As Joseph is warned in a dream to flee to Egypt to save Jesus from Herod, Matthew’s Gospel quotes the book of Hosea; “Out of Egypt I called my son.” This reference to older scripture not only highlights parallels to the Exodus story, but also establishes that the life of Jesus is seen as the redemptive act of God’s love to liberate His people once and for all.

Psalm 30 is an expression of praise to God despite the psalmist experiencing difficult moments of separation. His joy comes in the future and the expectation of God’s promises being fulfilled. We don’t always know the present and the “hows” or “whys” of what is happening in our lives, but with an eye to the faithfulness of God, we have a direction in which to move forward.

Psalm 2 is a psalm of might and was used in Old Testament times for coronating new kings. In the early Church, it was used as a reminder and a warning against merging with the ways and the sins of the world. It is also an invitation to seek the Lord, and to see, in Jesus, the physical true Son of God.

He is risen! As we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, we are reminded through Paul’s letter to the Corinthians that we share in this hope. As one of us, Jesus Christ is where God is found and it is the grace of God that redeems and restores the One who was crucified for us.
