Hope you all had (or are having) a wonderful Halloween!

It was a treat to spend this Halloween with my 8 month old daughter Daphne, dressed as a bumble bee:

Unfortunately, she was more a fan of her costume than of other people's costumes - there were a lot of bumble bee tears. Needless to say, we were able to find a baby goat to play with and end the evening on a good note. Glinda made an encore performance this evening, will be sad to retire that red wig:

Follow The Yellow Brick Road

Last night in Charleston I took a trip to Oz for the annual Red Party hosted by The College of the Building Arts. Never one to shy away from a costume party, I went with the Oz theme (instead of just red) and dressed as Glinda the good witch, with a vintage, 1950's gown and a homemade crown. Here are a few snaps of my costume and of the magical evening:

A few months ago I was contacted about my daughter Daphne's nursery being featured in Rhubie and Rhett, a new magazine for modern parents that launched today. I love the idea of a hip parenting magazine - one that takes fresh approach to life with children, with a bent towards design, style and of course fun! The talented Paige Winn came to our home in Charleston to take pictures of me and my family as well as my home Candy Shop Vintage jewelry studio. I recently read an article on British artist James Mylne who creates hyper-realistic drawings of photographs. I was particularly struck by his latest group, all fashion-related photographic drawings referencing fashion icons from the 40's - 60's, and including recreating some of my favorite vintage portraits, like this Man Ray Photo of Coco Chanel:

Off of one costume party and on to the next... Save the date for the annual Red Party in Charleston on Thursday, October 25:

The Red Party is hosted in the Old City Jail by the College of Building Arts and this year's theme is The Wizard of Oz, how cool is that? And the Old City jail is the absolute perfect venue for that... We are donating this Vintage Barrera for Avon necklace and earring set to their auction:

Best Emmy Outfits: Your Red Carpet Fashion Recap

Red Carpet fashion... so much fun! Did you watch the Emmy's? Here are some of our favorite looks...monochromatic dresses seemed to dominate the Emmy's this year... Christina Hendricks's form-fitting strapless dress was a beautiful nude tone that brought out her firey read hair - and I loved the deco-style clutch and elegant diamond bangles:

The other two leading ladies of MAD MEN, January Jones in a sculptural black gown and Jessica Pare went for black and white respectively. I thought that Jessica's white, one shouldered dress and feathered headpiece was a great Grecian goddess-meets-the-1920's look, and her emerald ring gave it just the right pop of color (If you need an emerald cocktail ring, we have a great vintage one available on Etsy):

Citrus was seen in several dresses, in this totally gorge gown worn by Julianne Moore with a stunning, thick diamond cuff:

And Judd Aptow's wife, Leslie Mann, wore some lovely turquoise baubles that had a vintage look with her yellow-skirted elegant seed-pearl dress (pockets in dresses are the best!):

Claire Danes covered up her baby bump nicely with an also Grecian-looking strapless gown:

And Girl's actress Allison Williams rocked this jewel-toned frock and long gold earrings perfectly:

Zooey Deschanel was cute as always in this powder blue tulle princess dress with a very feminine cut:

And on the male fashion front, Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul proved he could clean up from math cooking well and showed up to win his well-deserved Emmy in a tux - best we've ever seen Jesse look!

The Gatsby Gala and Wilmington

Well, I just returned from the wonderful Gatsby Gala hosted by Jess James and Wilmington North Carolina's historic City Club, a beautiful downtown mansion and it was magical! It actually fell on my birthday this year - is there anything better than dressing as a flapper on your birthday? Here are a few photos of the evening:

Jess is an expert at navigating Wilmington's off-the-beaten path shopping scene and took me to some of her favorite vintage haunts like The Wonder Shop where I got this great vintage Candy Land lunchbox:

And AMuse, which has a mouth-watering selection of vintage jewelry, accessories as well has hats and headpieces made by the talented milliner and shop owner Jan Wutkowski:

We had a great final evening enjoying Wilmington's waterfront in a local French bistro:

I even picked up an outfit for next year's Gatsby Gala at A Second Time Around in downtown Wilmington and this great book of vintage 1920's Ad illustrations at an Estate Sale on our way out of town:

Flapper Girl Accessories

I am headed to The Great Gatsby Gala next week and I'd say the challenge was not what accessories to wear, but which ones to eliminate... I am trying to capture just the right amount of that flapper magic without going overboard..

