It seems like once a year, I have done a post on wasteful spending by our California legislators. My focus isn't on improper perks our legislators grant themselves as much as it is on entire departments we must fund. It can be truly maddening.

I'm of a libertarian bent - I believe in conservative fiscal principles and liberal social freedoms. Personal, individual responsibility! In general, I think our state government should focus our limited resources on:

Provide for an economic environment which encourages business growth.

Provide for state-wide infrastructure projects, such as roads, levies, water, power, etc.

Laws and enforcement: Courts, AG, State police agencies

Basic legislature duties

Basic Executive duties

Regulate (not operate) business practices that an average layperson could not reasonably be expected to understand AND using those services could result in permanent harm or death (medical boards, etc.). This does not include telling us what kinds of foods we can buy and eat, where (and if) we can smoke cigarettes, etc.

100% of state education funds should be in the form of vouchers. Competition among schools and teachers will result in a better "product" being produced.

The bottom line is, if it isn't involved in the day-to-day or long-term operations of the state, or designed to promote and enhance the state's economy, stay away from it!

That all being said, I'd like you to take a look at this site. It lists every single state department which we fund. I caution you to medicate yourself as you see fit to help counter to spike in your blood pressure you will likely experience!

Some questions I have after looking at this list:

Why would <strike>the state</strike> WE be paying for any ethnic or cultural museum, commission or caucus? Are not these things the domain of private ethnic or cultural organizations? What could possibly be the justification for taking our tax dollars to pay for these things? If YOU want to visit a certain type of museum, go right ahead. Just be sure you bring the cash to get in. It is not the state's job to ensure you are culturally aware or exposed to the arts.

Why do we pay for all of these political caucus'? The state assembly and senate each has a Democrat and a Republican caucus. I'm sure each of these caucus' has it's own paid director, staff and researchers. Why? If the either party wants to look into or promote some issue, feel free to do so ON YOUR OWN DIME.

The California Commission on the Status of Women? Really? Their 2009-2010 legislative agenda says they've been around for FOUR DECADES! Why would we have a state-financed agency that ADVOCATES for one particular gender (or race or religion or IQ or hobby or anything)? If the state is taking money from all of us, they need to only do things that benefit all of us.

How's this for a double-edged sword? We have the Bureau of Electronic and Appliance Repair, Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation. On the good side, it used to be two separate departments, and now it's only one. On the bad side, why do we have this at all? Their website says, "At the Bureau, we strive to protect consumers, work with and educate businesses so we can be mutually successful in today's challenging marketplace." How about we let businesses and individuals be responsible for their own success? That's not government's job.

There are dozens and dozens of these types of departments. Let's cut them first, then let's cut down the legislator's staff, THEN we can consider cutting some of the critical services.

Until we get serious in cutting non-essential services, and not worrying about stepping on politically sensitive toes, we're not going to get our state back on course. Like our federal government, we are drowning in debt. We simply must spend within our means.

You may have seen some department that you have some special connection with - we all do - but our funding is not unlimited. We must make choices. I choose to save critical services.
As I mentioned, I signed up for the e-mail service a few months ago and picked my county for the notifications. The link to the alert is as follows;

http://www.emergencyemail.org/newsemergency/anmviewer.asp?a=488&z=43

It is a must have. Also, along the same lines, click on the link below. It all ties in to us living in California, although, the effects vary from local to local. Here on the central coast, especially north county, we are pretty immune to the border clashes and the residue effects of our open border policy.
http://americanpatrol.com/

I personally use the EDIS-by-Email service, and it has already come in VERY handy on two occasions. The first was for a tornado that touched down in my SF Bay Area town (!), and the second time was for a Shelter-In-Place alert we got as the police were looking for a shooting suspect that was in our area.

BTW, I have the alerts go to my email address in full-text mode, and just the headlines go to my cell phone (to save memory space).
---

Most states and localities have some sort of Emergency Alert System. It may be a tornado siren or a TV or radio alert that interrupts your regular programming.

California has a system that goes a bit further. It is called the Emergency Digital Information System (EDIS). It is a system where you can receive an alert via an email message. What is nice, is that you can get an alert sent to your cell phone as well.

The system allows you to select the specific county for which you want alerts - in some cases, allowing you to choose specific cities. You can also select the type and severity of emergency about which you're notified.

For instance, you can choose to receive an alert that occurs in any of the 9 Bay Area counties for a chemical, meteorological or transportation emergency. You can decide if you want to know if it is of an Extreme, Severe, Moderate, Minor or Unknown severity. You can select one or all of them.

Having these alerts sent to your cell phone will allow you to know about emergencies that happen while you are away from home. These alerts could be life-savers.
---

Emergencies don't always occur when we're safely inside of our homes. Getting as much advanced notice of an emergency that may affect you or a family member can be crucially important.

Start with a Google search of your area's emergency alert system. I had the best results when starting on the county basis - doing a Google search of 'Contra Costa County emergency alerts'. Drill down to find out which ways you can receive notification.

