Our Administrative Team becomes our Team Leaders who oversee the groups, specialty areas and campers. They are the parents first line of response. If you call camp about your child you will hear from one of the Team Leaders or Camp Directors. Each of us have certain responsibilities and have written a bit about the first few weeks of the summer:

HI Cali-Campers and families, It's me Pam, the Camp Director. Cali-Camp has been part of my life for the past 35 years. How can that be when I'm only 30 (hahaha). This <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1W_9dxT3A-1tzVPPyxaJFznlLvD7DEcUpIZZjKMacESramsFowB5H8_WSgTISl0klMYALXy7GjBLvr8OjbkdrloVeLw6DUvlEPVGBTtQMVzin9auiZIJiRbiWSI1mKvMsn6ccw6dl89h5/s200/WK_2F+Morning+Announcements21.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5492012188948533330" />summer has started out like gangbusters with full participation by all campers and staff showing their "Cali-Camp Spirit". The Spirit Cup ended up with every group which was amazing. We have such a fun summer planned with new themes and some of our old favorites. Our overnights have begun (Boy's tonight and Girl's next week). They are truly memory makers. As I sit here at my desk writing I hear a group walking by calling "Here Snipe", Kevin, Kevin, where are you? This week "Get 'UP' with Cali-Camp" has been unbelievable. The kids have really gotten into it, with "Happy Helper" buttons the BIG hit! Next week is another new week - "Dance / Rap with the Cali-Camp Stars". We're thinking of a kind of Cali-Camp Idol thing with groups performing towards the end of the week. We will be teaching "The Hokey Pokey, Cha-Cha Slide and Line Dancing" ALL Week!
I hope you enjoy meeting our Administrative Team. They are awesome!

HI, my name is Jeff Sworzyn. I am the Operations Director and work at Cali-Camp year round. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZi8o_1InrBum_anRpLQPOWd9cRleF2r9KV87Hez9e281834pkFgilQNtF5FONJFMntHrp9GjkISKTAHjBpK7g1-uk_bX14Hh2R-NqMdM9-lxUsfhrvg7l54nvyp6exYuugOUw9d4DIvVd/s200/Wk3F_Jeff.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5492014180417247874" />Among my favorite activities at camp is running the Bus Cup Challenge. The buses are ringing loud with sounds of camp songs that are cleverly rearranged to win the coveted bus cup! Ever year is a great experience for us and the children.

Kelly Zakosek - 6th year - Cali-Camp has started and it is on it's way to an amazing 45 days this summer. The Fawns, Grizzlies, Cardinals, Eagles / CILT's and Roadrunners have come out with a bang. Roadrunners started off the summer with Tennis and with the help from the counselors the children were taught how to use a forehand, backhand, volley's and serving. The Fawns kicked off<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGwOYuzOX1UnkP6pjLKzjgcj4l_NH-SOZFGfhcOt-Q92fSLO-zmU6g53-G61e26ZiPrn2T1uApp7Wz_uQeE18_G6fycLH-bhtJphWldE9htAwvqn_Hcdhv2rFpja-mX-0-Hhyphenhyphenh9Y_bfaXc/s200/Fr_Kelly8877.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491676992254911746" /> the summer with outstanding Cali-Camp Spirit. Their creative minds took us into laughter with their group cheer and amazing banner. The eleven year old, imaginative Cardinals became the talk of the camp with their skits and creative dramatic presentations. The Grizzlies are enjoying Rocks and Ropes flying down the zip line all period long. Last, but not least the Eagles / CILT's. Words can not describe what a wonderful group of young women and men they are this year. They are enjoying every activity one period at a time and are engaging themselves in activities with younger campers to set a great example for these kids.

Jill Doolin - 13 years - The Cali-Camp Summer of 2010 is well under way and we are having a fantastic time. The campers have tremendous spirit and enthusiasm and the counselors are the best. Whether we are at swimming or go-carts, or visiting some of the many exciting areas in camp, the groups are giving it their best effort and having so much fun. Cali-Camp 2010 has just begun and we can't wait for more...

Hello! My name is Ariel Rowin - 6 years and I am one of the Program Directors here at Cali-Camp (I am the one on the right, on the left is Sarah). I've been attending camp since I was four years old and this summer is my first as a program director. Spirit week and Red,White and Blue weeks were so much fun and "UP!" Week has been spectacular. Cali-Camp is such a wonderful place to spend the summer, sometimes I can't help spending a little extra time in arts and <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 148px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6iKxyUQbnp4dMXEda2GAmGg5IBIdvyd2M7qCv0KzUD6SsstxL9jHrT-RkLy08Vg20vG1dJxjSQpQ01QlUsQvQMcHZBIR2_tujTUQYyzA1mRoX0DW5hq33YScnJd8KTW4PsveBpi5thw8U/s200/Sarah+and+Arile.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491681125343328514" />crafts or acting out my creative side in drama. I look forward to the rest of camp and wish all of you a happy and healthy summer.

Hello Cali-Camp! My name is Sarah (I am the one on the left of Ariel) and I am a Team Leader for Program along with my partner Ariel. This is my first year here and I am happy to say we have had a great start to the summer. As a program specialist I work to make the themes come alive.
The first week we had the "Cali-Camp Spirit" where I was impressed with the great smiles and support of the Cali-Camp atmosphere.
Week number two brought us the friendly competitions of "Red, White and Blue Week". It was great to see all the campers get involved and work hard to earn points for their respective teams, The Blue Bombers, The White Lightenings and the Red Rockets.
"Get 'UP' with Cali-Camp" has proven to be a great theme for week three. The kids have found feathers that have been dropping off of Kevin the Tropical Bird when she tries to join in on their games and runs away instead. Our specialists worked hard to create memorable buttons for those outstanding campers in each area. The campers are wearing their Explorer Buttons proudly.
In addition to the Program specialist I am also the Inclusion Coordinator. As a special education teacher by trade I love to see kids with special needs be fully included in all activities. The kids with special needs are fully included and having a wonderful time. When I walk up to any and all program areas these kids are a part of the group and are not being singled out in any way. I feel honored to be working with such an amazing group of people that flawlessly encourage the inclusion of ALL kids.
So far my first year has been wonderful and I look forward to finishing out the summer strong.

