In mid-February after a massive earthquake leveled much of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, a wound-care team from Brigham and Women's hospital in Boston traveled to the devastated capital. The team's task was to help care for scores of patients suffering from the large open wounds that accompany amputations, crushed limbs, and other injuries. Among the team was MIT graduate student Danielle Zurovcik, who had developed a cheap and portable version of the negative-pressure devices currently used to speed wound healing in hospitals.

March 2 CIMIT Forum - Radiation Optimization for Imaging: Benefits and Challenges

With the increasing use of computed tomography (CT), concerns over perceived risks with associated radiation dose have arisen. Potential risk of radiation induced carcinogenesis with CT radiation dose must be weighed against anticipated clinical benefits from tremendous information provided by CT scanning in appropriate settings Radiologists, physicists and engineers are developing smarter strategies to reduce radiation dose while retaining or enhancing the clinical value of this modern imaging tool. Tuesday, March 2, 2010, 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Mass General Hospital, Boston.