If your area does not appear to have a program, search for your local CERT - Community Emergency Response Team (national site with state links here). Let them know you think an alert program would be a good idea. Send them a link to the California system as an example of what can work.
---

You can contact Chief Instructor by visiting the Accept The Challenge blog and following the links.

Hello, all!

I'm very excited and honored to have been asked to contribute to the California Preppers Network. I figure that the more people we can all reach with our message of self-reliance, the better off we'll all be.

A little about me and what I do:

I'm a native Californian. I've spent my entire life, so far, in Northern Cal - with the exception of one year in the Los Angeles area. I own a company, Bison Risk Management Associates where we teach various self-reliance workshops. Everything from emergency preparedness for individuals and businesses, to safety awareness, pepper spray and stun gun usage, and firearms training from beginner to advanced.

I've been involved with Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Recovery for more than 30 years. Many moons ago, I worked for a bank with a Stagecoach theme (hint, hint), and had some basic training and understanding of emergency preps.

I was able to put much of what I learned into practice when I was transferred to Southern California in 1983 to help build the bank's emergency contingency plans to deal with the 1984 Summer Olympics. I learned a great deal about what works and what won't.

It crossed all disciplines - civil unrest, terrorism, food and water shortages, transportation issues, data storage and protection, financial preps - EVERYTHING.

And being in California, we were well grounded in earthquake, wild fire, mud slide and other natural disasters.

Fast forward to 1998. By that time, I was the CIO of a community bank in San Francisco, and was tasked with the Y2K preps. What I learned there was how to do more with less. We didn't have the deep pockets of a national bank. Every dime that was spent had to be justified.

It was all steak and no sizzle!

It was that Y2K experience that really helped to form my philosophy on emergency preps. You can spin your wheels making up plans for hundred of possible contingencies - earthquakes, tornadoes, EMPs, terrorist attacks, mud slides, job loss, hyper-inflation, food shortages, water contamination, etc.

But when you compare your plans, you'll start to notice patterns. The same impacts pop up, again and again. For instance, it doesn't matter if you lose your electrical power because of an EMP, or because a drunk hit a power pole, or because a terrorist bombed a power station. You have no power, and you need to deal with THAT!

There are 12 Impacts you, as an individual, should consider.

I'll be talking about those impacts, how to determine how they will affect your life (possibly VERY differently from how it will affect others) and all kinds of self-reliance topics. From grains to guns!

For instance, I'm in the middle of a bunch of experiments on malting my own grains. I've been an avid home brewer since 1980, and don't want to give it up if there were a sudden loss of malted grains.

One of the side benefits of getting the sugars out of grains (mashing and lautering for you non-brewing geeks!) is that this sweet liquid doesn't just have to be fermented into alcohol. It can also be processed into a syrup, for instance.

Anyways, I'll be doing posts on a variety of topics here on a regular basis. I invite you all to visit my Accept The Challenge blog for my daily posts as well. Anyone who wishes to contact me directly, can send an email to info@BisonRMA.com

Security Alert! At least 122 people have been confirmed dead in early counts.

People were advised to stay away from California beaches as a precaution.

Senior chief Kirk McKay of the U.S. Coast Guard station in Morro Bay said that people should not venture onto beaches or marinas. "An advisory is to keep people away from beaches and marinas because there could be strong surges," he said.

An advisory means a tsunami is possible. Forecasters said there may be strong currents, but did not expect widespread inundation or damage to occur. (Continued ...)

Sponsored By

Why prep?

This is one of the reasons to prep.

