at 6400 ISO and 12800 ISO should be used with more caution, with noticeable blurriness and several dead pixels.

Such high settings are a welcome addition, though, and are useful in low light and work well for black and white.

For the most part, having a 15 Megapixel sensor is more a marketing coup than a surefire sign of better quality photos. Indeed, taking such high-resolution snaps can be counter-productive, as it can lead to JPEGs that are anywhere from 4 to 11 MB and RAW files of up to 30 MB. Saved at a colour depth of 14 bits, these huge RAW files should, in theory, produce excellent images, but it's hard to see a real improvement in most photos.

Some useful auto correction systems are available, which picks out more details in darker areas at the expense of a slight loss of overall contrast.

The lens that ships with the 500D (a 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS) is already available and well-known. It's the same lens that comes with the 450D and gives great quality photos for the price. Photos are nice and sharp and the optical stabilization is excellent.

New on the 500D is an automatic correction for vignetting caused by a large range of lenses, but Canon is yet to develop a system to account for the various chromatic distortions that various lenses are known to produce.

One final point to note is that the 500D comes with a very complete set of software which allows you handle RAW files, organize your photos and remotely control the camera itself.

I've had the T1i for about almost week now and after some extensive use, here are my thoughts:

1. 15.1 megapixel sensor. Yes, the high megapixel count is impressive, but keep in mind that, as you approach higher resolutions, you need to ensure the lens on the SLR can resolve that much detail. Sadly, the included 18-55mm IS lens is functional, but the high resolution really shows the so-so quality of the lens. Even if taken at the proper focus, pictures can appear soft with this kit lens. Shots I have taken with Canon EF-S 17-85mm and EF 70-200mm L lenses are crisp. I don't have any gripes on image quality. There are some issues with noise on the higher ISOs that don't seem to show up on the Nikon digitals, but overall, the quality is amazing for the price. Skin tones, textures, colors are reproduced very accurately.

2. Digic 4. The Digic 4 processor appears to process/save the 15 megapixel images in the same time (if not faster) than the Digic III processor on the XSi (even in RAW+Jpg mode). I have also noticed that at higher ISOs, the sensor and the Digic 4 produce images with less overall noise compared with its predecessors.

3. LCD. The 920,000 pixel LCD screen is large (3"), crisp, vibrant and fully visible even in bright sunlight. In comparison, the Canon XSi SLR (which the T1i replaces), also has a 3" LCD, but with 230,000 pixels. The viewing angle is great as well and the LCD can easily be seen nearly 180 degrees around.

4. ISO 12800. Canon and Amazon are correctly identifying that the T1i maxes out at ISO 3200. Some less reputable dealers are listing an ISO 12800, which you should disregard. The ISO 6400 and 12800 settings are expanded ISO settings. The pictures taken on these two settings are ISO 3200 images pushed to ISO 6400 or 12800 by the Digic 4 chip before saving to the memory card. These pictures are extremely grainy and contain a lot of noise to the point of only being usable as for snapshots or adding an artistic effect to certain compositions.

5. Penta-mirror. That Canon is still using one in the T1i is disappointing. The penta-mirror viewfinder image is functional, but still noticeably darker than that of the penta-prism viewfinder in the Nikon D90 (which is the T1i's main competitor). I really would have preferred if Canon had kept the XSi's 12.2 megapixel sensor, forgone 1080p video altogether, and maybe upped the cost of the camera slightly to cover the production cost of using a penta-prism in the T1i. Honestly, unless you are massively cropping your images, or creating large photos, the difference between 12.2 and 15.1 megapixels really is negligible.

6. Size. This is the same body as the XSi, and therefore a bit on the smaller side compared to other digital SLRs. I have small hands, so the T1i is comfortable for me. If you have big hands, I can see this being a very difficult camera to use over an extended period of time. If you haven't handled a Canon XT, XTi or XSi, I would suggest you go to a store and hold the T1i yourself before purchasing it online. (I will upload a picture of the T1i in my hands to the user gallery for a size reference.)

7. HD Video. Yes, the Canon marketing department made a horrible marketing decision and pushed the T1i onto shelves limiting the 1080p recording to 20fps (frames per second). Recognize this as a marketing gimmick that allows them put a 1080p sticker on the camera box. The 1080p @ 20fps is fine most times, but seems a choppy if you have a lot of action in the frame or are panning quickly. The T1i's 720p video is recorded at 30fps and is clean, smooth, and sufficient for all but the most discerning consumers. One major criticism though is that the sound is recorded in mono, AND there is NO input for an external microphone.

