The following two courses will NOT be offered in 2009: MINE7053 - Sustainable Development in the Minerals Industry Context MINE7054 - Cleaner Production in the Minerals Industry The following course WILL be offered in semester 2 of 2009: LAWS7911 - Mining Environmental Regulation The first part of the course MINE7052 - Community Development for the Mining Industry, will be taught in intensive mode at the St Lucia campus in the week commencing Monday, Monday, 16 February 2009 which makes it unsuitable for any remote students who can not come to Brisbane during this time. An EPA/QRC Progressive Rehabilitation Training Workshop will be held on 24-25 August 2006 at the Stamford Plaza in Brisbane. The workshop will provide an opportunity for both government officers and industry to gain a greater understanding of the progressive rehabilitation certification process as well as the setting of Objectives, Indicators and Criteria for rehabilitation and how to measure their success. It also aims to encourage companies to trial the process either by starting or initially considering commencing the process seeking progressive certification for appropriate parts of leases. It includes a two-hour mine scenario planning exercises for which CMLRs Mine Rehabilitation Software "Phoenix" was chosen, demonstrating issues arising at a coal & a metalliferous mine. Attendance is limited but postgraduate students in related fields are welcome to register for the workshop. The registration form is available at . This course will be tought in semester 2 from 2007 onwards (instead of semester 1). The aims of the course are to provide the students with a thorough understanding of Community Aspects in the Minerals Industry. Tools for identifying and monitoring community issues and effective strategies for community engagement are developed, so the student can design and implement community awareness programs.

The Centre for Mined Land Rehabilitation in conjunction with the UQ Teaching and Educational Development Institute (TEDI) and the UQ Sustainable Minerals Institute's (SMI) Virtual Reality Research Group of the School of Engineering, have developed a Virtual Reality Mine CD in 2004/5. This new technology enables students to work on assignments by exploring a virtual reality world on their computer.