By Joshua Rhett Miller

Gun rights advocates have a California police detective in their crosshairs after he apparently posted comments on Facebook advocating that "open carry" supporters should be shot.
East Palo Alto Police Det. Rod Tuason apparently posted the remarks on his Facebook page in response to a friend's status update, which suggested that gun advocates who carry unloaded weapons openly — which is legal in California — should do so in places like "Oakland, Richmond and East Palo Alto" and not just in "hoity toity" cities.
"Haha we had one guy last week try to do it!" Tuason replied. "He got proned out [laid face-down on the ground] and reminded where he was at and that turds will jack him for his gun in a heartbeat!"
Several comments later, the detective suggested shooting the gun rights advocates, some of whom have carried firearms openly in recent weeks in California's Bay Area, particularly at Starbucks locations.
"Sounds like you had someone practicing their 2nd amendment rights last night!" Tuason wrote. "Should've pulled the AR out and prone them all out! And if one of them makes a furtive movement … 2 weeks off!!!" -- referring to the modified duty, commonly known as desk duty, that typically follows any instance in which an officer is investigated for firing his weapon.
Those comments caught the attention of a California attorney and blogger, as well as a Virginia man who started a Facebook group calling for Tuason's termination.
John Taylor, whose Facebook group had 54 members as of midday Friday, said the Facebook thread confirmed gun owners' worst fears.
"Any sworn officer who suggests shooting law-abiding citizens for exercising their most basic constitutional rights deserves the full wrath of America's gun owners," Taylor told FoxNews.com. "It's an affront."
California's Penal Code makes it illegal to carry concealed weapons without a county-issued license. But it is legal to carry an unloaded weapon in plain view in a holster. In most cases, it is illegal for an unconcealed weapon to be loaded.
Taylor, of Arlington, Va., who has a concealed weapons permit in his home state, said he planned to write a letter to the East Palo Alto Police Department demanding that Tuason be fired.
"The targeting, harassment and intimidation of law-abiding citizens who are peacefully agitating for their rights by a police officer is an abomination to the Constitution, and is in fact the exact reason our Founding Fathers created the Second Amendment," Taylor said. "Police officers who think they are going to get between law-abiding Americans and their Second Amendment rights are going to find themselves in the line of fire."
Tuason's comments were first noticed by California attorney Kevin Thomason, who posted a screen grab of the detective's remarks on his Web site on Sunday.
"[Tuason] didn't realize that actual PRO-GUN people also read Facebook," Thomason wrote. "Amazingly, he posted the following comment about law abiding gun owners on a friend's page. Basically, he's saying 'prone them out' (face down on the ground), and if anyone moves, kill them. I don't make this crap up."
Thomason, a member of the National Rifle Association, wrote that Tuason's comments were "worth a call" to the East Palo Alto City Council, as well as to his superior officers.
Tuason, who has since removed his Facebook profile, did not return messages seeking comment on Friday. He is reportedly being investigated by the police department's professional standards division regarding the Facebook remarks.
East Palo Alto Police Sgt. Rod Norris said he was unable to comment on the matter, but Capt. Carl Estelle told the San Jose Mercury News that police officials must be careful not to violate Tuason's First Amendment rights, since the comments appeared on his personal Web site.
"In no way are his personal comments reflective of any policies or procedures here at the department nor does he speak for the police department," Estelle told the newspaper.
> Goes unnoticed, and unsung.
> To the welfare of our land,
>
> Or the ordinary fellow
> Who in times of war and strife,
> Goes off to serve his country
> And offers up his life?
>
> The politician's stipend
> And the style in which he lives,
> Are often disproportionate,
> To the service that he gives.
> Is paid off with a medal
> And perhaps a pension, small.
>
> It's so easy to forget them,
> For it is so many times
> That our Bobs and Jims and Johnnys,
> Went to battle, but we know,
>
> It is not the politicians
> With their compromise and ploys,
> Who won for us the freedom
> That our country now enjoys.
>
> Should you find yourself in danger,
> With your enemies at hand,
> Would you really want some cop-out,
> With his ever waffling stand?
>
> Or would you want a Soldier--
> His home, his country, his kin,
> Just a common Soldier,
> Who would fight until the end.
>
> He was just a common Soldier,
> And his ranks are growing thin,
> But his presence should remind us
> We may need his like again.
>
> For when countries are in conflict,
> We find the Soldier's part
> Is to clean up all the troubles
> That the politicians start.
>
> If we cannot do him honor
> While he's here to hear the praise,
> Then at least let's give him homage
> At the ending of his days.
>
> In the paper that might say:
That way it isn't gun control/ You ain't got ammo all you have then is an expensive stick or metal rock! Re-loading can/is also expensive for those on a tight shoe string but there one company that make an inexpensive re-loading kit. Now I have never used this product, don't know them but in talking to folks that re-load it works and it is easy. Here the link to Lee Precision. I just thought it could be something to stash in your BOB just in case. Check 'em and make up your mind. http://www.leeprecision.com/cgi/catalog/browse.cgi?1231039417.4324=/html/catalog/cleeloader.html
A Bug Out Bag allows you to grab what you need quickly and evacuate should a disaster happen.

Most experts suggest that your BOB should contain enough supplies to last for at least seventy two hours. Since most major disasters can disrupt services and normal life for longer than 72 hours. Make sure your Bag is built to fit your needs. When putting your bag together take into consideration any special needs or items that you or your family might need.

These are photos of my wife’s bag. I choose a full frame backpack with an adjustable hip belt for her because of the distance she would have to walk if there were another earthquake and the freeways are shut down again. This bag is designed with the idea that she walks to a friends house one day, another friends house another day, and on the third day walk home. The car always has a case of water and she will add that to the pack before she begins to head home.

The bag includes:

Walking shoes and extra socks

Pair of Pants

...EXTENDED PERIOD OF SIGNIFICANT RAIN AND MOUNTAIN SNOW THROUGH
THIS WEEK FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA...

A VERY POWERFUL WEST TO EAST JET STREAM WILL ALLOW A SERIES OF
STRONG STORM SYSTEMS TO CONTINUE TRACKING INTO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
THIS WEEK....BRINGING THE THREAT OF SIGNIFICANT AND POSSIBLY
EXCESSIVE RAINFALL TO THE REGION.