Hello Parents and Campers! I am Sasha Santacruz and this is my first year here at Cali-Camp. My supervision groups are the Doves, Coyotes, Mustangs, Palominos, Swans and the Wolves. My experience so <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmjsl_hCykYwr7IWz0zU0cVAkbsz1jMAUXY3oTxYOEFMXYZdpMie-k1a0QQM6Q0LeoTLYNslNYB-co3Ec25fe-55wfN6BascjL8Lo-hKDWPyOp_DQflS4WwCFDHMortzJz7Sl7VxnPuRhW/s200/Wk3F_Sasha.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5492016306425040306" />far has been unbelievable. Getting to know the counselors, specialists and what better than the campers! Being able to see the campers drive the go-carts, ride the horses or hitting the bullseye at Target Sports has made this a delightful summer so for. The developing friendships between counselors and campers shows as the counselors welcome their campers with exhuberant smiles and a warm "Good Morning."
The weekly themes have been a success. We just wrapped up "Get 'Up' with Cali-Camp." Our theme was based on the movie "UP." The campers had the opportunity to earn badges at each specialty area. Each camper would wear a sash that proudly displayed their hard earned badges.
Overall, I have seen smiles, heard laughter and that to me is the Cali-Camp Experience!

Hi parents and Cali-Campers. My name is Justin -, the Jr. Staff Director here at Cali-Camp. I am back for my 7th summer and so far having a great time. All of the Jr. Staff members are doing a great job this summer. They are just as happy as I am with how the summer is going. We are having a great time playing games and <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4qnF82pb2bVafADNcP2EtqRyy4JT-4YjmCO_VhL3PaZK2isiVahAnPBiK19IFxyjT3qmrXdGHZ3_Qvjm8zt5LfXxKIfJBey74C1h8U1kdCJZQmuq8dQ_8_Dx1st3YrgpsBBt5mxGvQMqp/s200/Wk_2F+Basketball+Tournament124.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491976964887322690" />doing all of the fun activities with your children. Red, White and Blue week was a huge success full of cheers and competitions. We have some really fun themed weeks coming up and I hope to see your children there.

Cali-Camp Summer 2010 - Week 3 - Get "UP" with Cali-Camp

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuQ1XLUnff3NepFvfDqgJO9TZtLBCUPTjmfmfHDgKLdAl-RXt60URDhOgO_hu-KjDpEIuFXne532VtQVXujT7pNfvYpTkUtHbc_syx9JH3r-nZNZZAhDRcrjgW0-9GyZzlbONlGwhkOQW9/s400/Wk_3W+Wolves-Miniature+Golf21.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491646762130646882" />
Sometime last winter a remarkable movie came out which sparked so many ideas for a week at camp, thus Get "UP" with Cali-Camp was born. Starting back at staff training all of the Specialists spent time designing their "Specialty Explorer Badges" that have been a big hit. Each time a group attends a Specialty Area the Specialist chooses one camper at the end of the period to receive the Explorer Badge. Once a camper received an Explorer Badge they could make a sash to display it. Campers wear their sashes throughout the day and the counselors collect them at the end of the day. On the campers last day they can take their sash home with all of the badges they received during the week.

On Monday campers made "Adventure Journals" to keep track of their Cali-Camp memories, which will also go home with campers on their last day. Campers also got their first glimpse of the Wanted Posters of Kevin, the tropical bird who likes chocolate and loses lots of feathers. The hunt for Kevin has brought many funny stories along with "Fred the Flamingo" showing up from Bus 11 with feathers, trying to be Kevin. The Grizzlies have been especially diligent and have been hot on Kevin's trail.

Wednesday we explored "All things that fly" with helicopters, crossword puzzles and paper airplanes.

Thursday, Wilderness Explorer Day found the camp overflowing with green balloons and green popsicle sticks. Campers had all day to search for as many popsicle sticks and balloons they could find and during the last period groups tried to create something (like a house)out of the sticks and balloons that flies. Specialists of the Week were awarded all day and pictures at snack time which are posted on the bulletin board in the back of the lunch area each week.

Friday, the culminating day began with Camper of the Week, a day full of searching and ended with the Cardinals finding "KEVIN" hiding down in the creek in a black trash bag.

Week 9 - Farewell Week

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWkxsoXs7aixch1V9Mo7_2LLO2vGIoUzSE0VYsLaYjkL3HMNDzFDY2xrMyPCI6twIuLvhOPyduZqQsdSs5AI1LczqwDkqbDeT9LIjt0055rsJaJryzS-QSOVulwMRuCKtoYhAcNs6Wh2MB/s400/Wk9_Last+Day+of+Camp+-+Awards+end+of+day+008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376570494357436770" />
The last week of camp for 2009… My how the time flew by. The week started with a little bit of politics, Cali-Camp style. Two campers from each group were given the opportunity to run for Director’s for the Day on Wednesday. They worked with their counselors to put together speeches which were delivered at lunch to the whole camp. Then they campaigned all afternoon and the entire camp voted at snack time. The Cardinals, Elle Solovy and Lili Sheen won by an overwhelming margin. Their screams and the screams of their fellow Cardinals filled the air with excitement and we all looked forward to Wednesday when they would run the camp! Whoopee a day off for the real Directors! Elle and Lili had some work to do because they promised the campers a talent show on Wednesday. They made a signup sheet and a suggestion box.

Wednesday morning, Backwards Day, Switch-a-Roo came with Elle and Lili putting on Pam’s “Red Shirts”. They looked like they were wearing “Red Dresses”. The day started a bit confusing, but they got into it quickly. We started with snack time and popsicles were served. The campers thought this was great! Elle and Lili then told all of the counselors to be junior counselors and the junior counselors to become the counselors for the day and 6th period began. They had fun with the microphone and kind of enjoyed the power they felt when they asked the campers to quiet down and they did! The day ran backwards with lunch, as usual, in the middle. The only thing unusual was the fact that Elle and Lili had the Talent Show planned and many, many campers and staff signed up. It was so fun. We took videos of all of the talent and loaded them onto utube. Check them out. They had so many acts that we had to hold a few to the end of the day, which ended with “Circle Time”. The Girl’s did a fabulous job and got the annual “soaking” to end their day. I think we have some super future staff members here with Elle and Lili. Thanks for a job well done girls!

On Thursday we held our annual “Camp wide Free Choice Activity” Day. Campers were given the opportunity to go to every activity in camp throughout the day. They got to choose their favorite activities and even got in an hour of swimming. Taylor, one of our counselors, had the camera all day and took hundreds of pictures of all of the activities. Photos were added to both our Cali-Camp Facebook Group Page and Flickr.

