Think about what your life will be like 6 months from now if you lived without goals other than to get drunk at the weekend?

Would you be happy? A majority of people complain everyday in regards to something in their life they have the power to change.

What could you start doing today to make moves towards even a moderately happier life?

If I met you in 6 months and spent a day with you, what would be different about your life from today? would you be any closer to your goals, would you have dropped a bad money habit, would you have sorted your cv?

A lot of people including myself are clear as hell on their vision for the future, but shouldn't we spend more time making clear the goals we need to reach to make that vision a reality rather than a fantasy.

I am personally teaching myself to code websites so I can offer a new service in the new year. Last week I finished a book on html that was aimed at children of around 10yrs old. Its was a little frustrating to read but I knew I needed to get the foundations of this skill down asap, I needed it explained quick and easy and now I can create basic static pages. I'm now on to CSS and then advanced CSS /HTML - java etc. More for the resume.

What moves are you making to improve your life?

Calvin_T

The Whiney Dog

Here's a real quick one;

A quiet afternoon an elderly man was sitting outside his house with his trusty hound rocking back and forth on his chair. He was just dozing but his dog would whine every now and again and stop him from catching some Z's.

Another dog, a happy dog, walks past the house and as they do (in dog talk) asks the whiney dog "Hey buddy, what you bitching about, why are you making up noise?"

#Whiney dog replies "I'm laying on a nail"

#Happy dog says "well, why don't you move?'

#Whiney dog says "Because it doesn't hurt enough"

You'll have to tap into your imagination a bit when it comes to talking dogs but how often are you in the whiney dog's position and how often are you in the happy dog position?

The whiney dog is in a state of discomfort, enough so for him to bitch about constantly, but he had no motivation to move and take action to remedy the situation.

What things in your life do you bitch about on a daily basis but contribute minimal effort towards to better these annoyances?

If everyday you took one step forwards in an attempt to change the things in your life that annoy you, surely you would be better off?

Saving an extra £5 a week towards the new laptop you think you'll never afford? Working on your graphic design portfolio for that job that keeps turning you down? Placing a few ads and networking to gain more clients for your freelance career.

From today plan what steps you are going to take to make these annoying situtations in your life vanish and focus on being happy.

Leave a comment on what you bitch about and what you're going to do about it, if you have the passion to make it happen.

Do it
Calvin_T x

Marketing yourself.

Thought while I'm sitting around in starbucks in the morning I might as well blog it up.

I'm going to start leaving little things for you to think about during the day. Hopefully these little thoughts will spark ideas off within yourself.

So todays "bit" is going to be about how you market yourself. Step back and look at your peers or co-creatives. what are they good at? What can you do better than them? What makes you stand out? Do you have a unique selling point "a USP"? What do you enjoy doing that you know you are good at?

Basically. Ignore what you know you can't do for the time being and focus on what you know you can do. Does your profile "online AND offline" project these skills?

Focus on letting people know what you are good at. Improve on your strengths and make them unique to you.

Get on with it.
Calvin_T x

Diamonds R Us wallpaper.

Here is a wallpaper for you guys to download if you so wish.
This one helps to keep me focused on the riches and the wealth that can be attained through good old hard work. While you can most likely handle multiple menial tasks, anything that requires you to concentrate, reason, or decide deserves full focus.

2 Exercise your brain, not just your body.
A lot of us leave learning behind when we leave school, college or university. Keep the brain fit by learning something new, whether it be a language, a new skill or musical instrument.

3 The world is a mystery.
Use your brain to constantly ask questions and explore your surroundings. Continually exercise your brain by not accepting everything you see and hear: question it and free your sense of curiosity.

4 Use both hemispheres
Use the left hemisphere of your brain to practice logical, mathematical problems in your life. Use the right hemisphere to unleash your creativity. You will know what side is dominant so make it a point to practice using your non dominant hemisphere.

5 Get to know your sleeping pattern.
Your brain needs sleep as much as your body but everybody is different. I function on 5-6 hours you might work best on 8-9 hours.