THE FIRST STORM SYSTEM MOVED RAPIDLY THROUGH THE REGION TODAY
UNSTABLE AIR AND RESIDUAL MOISTURE BEHIND THE FRONT IS EXPECTED TO
BRING ADDITIONAL SHOWERS AND POSSIBLE THUNDERSTORMS TO THE AREA AT
TIMES THROUGH TONIGHT. ADDITIONAL RAINFALL THROUGH TONIGHT SHOULD BE
LESS THAN ONE QUARTER OF AN INCH FOR MOST AREAS...WITH LOCAL AMOUNTS
UP TO A THIRD OF AN INCH IN ANY HEAVIER SHOWERS OR THUNDERSTORMS.
WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR LOCAL HEAVY RAIN PERSISTING...A FLASH FLOOD
WATCH REMAIN IN EFFECT FOR THE 2008 AND 2009 BURN AREAS INCLUDING
THE MORRIS AND STATION BURN AREAS THROUGH LATE TONIGHT.

A WEAKER STORM SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO AFFECT THE REGION TUESDAY
AFTERNOON INTO TUESDAY NIGHT. THE THIRD AND MOST LIKELY STRONGEST
STORM SYSTEM OF THE WEEK IS EXPECTED WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON INTO
THURSDAY NIGHT. A COLD AND UNSTABLE AIR MASS WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP A
THREAT OF SHOWERS ON FRIDAY.

FOR THE ENTIRE WEEK...RAINFALL TOTALS OF 4 TO 8 INCHES CAN BE
EXPECTED IN COASTAL AND VALLEY AREAS...AND 8 TO 16 INCHES IN THE
FOOTHILLS AND MOUNTAINS. LOCAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS OVER 20 INCHES WILL
BE POSSIBLE ACROSS FAVORED SOUTH FACING COASTAL SLOPES. ACROSS THE
ANTELOPE VALLEY...RAINFALL TOTALS OF 2 TO 4 INCHES CAN BE EXPECTED
THROUGH FRIDAY...WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS IN THE FOOTHILLS. THIS
WILL LIKELY BE THE WETTEST WEEK SINCE EARLY 2005.

SNOW LEVELS ARE EXPECTED TO FLUCTUATE BUT RANGE BETWEEN 4000 FEET
AND 6000 FEET THROUGH WEDNESDAY...THEN INCREASE TO ABOVE 7000 FEET
WEDNESDAY NIGHT BEFORE FALLING BACK TO 4500 TO 5000 FEET THURSDAY...
AND TO 3500 TO 4000 FEET ON FRIDAY.

THE CUMULATIVE EFFECT OF THESE STORM SYSTEMS MAY BRING FLOODING
THREATS TO THE REGION ON A SCALE THAT HAS NOT BEEN SEEN SINCE 2005.
LARGE AMOUNTS OF EXPECTED PRECIPITATION...AS WELL AS THE POTENTIAL
FOR HIGH INTENSITY RAINFALL...WILL BRING THE THREAT OF SIGNIFICANT
FLASH FLOODING AND POTENTIALLY DEADLY DEBRIS FLOWS...ESPECIALLY TO
THE RECENT BURN AREAS. THERE WILL ALSO BE A THREAT OF URBAN AND
SMALL STREAM FLOODING AND NUMEROUS ROCKSLIDES...ESPECIALLY LATER IN
THE WEEK AS SOILS BECOME MORE SATURATED. AS THE WEEK PROGRESSES...
MOST STREAMS AND NORMALLY DRY WASHES WILL BE FLOWING. IF THE STRONG
STORM MATERIALIZES FOR THE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH THURSDAY TIME
FRAME...THERE COULD ALSO BE SOME MAIN STEM RIVER FLOODING CONCERNS.

PERSONS LIVING IN AND CLOSE TO RECENTLY BURNED AREAS OR IN LOW-LYING
AREAS SUBJECT TO RIVER AND STREAM FLOODING SHOULD STAY TUNED FOR
LATER FORECASTS AND WARNINGS. LISTEN TO LOCAL NEWS MEDIA AND NOAA
WEATHER RADIO FOR UPDATES.

Sprinkle the powder where ever these creatures travel. The powder dehydrates the slugs and they die.

Low-fat milk For Aphids -- To control aphids apply nonfat dried milk, mixed according to the box, onto the leaves of your plants. The aphids get stuck in the milky residue and perish.

Slug Terminator -- Spray slugs with a mix of 1 part vinegar and 1 part water to terminate your slugs. Mix vinegar and water into a trigger sprayer and spray directly onto the slug. They will die almost immediately. Also spray the ground around your plants and any hidden slugs will come out of the sprayed soil and die.

Drunken Slug -- Set a shallow pan of beer (the darker the better) out into the garden where the slugs hang out. They cannot resist the taste of beer and crawl in and drown.