A lot of pre-production reviews of the T1i criticize its inability to automatically autofocus while recording. I wouldn't put much weight in this criticism, mostly because neither of the other two SLR cameras with HD recording capabilities (Canon 5D Mark II and Nikon D90) can automatically autofocus while recording either. What you can do with the T1i is pan/zoom the lens and then press the AE lock (*) button to make the camera autofocus on the new subject (all while recording). A problem with using the AE lock button to have the camera autofocus is that the microphone for the camera is on the front upper left of the body near the lens mount. Therefore, the lens motor noise is picked up just as much as ambient sounds. Even with my quietest Canon USM (ultasonic motor) lenses, this lens motor sound is pretty loud in video playback. Although, remember, you can always manually turn the focusing ring on the lens to get your subject back into focus. It's not easy, but after a little practice, it's not all too hard, either.

Ultimately, you shouldn't let the HD recording limitations sway you one way or the other. This is an SLR camera -- not a video camera. The HD video is a great feature, but if you're looking for something primarily to take video, look elsewhere. There are much better, cheaper VIDEO cameras out there which can record true 1080p.

8. Record button. For some reason, the record video button is next to the LCD screen (the same button used for direct printing). The first few times you take video, you'll intuitively find yourself using the shutter release button used to take pictures. The reason for this switch is that you can take a still picture while recording video, although, doing so will interrupt the recording.

9. Battery life. My first fully charged battery only lasted about 250 shots (no flash), but all charges since have given me in the range of 500-700 shots per charge. I'm guessing the first charge had such a short life because I spent quite a bit of time learning the camera, its menus, and settings.

10. Live View. I honestly can't review this as I haven't used it too much yet -- I prefer using the viewfinder. One feature I can say is nice is that, on the LCD, you can digitally zoom in on a section of your shot to ensure your shot is properly focused. This, and the fine focusing, can really help if you're into macro-photography.

11. HDMI cable. The T1i has an HDMI Type C output on the body to allow you to directly display pictures and video on an HDTV. A minor criticism is that the HDMI Type C cable is not included in the box. You have to buy it separately. It would have been nice if it were included, as it's not an expensive cable.

Conclusion. The T1i is a bit on the light end, yet the construction still feels solid. For the camera's price point, you'd be hard pressed to find any digital SLR out there which gives you all the capabilities and growth range of the Canon T1i. The camera is intuitive enough for those new to photography to pick and learn easily, yet configurable enough for advanced amateurs. If video is not a big deal for you, then get the Canon XSi. There is very little the T1i has (other than ISO 3200 and a sharper screen) that the XSi doesn't. Plus, with the release of the T1i, you can probably pick up a used XSi for a great price on eBay. My wife recently gave birth, and I'm not looking to record endless (never to be watched) tapes of video footage of our son, but I do want several minute clips of him as he grows through the years. I've always been more inclined towards photography, so this camera gives me a very versatile digital SLR that I need with the wonderful capability of recording HD video that I want.

Both cameras have the same dimensions, the same viewfinder coverage (95%) and the same 9-point AF. However, the new Canon 500D/ T1i has significant improvements over Canon 450D / XSi including HD video capture, a 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor and user-friendly functions such as Auto Lighting Optimizer and Creative Auto Mode. HD and SD Video Capture

Canon T1i has three video modes: a 16:9 720p HD video capture at 30 fps, a Full HD 1080p video capture at 20 fps, and a third option to record 4:3 standard TV quality (SD) video capture at 640 x 480 pixels at 30 fps. You can adjust image sharpness, contrast, color saturation and white balance and apply these settings to video capture. Canon’s new DIGIC 4 processor

Canon’s new DIGIC 4 processor handles the larger 4,752 x 3,168 at a slightly reduced speed of 3.4 frames per second (at 1/500 second or greater — down from the XSi’s 3.5 fps), with a maximum JPEG burst of 170 frames or 9 RAW frames. Canon XSi, with the DIGIC III processor, has a shooting speed of 3.5 fps, with a max burst of 53 JPEG or 6 RAW frames. The higher burst rate is great for sports photography and wildlife photography.

Auto Lighting Optimizer

Canon’s Auto Lighting Optimizer technology helps ensure that the subject of each picture is clearly visible by analyzing image brightness and automatically adjusting dark areas in images so they appear brighter. This is ideal when shooting high-contrast situations that include harsh shadow areas, such as landscape images where the foreground is brightly lit and the background detail blanketed in dark shadow. In a scene such as this, the EOS Rebel T1i camera’s Auto Lighting Optimizer technology maintains exposure of the highlight areas while lightening shadow areas for a more enjoyable and evenly illuminated image.