6 Feed your brain decent information.
Your brain is learning throughout the night, so give it something worthwhile to feed it. Our brain is not restoring energy whilst we are sleeping it is cutting out the noise and going over the days events and processing it; give it some great material to process.

7 If you want to learn more whilst studying, start pacing.
If you are reading a book, start pacing. Movement gets the blood flowing and this helps oxygenate your brain. I walked my way through university and have taught my sons study walking to help them memorize information.

8 You've heard it before.
Exercise is probably the number 1 way to increase the brains capabilities in every way possible, from memory to creativity. Dopamine aids in learning and memory.

12 Learn a song.
Learn the lyrics of some of your favorite songs to keep your listening skills and memory skills alive.

13 Watch brain stimulating movies.
Movies that make you think (such as mysteries) help keep your brain and mind active.

14 Play video games
This has been shown to increase cognitive abilities and can help fight Alzheimer's.

15 Practice doing things with your non-dominant hand.
This stimulates the brain in many areas and also can be quite fun.

16 Use meditation as a way to alleviate your stress.
There are thousands of studies about the beneficial effects of mediation and keeping your stress levels down is good for you. You lose brain cells the more stressed you feel, so controlling stress levels is important.

17 Laugh as often as possible.
Laughing out loud boosts the immune system and releases endorphins, the bodies feel good chemicals.

18 Think positive.
Thinking positively is a great way to keep your brain alive. Constant negative thinking depresses the mind and goes on to literally depress the immune system. Thinking more positive thoughts is a good way to keep stress down and spur you to take action for a better life.

19 Practice gratitude.
Practicing gratitude can increase your happiness level significantly which helps to alleviate stress which helps your whole brain and body.

20 Sex
Sex is another great way to keep your cardiovascular system healthy which means more oxygen to your brain which keeps the brain healthy.

21 Read a great book.
No matter what type of books you read, they are all beneficial in keeping your brain healthy and active and ward off the aging process.

22 Drink less alcohol.
Alcohol in moderation can actually be good for the brain, however too much alcohol can kill brain cells and your ability to be able to think and reason effectively.

23 Working.
A lot of people look forward to giving up work as we get older, however, working even in a part time job can keep the mind active. If you are retired you can do volunteer work to keep you active.

24 Keep up to date with current events and news.
Keeping your brain fit is about feeding your mind with new information. Deep down I was half hoping I could start a chain reaction and get people a little less scared of the dreaded R word. I mean after all are we still technically in the recession?

Your point being?
The reason I even brought this up was that I know many freelancers have been having some serious down time lately due to client and prospects tightening their belts and making huge cut backs. It would seem the ones that are willing to spend, do so lavishly in an attempt to boost their sales, whereas the ones that are a little less ambitious have literally stopped spending all together.

Marketing Yo'self
So if certain businesses are still spending then how do you get to them and how do you get a piece of that pie? Marketing right? As i and most are aware there are those 3 main marketing techniques.
Cold calling, Direct mailers and Word of mouth. And as it would seem, word of mouth seems to be the most effective at bringing in the clientele. Cold calling seems to be runner up as a pot luck kind of money producer and direct mailers might as well just say "pretty junk mail" as far as people take notice of them.

So?
Other than word of mouth, what other techniques have people tried to market themselves. I'm not just asking designers either, I am directing this to all freelancers as i feel we can learn from each other. Some people attend a lot of networking events and others use twitter to their advantage.

What do you do?
leave a comment to share some of your experiences.

Thanks
Calvin_T

New tees in store, Free shipping.

New tees now available, have a look.
Email me through the contact page to chat about different colour tees.
More on the way

Peace

Calvin_T

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 257px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_He_kuSNjxQs/SqDm0ExO_RI/AAAAAAAAARQ/vlxqOOFIvRw/s320/Calvin_T_new+tees.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5377551737388203282" />

The Nothing Collective/1st meeting/Success

The initial meeting for the collective went very well indeed. Unfortunately there were some floating members who failed to show. On a lighter note the people that did make it down proved to be inspirational, motivated and enthusiastic.

From beginning right through to the very end of our journey that day, there were a ton of ideas flying around all of which have been taken into account and will be calculated into a full scale creative outburst at specified times.