Slug trap -- Use a plastic pop bottle to catch slugs. Remove the lid, cut the pop bottle just below the curve of the neck all the way around. Invert the neck piece and staple it inside of the main piece. Throw in some slug bait or some beer and set in the garden where the slugs are doing the damage. The slugs can crawl in but don't crawl out.

Slug Stopper -- Sprinkle a ring of moth crystals around the base of your plants to keep the slugs from eating your plants. The slugs as well as cats, dogs and raccoons will stay away from these plants.

Weather Forecasting Crickets-- You can tell the outside temperature in Fahrenheit by counting the number of chirps made by a cricket in 14 seconds then add 40 to it.

Earwig Catcher -- Earwigs like dark, tight places to hide in during the day. Lay some corrugated cardboard out in the garden where you have had earwig damage. The earwigs will climb into the cardboard to hide during the day. Collect the cardboard and burn it.

Codling Moth Broth -- To catch codling moths, use a mixture of 2 parts vinegar and one part molasses. Place this mixture in a tin can and hang it in the apple tree. Clean out the moths and place more mix in the can when needed.

Fly Catcher -- To catch flies, place a piece of meat in a jar. Using a quart jar, place a small piece of meat and ½ inch of water into the jar. Punch a few holes big enough for the flies to crawl in, into the lid of the jar. Screw on the lid and set in a good fly location. When the fly crawls in, it can't get out. Clean out the jar when the smell gets to strong or it gets full of flies.

Yellow Sticky Traps -- To catch white flies, gnats and aphids use STP motor oil treatment or honey. Smear motor oil treatment or honey onto bright yellow plastic and place it amongst your plants with bugs. When the plastic gets full of bugs, wipe them off and reapply STP motor oil treatment or honey and set the trap out again.

How to Get the Skunk Smell off of Your Dog -- 1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, 2 teaspoons baby shampoo, Mix up solution. Thoroughly wet dog and shampoo in. Let sit for 5 minutes then rinse. Be sure not to get the solution in the dog’s eyes. The percentage of Hydrogen Peroxide is not strong enough to bleach the dog’s hair.

Protect Your Grapes from the Birds --, just before your grapes ripen when the birds start to get into them protect your crop with plastic grocery bags. Punch each bag full of air holes. Slip a bag around each bundle of grapes and staple to hold bag in place.

Spank Your Fruit Trees -- For more fruit production, take a rolled up newspaper and spank the day lights out of the trunk of your fruit trees. This action loosens the cambium layer and more sap will flow up to the tree producing more fruit. This is for more fruit the following year.

Mini Greenhouses -- When you first place your seedlings out you will want to protect them from too much wind, sun or frost. A gallon milk jug with the bottom cut out and the lid off is the perfect mini green house for setting out your plants. If it is going to frost, just put the lid on for the night. If the jug keeps blowing off, cut off the top of the handle. Next run a stick through the handle, this will secure the jug to the stick. Push the stick down into the ground to anchor it. The wind will not pick it up now.

Mini Shade House -- When first setting out seedling the can be wind burned or sunburned. To help them acclimate your plants to the great outdoors you can protect them with a mini shade house. Cut out a 18 inch by 24 inch piece of woven fence material, being sure to leave the extra wire that sticks out when you cut it. Bend it into the shape of an arch. Cut a piece of burlap 20 inches by 26 inches. Hook the burlap over the ends of the fence material. Set the whole unit over your transplanted seedlings. Leave this over them for a week to harden off your plants. This is great for working people because you never build up heat under this covering so you don't have to take it off during the day if the sun shines to hot.

Dress up Your Garden --Use old panty hose for tying up your plants. The panty hose are strong and will not cut into the tender stems. Another use for old panty hose is to place them over the heads of your cabbage. As your cabbage grows the panty hose will stretch.

Canned Corn -- To keep birds and squirrels from eating your corn, place aluminum pop or beer cans on your corn ear. Prepare the cans by cutting off the tab end. Next punch air holes all the way around the can. When you see birds or squirrels getting into your corn, slip a can over each ear until it is ripe.

Eggshell Planters --Eggshells make great plant starters. When you crack your egg, just take off the tip of one end. Rinse out the shell and poke a small drain hole into the bottom of the shell while it is still wet. Fill shell 3/4 full of potting soil and plant seeds. When it is time to plant out just crush the egg shell and plant into the ground. The egg shell adds lime to help feed the soil and plant.

Mildew on Your Peonies -- Sprinkle your peonies with cinnamon to stop molds and fungi. Tokyo researchers have found that fungi will not grow in the presence of cinnamon.

Clothespin for Roses -- To avoid being stuck when working with roses, use a spring type clothes pin to hold the stem instead of your fingers.

Baking Soda Spray -- Use baking soda to control fungal diseases, especially black spot on roses. Dissolve 1 t baking soda in 1 quart of water, add 1t liquid soap. Spray entire leaf surfaces of plants every 3 days for 21 days. Reapply after every rain.

