Record Number of FY2012 Pre-Proposals Received for CIMIT Innovation Grants: Over 155 collaborations invited to submit full proposals

In January 2011, CIMIT announced a call for FY2012 pre-proposals in its Innovation Grant program. Over 300 multidisciplinary teams responded, a thirty percent increase over recent years. A significant portion of the pre-proposals represented multi-institutional collaborations as well, reflecting the vibrancy of the thirteen consortium institutions and the richness of ideas throughout the greater Boston area research community.

CIMIT Forum Series: Solving Medical Challenges with Mechanical Engineering - MIT 2.75 Clinician and Student Team Presentations

2011 CIMIT Prize for Primary Healthcare -- Finalists Selected

CIMIT has announced 10 finalists in its competition for the 2011 CIMIT Prize for Primary Healthcare. Each engineering student team will be awarded $10,000 to develop a final proposal for innovative technology to serve the needs of the frontlines of healthcare. This year's competition was very strong with applications from over 33 different engineering programs nationwide.

CIMIT Spins Out Hand Hygiene Start Up. HanGenix will install new technology system in several large-scale trial sites.

A recently formed Boston-based start up called HanGenix is the first company to be spun out of the new CIMIT Accelerator program. HanGenix is focused on reducing hospital acquired infections (HAI) by installing comprehensive hand hygiene solutions that remind clinicians to perform proper hand hygiene and document their compliance. The CIMIT Accelerator program facilitates technological innovations that can be handed off to industry within twelve to eighteen months.

10 Million NIH Quantum Grant Awarded to Interoperability Team Led by Dr. Julian Goldman

MGH Site Miner Named. Dr. Rajiv Gupta to serve as CIMIT liaison to the Mass General community.

CIMIT Names 2011 Miles and Eleanor Shore Fellow

Wasim Malik, PhD, has been awarded the CIMIT Miles and Eleanor Shore Fellowship for 2011. Dr. Malik will receive up to $50,000 to undertake research in the highly interdisciplinary field of neural prosthetics which encompasses neuroscience, clinical research, electrical engineering, mathematics, and statistics. He will focus on designing a new generation of brain-machine interfaces to restore function in patients with limb loss or paralysis.

Graduate Student Designs Cheap, Portable Wound-Healing Device - After the Haiti earthquake, physicians tested a vacuum pump meant to speed healing.

In mid-February after a massive earthquake leveled much of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, a wound-care team from Brigham and Women's hospital in Boston traveled to the devastated capital. The team's task was to help care for scores of patients suffering from the large open wounds that accompany amputations, crushed limbs, and other injuries. Among the team was MIT graduate student Danielle Zurovcik, who had developed a cheap and portable version of the negative-pressure devices currently used to speed wound healing in hospitals.

Mark Pollack, MD, named Traumatic Stress Disorders Program Leader

Dr. Mark Pollack has been named CIMIT Program Leader for Traumatic Stress Disorders, an area of study within the CIMIT Neurocluster. The CIMIT Traumatic Stress Disorders research program seeks to identify new methods to characterize and diagnose the underlying pathophysiology of traumatic stress disorders including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and to develop new therapies which reduce disabling symptoms to improve quality of life. He will also serve as the Traumatic Stress Disorder Research Director for the Homebase Program, an innovative partnership of Massachusetts General Hospital, the Red Sox Foundation, CIMIT and the VA Boston Healthcare System.