The EOS Rebel T1i also supports Peripheral Illumination Correction for up to 40 Canon EF and EF-S lenses. Peripheral Illumination Correction improves image quality by maintaining evenness of illumination from corner to corner in JPEG images, even when shooting wide open with a zoom lens.

Canon’s Creative Auto Mode

Canon’s “CA” Creative Full Auto setting available on the EOS Rebel T1i, EOS 50D and EOS 5D Mark II cameras allows users to make image adjustments such as exposure compensation, aperture or shutter speed through a simple navigation screen on the camera’s LCD screen, allowing them to “blur the background” or “lighten or darken the image” with ease. These easy-to-understand image options allow learning-photographers to experiment with image options while still shooting in an automatic mode. Canon XSi and Canon 40D do not have Creative Auto Mode.

EOS Integrated Cleaning System

The Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit for the Canon EOS Rebel T1i has been upgraded with a fluorine coating on the low-pass filter for better dust resistance.

Higher Sensitivity

Canon EOS Rebel T1i provides ISO speeds from ISO 100 up to ISO 3200 in whole stop increments, along with two additional high-speed ISO settings – H1: 6400 and H2: 12800, which is much higher than the max ISO of 1600 on Canon EOS 450D / rebel XSi. The high sensitivity is very useful in low light photography such as in door or at night.

Canon EOS XSi is selling for $575 at amazon and Canon T1i will be sold for $799 body only. For $225 more you will have HD video recording, a much better LCD display, a much higher ISO and the creative auto mode. The new Canon EOS 500D or digital Rebel T1i has better value than Canon rebel XSi., in my opinion. Canon EOS Rebel T1i is a great choice to people who look for an entry level digital SLR or for people who look for a second DSLR body.

Canon EOS Rebel T1i / 500D and Canon 50D comparison

Canon EOS Rebel T1i or Canon EOS 500D was annouced on March 25 and will be available for $799 body only and $899 with kit lens Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. Canon EOS 500D or Rebel T1i has a better HD movie mode than Nikon D90, although Nikon D90 is a better camera for its superb AF and higher shooting speed. Canon EOS Rebel T1i or Canon EOS 500D is apparently a great upgrade of Canon XSi or Canon 450D

Both Canon EOS Rebel T1i or 500D and 50D have a 15.1 megapixel 22.3 x 14.9 mm CMOS sensor. The side by side comparison of the two cameras are very similar. What are the key differences of the two cameras?

First, please keep in mind that Canon Rebel T1i or 500D was designed to be an entry level consumer grade digital SLR with a lower price tag. Canon EOS 50D is a digital SLR for advanced amateur with a higher price tag and better building quality. The major differences of the two cameras are as follows:

Building quality, dimensions and price

Canon EOS Rebel T1i / 500D has a MSRP of $799 body only and Canon 50D has a MSRP of $1299. Canon EOS Rebel T1i/ 500D has a dimensions of 129 x 98 x 62 mm (5.1 x 3.9 x 2.4 in) and weighs 520g (18.3 oz) including battery, which is much smaller and lighter than Canon EOS 50D (146 x 108 x 74 mm or 5.8 x 4.3 x 2.9 in, 822 g or 29 oz including battery). Canon 50D has better building quality with weather resistant magnesium alloy body.

HD movie mode

Canon EOS Rebel T1i or 500D has a HD video capture with three video modes: a 16:9 720p HD video capture at 30 fps, a Full HD 1080p video capture at 20 fps, and a third option to record 4:3 standard TV quality (SD) video capture at 640 x 480 pixels at 30 fps. May be the most useful movie mode is 720p at 30 fps which has a limit of ca 18 min. The video mode is very useful. You can take advantage of the availability of different lenses to achieve videos with shallow depth of field or with much wider angle of views. These kind of videos could not be created with even the high end HD camcorders.

Canon 50D does not have movie mode.

Shooting speed:

Canon 50D has a higher continuous shooting speed (6.3 frames per second up to 90 JPEG or 16 raw frames) than Canon EOS Rebel T1i or 500D (3.4 frames per second up to 170 JPEG or 9 raw frames). The higher shooting speed is very useful for sports photography and wildlife photography or other action shots such as children at play. Please note: Canon EOS Rebel T1i or 500D has a larger burst buffer of JPEG: 170 frames than Canon 50D (90 frames).

Max shutter speed:

Canon 50D has a higher max shutter speed of 1/8000 than Canon EOS Rebel T1i / 500D (1/4000). The higher max shutter speed is extremely useful to freeze actions in sports photography or wildlife photography. The higher max shutter speed is also useful in bright sunlight to create bokeh (blurred background) at large aperture when taking portraits or macro shots.