Thursday also brought our Staff Appreciation Day in which we had a special lunch and long staff break for all of the staff and ended with our staff awards. Staff members of the year, both Senior and Junior, were nominated and voted by the entire staff. Lauren Tyni – Palominos Counselor / Driver and Calvin Cristales – Wolves Counselor and Bus Counselor received Sr. Staff Member of the Year. Junior Staff Members of the Year were Kathy Herrera and Jordan Diamond-Fuller. The Transportation Department choose two very deserving staff members – Luciana Duren – Driver of the Year and Caitlin Hoey-Klick as Bus Counselor of the Year for the great job they both did in Transportation all summer. Our Administrative Team chooses the Director’s Award each year and this year we awarded Director’s Award to Jesse Behr – Coyotes Counselor and Rachel Bereny – Cardinals Counselor. We had 16 Five Year Staff Members who received a plaque for their dedicated service to Cali-Camp. We are very proud of all of our staff for they gave 110% to their campers this summer.

Friday, the last day of camp, Farewell Day brought Camper Awards throughout the day. Each Specialist in camp chooses a boy and a girl to receive Specialist of the Year in their Activity Area from the campers who received Specialist of the Week. Many parents came to see their children receive the awards and we videoed the speeches (will soon be posted on utube, as they are large files and we are working on getting them condensed).

The following 2009 Camper Awards were presented at Morning Round-up:

Creative Dramatics: Raleigh DeGraw – Eagles Elle Solovy – Cardinals
Tennis: Ethan Farrelly – Raccoons Jordan Cleary – Fawns
Gymnastics: Ronny Tal – Ravens Etta Friedman – Cardinals
Adventure: Christopher Ferrarin–Grizzlies Salma Cruz – Cardinals
Golf: Max Levy – Grizzlies Alegra Callas – Mustangs

The following Awards were presented at Lunch:

Nature: Teddy Silverman – Roadrunners Kyra Philipp – Doves
Backyard Games &
Sports: Taylor Randerson – Wolves Allegra Fuller – Doves
Target Sports: Nicholas Smergian – Coyotes Alyssa Jaffe – Fawns
Arts & Crafts: Zeke Shapiro – Wolves Isabella Doolin – Bunnies
Motorized: Charles Kleinman – Eagles Gina Levine – Cardinals

And at Snacks at the end of the day:

Swimming: Luc Fabre – Ravens Jennifer Moraly – Bunnies
Wrangler: Nico James Cheyenne Bell

Campers of the Year: Benjamin Fuller – Ravens Danielle Posin – Doves

Junior Camper
of the Year: Luke James – Ducklings Ella Goldberg – Ducklings

Congratulations to all of the Award Recipients of 2009. This was a fantastic summer and you campers all helped make it so! We hope to see you all again next summer.

The end of the final day was filled with tears and promises of re-kindled friendships in the future. Pictures were taken and the staff sang our final good-bye song to the campers. We look forward to next year when we can see you all again.

Yours for quality camping, until next summer,

Pam Hawley - Director

Week 8 - Summer Olympics

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZncdoMkp2R0oKouFOp8R6Z0UQ8ZUeW0J3qbYDBWvmXtBiiN6uowjb2CKQI8Rjo6Ka3ja3DjsRAhvz3yqipelQ_nMxRhB0vHd677Icy7mLLt-34snf4vT7YvsK8Dk52ZuvCXyJrO8ZjcgG/s320/Wk8_Olympic+Ceremony+003.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5370217237443488178" />
Olympic Week started off in Great Cali-Camp fashion with groups picking countries to represent all week in the “Summer Olympics”. In Division A – Cubs of Greece, Bunnies of Jamaica and Raccoons of Italy, Division B – Butterflies of Russia, Chipmunks of Poland, Wolves of Spain and the Palominos of Finland, Division C – Swans of Brazil, Ravens of South Korea, Doves of Mexico, Coyotes of Dominican Republic, Roadrunners of Chad and Division D – Fawns of New Zealand, Cardinals of Australia, Grizzlies of Djibouti, Eagles of Ireland and Israel and the Mustangs of England.

Groups made Flags of their Countries and we had our Opening Ceremonies with the procession of the Flags and the Olympic Torch Relay. Lots of pictures were taken and posted on Flickr and Facebook.

Tuesday was Olympic Track Events with the 50 yard dash and Team Baton Relays. Wednesday was Field Events – Shot Put (Softball) and Discus (Frisbee) events. Thursday was Swimming Relays and Races and Friday was the Olympic Trampoline Meet. Each day 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons were presented at snack time and Participation Ribbons for each camper who participated. We awarded points: 1st place – 3 points, 2nd place – 2 points and 3rd place – 1 point. Throughout the week we added up the scores. Division A – Cubs of Greece were 1st place, Division B – Palominos of Finland were 1st place, Division C – Doves of Mexico were 1st place and Division D – Eagles of Ireland were 1st place. We cheered each other and celebrated the Friendly, Fun Competition. We all wished that the world, as we know it, could do the same!

The staff spent a couple of days nominating and voting on Campers of the Year and the Specialists picked their Specialists of the Year. All names have gone off to the Trophy Shop for engraving and parents will be called early this week to come and see their children win prestigious awards. Each child who wins gets an engraved placque to take home and their name goes on a perpetual placque that stays at camp forever.

The Week ended with our last Co-ed Overnight. Once again campers enjoyed themselves at Freetime for 2 hours on Friday. For dinner we had Lasagne, plain pasta, salad, garlic bread and churros for desert. The swim party cleaned everyone from the long day at camp and then they were off to the campfire where the skits were Funny and everyone participated. Hot chocolate and homemade cookies ended the night and everyone got plenty of sleep, except the staff of course.

We are all looking forward to Farewell Week with Camper Directors for a Day, Backwards Day, Camper Free-Choice and Camper Farewell with Awards on Friday. We have room if you would like to add a few days next week. Since the first book of Harry Potter we have enjoyed Cali-Camp Returns to Hogwarts. The enthusiasm for everything Hogwarts continues to this day. The week began with Professor McGonagall placing each counselor under the sorting hat to see which House of Hogwarts their group will be in all week. Would it be Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw or Slytherin. The children were good sports and represented their House with vim and vigor.

Friendly, Fun Competition for the House Cup took place all week with Houses challenging Houses for House Points. Whether it was a group House camper challenging another group House camper to a game of foosball to a whole group challenging another group to a game of Capture the Flag the points kept coming. Houses colored flags, cheered, sang and competed for the House Cup on Friday. On Tuesday each House came up with a cheer for their House and performed for points and honor. The cheers will be seen on utube soon. They were just a bit long and have to be condensed.

Quidditch matches began on Tuesday which were set up by divisions, 4 to be exact. Backyard Games and Sports also taught Quiddtich all week so if their group was eliminated from the Tournament they still had a chance to play. The field was set up all week for groups to challenge other groups in Quidditch.

There was lots of dress up all week with different characters from Hogwarts showing up like Luna Lovegood, lots of Harry’s, Ron’s and Hermoine’s, Prefects, Golden Snitches, Hagrids, Bellatrix LeStranges and Dumbledores. Houses got points for the most dressed up campers.