No Room for a Garden? -- If you want to grow a tomato plant or a cucumber plant and you have no room. Get a bale of straw, poke some holes in it and pour compost into the holes. Plant your vegetables right into the bale. Water when needed. The decomposing bale will feed your vegetables all season.

Soak Your Feet or Feed Your Tomatoes -- Epsom salt is great for getting your tomato plants to produce large crops of tomatoes. It also helps to prevent blossom end rot. Use 1/4 cup around the base of each tomato plant every year. Sowing of Small Seeds

Season salt or spice shakers are great to use to sow small seeds. -- Place your tiny seeds in the shakers with some fine sand and shake away. The sand helps to evenly distribute your seeds so they don't end up in one pile.

Quick Sprout Carrots -- Soak your carrot seeds in a glass of warm water for 24 hours. Drain off water and place carrot seeds evenly on several wet paper towels. About ½ inches apart. Layer the paper towels in a glass baking dish. Place a sheet of plastic wrap between the layers. Cover the whole dish with plastic wrap. Place in a warm location for about a week. When you start to see little white sprout coming out of the end of the carrot seed it is time to plant them. Place the paper towel in the garden row. Cover lightly with soil and water lightly. Your carrots should be up in a few days.

Rid Your Sidewalks of Weeds and Grass -- To kill weeds and grass in unwanted places such as the cracks in your sidewalks, pour boiling salt water directly onto the weeds or grass for an instant kill.

Hammer Those Tough Weeds -- For those hard to pull weeds, hook them with the claw end of a hammer and pull.

Pickle Those Weeds -- To kill weeds in areas that you don't plan to plant anything you can use a solution of vinegar and salt. 1/4 cup vinegar, 2 t salt, 1 quart water, Spray weed until soaked. Heat of the day is best.
I'm hoping to be able to start actively participating on this blog again soon. Thanks for reading!

Catman

Many people are talking openly about revolution. I'm one of them.

There's nothing to be ashamed of in decrying the woeful state of affairs in this land and calling for an alteration in the course this nation has taken. On the contrary, to remain silent, and accept the "hope and change" that is being foisted upon you is shameful.

It is my fervent prayer that the scent of blood and gunpowder never fill the streets of America again. That violence will be the final argument made by Americans demanding the restoration of their rights, freedoms, and lawful government.

Fighting a revolution does not mean that you have to take up arms and head off to engage in combat with the forces sent to assure your continued servitude. Not all of us can take another human being's life. Some of us, for reasons of conscience, will not engage in violence. Not all of us are physically capable of taking the punishment of a life of privation, and asperity.

But we all must do something to impede the progress of the enemy.

It is my belief that most of us are engaged in an epic struggle against the forces who would extinguish the light of Liberty forever. To turn this world into a vast feudal state where most are serfs, doomed to toil for the few at the top. Some of us may not even realize that we have joined the struggle. The thought that many of us are fighting a low intensity revolution has not come to the minds of people everywhere.

We must foster this idea, low intensity revolution, and spread it. It will give hope to those who feel hopeless. It will give direction to those who know not what to do. It will give those who want to fight a purpose, a mission. A way to strike back without exposing themselves to undue risk.

Already people march and display signs threatening the livelihood of politicians. The politician's next meal comes at your discretion. If you put him/her out of office, and treat him/her and their family as pariahs within their home districts, the message will be loud and clear. You ignore us at your peril.

This is low intensity revolution. We have already won a small victory as those in who sit in our capitols are starting to fear for their jobs. It will be a larger victory when they start doing what we tell them.

Already the fear on The Hill and within the corridors of state capitols is palpable. It is so bad that these fools are willing to risk further backlash from Americans as they once again take up the subject of amnesty for illegal aliens. The Democrats are pushing hard for this legislation, as they hope the additional estimated THIRTY MILLION VOTES will offset the loss of votes from angry Americans. They hope these votes will be enough to keep them in power. Don't think its just the Democrats, the Republicans are eyeing that block of votes hoping it will be enough to put them back in power.

We must do more.

Napoleon Bonaparte is thought to have once said "An army travels on its stomach."

The foe we face travels on its wallet. And we can deny them the sustenance that allows them to make further incursions on our freedoms.

People have cut back severely on their buying. Everything from big ticket items, to the small luxuries. The loss in sales has hurt government in an unprecedented manner as tax revenues have failed to materialize.

Our enemy pays its fickle dogs of war from the monies extorted from you through fines, taxes, fees, levies, and assessments.

Even now, as states and municipalities contemplate raising tax rates to mollify special interest groups suffering from long overdue cuts in their budgets, police forces whine about changes in their compensation plans. Consider Cleveland's public employee unions cutting their own throat. This isn't an isolated incident. More of these scenarios are playing out across this nation.

Hey Mr. Policeman, you forgot who you worked for, and now you're going to lose your job and everything that job bought. That's right, you snickered when we told you we paid your salaries as you routinely lied and violated our rights. You forgot the cardinal rule, "He who pays the piper calls the tune." It wasn't your supervisors, or even the city council who paid the piper. It was us, and we're not paying anymore.