Viewfinder

Canon 50D has a better viewfinder than Canon Rebel T1i or 500D. The viewfinder in Canon 50D uses a pentaprism which gives a brigher and larger image than the viewfinder in Canon Rebel T1i or 500D which uses a pentamirror. Canon 50D also has a larger view finder magnification (0.95) than Canon EOS Rebel T1i or 500D (0.87).

In addition, Canon 50D has some extra features such as avaialblity of two small RAW formats, sRAW1 and sRAW2, Kevin temperature setting in white balance, top secondary LCD screen etc.

In conclusion, Canon EOS Rebel T1i or 500D is more suitable for beginners, or as a second back up camera body or as a travel camera. Canon 50D is more suitable for advance amateur photographers who seek better camera performance rather than video capture. Especially for people who like sports photography.

Canon has brought 'Full' High Definition video and a 15.1-million-pixel imaging sensor to the EOS 500D, a new digital SLR targeting the photographic enthusiast.

The EOS 500D boasts a newly designed APS-C size CMOS imaging sensor, Live View, and an equivalent ISO of 100-3200, expandable to 12800.

The EOS 500D has been 'designed from the ground up', said Mike Owen, photo products team leader at Canon Europe's Planning Division.

Key features include the option to shoot movies at a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels and a top continuous still image burst rate of 3.4 frames per second.

Owen explained that the EOS 500D can shoot Full HD video at 20 frames per second.

The maximum file size for video recording is 4GB which allows Full HD movie clips slightly longer than 12mins, he said.

Consumers can also choose to shoot movies at 30fps using a lower 'HD' resolution of 720x1280 pixels.

Positioned above the EOS 450D - but 'not replacing' it - the EOS 500D sports a 3in LCD screen carrying a resolution of 920,000 pixels. This screen technology is borrowed from Canon's higher-end 50D and 5D Mark II models.

Also inherited from its higher-end siblings is Peripheral Illumination Correction, a type of vignetting control that allows the camera to detect the type of lens attached to the body and make adjustments accordingly. This feature can be upgraded using Canon's Digital Photo Professional raw processing software which comes bundled with the camera.

Priced £869.99 body only, and due in shops from 'early May', the EOS 500D deploys the same nine point AF (with cross type centre point) system and 35-zone TTL metering as the 450D model. It also uses the same battery and is compatible with the same optional battery grip.

In the United States the camera will carry a body only price of '$799.99', according to the US press release.

Trumpeted as 'compact and lightweight', the camera measures 128.8x97.5x61.9mm and weighs 480g.

Also on board is Canon's EOS Integrated Cleaning System and Digic 4 image processor.

The EOS 500D features a redesigned sensor but Canon Japan has so far remained tight-lipped on the technical details.

However, Amateur Photographer readers will be able to read more about this in the printed version of the magazine due out later this week.

The camera will be out in the UK body only and, initially, in two kits. One outfit includes an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens, priced £969.99; and the other kit includes an 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens, priced £1399.99.

HD and SD Video Capture
After the introduction of the EOS 5D Mark II in September 2008, the Company's first HD video DSLR, Canon has integrated this must-have feature into the new entry-level flagship EOS Rebel T1i camera. The camera features 16:9 720p HD video capture at 30 fps as well as a Full HD 1080p video capture at 20 fps, and a third option to record 4:3 standard TV quality (SD) video capture at 640 x 480 pixels and 30 fps. The video capture mode is part of the camera's Live View function, using the Picture Style that has been set for Live View still image shooting. The camera allows skilled photographers and enthusiasts to adjust image sharpness, contrast, color saturation and white balance, and have those settings apply to the movie image as well. When recording video, the camera's rear LCD screen is letter-boxed by a semi-transparent border to match the aspect ratio of the movie recording size.

Like the EOS 5D Mark II model, the Canon EOS Rebel T1i camera will record video up to 4GB per clip equaling approximately 12 minutes of Full HD video, 18 minutes of 720p HD video, or 24 minutes of SD video depending on the level of detail in the scene.i Video clips are recorded in .MOV format using an MPEG-4 video compression and sound is recorded using linear PCMii without compression. The camera features a built-in monaural microphone to record sound. To help show off those fantastic movies as well as still photos, the EOS Rebel T1i camera includes an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) output to display crisp, clear images on a High-Definition TV.