Bertie Botts Every Flavor Bean Scavenger Hunt was a huge success with golden beans counting for more points. The winning group was the Swans with over 8,000 bean points. Everywhere you looked you would see Team Leaders putting beans all over camp all day.

On Thursday the Finals of the Quidditch Matches came down to the Eagles winning for Slytherin and the Eagles challenging the staff to a match on Friday morning. The whole camp showed up and cheered the Eagles, but they were no match for the staff team with Jack as Keeper! It was brothers against brothers. Charles K. did a great job as Keeper for the campers and blocked many shots with his broom. Raleigh the Eagle and Dan the counselor were seekers and almost caught the golden snitch many times.

Friday, Leonardo the Amazing dazzled the campers with his Magic Show and the day ended with the House that was in first place all week – Hufflepuff winning. Everyone cheered, Hufflepuff did their cheer once more and another wonderful season at Hogwarts came to an end. What a successful week it was.

Week 6 - Come to the Carnival

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg54R9SGgFoGMMeIte0nepjaq2YpTk9x3DzI7TBilqY9vMtU1ICWtWtHvlelZSoRSVLZ0KAj2uv8NUqQS6QJZa4MT5HLrhUBrB0c6bpCWbWRrKeKq7d2RaPMAteJdQ088yXONCcBm2m8wMc/s320/Cubs_faces.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5365018678997136290" />
One of the longest running traditions at Cali-Camp has been “Carnival Week” In the 80’s Carnival Week was the most amazing event where every camper’s parents would come up to the Carnival and parking was the biggest part of the day with parents parking everywhere – in the horse arenas, on the playfield, the go-cart tracks, the parking lot, the playground and all over the street outside camp. Many Junior counselors used to dread that day as they had to move all of the tires from the go-cart tracks. Over the years, many things have changed about Carnival Day. We still have our alumni who come to visit, but now they bring their kids and reminisce about their days as camp counselors and how those days in their lives were the absolute best days of their lives. Many of our alumni were also campers forever and will be in our hearts and the history of Cali-Camp. We love you all!

Carnival Week started out with everyone beginning their booth choices and booth banners. There were groups which had to plan together, groups which had to build together, groups which created their special outfits together, groups which brought their specialty into their booth, such as Wrangler Camp with their lasso a horse and Sports Camp with their Basketball toss!

It was interesting to see the counselors and their groups working together this week for a common goal. The campers took pride in their booths and even worked the booth, on a schedule, to make sure that all of the campers had a fun time at their booth.

Carnival Face Painting was a big hit with many groups, such as the Cubs and Swans, whose counselors +go out of their way to get involved in camp with their campers. Check out their faces on Facebook and Flickr. Check out links to the right of this blog!

This Week at Backyard Games and Sports, our specialist Lauren taught “Capture the Flag”, which helps groups work together, plan strategies and accept their fate when they are caught by the opposing teams. The Carnival with all of its aspects, taught many of the same concepts through different means. Life skills are so much fun to teach and in a camp setting campers really get it. So many things relate back to life that we do in camp. We never miss a chance to point this out to both our campers and or staff.

So the week builds….. Campers get excited… Staff members make sure all of the little details of their booths are taken care of, our program team leader KC coordinates supplies and equipment… And in spite of everything… Carnival happens and is it’s never-ending success. We will have a Carnival Video on utube.com next week. Pictures on Flickr and Cali-Camp Summer Day Camp Facebook Group page.

The Carnival ends and the Overnight begins! This overnight was Co-ed, both boys and girls. We had one of our alumni whose children go to camp come to the overnight and stay all night. It brought back many memories for her and new memories were made for all of them. The campers had a great time, especially at the campfire with everyone in skits. We are sending the videos to our specialist to post on utube next week.

Next week is one of Cali-Camp’s favorites – Cali-Camp Returns to Hogwarts. The campers loved it so this year we expanded it into an entire week and “What a Week it has been!”

The Camp was divided into 4 divisions so the competition would be fair for all. Each day the Groups would pick campers to participate so lots of children would participate by the end of the week. The Friendly / Fun Competition Week began with the Obstacle Course Races and Relays on Tuesday. Eight Campers were able to compete and represent their group, 1 on each leg of the race.

Here is how the race went: Time starts: # Run from start to the Junior Camp Play Structure and go through the maze (we will show you the course, then run out the gate and tag # Ride the tricycle around the white rail fence circle of the lawn around behind the Cantina and tag # Hit the hockey puck through the cones to the top of the stars and tag # Go down the stairs, across the bridge, down the stairs turn right and go under the bridge into the creek and look for a Gold painted rock. The Gold Rock must make it across the finish line. Run back up go across the bridge and back up to the main area and hand gold rock to and tag # Skip a jump rope around the white rail fence and tag # Hit the croquette ball through the hoops and hand gold rock to and tag # Get into your potatoe sack and hop across the lawn and give gold rock to and tag #8  Hula hoop for 10 seconds and go up the stairs to the Finish Line with the gold rock!. Time Stops! Phew, it is tiring just reading it isn’t it? View pictures on Flickr or Facebook and videos on utube.

Wednesday was Group Pool Race Challenges. 4 Campers from each group competed. Camper #1 started at the top of the slide, Time starts: Slide down, swim under the rope and tag camper #2, swim to the middle of the pool and dive down to get a ring off of the bottom. Swim to the other side of the pool and tag camper #3 who had to make a basket. After making the basket Camper #3 tagged camper #4 who had to get on an inner tube and swim or kick to the opposite side of the pool. It was fun to watch and participate.

Thursday older groups participated at the Ropes Course and the younger groups at the Group Challenge in climbing activities. 3 campers from each group represented their group in the competition.

Friday was the Campwide Finale which gave each group clues which led them all over the entire camp, somewhat like a scavenger hunt. It was like taking a “power-walk” and everyone had to stay together as a group. There were some close moments when 2 groups came back to the lunch area at the same time. At snack time the winners of each division were awarded an Amazing Race Challenge Certificate and a special snack.

Jeff, our video guru took some fun videos of the week and we will be uploading them to utube for your viewing pleasure.

Of course we presented our Specialists of the Week and Campers of the Week, pictures galore.

Next week is one of Cali-Camp’s classics: “Come to the Carnival”. Groups pick their theme for their booths, make banners and plan the games, Face Painting and the Carnival on Friday with booths, Games and Prizes for all! Here’s how it goes: Each group in camp has 2 days, Monday and Tuesday to set their group’s “Wacky” record. For the rest of the week we put 1 record from each group up on the backboard and each group in camp can try to break the records set back on Monday and Tuesday.