It's refreshing to be surrounded by like minded individuals who can visualize the big picture and who are willing to make it happen.

Thank you very much guys and girls for your passionate entrance into the collective. The deadline has been set for the first publication so watch this space.

Will be meeting up for drinky poos this wednesday, so other potential members who failed to make last Sunday, get in touch and find out where to meet.

Peace the EF out.
Calvin

Collective start up story, the potential of what i am trying to achieve.

This article is one that inspired me to start start the Nothing Collective. Hopefully it will inspire some of the people who are a little flakey about the idea too. The following text is courtesy of Computer Arts magazine.

Leader of the Xynthetic collective Gavin Strange explains why forming a collective can turn individual designers into a team of art superheroes

Strength in numbers. Power to the people. You’ve heard the phrases all before, but that’s because they’re true. Surround yourself with like-minded people and you’ll feel empowered, not just because of the stirrings of inspiration they bring, but that fighting spirit too – a yearning to better yourself and impress your peers.

Being part of a collective brings many benefits: exciting and challenging projects, different heads to bounce ideas off, a shared vision of a creative future, and lets not forget that age-old adage: ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know’.

I started Xynthetic back in 2002, and it has gone from being a one man band to an 18-strong family of creative types. ‘Xynthetic’ was originally the name I went under to create hand-painted skateboard decks – I was determined to have my own skateboard company, and would create skateboard decks using hand-cut stencils and spray paint in my friend’s garage in Leicester. There were four skateboarders who ‘rode’ for us, although in reality we were just four close friends skating together using the Xynthetic name. This didn’t deter us: we used low-tech video cameras to film a skate video, and then our Apple Macs to capture, edit and output a DVD of our antics. The 12-minute film epic served as our first real collaborative effort, joining myself and good friend Makinov – a film maker – on editing duties for the first time.

This marked the beginning of a new era for the Xyn. Having started as a solo ‘brand’, I now felt that working with other people as a collective could become something very exciting.

The family consists of designers, artists, photographers, filmmakers, skaters and riders, so there’s no shortage of projects to collaborate on. Most frequently we work together for art shows and exhibitions, producing work with a common theme and combining art, design, film and photography to showcase a broad range of mediums. Armed with a wealth of video and stills cameras, we capture all the stages of a project, from start to finish, with the end goal of producing mini-films for each event.

Using these diverse skills has given us strength to explore new areas, such as producing our own screen prints or producing video podcasts. Through exploring different techniques and combining them, we all learn as individuals, and this helps us push the Xynthetic collective further.

“If anything, the art of self-promotion is just as important as the artwork itself,” says James Klinge – aka Klingatron – one of Xynthetic’s members. “Making a career out of being creative starts with taking care of yourself. You need dedication, and a focused attitude towards your creations and getting your work out there to be seen by as many people, in as many different ways, as you can. A little success can feel like a big achievement when you make things happen yourself, and that only comes with self-promotion.”

Using the internet has been key to getting people involved and interested in what we’re doing, both as a collective and individually. The Xynthetic website is updated regularly with pictures, quotes and videos of members’ latest work and activities. We’ve been offered live drawing events, exhibitions around Europe, and commercial work just because our endeavours are online for all to see.

Alex Fowkes, alias Pone, explains. “In Xyn’s case, we get to travel to new places, exhibiting our work, showing people what we are about and hopefully inspiring them. Doing things together as a collective is really exciting too; you never quite know what everyone is going to come up with next. The Xyn is forever growing as well, which means more work, more friends, more fun!”

In 2008 we put together a ‘mini arts tour’ where we produced a exhibition that visited three galleries in Middlesbrough, Nottingham and Bristol. The work we produced consisted of screen prints, painted skateboards, hundreds of lomo photographs, and even a handmade film. To let people take away a little piece of the tour, we made up 90 ‘goodie bags’, which contained stickers, postcards, badges and posters that we gave away at the opening of each show. These little touches are a way of saying ‘thank you’ to the people who take the time to embrace what you’re doing, and in turn will help them remember you and your work.