Live View Shooting
Much like the EOS 5D Mark II, the Canon EOS Rebel T1i Digital SLR Camera features Live View for both still images as well as video. The Rebel T1i features the Company's three Live View AF modes -- Quick, Live and Face Detection Live mode -- which can be used to capture still photos or video images. Quick mode automatically sets One-Shot AF using the camera's phase detection AF system. It also allows users to select the AF point, even while the Live View image is displayed. Although the camera's reflex mirror must be lowered briefly to take an AF measurement in Quick mode, it is the fastest way to set focus automatically when the Rebel T1i camera is set for Live View.

Live mode uses contrast-detection AF with the image sensor and here, as with Quick mode, users can change the location of the active AF point using the Multi-controller. Face Detection Live mode uses contrast AF to recognize human faces. When multiple faces are detected, the largest face closest to the center of the frame is targeted as the AF point. While Live View is engaged, users can still change settings including the AF mode (Quick, Live, Face Detection Live mode), drive mode, ISO speed, Picture style, White Balance and more.

Auto Lighting Optimizer
Canon's Auto Lighting Optimizer technology helps ensure that the subject of each picture is clearly visible by analyzing image brightness and automatically adjusting dark areas in images so they appear brighter. This is ideal when shooting high-contrast situations that include harsh shadow areas, such as landscape images where the foreground is brightly lit and the background detail blanketed in dark shadow. In a scene such as this, the EOS Rebel T1i camera's Auto Lighting Optimizer technology maintains exposure of the highlight areas while lightening shadow areas for a more enjoyable and evenly illuminated image. The EOS Rebel T1i also supports Peripheral Illumination Correction for up to 40 Canon EF and EF-S lenses.

With the announcement of the EOS Rebel T1i / 500D, Canon was clearly putting one camera on notice, the Nikon D90. With 15.1 megpixels, higher ISO, and the ability to shoot 1080p video, the Canon clearly looks to have the upper hand over the D90. But a closer looks at the specifications of the cameras reveal the Nikon D90 to still be a fine camera, perhaps even a camera better suited to the more discerning photographer. The Nikon D90 is faster, with better build quality, and features a top-side LCD. On paper the Canon EOS 500D might appear to have an edge in ISO, but real-life results may favor the Nikon D90. The D90’s viewfinder is bigger and brighter than the 500D, and while it may not have the ability to shoot 1080p video, the 500D technically doesn’t either due to the 20 fps (meaning most users may opt to shoot video in 720p mode).
There’s likely another factor though, that will influence most consumers, and that’s the respective pricing of the two cameras. Body only, the Canon EOS 500D is $100 cheaper, and for the same price as the body only Nikon D90, Canon offers a kit with the 18-55mm IS lens. For a camera nearly as good as the D90 and the promise of higher resolution image files, it may be to good to pass up.

Canon has always been a major player in the dSLR market, with its main competition coming from Nikon. However, the latter has been relatively quiet for the past few months, after its 720p video recording enabled D90 and the full-frame D700 were trumped by the EOS 5D Mark II. Now, it seems Canon is out to raise the bar for entry-level dSLRs as well with the introduction of the EOS 500D. The EOS 500D succeeds the EOS 450D, and it features several noteworthy upgrades. The imaging giant has swopped the CCD sensor with a CMOS type, and has enabled the shooter to record full-HD video clips. ISO sensitivity has been bumped up from ISO 1,600 on the EOS 450D to ISO 12,800 on the new camera. While it all sounds great for an entry-level dSLR, we're concerned with how Canon is going to differentiate its products lineups since there is no clear distinction between its consumer-class and professional-grade shooters.

Upside

Following in the footsteps of the EOS 5D Mark II, the EOS 500D is able to record full-HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixel)-quality video clips. This was made possible with the onboard APS-C-sized CMOS sensor which generates less heat when activated and hence is able to produce cleaner-looking videos. We gave it a quick hands-on session and found the clip recorded under fluorescent lighting to be extremely satisfactory. There is also an HDMI output port for viewing videos on a compatible HDTV. Kudos to Canon for delivering a once premium feature to an entry-level shooter.

(click for larger image)Canon has given the EOS 500D a big bump in ISO sensitivity from the EOS 450D's ISO 1,600 to ISO 12,800. While skeptics may argue that images taken at that sensitivity will be noisy, we believe it is a handy feature for shooting in low-light environments without using a flashlight. We took a sample shot at ISO 3,200 and found it to be very much usable and definitely printable up to 8R size. Although the rear LCD remains at 3 inches, the resolution has been increased from 230k (on the EOS 450D) to 920k on the EOS 500D. This is the same display we saw on the EOS 5D Mark II, and have found reviewing photographs on the display extremely easy and pleasing to the eyes. We weren't particularly excited about the resolution upgrade from 12 megapixels (on the EOS 450D) to 15.3 megapixels on the new dSLR, but it does allow printing of larger photographs. To handle the bigger image files, Canon has incorporated its new DIGIC 4 image-processing engine, which also allows the EOS 500D to rattle off at 3.4 frames per second.

