I know I'm late, but thank you for posting this review. Because of this, I was influenced to purchase the bare boxer for my weekend trips half a year ago (it fits much better in my Osprey aura than the larger bear canisters I have). FYI, the Bare Boxer Contender is actually lighter now, weighing in at 1 lb 9.6 oz, making the weight to volume ratio slightly better. Still the lightest hard sided canister out there though. Great write up!

I spoke to a ranger a couple weeks ago. He said backpackers will need Half Dome permits but will not fall under the quota system and may pick up Half Dome permits when they get their wilderness permits. We're coming through from Yolo in August and he said we'd be considered through-hikers and wouldn't fall under the quota system either but didn't yet know how or where we would get our Half Dome permits. He said I was the first caller with that question. Has anybody heard how this situation will be handled?

Isn't this the same website that handles campground reservations for the summer months? My vote is on smooth sailing server-wise, and I think the big disappointments will be for the people from Kentucky who planned their whole August vacation around hiking Half Dome on a Saturday, and didn't hear they needed a permit.

When registration for the second annual Levi Leipheimer Gran Fondo bike ride opened, the server crashed in under two minutes. It took them quite a while to get it up and running again.

Wow, nice video, time to upgrade my camera. By the way, we have so much snow in Southern California you could snowshoe for days!

I don't think the permits will change much. I wanted to see them charge for it and do it every day. I've been on the trail for different destinations and the crowd that heads for Half Dome is a different bunch - hauling gallon jugs of water and packless, in shorts and stupid shoes regardless of season. I've been on the trail at 1 in the morning and there are lights going up the cables. People are up there 24/7 and unless they station rangers in shifts at the bottom of the subdome they'll have a hard time enforcing it.