So, I've settled on a black-and-white theme for my costume, with of course all vintage jewelry, an flapper style headpiece from Etsy seller BaroqueandRoll, a beaded, vintage Missoni purse and a pair of Mary Norton pony hair pumps:

Looking forward to the Gala (which also happens to fall on my birthday) - will post plenty of photos! Also, some of you may be wondering what is up with the Candy Shop Vintage Website. I've got some great new things in the works and will be relaunching my website later this fall. Please check back in for updates! Treasure Hunting

When I do trunk shows and events, people often ask me where I find my jewelry... I tell them it comes from a combination of Estate Sales, flea markets and antiques shows all over the East Coast. My motto is "I do the digging so you don't have to!" Some people don't like the hunt and just want a beautiful, hand-picked piece of jewelry delivered to them in a nice pretty box (which is where I come in!). However, I still like to get my hands dirty! Here are some photos of my latest buying trip:

It's always fun trying on vintage accessories along the way - loved the shape of these glasses! (By the way, my awesome tie-dye scarf is not vintage but from Proud Mary. I've been wearing it all summer and I am in love with it):

Off The Grid

I am off the grid, or at least the Southern grid for a bit, traveling through New England with my family in tow. I've spend the week meeting with the manufacturers and other people involved in producing my very first line of vintage-inspired jewelry...more details on that soon! It has been wonderful to breathe some crisp, late summer Northeast air, seek out some great local spots for eating and drinking (sea food shacks, especially!) and get inspired as a designer. Here are some snaps from our trip this week, enjoy!

Flapper Fabulous and The Great Gatsby Gala

Is there anything more ethereal and wonderful than the flapper era? The 1920's were a decade of liberation and excess and stories like The Great Gatsby, later immortalized in film, brought the flapper girl to life through Mia Farrow's wispy elegant portrayal of Daisy Buchanan, soon to be revived in the remake due out this Christmas with Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan:

Are you excited for that? I am! Getting in the spirit, I am heading up to one of my favorite little Southern cities, Wilmington, NC (also known as the town where Dawson's Creek was filmed for my generation : ), next month to attend The Gatsby Gala, thrown at their famed City Club, a beautiful historic downtown mansion. The second annual Gala is hosted and organized by Style Girl Jess James, and includes giveaways, shopping and even a burlesque show.

Are You An Emerging Designer?

I rarely promote other brands and businesses on my blog as this is primarily a place dedicated to my vintage jewelry collection and style tips. However, of the vintage inspired brands out there, Shabby Apple is one of my favs. Their clothes are affordable, cut well and often based on chic, feminine vintage silhouettes, like peplems and pencil skirts. They recently sent me this beautiful black crepe de chine silk dress created by one of their emerging designers to check out:

I fell in love with it because 1) the cut is very flattering... I recently had a baby and am still not quite back to "fighting form" and the length, combined with the waist tie creates an elegant silhouette, even if it's a bit illusory : ) 2) the cap sleeves are a great touch which give it a more modern look and 3) Pockets - I love pockets in dress! If it weren't a sweltering Charleston summer I would prefer that the dress be lined - it is made of very lightweight fabric - but the weight is actually perfect for the weather right now. I also think the simple lines look great with the more ornate vintage jewelry I've paired it with.

Now... if you think you could to better, or at least as well, they are offering a program where if you become one of the select designers they choose to work with. You can design, manufacture and sell all under their guidance, much like this Forbidden City Dress. Having a middle man to help with marketing, production and shipping is a huge incentive if you just want to design - trust me!

So check out all the details on their website... It's better than fashion school - you actually stand to make some money!

Antiques Show Finds... The Funny & The Fabulous

I just got back from an Antiques show in NC where I picked up some new treasures and gleaned some inspiration for a vintage inspired line of jewelry I am working on. Just wanted to share a few Instagram snaps of my trip (you can follow me there @deirdrezahl). It's always exciting to see what old styles of jewelry I stumble across that are suddenly relevant again today. Like this sleek, V-shaped collar necklace from the 70's i found, that is already on it's way to a new home:

And these beaded collar necklaces that have just the right amount of bohemian appeal:

It's hard not to pick up other treasures while hunting for jewelry... I am always drawn to anything animal themed, horses in particular:

After a full day sorting through bins, trays and cases of jewels, I came away with some great pieces.

And even a lucite magazine rack for my office!

Charleston truly is one of the best places in the country to live. And I'm not just saying that, Condé Nast thinks so too! We have some of the best shopping, food and beaches anywhere.