The other specifications of the EOS 500D are pretty standard for a consumer-oriented dSLR--9-point autofocus, RAW image capture, Creative Auto mode and 1.6x crop factor.

Downside

We have little to nitpick on the EOS 500D, but if there is one feature we hope Canon can be improve on, it has to be the audio quality of the video recordings. Sound is captured in mono, and there is no input for attaching an external microphone to the shooter. This is one downside which may make aspiring movie-makers, who are considering shooting a short film with this dSLR think twice before buying it.

Bottomline

From the EOS 500D's literature and the brief hands-on session we had with it, we have no doubt that this camera will become a popular choice among amateur shutterbugs. While critics may question how many photographers actually make use of the video-recording function on dSLRs, we think it's a matter of time before this feature becomes a permanent fixture on such shooters. Nikon, Olympus and Sony will have a lot to do to keep up with Canon's aggressive stance to capture the entry-level dSLR market, and we expect to see these brands introducing competitive models later this year. Canon told CNET Asia that the EOS 500D will be available in Asia from early May but did not divulge its price. Although it is tempting to assume that it will retail to the EOS 450D's launch price of S$1,499 (US$1,003.15), we think the new dSLR will be slightly more expensive due to the addition of the video-recording function. That said, the company has confirmed that the EOS 500D will ship for less than S$2,000 (US$1,338.42) in stores.

Canon has introduced a new DSLR camera on Wednesday that packs in 15.1 megapixels: the Canon EOS 500D.

The new EOS 500D, which will be known as the Rebel T1i in the US, features a 15.1-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor and HD movie recording features like the company's 5D and 50D models. Lower shooting resolutions of 720p or VGA will also be available to get the most from your memory card. A built-in HDMI connection will let users playback directly on their TV.

In an attempt to offer users more for their money, the EOS 500D will use the same screen as the 5D Mark II, come with a "Live View" mode, and include contrast based and face detection AF options displayed on the LCD in real time.

The EOS 500D uses the company's DIGIC 4 processor that allows continuous shooting speeds of up to 3.4fps in bursts of up to 170 JPEGs. Using Canon’s wide area AF system - which features nine individual sensors, including a central cross type point with a high precision sensor for f/2.8 or faster lenses - makes capturing split-second action sequences possible. It features a high ISO sensitivity up to 3200, which is expandable to a whopping 12800.

The EOS 500D (body only) is available from early May 2009 priced at £869.99 in the UK, 999.99 euros in Europe and $799.99 in the US - over £300 cheaper than the UK price.

Canon 500D: Hi-Def Video for Under a Grand

Canon has just announced the 15.1 megapixel EOS 500D, known as the Rebel T1i in the US market. The new DSLR is a response to Nikon’s D90 — it’s a high-end consumer model which shoots HD video. It’s also Canon’s second DSLR to best Nikon’s HD efforts.

The EOS 500D shoots at up to full 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) but only does so at 20 frames per second. Drop to 720p (1280 x 720 pixels) and you get a better 30fps. This compares to the Nikon D90’s maximum 720p at 24fps (the same speed as film based movie cameras). The Nikon, though, records in the crappy motion JPEG format. The EOS 500D pops out .mov files in the H.264 codec. Another nice touch is the ability to use the autofocus whilst shooting, although you only get to use the slower contrast-detection system available in the live-view mode.

Yes, the EOS 500D has live-view, like almost every camera appearing these days. The stills mode (this is a DSLR, after all) also has some neat touches. The one we like most is called Creative Auto by Canon, and is essentially an easy way to tweak settings while letting the camera take care of the heavy lifting. The camera remains in auto mode, but the user can choose from English-language options, like “Darker/Brighter" or “Blur Background" to customize the image. For beginners not coming from a manual camera background, this is a great way to learn without actually messing things up.

Otherwise, there isn’t much that stands out, other than a good top “film speed". The EOS 500D goes up to ISO 3200 in regular mode with two extra emergency settings of 6400 and 12800. The rest of the specs are unsurprising but good — a 3", 920,000 pixels LCD, 95% viewfinder coverage, HDMI-out, self-cleaning sensor, face-detection. The APS-C sized sensor measures 30mm diagonally, making it smaller than a full-frame sensor but still a huge improvement over tiny pocket cameras' sensors.

