If you live in the United States, and you make a lot of long distance calls to India, you might want to take a look at India LD’s $29.95 Unlimited India Calling Plan. The plan lets you call India, through their California access number, an unlimited amount of time, from 2 US phone numbers. This includes calls to cell phones in India, as well as landlines, and you also get unlimited SMS text messaging to Indian cell phones. Best of all, this is PIN-less dialing, and the system recognizes your phone numbers, so you don’t have to enter a PIN number to make a call.

If you don’t need unlimited long distance calls to India, but you do call India a lot, try out one of their 500, 1000, 1500 or 2000 minute plans. Prices are $4.45, $7.95, $13.95 and $19.95 respectively. These plans are billed monthly for a penny per minute, or less, and can be canceled at any time, since there isn’t a contract.

All plans come provided with calling to these listed countries for the same low rate, countries with a plus sign next to them include calls to cell phones:

Some of the people who have U-Verse unlimited local and long distance phone service from AT&T think that this includes unlimited long distance calling anywhere in the world, and that’s just not so. While U-Verse does come with unlimited local phone service and unlimited long distance calling within the United States and Canada, it doesn’t include free calling to other countries. For a list of international long distance rates, visit http://www.att.com/u-verse/explore/international-rates.jsp.

If you have one of AT&T’s regular landline calling plans, there is a list of prices for local, long distance and international calling listed at https://swot.sbc.com/swot/ldCatalog.do. while AT&T offers great phone service, if you’re thinking about signing up for their long distance service, think again. Companies like Pioneer Telephone and Opex offer long distance service that is just as good, but their domestic and international long distance rates are way cheaper.

I periodically get billing questions from younger people who have cell phones, but who have never seen a regular landline phone bill. They’re usually wondering why their landline phone bill doesn’t have all of their calls on it.

The big difference between cell phone bills and landline phone bills, is that all incoming and outgoing calls on a cell phone are logged, because those minutes count against your bill, while only outgoing calls on a landline bill are logged, because they are charging you a per minute rate, and you need to see what you’re paying for. In other words, both bills only show you the stuff that affects how much your bill is.

Since most people who have a landline phone service pay a flat rate for all for their local calls per month, none of the incoming and outgoing local calls are included on your bill. The same holds true for long distance phone service, since you don’t get charged for incoming long distance calls, they don’t show up on your bill. So, the only calls that are listed on your monthly landline, or long distance phone bill, are the ones that you have made to someone else.

When viewing a long distance phone bill, and you have more than one phone number, the outgoing long distance calls will be listed by the number that made the call, and will include the time the call was made, how long the call lasted, and how much you were changed for the call. Then, after all the calls are listed for that phone number, there will be a subtotal for that phone number. The same will be true for any toll free numbers you may have, since you have to pay for any calls people made to your toll free numbers too.

Finally, on a landline phone bill, just as on a cell phone bill, there will be a page full of local, city, county, state and federal taxes and fees. Most of these taxes and fees are based on a percentage of your total bill, and then, just for “sh*ts and giggles”, your phone company will stick in a recovery fee, or two, and anything else they think they can get away with.

Since most people’s landline phone bills include taxes and fees that can add up to more than the actual phone usage, tons of people are switching their homes and businesses to VoIP. VoIP is becoming so popular, because you can get unlimited local and long distance phone service for less than $20.00 per month, and the total taxes and fees are usually less than $3.00 per month. And, what’s really funny, is that most people are now using VoIP under the guise of “Digital Phone Service”, not knowing that digital phone service is just another name VoIP phone service, internet phone service, voice over IP phone service, broadband phone service and others.

If you want to save some money, order your phone service from Phonepower for less than $20.00 per month and quit giving your money to the big landline phone companies.

If you are going to make an international phone call from the US to Malaysia, you will first need to dial the US exit code, which is 011, then you dial the Malaysian country code of 60, followed by the person’s area code, which is a 1 or 2 number area code in Malaysia, then the person’s phone number. So the number would look like this: 011+60+03+6185-3931

If you are trying to tell someone in another country what your phone number is, and you live in Malaysia, then your phone number is: Their country’s exit code, plus 60, plus area code, then your number. The number will look like this: xxx+60+03+6185-3931, where xxx is their country’s exit code.

I’ve had customers email me over the years, because they were trying to order long distance phone service online, but didn’t know what some of the questions on the order form were asking. So, I decided to do a series of videos, that walk customers through the online ordering process. This video shows step-by-step directions for ordering TCI 3 cent long distance phone service. So, if you’re ordering Total Call International long distance phone service, and don’t know what you’re supposed to put in some of the blanks, watch this video first.

Mark Sullivan, over at PCWorld figures Google Voice is going to be one of the top 10 up and comers in 2010 because of it’s potential ability to deliver cheap or free long distance service. Of course, Skype does this now, and has millions of users, but it looks like Google’s service might not tie you to your computer like Skype does.

Of course, I think that Google’s Android is going to end up taking over the world in the next 5 years, and Google Voice and other VoIP type services won’t be worth anything…. Which brings us back to what Google’s really going to do with Google Voice. I figure they will give it away for free, and kill the VoIP industry in one fell swoop, just like they did to the web stats industry with Google Analytics. What they do with Google Voice once they’ve killed the VoIP industry is anyone’s guess right now.

It’s kind of hard selling long distance phone service anymore. Sure, you have the random customer wander in who still wants long distance service, but why bother? In the old days (pre 2005) everyone had long distance service. Of course, now, you can’t make an average of $3.00 per customer per month, like you used to be able to do when discount long distance phone service was 6.9 cents per minute instead of 2.7, but any customer that is willing to sign up for a long distance account still gets my unwavering attention, even though they are now only worth an average of 32 cents per month….. Seriously, what’s wrong with me? Why do I bother? LOL

With VoIP now costing less than $5.00 per month for unlimited service, and unlimited cell phone plans now under $100.00 per month, why would anyone bother spending the money on local and long distance service? If you know the answer, drop me a line.