Jonny Clooney, who works as Makinov, agrees. “Collaborating on joint projects provides a great environment in which to push and develop each others’ talents. The encouragement that comes with this is an amazing boost to your own state of mind and work.” For Clooney, the main benefit of his involvement in Xynthetic is the range of work we cover together. “We all influence each other in some way, and with so many of us throwing ideas into the pot, it ensures what we create will remain fresh and exciting.”

In the future we hope to push our collective work more and experiment with different mediums further. We would like to approach exhibitions with more of a ‘concept’ in mind, such as an entire show using ultraviolet light, or an animated film featuring character design from all the family members. We’re constantly learning in our own fields, so you never know what opportunities will present themselves in the future.

As with any artist, designer or creative, inspiration comes in many different forms – and there’s nothing more inspiring than seeing what can be made possible by others with a DIY ethic. And that’s where Doomtree come into the story.

Doomtree are a hip-hop collective from Minneapolis, USA, who believe strongly in the relationship between music and design. They have been putting out their own records combined with high-energy live shows for many years, and continue to go from strength to strength. Their tiresome work ethic and consistent level of production ensures their reputation grows with everything they produce.

They’re a huge inspiration for Xynthetic, and I often refer to wanting us to be “the Doomtree of design”. Paper Tiger is producer and beat-maker for the crew, and working as a collective is something he feels strongly about. “I know I’d never have reached the level that I have without everyone in the crew. I have learned and gained so much from everyone. We are constantly inspiring each other, and that is a major part of it.”

With music being increasingly downloaded via the internet, the days of album artwork are beginning to look numbered. But Doomtree still feel the discipline has a lot of life left in it. “I truly believe that we have a good couple more years of making actual, physical albums. The market is not built for it anymore, and it has become more and more clear that a digital format will eventually completely take over,” Tiger explains. “So as far as I am concerned, this is sort of the last gasp to try and make some really cool looking products, and use them as a vehicle to push the brand.”

It isn’t just album and EP artwork that requires attention to detail; everything from music videos to the stage design of their yearly blowouts is scrutinised and perfected. “Everything demands creative direction. It is very important to keep up brand recognition and, very simply, quality control. Anything that has your name on it gives an impression to someone, and often it’s the first impression. You have to take every opportunity to deliver something memorable.”

The internet is now regarded as key for instant self-promotion, using tools like Facebook, Flickr and Twitter. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a graphic designer or an MC, reaching people is a lot easier online. As Tiger reveals, “It boils down to a very simple solution – be where your audience is. We are becoming more aware of the age and lifestyle of our fans, which is very important. This is where people spend their day. I can guarantee you will never see a Doomtree commercial on TV, because it does not have our intended market in mind. However we have been making web videos for years. Being a DIY organisation, the internet plays a huge role in our marketing. When we started, we had nothing more than a few dollars in each of our pockets. The internet provides a platform for us to show exactly who we are to our fans.”

Paper Tiger’s advice on starting a collective of your own is to start simply. “Do whatever you can to communicate with others who are like-minded and involved in the same type of creativity. You can learn so much just by seeing what others have done. Then take all that knowledge and figure out a way to explain to your intended audience why you are who you are, and what makes you different.”

I agree; nothing will get you further in this creative life than honest hard work and a passion for what you do. It really is as simple as that. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals will only make the experience more fun and more rewarding.

With the internet making the world a smaller place, you’ll find yourself making friends in no time. Getting involved online is absolutely essential. Comment on beautiful photographs on Flickr; reply to an interesting tweet on Twitter. There’s an endless supply of amazing and inspiring work out there in all different forms – go and find it, leave your thoughts, and pretty soon you’ll find yourself immersed in a constant flurry of inspiration.

It will all come back around, too; the recipients of your kind words will start reciprocating your feedback, checking our your work, and initiating the cycle of appreciation. To sum up: create with your heart, give it your all, surround yourself with like-minded individuals, and you won’t go far wrong.

Contact Me

The New Foldout CV

Unfortunately the latest exhibition I am taking part in falls on the same week as my trip to Spain.