The EOS 500D will cost just $800 for the body and for $900 in a kit with the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. That, in case you were wondering, is quite the bargain. Available May.

Canon has unveiled the EOS 500D (Digital Rebel T1i), the latest addition to its compact DSLR series. The upper-entry-level camera features a 15.1 MP APS-C CMOS sensor with 1080p HD video recording at 20fps. It also offers a 3.0 inch LCD with 920,000 dot resolution and an ISO sensitivity range expandable up to 12800 equivalent. It includes a faster Digic 4 processor offering better noise reduction at higher ISO's and continuous shooting speeds of up to 3.4 fps delivering 170 large JPEG images in a single burst.

Amstelveen, The Netherlands, 25 March 2009: Canon announces the new 15.1MP EOS 500D which offers photographers an outstanding combination of features. Following the launch of the first Canon EOS camera to shoot movies – the EOS 5D Mark II in September 2008 – Canon now brings Full High Definition (HD) video capability to consumers in a compact and lightweight DSLR.

The new EOS 500D features a 15.1 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor – ideal for large detailed prints or enormous cropping possibilities. For shooting in near-dark conditions, the EOS 500D offers a high ISO sensitivity up to 3200 which is expandable to 12800, giving photographers the power to shoot in the dimmest light conditions. Outstanding noise reduction is made possible by Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor.

The EOS 500D heralds a new way for photography enthusiasts to capture their world. It pairs outstanding still image capture with Full HD 1080P video recording. For longer video shoots, users can also choose lower shooting resolutions of 720P or VGA.*

Every detail revealed
Exacting image preview and review is provided by a 3.0” Clear View LCD screen.The same screen as used on the acclaimed 5D Mark II, it features a 920,000 dot count – for ultra-detailed image review, accurate focus checks, and clear access to the EOS menu system. As well as aiding shooting from awkward angles, Live View mode includes contrast based and Face Detection AF options. Ideal for newcomers to digital SLR photography, these allow compact-camera style auto focus, with a real-time image displayed on the LCD.

Fast processing, fast focusing
Canon’s DIGIC 4 processor drives continuous shooting speeds of up to 3.4 fps in bursts of up to 170 JPEGs**. Using Canon’s wide area AF system – which features 9 individual sensors, including a central cross type point with a high precision sensor for f/2.8 or faster lenses– makes capturing split-second action sequences possible.

DIGIC 4 works in conjunction with the CMOS sensor to deliver exceptional noise reduction and 14-bit image processing for smooth gradation of tones and natural-looking colours. In addition, DIGIC 4 enables the ultra-fast start-up times and near-instant image review after shooting that photographers demand.

Distinctive EOS quality
Despite its compact, lightweight body, the EOS 500D includes all the hallmarks of the EOS system. Every detail of the EOS 500D – from the large, bright viewfinder to the famously intuitive EOS menu system – is designed to provide users with a world-class shooting experience.

Image quality is protected by the EOS Integrated Cleaning System, which reduces, repels and removes unwanted dust from the sensor. Stubborn particles can be easily removed in post-production by using Dust Delete Data – which can be added to the image in-camera – and Canon’s included Digital Photo Professional software.

Digital Photo Professional software offers a comprehensive RAW editing package, with functions such as a quick check tool, a cropping tool, and a stamp tool – plus the ability to change brightness, White Balance and Picture Styles in RAW images. Technologies Explained:

CMOS
Canon’s CMOS technology is one of the company’s key competitive advantages, with noise reduction circuitry at each pixel site delivering virtually noise-free images. In comparison with CCD technology, the lower power consumption characteristics of Canon’s CMOS sensors also contribute to longer battery life.

Signal conversion in Canon’s CMOS sensors is handled by individual amplifiers at each pixel site. Unnecessary charge transfer operations are avoided, vastly speeding up the process of getting signal to the image processor. Noise generation is reduced, power consumption is limited and faster frame rate potential is increased.

DIGIC
Image data captured by the CMOS sensor is processed by Canon’s purpose-built DIGIC image processors before being written to the camera's memory card. DIGIC technology uses advanced image processing algorithms to ensure precise, natural colours, accurate white balance, and advanced noise reduction. Ultra-fast processing speeds result in highly responsive camera operation and near-instant start-up times.

DIGIC chips work with a high speed image buffer – reading, processing, compressing and writing image data fast enough to keep the buffer clear during long continuous shooting bursts. And because DIGIC integrates all key processing functions, power consumption is kept to a minimum.

EOS Integrated Cleaning System
The EOS Integrated Cleaning System combats sensor dust in three important ways: Reduce, Repel and Remove.