We started the week with lots of new campers joining us. Time was spent at Circle Time introducing them to the group, assigning them a buddy for the day and making sure they get their orientation both in the group and at all of the areas of camp. We started with a counselor Task, which we continued each morning before Circle Time. The counselors set the first record – 103 consecutive beach ball hits. We’ll see what the record will be by the end of the week.

By Wednesday each group had set at least 1 record to enter into the Wacky Record:

Group, Official Record, Record
Cubs, Simon Says, 11 minutes
Bunnies, Jumping Jacks, 32 min. 9 sec.
Raccoons, Spinning in Circles, 6 min 35 sec
Butterflies, Handball bounces,1100
Chipmunks, Hula Hoop,46 min. 2 sec.
Wolves,Ping Pong bounces, 75
Swans, Somersaults per minute, 46
Ravens, Pushups, 52
Coyotes,Beach ball Rally,68
Doves, Swivel Hips on the Trampoline, 9
Fawns, Balance arrow on finger, 3 min. 8 sec.
Cardinals, Tennis ball bounces on racket, 452
Grizzlies, Caterpillar at Adventure – Ropes Course,45 sec.
Eagles, Ping pong Rally,230
Roadrunners, Basketball passes in 30 seconds,34
Palominos, Seat drops in one minute, 62
Mustangs,How many words can be made from a sentence, 108

On Wednesday, we divided the camp into 2 Divisions: Ages 5 to 8 and Ages 9 to 13 and set out to begin breaking records. Every group got into it and words of encouragement and cheering were heard coming from campers and staff alike. Our “Wacky / Tacky” Dress-up was a huge success and a FUN time was had by all who participated. Groups worked together to support the efforts of individual campers and lots of pictures and videos were taken. Check them out on Flickr and utube!

Thursday was Specialist of the Week with awards going to many campers who were really putting forth great effort and perseverance in the tasks at hand, whether it is consecutive Tennis ball bounces, the Caterpillar climb at Adventure or Swivel Hips on the Trampoline.

Friday’s, Campers of the Week were happy at Circle Time. The Bus Cup Challenge winners were ecstatic at lunch. At Snack Time we announced the Winners of the Final Wacky Records. Campers went home with certificates and their name went into our Wacky Record Book, to be brought out the next time we bring back Wacky Book of Records Week.

The whole week was building up with excitement to the Boy’s only overnight! The boys are looking forward to 2 hours of free-time with Horseback riding, Go-Carts, Target Sports, Rock climbing and a variety of other areas open for free choice. After free-time is the “all you can eat” Pizza party followed by a swim party, skit planning and campfire. The campfire is a real highlight of the evening with funny skits in which each camper will participate in and silly stories. Bedtime snack of Martha’s homemade cookies and hot chocolate is the perfect ending to a great day. Bedtime will be on the main camp lawn outside the lower offices with all night supervision. Older campers are allowed to stay up and play in the “Tackier Town” and Game Room for awhile longer than the younger children.

In the morning our fabulous cook Martha will be back for breakfast, followed by more free-time. In the morning we open up one of the camper’s favorites – Bamboo Forest! Snack-time and Lost and Found bring the overnight to an end. Camper’s get on their buses and pull out of the parking lot at 10:00AM and will be home to their drop-off points promptly. We promise they will come home tired, hopefully with all of their overnight gear, full of funny stories from the campfire and SMILEING!

Week 4 is next – “Sail the Silly Seas”: A fun-filled week of Water Games, Races and Relays. On Gilligan’s Island Day the Staff and Team Leaders Dress up as Characters from Gilligan’s Island. Camper’s can too if you would like to join in with the festivities. Thursday is “Pirate Day” with Treasure Hunts and a Gold Doubloons Contest. On Friday we culminate the week with “Back to the Beach” with Beach Dress-up, Beach Games an all camp Surfer Dance and the Girl’s ONLY Overnight!

Week 2 – “We Love a Parade”

<link rel="File-List" We took some pictures (up on Flickr) and a Video of the entire parade which we will upload on Monday.

Next Week is Wacky Book of Records where campers from each group will try to establish "Wacky" Records Monday and Tuesday and then everyone spends Wednesday, Thursday and Friday trying to beat their records. The last time we had this week was in 2001, so we have some of the records from that year to try to break too! It should be Fun. The week culminates with the Boy's Only Overnight on Friday (July 10th) and the Girl's will follow on the next Friday (July 17th).

Week 1 - Share the "Cali-Camp Spirit"

What a wonderful week this has been for the campers and staff of Cali-Camp Summer Day Camp. It is so exciting for me, this being my 34th year at Cali-Camp, to see all the hard work of so many caring individuals come to fruition. A week or so ago we were all wondering if this thing called “Camp” would ever start. The anxiety for all, both campers and staff, was high, campers wondering if they will fit in with the other campers; counselors wondering if the campers will like them; directors wondering if all the staff will perform up to our expectations. I can proudly say “What a pleasure this week has been!” There is “Cali-Camp Spirit” throughout all of camp; children meeting and cultivating new friendships; staff members showing their “Super Staff” Skills everywhere and an overall feeling of accomplishment and pride in what we do.

The week started with all of the buses arriving on time and then morning introductions with camp favorite songs. The Junior Counselors sang “When you’re happy and you know it!” and the Senior Staff sang “The Cali-Camp Spirit” and we even video taped it and put it up on “utube”. First thing, we introduced all campers to their counselors and got them into “Circle Time” doing their orientations, playing name games and they were off to “play camp”.

This has been a week for campers to build group unity and learn all about each other. On Tuesday and Wednesday Groups made Group Banners which we displayed on the tree house and they created their Group Cheers and performed them on stage (pictures in Flickr). Wednesday was Crazy Hair Day and we had great participation from campers and staff as you can see in the pictures that were taken. It is really important for campers to participate in the camp special event activities, both for their level and quality of camp experience. If there is a dress-up day in a week help your child think about what they could do for their costume. You don’t have to go out and buy anything, make something up. Next Friday we are going to add Red/White and Blue Dress-up to our calendar for our 4th of July Parade and Celebration, so all they have to do is wear the colors, red/white/blue ribbons, hair, face paint, shoelaces, whatever you can find around the house.

