Hardware & Design

The new TiVo Premiere comes with a new light and smaller design that the previous TiVo boxes of the past.  This design makes it much nicer to put it newer TV stand that are coming more slim and compact. The ports on the back are pretty much the same as the previous TiVo HD box  with HDMI, coaxial, component, composite video connections. Also two USB ports, eSATA port for external storage, Ethernet port for a wired connection and a CableCard slot which you will need to get from your cable provider to get this to work and inside there is a 320GB hard drive to round up the hardware features.

TiVo New Flash Based UI

Now before you even get started the setup process does take quite awhile so be prepared to have 30-45 minutes of waiting time to get things setup.   Now the new menu system is a flash based UI menu system with HD visual in most of the screens.  The UI is based off of the “swivel” UI that was shown in the last TiVo series update. Going to a specific show will give you more information about that show and will give you suggestions and more content related to each show and even down to the actor as well and also the top part next to the picture and picture will dynamically changed according to the content that you are looking for.

Searching is a lot easier than before as it uses full swivel search and as you type in a name your searching for the suggestion will come up and will show content related to what you are searching for as well.  Search is nice but keyboard is really needed to feel that searching can be a lot easier.

TiVo on the Web

TiVo in the past has covered most of your home media but not much when it came to web content. Now with Series 4 and the TiVo Premier you have YouTube, Netflix, Blockbuster, Podcasting, streaming radio support build-in. Although some things need a separate account a separate service charge the TiVo does handle it and gives it to you in one box.

Most of the services work well but what is lacking is HD content from theme. Most of of the podcast and YouTube content is not in HD which you can easily get on your PC is disappointing and should be changed in a software update.  It is nice that is accessible but we should be getting the full HD experience with this new TiVo

Overall

Overall the new TiVo Premiere is one of the best set-top boxes that you can get. I would recommend over almost all cable provider boxes. The UI is faster than the last one and the interface is in HD but there are a lot of menus that are not fully in HD which can fully take out of the experience and TiVo should really consider changing the whole UI to be fully HD and flash based for the nice streamlined look.  If you are in the market for a set-top box the TiVo Premiere is going to be the best bang for your buck currently.

The LG X120 Netbook is a 3G ready netbook that comes out in the crowded market of 3G ready netbooks. Does the X120 stand out amount the rest to be the best.  Check out the review, videos and pics inside to find out.

Hardware

The first thing that stands out when you look at the X120 is the nice soft look and feel of it with the nice accents on the the side that give it a nice touch of color with the nice soft rounded edged.  The keyboard is a nice size and feels good to type on the keys. The mouse pad as a bit of a plastic feel to it but it  does work well. The 10.1 in screen gives you a lot of screen real estate to work with when looking at longer documents such as spreadsheets.  There is a 1.3 Megapixel camera that can be used for video chat and Skype calls.  To this on the road the netbook comes 3G ready, an 1.6ghz Intel Atom processor and 1GB of ram and 7 hours of battery life on a full charge to round up the hardware specs.

LG Smart On

A quick way to access information without full loading into the OS you can. the OS turns on in a second and gives you access to quick things such as Web, Music, Pictures, Online Gaming and Chat.  The interface which is a Linux based OS is pretty quick and simple to use and give you what you need quickly on the go and even will save you battery life.

Windows XP and 3G coverage

The netbook does come with Windows XP which does work well but Windows 7 on here would work much better since its designed more for netbooks.  For 3G coverage we are using AT&T 3G which when we were in coverage did work well but it can be spotty at times but I would put that more on AT&T network coverage not being as adequate and not the netbooks performance which is stellar when on 3G.

Overall

Overall the netbook is solid with great features, nice looks and great speeds. We do wish that it came with Windows 7 that would take better advantage of this hardware. If you are in the market for a netbook the LG X120 is one to look out for and definitely consider picking up. 

Today Microsoft gave out a press release for the launch date and pricing of the Kinect and also announced a new Xbox 360 arcade. Pricing, Pictures and video are in inside to read on for more.

Microsoft stated in there press release today that the Kinect will be available for $149.99 and will be bundled with Kinect Adventures. This is the long rumored price that was leaked a few times by different retails but now Microsoft has confirmed it.  They also stated that the launch titles for Kinect will be solid at a $50 price point which is higher than what most people expected which was assumed to be around the $10-$20 range.  Maybe we will get that price point for Xbox Live arcade games and full top tier titles at a $50 price point. 

Next Microsoft announced a new Xbox 360 arcade version will be available August 3rd for $199.99 and will come with the same new design and built in wireless-n but with a 4GB of internal flash memory and a matte finish. This seem pretty disappointing with only 4GB of memory and you have other competitors with 120GB models as their lower tier. At this point Microsoft should be offering a 120GB model and a 250GB model and find other ways to difference the two but I am also a believer in that all companies should come with just 1 console and that’s it.

We saw the quick preview earlier of Blackberry OS 6 but now we have live video of it in action on a Blackberry 9800.  Check out the video inside.

The big change come into the main menu which now you scroll though form side to side and and you can pull up the mention to reveal a bigger screen. You have an All section but menu options are group into different categories as well. The browser has been upgraded to support webkit and giving you a better desktop like experience. 

It seems the major part of this update is the layout and browser update which are two needed things in a very stale Blackberry OS. The update look gives it a nicer and more cool looking UI but at the same time it does feel like like look is still a few years behind the others.  Overall its going to be a great update for Blackberry users but only time will tell where it will compete in this very competitive mobile OS market.

Today Apple had there press conference for the issues concerning the iPhone 4. Does Apple do the right thing? Is there a recall? Read on, watch the video inside to find out.

Apple’s attack of the issue basically came down to giving away free cases for all iPhone 4 users and new buyers until September 30th. They also are giving money back to users that have already purchase the case or bumper from them. They also made some comparisons of other smartphones such as the Blackberry 9700 (Bold) and the Samsung Omnia II. 

To me Apple is willing selling you a flawed product while may not happen to everyone they are saying we will sell it flawed for now and give you a case to prevent this issue from happening but you have to use this case to prevent this issue fully. Accessories should be an option not a requirement and it seems here that it’s a requirement.

I also find that Apple is hurting the Case manufactures for then next couple of months with this free case which seems to be a way of pushing the cost of a recall a bit off to the case companies who will lose profit and will cost apple a little but not a lot down the line when compared to a recall.  Also making the comparison of reception issues to two smartphones that are conveniently Verizon phones is a bit tacky in my opinion as this is about them and their issue and pointing out others doesn’t make it any better.  Also I found this overall conference to have a vibe more focused on Apple investors rather than consumers. It seems like the stock price was a more of a concern than the consumer who is affect by this.

It will be very interesting to see how this will affect apple as this issue tied into the Gizmodo issues have created a not so smooth launch for Apple which is strange thing for them.