Reduce - Internal camera mechanisms are designed to minimise dust generation. The redesigned body cap prevents dust generation through wear on the cap itself.
Repel - Anti-static technologies, including a special fluorine coating, are applied to the low-pass filter covering the front of the sensor so as not to attract dust.
Remove - A Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit uses hi-frequency vibrations to shake dust from the infrared filter for a period of approximately one second after each start up. For instant shooting after power up, this feature is disabled immediately the shutter release is depressed.

Canon has also developed an internal Dust Delete Data system, which can map the position of visible dust on the sensor. This can then be deleted automatically after the shoot with the latest Digital Photo Professional software.

Clear View LCD
Canon’s Clear View LCD screens are 3.0” in diameter and feature a VGA (640x480) pixel resolution with 920,000 dots. This allows high-quality viewing of images and ultra-accurate focus checks in playback. Thanks to a wide 170º angle-of-view, a Clear View LCD can be viewed in a wide range of environments with ghosting and reflections being eliminated thanks to Canon’s unique dual layer anti reflective coating. This combination of features enables photographers to enjoy shooting from awkward angles.

Full HD
Thanks to the combination of a Canon CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4 processing, Canon is able to offer Full HD resolution movie recording in a digital SLR camera. An HDMI connection provides the ability to play back movies directly on any HDTV in high quality HD resolution. Canon’s Full HD products feature the same maximum resolution available for HDTV’s (1920x1080 pixels), ensuring outstanding clarity. Full HD exceeds the quality found in HD ready (720) resolution devices.

Picture Style
Picture Style pre-sets simplify in-camera control over image qualities. Picture Style pre-sets can be likened to different film types – each one offering a different colour response. Within each selectable pre-set, photographers have control over sharpness, contrast, colour tone and saturation. The camera’s factory default configuration is set to deliver immediately-usable JPEG images without need for additional menu settings. Picture Style presets applied to a RAW image can be revised with Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software.

The six pre-sets are:

Standard – for crisp, vivid images that don’t require post-processing
Portrait – optimises colour tone and saturation and weakens sharpening to achieve attractive skin tones
Landscape – for punchier greens and blues with stronger sharpening to give a crisp edge to mountain, tree and building outlines
Neutral – ideal for post-processing
Faithful – adjusts colour to match the subject colour when shot under a colour temperature of 5200K
Monochrome – for black and white shooting with a range of filter effects (yellow, orange, red and green) and toning effects (sepia, blue, purple and green).

Software

Digital Photo Professional Software
Digital Photo Professional software provides high speed, high quality processing of lossless RAW images. Processing with Digital Photo Professional allows real-time display and immediate application of image adjustments, giving control over RAW image variables such as white balance, dynamic range, exposure compensation, noise reduction and colour tone – plus the ability to view Auto Focus points on an image.

Recently added functions to Digital Photo Professional include a Peripheral Illumination Correction tool, which reduces the darkening that can occur in the corners of images shot with certain lenses. The Lens Aberration correction tool allows precise correction of different types of distortion caused by certain cameras. Users can also control the highlights and shadows within an image, reducing the problem of ‘clipped’ areas where detail is lost.

Digital Photo Professional supports sRGB, Adobe RGB, ColorMatch RGB, Apple RGB and Wide Gamut RGB colour spaces. ICC (International Colour Consortium) profiles can be attached to TIFF or JPEG images when converted from RAW. This allows faithful reproduction of colours in software applications that support ICC profiles, such as Adobe Photoshop. For improved efficiency, a set of image adjustments can be saved as a recipe and applied.

EOS Utility
The latest version of EOS Utility provides essential support for Live View remote shooting, camera configuration and image transfers. Tightly integrated with Digital Photo Professional, EOS Utility can be configured to monitor ‘hot’ folders, automatically renaming and moving incoming images to a structured file system. Users can also tag their images with EXIF data, including copyright information.

Picture Style Editor
Picture Style Editor allows users to create individual Picture Styles that fit with their personal requirements. Each Picture Style contains detailed information on how specific colours should be represented within an image. Once new Picture Styles have been created, they can be uploaded directly into the camera and applied to JPEG or RAW images. When working with RAW files in DPP, both personal Picture Styles and the 6 predetermined Picture Styles can all be adjusted.

ZoomBrowser/ImageBrowser
For extra-easy review, editing and management of JPEG files, two pieces of software are included: ZoomBrowser for PC, and ImageBrowser for Mac.

Both programs feature a MovieEdit function plug-in, which supports the .MOV clips recorded by the EOS 500D and EOS 5D Mark II. Users can use this to perform basic editing tasks, including creating and exporting clips which combine movie files and JPEGs.
