Participating in cancer walks can be a great way to fight cancer and support those who are dealing with the challenges of cancer. Cancer affects all of us, either directly or indirectly.

If you don’t believe cancer affects you, consider these statistics. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1.4 million new cases of diagnosed cancer will occur this year alone. In 2004, there were approximately 10.8 million people who had a history of cancer. Last year the cost of cancer was estimated to be over $200 Billion dollars! Cancer does affect all of us.

Cancer walks don’t only raise funds for worthy charities that battle cancer every day. They also help create an awareness and can even be used to recruit volunteers and advocates for the cause.

The purpose of each cancer walk is different. The money raised may go to a nonprofit organization that deals with many forms of cancer or one specific form. Decide where your passion is and get involved in a cancer walk that aligns with your passion.

Relay for Life (American Cancer Society)
Breast Cancer 3-Day (Susan G. Komen for the Cure)
Avon Walk for Breast Cancer (Avon Foundation)
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (American Cancer Society)
Lung Cancer Walk (LUNGevity Foundation)

Search out a cancer walk in your area and get involved. You can play a part in wiping out the disease and supporting those who deal with cancer until it is only a memory.

The Avon Walk Around the World for Breast Cancer began in 2005 bringing grassroots activism to a global scale. This worldwide series of events began mobilizing hundreds of thousands of people across the globe raising money and breaking down barriers to awareness and access to care while working to eradicate the disease. Walk Around the World events are linked by the Global Connection Ribbon, which is the symbolic emotional component that connects breast cancer survivors and participants across the world. The ribbon is a powerful symbol of the connection to each other and shared determination to turn every diagnosis into a story of survival. Each Walk Around the World event includes the Global Connection Ribbon ceremony, where this special ribbon is passed from one breast cancer survivor to another uniting all survivors and this global community.

JDC and Komen Race For The Cure in Sarajevo, 2008

In 2008, the First Annual JDC and Susan G. Komen for the Cure Race for the Cure® was held in Sarajevo, bringing together more than 2,500 Bosnians – Muslims, Serbs, Croats and Jews – to walk and show their support for the fight against a common enemy: breast cancer.

Breast cancer survivors, high school students, government officials, and guest celebrities were among the participants from 18 different cities who attended the event and, for the first time, gave a public face to a disease that is still remarkably taboo in this European nation. Proceeds from last years event provided more than 600 free mammogram checkups for women without health insurance.

Women’s Health Empowerment Program
The Womens Health Empowerment Program (WHEP) is an innovative public education movement that conducts public education programs to encourage the early detection of breast cancer, as well as projects that create new psychosocial support services by and for women with breast cancer and their families. Working with local Non-Governmental Organizations and Government partners, these projects build leadership among women affected by breast cancer. They also focus on strengthening doctor-patient communication, and creating partnerships between and among patients and the medical and health communities.