We have many children with special needs at Cali-Camp who are being mainstreamed into the groups. One amazing, young autistic girl has been at our camp for a number of years and she has flourished. She has an aide who works with her to help with socialization and transitions. On Tuesday, the aide had something to do and couldn’t be at camp with the camper so the camper’s Mom came to be her aide. She went through the entire day with the group and later made a call to tell me how wonderful this experience is for her child. She was so thrilled that the campers in the group were so nice to her daughter and would encourage her and helped her learn to play a game. She said that in all the years that her daughter had been at Cali-Camp she has been happy, but these two counselors were the most remarkable yet. She said that they were spirited, caring, loving and were able to motivate all of the different personalities to participate in the activities by participating with vigor and energy themselves. It made me quite proud. I then shared her comments with our staff members. It made our day. The motto at Cali-Camp is “Catch them doing something right!” and guess what, those counselors went back to their group, knowing that they are making a difference in the lives of their campers and did an even better job the rest of the day. I am certain that they will have one of the best summers of their lives (and they have both been at camp for 8 years as staff members).

Thursday our Specialists in camp chose their Specialists of the Week to receive awards on stage. We give them all a huge Cali-Camp Cheer and take their picture for the bulletin board in the back of the lunch area (pictures will also be loaded into Flickr). Campers who receive Specialist of the Week are eligible, at the end of the summer, to be chosen as Specialists of the Year. On the last day of camp they are honored with a permanent placque and their names placed on our perpetual placques', etched in Cali-Camp history.

Today is Friday, Camper of the Week. Each group’s counselors choose 1 to 2 campers to receive Camper of the Week. We rotate from Friday to Thursday next week. They get awarded Camper of the Week within their group at Circle Time and at snack time today we take pictures for the bulletin board (pictures in Flickr). Children chosen as Camper of the Week throughout the summer are also eligible for the honor of Camper of the Year.

All in all, this first week has been one of our best ever, thanks to the responsible staff and campers who have shown their never-ending “Cali-Camp Spirit”. Until next Week… Join us for “We Love a Parade.” Check out our Special Events Calendar at http://www.calicamp.com/forms/Special%20Events%20Calendar.pdf

Pam

Pam Hawley – Cali-Camp Director

The Most Bang For Your Buck

As an owner and staff member of Cali- Camp for over 40 years; as a parent and grandparent; and as a psychotherapist; I find new meaning in the words - “Keep within one’s compass and cut one’s coat according to one’s cloth”.

I think, unlike years in the past, when the economy has been soft and parents have still managed to send their children to the high-end camps, this year presents a new challenge. The question many parents are asking is, “Where can I find the best camp experience for my child at the least cost?”

It may be that parents are very reluctant to pull any money from the budget they have set for their children’s summer learning experiences. They will, in many cases, sacrifice their own needs and vacations, so that their children can enjoy an enriched summer experience at camp. However, I do believe parents are considering their financial situations in a very serious manner. I also believe that most parents make their financial decisions with a serious commitment to the total value of their child’s summer camp experience. And so they face the dilemma, “Where and how do I get the most for my dollar without compromising the quality of the camp experience”?

There are many reasons why we send our children to a particular camp. We hope:

• That the camp we choose provides a community and environment in which our children can expand their skills and thrive.
• Our children, while attending camp, will make new friends by interacting with other children of different backgrounds and interests. Thus, they can expand their own vistas.
• Our children will learn independence and interdependence in the camp environment.
• Our children will learn to compete sensibly and with compassion and humility in the camp setting.
• That our children will build self-esteem and confidence.
• For confirmation that our children will be in a camp setting that is safe and comforting.
• They are able to enjoy their camp experience in a place where the beauty of nature is apparent, soothing and at always at their fingertips.

If we do not sponsor the magical experience of camp for our children because we feel we cannot afford the cost of camp then we might hire a sitter at $10 an hour for an 8 ½ hour day. That amounts to $85 a day at the very least. When one compares the cost of a sitter for 8 ½ hours to the cost of day camp for the same time we begin to appreciate the fact that camp is a very well priced service even at $100 a day. We begin to appreciate that camp is a true bargain.

When you evaluate the cost of camp per day and add to that the offerings of an on site camp, that maintains a trained staff which returns year after year because they love children and the awesome experience of seeing a child’s eyes open in awe at our environment. Once again we see that camp is really a bargain.

Add to that experience, hot meals, a nurse on the premises, an owner/director that has an investment in every child’s positive camp experience, transportation to and from camp, an expert who assures that the drivers of the vehicles are certified and the vehicles themselves are as safe as can be, an opportunity to schedule flexibility into your enrollment; and many other extras such as a camp site that doesn’t move each day, but instead provides continuity and familiarity.

From the aforementioned paragraphs, one can easily come to the conclusion that there is a correlation between what you spend and the quality of the camp that you select.

Just like any other business owner we want our camp (which is a business) to run in a cost efficient manner. We want our groups to be full and still give each camper a maximum camp experience.

Don’t be afraid to ask for a discounted rate. Special arrangements can be made for payment of camp tuition. As we near the opening of camp and especially in this economic environment we will work with you to give your child the best possible summer experience. We do not want to turn away a single camper because they can not afford our camp. We want you to use our flexible scheduling program to ease your way into your child’s camp budget.

I hope you have a very good summer and look forward seeing you and your child at Cali-Camp on our most incredible natural environment under the guidance of our most incredible staff.

Yours for quality day camping,

Sue Rowen
Owner

The Power of Camp! - Keeps em’ Coming Back

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 218px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFouJU8tj44c5elormRXMyvy96yuRkC1Eg2B_KAiDTTQmETgbnM5EKX-H-qYYpdA7aSxXqRmGZJRJoSs4Oav04HnS2oHmNx3Cvh1dToefT5Y4cf_tuNad_Q9w-b6outK2fxQoNLjJ5Mkjk/s320/Super_gals.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5341318865584046706" />
Over the past 34 years I’ve spent at Cali-Camp I have seen campers grow up, go through our camp program, become junior staff, staff members and am even spending time getting to know second generation campers, their children. It is very exciting to me to be able to talk to a child about how I knew their mother when she went to camp. They get a kick out of some of the stories. I would like to share a few stories with you about what keeps em’ coming back – The Power of Camp!