I look forward to seeing you at the freeway onramp standing around in your black SS uniform with a sign that says, "Will intimidate citizens for food."

As tax revenues continue to fall, it is incumbent upon all of us to ensure that the revenues continue to dry up no matter how high they raise the tax rate. The reason? The faceless, unaccountable bureaucrats at every level of government will lose their jobs at an accelerated rate. Without them to implement and oversee the myriad of useless laws and regulations, the house of cards will fall. Already they are being furloughed and laid off. Let's help them begin a new life in 2010 by becoming productive people instead of just unthinking leeches.

How can we do this?

Don't buy new unless you absolutely have to. Barter, trade, exchange with like minded people in your communities. Start a neighborhood co-op this spring. It isn't too early to begin planning your spring and summer gardens. Work with your friends and neighbors to create a wide variety of available fresh vegetables and fruits. Trade within your circle. If you're not spending it, they can't tax it.

Obey the speed limit and other traffic laws. It sounds stupid, but it keeps your insurance rates down, and keeps the revenue from fines out of their pockets. Help the guy who may be a few minutes late getting back to the parking meter by dropping in a nickel. It'll keep the fines out of the local coffers.

Get a used bicycle to make your local neighborhood trips, and skip using the car. Don't use gasoline, and screw the Arabs.

Use your imagination to develop ways to keep your own money and avoid giving it to the government.

The Powers That Be, PTB, have tried to cajole us into taking on further debt to jump start the economy. Most of us ain't buying that crap as million dollar bonuses are paid out to corporate heads as they lay off the rank and file. Banks charge up to 80% interest on credit cards, while paying you 2% on your savings account.

This is theft, and it has to end.

Speaking of theft. How many of you wanted to be a pirate when you were a kid? Well, never forget International Talk Like A Pirate Day. And realize its not too late to become a real life pirate.

Pirate everything you can. Music, books, movies. Go crazy.

Why?

Simple, the corporations and the artists who created these works donated millions of dollars to put some of the worst offenders into public office. Now, its payback time.

If you don't give them your money, the government can't collect sales taxes, and the artists and corporations can't throw money at the politicians. Nice how that works out, and you still get to enjoy some first rate entertainment!

I'll put up a post in the next day or two on pirating made easy.

The PTB have thrown trillions of dollars out there to places that wasted it, didn't need it, didn't use it, or absconded with it by throwing lavish parties and allowing privileged people to walk away with what amounted to bags of cash.

All that has done is dilute the money supply and drive up inflation, and lower the value of the currency.

We shouldn't care. We should bite the bullet and take the hit, and allow the mighty to fall. We have little, and little to lose. The wealthy have much and a lot to lose. I would willingly sacrifice what I have to ensure my children have a better world to grow up in.

How?

Simple. If you have a lowly dollar bill in your wallet, and that's all you have, and tomorrow it is worth a penny, what will happen? Chances are you'll just go on and shrug it off. Think about the people who have millions of dollars and will see the value of it decrease by 99%.

How will they manage? How will they cope? What will it do to the world economy? See, that's why the PTBs are trying to establish an alternative reserve currency, because ultimately that is what is going to happen. If they get another currency established, they will be able to preserve their own wealth, while destroying what is left of ours.

We need to make sure it crashes before they can get out.

By that point we should be in a position to seize control of our government. We'll just repudiate any foreign debt, claim that the whole system is illegal, offer up Bernanke and all of the others to the Chinese to place on trial and execute.

The people of Iceland have already done this, and we should follow suit. God bless them!

And watch the world crumble.

I think it will be cool when Bernanke has to pay for the bullet the Chinese will execute him with.

A Great Read

Check out CatMans blog for today.
If possible avoid the "shooting range", finding an out of the way spot to shoot allows you to shoot at your own style target in various scenarios as well as pick and choose your own distances instead of the standard pre determined ranges.

Vary your targets. Instead of punching holes in paper try hanging paper plates, tin can lids, clay pigeons etc. at various ranges and heights.

Practice while wearing the equipment you might be wearing in a SHTF situation.

Practice weapon transition, go from a long gun to a handgun and then back to a long gun with out loosing control of any of them.

A holster tip, if ya can't reholster and secure the handgun with one hand then you need to change holsters. In a worse case situation where you may need to do a weapon change you don't have time to fight with a holster to get your weapon secure. The same thing applies in a situation where you may have to walk up on someone and handcuff or search them.

Practice with all your weapons with no sights. Take a piece of tape and tape over the rear sight.

The "standard" with a handgun is that you don't touch the trigger until your on target however in a more realistic scenario your hammer should be ready to drop as soon as your front sight hits the center mass of your target. As a revolver shooter this means that as soon as I get a grip on the weapon and it starts to come out of the holster the trigger finger is already at work and by the time I'm crossing the target with the front sight the hammer is all the way back at the point of no return. This can also be accomplished with most semi autos as long as your familiar with the weapon. DO NOT run out to the range and try this, all you will get for your efforts is a hole in your leg or foot. This is something that should be practiced at home with an empty weapon. Practice ALOT until you get the technique down pat. Being able to do at least 100 dry runs with out the hammer falling until your ready means you might be ready to try live ammunition VERY SLOWLY.

