Born in France, James Tissot (1836-1902) had a successful artistic career in Paris before going to London in the 1870s, where he established himself as a renowned painter of London society. After experiencing a religious vision in the Church of St. Sulpice in Paris in the 1880s, he embarked on an ambitious project to illustrate the New Testament.

The creation of these paintings was a zealous endeavor for Tissot. His ardent efforts included two pilgrimages to the Holy Land; numerous detailed sketches of local architecture, clothing and customs; multiple readings of the New Testament; and pages upon pages of New Testament commentary — evidence that Tissot devoted a significant amount of time to pondering the divine nature of Jesus Christ and his own relationship to his Savior.

There will be a short question and answer session following the lecture.
This presentation will investigate numerous examples of illustrated Bibles from several different centuries, including works accomplished by the Limbourg brothers and the monumental Moralized Bibles produced for King Louis IX of France (Saint Louis).

Throughout the Middle Ages, religious scholars attempted to understand the Bible by applying several layers of interpretation to the text. One of those layers involved looking for types and shadows in every prophecy, psalm, parable and divine action. Exegesis, or the art of discovering these layers of meaning, was often recorded in Bible manuscripts. While this often took the form of textual commentary, there are many extraordinary examples of illustrated Bibles that
depict in parallel the events of the original text coupled with a visual representation of these secondary meanings or types and shadows. These manuscripts combine art and interpretation with the Holy Word to reveal a visual culture of dualistic understanding of the scriptures.

When: Thu Mar 18, 2010 7pm to 8pm
Event Status: confirmed
Event Description:
On Thursday, February 18, 2010, at 7:00 pm, John W. Welch, a law professor and religion scholar at Brigham Young University, will present a lecture in the BYU Museum of Art Auditorium titled "Hidden in Plain Sight: Overlooked Christian Treasures on the Long Walls of the Sistine Chapel." The lecture is based on a presentation recently given by Welch at the International meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in Rome and is offered to assist museum visitors in their personal exploration of the visual symbols presented in the museum's current exhibition of religious art: “Types and Shadows: Intimations of Divinity.”

The frescoes on the walls of the Sistine Chapel were commissioned in 1480 by Pope Sixtus IV and executed by the most respected painters of the 15th century. Most people know what is on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, but the superb paintings on the walls also reveal fascinating insights that should not be overlooked. These frescoes show numerous typological parallels between the life of Moses and the ministry of Jesus Christ, which demonstrate the continuity between the old covenant and the new covenant. The significance of these masterpieces for understanding the early Christian view of Jesus as the "new Moses," together with a desire to appreciate the Renaissance awareness of these types and shadows has prompted renewed interest in these “hidden treasures.”

Welch received a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in Latin and Greek from BYU in 1970. He studied at Oxford University as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow. Welch received his J.D. from Duke University, and is currently the Robert K. Thomas Professor of Law in the J. Reuben Clark Law School. In 1979, Welch founded FARMS (Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies), now part of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship at BYU. In 1996 he directed the Masada and Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit at the MOA, and since 1991 he has served as the editor-in-chief of BYU Studies.

“Types and Shadows: Intimations of Divinity” encourages viewers to participate in the process of seeking out and finding meaning in the symbols, metaphors and veiled visual references that “point to” the divine mission of Jesus Christ. The 44 works in this exhibition, which include paintings, prints and sculpture, have been selected to guide the viewer through a process of seeing beyond obvious and familiar narratives. “Types and Shadows” will be on view at the museum through March 13, 2010.