First of all, let’s go back to the late 70’s, early 80’s and meet Evelyn and Jamie. They started together at camp when they were Ducklings (probably age 4/5). One of them lived in the valley and one lived in the city, so they didn’t see too much of each other throughout the school year. Come the first day of camp they would be looking for each other, run into each other’s arms and were steadfast friends till the last day of camp when they would cry and promise to see each other next year. Thinking back to those times brings a big smile to my face. As they grew, they grew closer and created many memories together. One, which makes me laugh, happened at the pool when they were about 8 years old (plus or minus a year or so). They were holding hands and singing a little song they made up entitled “We’re Jews in Space” then they would jump up and twirl as they went into the water. Each time they would come up laughing and do it all over again. They both had infectious laughs and had many friends that went through camp with them too like Andrea and Devrha. (Picture from left to right – Devrha, Mindy (used to be their counselor), Jamie, Evelyn and Andrea. Jamie and Evelyn, Andrea and Devrha all grew up and became volunteer junior counselors, then counselors and when they all graduated from college and had to go get “real jobs” they somewhat lost contact with each other for while, but…

Just recently Cali-Camp celebrated our 50th Anniversary and they all came. It was like old home week with all of them hugging and sharing stories and memories about their childhood at camp and how much they missed each other over the years. It was as if they had just seen each other the week before, the comfortable feelings flowed back and they all re-connected. We decided to begin an alumni group on Facebook that now has 250 members. Campers from the past, who became staff members galore all sharing the fun times and memories they had together has been rewarding. The pictures they have shared have brought back even more memories with everyone commenting and sharing their take on what happened when they were there. We are even having a get together in a couple of weeks with people flying in from as far as North Carolina and Las Vegas. Camp has totally touched all of our lives and the lives of the campers who have come through our gates for the past 54 years.

Many of our alumni and friends in camping have written blurbs about why they kept coming back to camp. Here are a few:

“The Power of Camp is really the power of leadership, being a good sport, experience, self-sufficiency and memories. I have been fortunate over the years to travel the world, to participate in thriving businesses and charitable works, to be a Captain in the United States Army, and to be surrounded by loving family and friends. But I can say without hesitation that my fourteen years experience as a camper and counselor have had as profound an influence on my life as any others, and resulted in memories that are as vivid as if they happened yesterday. Thank you, Summer Camp. And thanks, Mom and Dad.” ~ Henry M. Skier, President AMSkier

Because of Camp...
1. I made soooo many fabulous friends from all over the world that have been long lasting and true; friends who have shaped my life and my direction.
2. I have shared difficult experiences with others that have helped shape my core values and character.
3. I learned and practiced valuable leadership skills in a safe and forgiving environment and was able to transfer those skills into my personal and professional life.
4. I learned compassion through helping children learn and grow up to be productive, confidant adults.
5. I was a much better teacher; knowing that children learn differently; knowing that children need to experience things and have FUN doing it.
6. I learned about the democratic process; the value and power of volunteerism and organizations.
7. I learned to value and appreciate the out-of-doors and man's impact upon it.
8. I learned teamwork and the power of working together.
9. I learned to trust.
10. "I yam what I yam" ~ Pam Hawley – Cali-Camp Director

“I came back to camp each summer I could, a total of five. The simple camp fun, joy of seeing old friends and the excitement of giving kids the best summer of their lives was always my motivator! I created lifelong friendships from those few weeks a year. Longtime friends, numerous weddings and entire families created from the endearing relationships that camp helped foster. Cali-Camp was one of the best times of my life.” ~Donna

“What kept me coming back summer after summer were the friendships that were built. Each year I looked forward to seeing everyone I became friends with the summer before. To this day, from age 11 (I will admit it...I am 40 now), I am still friends with Angela and Tammy Mandel. Two people that lived 45min.away from me, who I only saw in the summer until I could drive, still to this day remain my closest and dearest friends. They are family to me, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Cali-Camp played a huge part in the person I am today. I also gained a great work ethic that steams from working at Cali-Camp. I don't think you see much of that anymore. Maybe EVERYONE should have to work at Cali-Camp! A huge THANK-YOU, to everyone that touched my life at Cali-Camp!”
~Nikki

“It's simple really. There's something about being a camper that's unlike being a student, or teammate, or employee. It's the privilege to play, to explore, to laugh, and to dance beneath the sun. Camp memories are special memories, memories that a tight knit group of people share together. So why keep coming back? I think it's to keep those memories going, forever. “ ~Tanya

“A Camper sees the camp through their own eyes, A Counselor sees the camp through the Childs' eyes, A Cali Camp Alumni can't wait for their own child see the camp through their own eyes....And when that happens, the circle is ready to go round again. Warm friends, warm hearts, warm memories....that is CALI CAMP” ~Jill

“What can I say about Cali-Camp? Other than IT ROCKS!! I'm sure you've heard this from every other alumni listed, but I've made true lifetime friends from camp! I can't imagine my life without it. Seriously! I have yet to have another experience like it. The memories that will stay with me forever are the best! I can't thank you enough!” ~Jen

"It was and IS my extended family. I gained more self-confidence every year I would come back. I met some of my closest friends there. I have MANY happy memories and hope my children have the same positive experiences and memories, if not more!" ~Amy
"Cali camp kept me coming back for so many years because of everything it offered. I got to enjoy time with children while at the same time helping them learn to have fun. In addition, with so many jobs in keeping you trapped behind a desk, Cali-Camp offered just the opposite. I was able to enjoy the great outdoors while helping kids to smile. That alone kept me coming back." ~Kyle

Written by Pam Hawley- Cali-Camp Director 5/29/09

Off To Summer Camp We Go!

How can you as parents insure a positive experience for your child in summer camp? This article is written in order to guide parents through some of the adjustment problems that both parents and children often experience before or at the beginning of their first summer camp experience.

As a licensed marriage, family and child therapist and also co-owner of Cali-Camp Summer Day Camp, it is my hope that the following ideas and information may help you to give your child the gift of an incredible summer at camp.

The camp experience, above all else, needs to provide your youngster with a safe physical and emotional environment. This safe place should also provide lots of interaction with other children and adult staff. These conditions allow your child to acquire social skills and to engage in activities that develop a sense of mastery over one's surroundings---one of our most important developmental tasks. Assuming that all of these criteria are met then, "having fun" is the operative phrase.

There are, of course, some variables that can influence a positive adjustment to camp. One of the most important factors is "separation anxiety" in either child or parent---and usually both.

Separation anxiety occurs in most children. It is developmentally appropriate from ages one to four, and manifests itself differently at each age. How a child resolves the issues around separation from parents is greatly influenced by the way in which the parents handle their own levels of anxiety about the camp experience and facing new situations.

It is normal for a child to feel some anxious moments before camp begins; it is even appropriate during the first couple of weeks. It is also appropriate for parents to be concerned about their child's adjustment to camp. However, be ever so mindful that your "worry mode", although often disguised and suppressed, is very apparent to your child. Their antennae are always up, and worry is very contagious.

For example, if a child repeatedly hears concerns of the parents about the bus ride, or sunburn, or his need to be with someone he knows, or negative messages about a parent's camp experience, this child will most certainly develop anxiety about going to camp.

As a therapist my message is: Be a concerned parent, but direct your concerns to the camp staff. Talk to them about your fears. Make a tremendous effort not to share your anxieties with your child. If your child voices fears then it is most important to hear all their worries. And then reassure! Reassure! Reassure! Try to separate your fears and concerns from your child's.

