Dr. David Corina

Dr. David Corina received his MA in Linguistics from Gallaudet University in 1984 and a Ph.D. from U.C. San Diego in Psychology and Cognitive Science in 1991. During this time he worked at the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences in the Laboratory of Ursula Bellugi and Ed Klima. He spent 10 years on faculty in the Department of Psychology University of Washington, Seattle before joining the CMB as a professor of Linguistics.

He currently acts as Scientific Co-Director of the National Science Foundation’s Science of Learning Center on Visual Language and Visual Learning (VL2) at Gallaudet University and runs the Cognitive Neurolinguistics Laboratory at UC. Davis. His research focuses on the cognitive and neural representation of spoken and signed languages.

Dr. Genie Gertz

Genie Gertz is currently a Dean of Deaf Studies at Ohlone College. Prior to that, she was a full-time faculty in the Department of Deaf Studies at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) for twelve years. Genie graduated from Gallaudet University in 1992 and obtained a doctorate in Cultural Studies from UCLA in 2003. Born deaf, Genie came to America from St. Petersburg, Russia at the age of eight years old. She did serve the National Association of the Deaf for four-year as the Region IV Board Member. Her main area of research interest focuses on various factors that cause to weaken Deaf individuals’ development of Deaf consciousness and identity.

We are pleased to announce a Deaf Performance that you won¹t want to miss! Peter Cook, internationally renowned Deaf Sign Language artist, will be performing on the CSUS campus on April 16, 2010! An entertainer of such remarkable talents in ASL poetry, storytelling and mime has never before been seen on this campus!

A toll-free phone number to call into on the day of the meeting and written materials will be provided prior to the meeting. Panelists will be responsible for:
· Posting the agenda and public notice at their conference call site prior to Monday. (For those that are participating in the call at the California Department of Education, Los Angeles County Office of Education, or the San Joaquin County Office of Education, the public notice will be posted for you.)
· Informing their site administrator of the public meeting.
· Arranging for a speakerphone that is accessible to the public.
· Printing at least two hard copies of all materials that are provided prior to the call.
· Circulating a voluntary public sign-in sheet (will be provided) if members of the public are present.
· Be prepared to stay at your site until the posted time for the meeting to adjourn, which is 4:30 p.m.

It was a pleasure to work with the group of about 25 people selected for AB2040 panel. All of us were special education professionals in the field and/or classroom, and all of us were respectful of each other’s expertise in their area of special education in regards to helping our students achieve a high school diploma through an alternative to CAHSEE. The panel met for a total of 7 days over 3 meetings, which were in June, August, and September.

The State provided us with research of what other alternative tests had been considered, and also what 9 other states were doing as alternative routes to a high school diploma. This information helped guide us in thinking what was practical, possible, and feasible. We broke up into 3 groups to brainstorm what criteria should be considered once eligibility was determined (as stated by AB2040). We then came together to combine and fine tune the ideas. Some of the ideas included work samples that justify meeting a standard that was missed on the exam; scores from other exams; number of attempts and extent of effort to remediate weak areas. At all times, the rigor of the CAHSEE was expected to be matched.

We will have a phone conference of all the participants Wednesday, Oct 21st, from 3 to 4:30 pm. This phone conference is open to the public.

In the meantime, it would be helpful for us as teachers and students to keep evidence of meeting standards, at least until we know what the final alternative route to CAHSEE looks like. Better yet, empower the students to keep track of their work!

The AB 2040 Panel will convene via teleconference on October 21, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. for the purpose of reviewing the panel’s findings and recommendations, regarding alternative means to the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) for students with disabilities, which will be presented to the State Board of Education and the Superintendent of Public Instruction in November 2009.