Fast drawing is alot of fun, seeing how fast you can get out and get a round down range. Always remember though that "speed is fine but accuracy is final".

Have someone else go with you to go out and shoot. Have them load your magazines for you and include empty brass as well as not tell you how many rounds are in the mags. Have them go out and hang targets for you along a pre determined walking route. Take a walk and engage targets as you find them having to clear jams and reload as needed.

Take the lids to coffee cans and paint one side red and one side green. Hang these with pieces of fishing line along your designated route. They will swing and spin in any breeze. As you walk only engage the targets that are green.

Practice shooting from your vehicle. Place a target near the front bumper in line with the driver seat. Start from a seated position and exit the vehicle and engage the target. A tip. It is easier for me to leave my right leg extended in the vehicle drop my left knee to the ground and fire from a low cover position between the door and the door post. REMEMBER to stay behind cover.

Use an old railroad tie or something similar to act as a roadside curb. Practice firing from behind it using it as cover, laying parallel to it. Depending upon how your laying you may have to fire off handed and in case will have to fire one handed.

Practice firing from various unusual positions. Sitting, squatting, on your side, on your back. Note that some semi autos will not function when fired upside down. Is one of them yours?

Practice firing while rolling on the ground. Pick a destination and start to roll toward it, every time you roll to your stomach fire one round at your target. A reminder, with a shotgun this can hurt in a hurry as it's difficult to seat the butt properly against your shoulder. The primary purpose of all of this is to put yourself into situations that you may encounter in the field. Practice them now so that if the situation should ever arise it won't be new to you. PLEASE, practice these with an empty weapon to start with, get familiar with what your doing and make sure your able to control your muzzle 100% of the time before you try it with live ammo.

Squirrel

For squirrel, move into an area where there are large oaks with acorns or other large nut and bud bearing trees. Locate cuttings (nut acorn shells the squirrels have cracked open with their teeth. If you can locate a den tree with the bark worn off near entrance holes, sit yourself down at dawn and wait without moving or making noise. This is hard if it is cold..wait.

Squirrels feed at dawn and in the late evening, so you will see them scampering around on logs and in trees. Use a 22 or an air rifle to shoot one and note where it lands on the ground, but sit still, and soon, you might have another one move. Ive shot as many as 6 by just sitting and spotting them and shooting them. Early morning and late evening for shooting squirrels.

Rabbit

Rabbits live in overgrown fields and thickets. First make sure there and no people around and then move into an overgrown field. Move along kicking clumps of grass in order to "jump" a rabbit. Unless you are a superb rifle shot, you won't hit a running rabbit, but wait quietly...the rabbit will make a circle, and eventually come back to its nest. It will hop a few hops and stop. When it stops is when you shoot.

You might carry a shotgun if you have one. The H&R Handy Gun is an excellent inexpensive survival gun. You can get these in large bore 308 and with an extra 20 guage barrel that snaps on. You can lash the extra barrel to your pack frame However, Shotgun shells are rather heavy if you carry a lot of them, but a few buckshot shells and a box of bird shot might be worthwhile, especially if you have time to cache some stores ahead of time. You can shoot game on the run, but shotguns make a hell of a noise compared to a 22 or an air rifle.

Deer

As you travel and patrol, look for deer watering spots and crossings. Locate yourself in a tree or concealed behind a blind of leafy vegetation upwind from where the deer cross. You will get one chance. When the deer approaches, aim carefully. If you are accurate, you will have a weeks worth of excellent meat.

Do not handle rabbit meat if you have cuts on your hands since rabbits sometimes carry the germs for tularemia (rabbit fever). After cooking or roasting, rabbit meat is ok.

You can eat deer raw if you like if the deer looks healthy. A deer is just a glorified goat.

Handle fresh squirrel with care, but they are usually not diseased.

In case you kill a bear or wild hog, under no circumstances should you eat it raw or undercooked since these animals have tiny worms in the meat that causes Trichinosis in humans and this will kill you. For my part, I will cook all wild and domestic meat rather well before I eat it.

Small birds or ducks or geese

You can use yor air rifle or 22 or shotgun to kill any kind of small bird. Even small birds have a sizable breast that is nice little morsel when you are hungry.

Ducks and turkey and geese can be killed on the water with a rifle or shotgun, but small bird shot in a shotgun will not do the job. You need No 4 or larger shot shells. You can hang these birds after removing the insides and slice strips of meat from them to add to the cook pot.

In cold weather, meat will last about a week and sometimes two before it begins to spoil. In predator country, hang it high so that predators will not raid your camp and steal it. In bear country, hang it some distance from the heart of your camp so you won't have to argue with a bear over it.