A child's anxieties are present in many different ways. Some are much less obvious than others. Behaviors to notice are as follows: verbally or behaviorally expressed resistance to going to camp such as stalling in the morning; or not getting out of bed; or clearly stating, " I don't want to go"; tears; bedwetting; or regressed behavior; sadness or withdrawal: that is not joining the group; boredom; dislike for counselor; hostile behavior towards other campers; and in some cases making up negative stories about other campers.

What are some of your options when a member of your family, perhaps even you as a parent, is experiencing anxiety about camp? My first suggestion is to call the camp office and ask to speak to a senior staff member or therapist if available.

I recommend that you bring your child to the facility several times before camp begins so that he or she can become familiar with the environment and learn the locations of the bathrooms, group meeting area, lunch area and the various activity areas.

I also recommend that campers ages 3-5 enroll for three days per week for at least two weeks at the outset; then after assessing the child, add or drop days accordingly. Days may be added provided there is space in the group and the bus. Although your child goes to pre-school or kindergarten 5 days a week and has fully adjusted; camp is an entirely different experience. One of the major differences is the fatigue level, especially in the beginning days of enrollment.

Campgrounds are usually much larger than the local school. Covering longer distances between activities is tiring for small people with little legs and little feet. An exhausted child can become a very cranky and unhappy child. Although our program at camp is developed to accommodate the needs of children ages 3-14 we have found that when camp begins it requires a stamina adjustment for all ages, including staff!

We invite our parents to visit anytime, and you may stay with your child for part of the day if arranged with staff. If you are noting anxiety we recommend that you try to bring the child to camp and stay an hour or two, then leave and pick the child up at an agreed upon time (the time could be earlier than the normal camp dismissal). It is very important that you are not late. Be there early or at least on time. Children suffer extreme anxiety when left waiting for a parent to show up.

When you put your young child on a camp bus, if he or she has a favorite toy or item to share with his group, encourage your youngster to do just that.

If something unusual has occurred at home let your child's camp staff know. Children often act out family trauma even though they don’t relate problems verbally.

We insist on a minimum 5-day enrollment because our experience tells us that some children need a fair amount of time to adjust and thus insure a positive camp experience. We hope that you as parents follow through with this by encouraging participation for at least five days. We want your child to have a wonderful summer and we need your help to achieve our goal.

We feel there are many options to look at before withdrawing a child from camp. However, if all else fails and withdrawal is the only solution we encourage you to applaud your child's effort and we hope you let your youngster know that next year there will be another opportunity to meet the challenges of summer camp and the joy that comes with all the successes that a child experiences when his camp experience is a happy one!

Written for parents sending children to camp for the first time, by Susan Rowen, a MFC Therapist for more than 29 years, and co-owner of Cali-Camp Summer Day Camp.

The Summer Camp Experience is a Gift of Love - Choose Wisely!

It's 10:00 a.m. In my office sits my first client, Mrs. Hanley. She is very concerned about her son Kevin and describes the problem as follows: "Kevin can't sit still for a moment. He doesn't seem to enjoy any of the many activities he's involved in-he's always asking, 'What's next mom, I'm bored, what are we doing after this?'"
Mrs. Hanley seems to be frustrated and very unsure of what to do with Kevin. She explains to me, "We try to keep Kevin busy. He goes to school much of the day; he has soccer practice on Monday; on Wednesday he has a math tutor; on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons he takes Karate lessons; on Saturday he has his soccer game and on Sunday he goes to religious school. I try to leave Fridays open for free time or appointments such as doctor, dentist, etc. He never seems content with what he's doing at the moment. He is always on to the next thing. Now summer is around the corner and I can't imagine what I'll do with him for three months."
Does this discussion sound familiar? There are so many choices for children today; how do we make the best use of time? Isn't that a concern for all of us? Do we choose summer activities that provide academic enrichment? Do we select a variety of activities in weekly intervals or bimonthly intervals? Do we provide a camp experience that shuttles our child each day to a different activity, thereby promising a high interest level (but running the risk that our children may become spoon-fed passive receptors having "click on-click off" experiences)? What is the most valuable summer experience for a child in today's high-tech world? What factors should influence our choices for spending our children's time and our money?
As a therapist working in the field of stress management and anxiety reduction, it is my feeling that children who operate nine months of the year within the constraints of structured time for lessons, school, religion, academic assistance, team sports, and family time most certainly need to have a summer "fun" experience which ensures anxiety reduction and stress reduction. Children need to learn the value of "down time" and delayed gratification while building self-confidence and skills.
Perhaps we need to provide a way for children to cultivate their spiritual nature…a way for them to use all of their senses. Perhaps it is our responsibility to provide a summer experience, if we are able, in which our children become proactive in their environment, conservators of their rural places and participants in the discovery of science and nature-a hands-on experience with traditional values such as honesty, integrity, respect for others and teamwork. A setting that offers the chance to be an active participant in an environment endowed with flora and fauna provides children an opportunity to be in harmony with nature.
In our culture, the "busy" child is directly correlated with the "successful, productive" child. While we believe in the value of being producers we also believe there is an equal value in experiencing nature in a setting such as a day or resident camp that emphasizes traditional experiences such as hiking, fishing, arts and crafts, animal care and above all, the development of social skills and human relationships.
For a few months a year we need to expose our children to a stress-free, serene environment, with minimal high-tech input or trendy activities. The days spent at a camp should be as important as the days in school. Education comes to us in many forms; the continuity of the experience is an essential ingredient for success.
Many of us find ourselves spending hour upon hour on computers engaged in non-verbal conversations with people-interactions that lack texture, nuance, and, above all, personal contact. And our children model that behavior. We listen to books rather than read them, and the imagery required in reading gives way to auditory perceptions. And there, too, our children model us.
These conditions seem to be the question: "At what cost to our children's core values do we emphasize the importance of engaging their energy in "snap, crackle and pop" stimuli so that they may be high achievers-evolved academically, but lacking moral and ethical virtues and social conscience or skills.
Yes, there are many choices. Those of us involved on a daily basis with children in the camp setting hope that you as parents will choose an experience for your youngsters that will encourage the wonderful intangible feeling of mastery that comes from an accumulation of successes over time. We hope that you will help your child understand that camp provides a safe place for learning skills by taking small steps. Camp provides a supportive environment for your child to take risks that build courage, character, confidence, self-esteem and integrity.
Camp is a tradition, which began more than 100 years ago, but today more than ever before it functions as an arena with boundaries and structure, providing your child the opportunity for growth and development while having fun.

Written for Westside Life, by Susan Rowen, a MFC Therapist for more than 29 years, and co-owner of Cali-Camp Summer Day Camp.
