Before you know it, little Jimmy next door has his first asthma attack of the season, and Dorothy down the street almost chokes herself on an extension chord clearing brush from a forty degree slope she claims is her property.

I’m not too satisfied until my yard is perfect, but there is a point where a line has to be drawn, and not with an electric cord attached to a Black & Decker product or Quaker State leaking lines from an an out-of-date John Deere.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, in only one hour of use, older gas-powered lawn mowers produce as much air pollution as a new car does in 11 hours.

Gasoline-powered mowers produce a cut that results in greater water loss and increased disease problems in lawns (iii). Although many are now made with 4-stroke engines (creating less pollution than 2-stroke engines), emissions are still a by-product that can be avoided.

Thankfully, there are regulatory controls in place to limit as much exhaust emissions from gasoline powered lawn equipment: any lawn mower older than 1996 has to comply to new exhaust emission standards.

We have taken aim in a positive direction, but our standards need to be reevaluated to hit our mark. A call for action is imperative, not only on The House floor, but in our own backyards.

This is obviously not true across the board.

I have a neighbor with perfect teeth and a couple guys she calls friends and her lawn is dirt. She seems to be doing OK, I guess, but she could care less about her overgrown shrubs and dirt hill lot.

And for the environment, providing soot and dust to the air is about as much action that takes place on her property. She’s not contributing to potential benefits, environmentally and appearance wise. It’s not helping my property value any.

More than likely, it’s decreasing the value of my place. I need to have a talk with her. An intervention is long overdue.

We all know the process of photosynthesis–I don’t want to recap 8th grade science, but to get the most out of your lawn, you have to work with what you have been given.

Riding the tide is much easier than fighting the ocean. That’s easy to say. Reaching the shore is one thing, learning how to get there without losing sight of your towel and umbrella is a different feat.

My neighbor, Sara will be her name, is doing everything right to create a perfect environment for a rich, green lawn to strive. But it’s not what she is doing, it’s what she isn’t doing.

That sounds elitist but it’s quite simple. It’s not hard to get green grass, but getting green grass with nature’s guidance is even easier. I’m not asking to find your center or chi.

I’m just asking you to consider a new way of looking at the damage that occurs when thriving lawns are manicured improperly, and examine the environmentally sound ways of caring for your piece of countryside to decrease negative impact on what has been thriving long before you were here. It’s not a secret.

Nature will do the work for you. The key is to not negate what nature has given you.

Realistically, Sara does not care to mow her yard. And really, it’s dirt so it would be pointless to start.

It all begins with Soil. But let me jump back a few feet and get you dialed in.

Why don’t you take what you’ve learned, and you volunteer to care for her yard?

She might even pay you, I don’t know. (see Title, repeat)

We need to change the way we think about outside chores. (I just called them chores. See, I’m labeling an outdoor exercise that enhances muscle tone, conditions cardiovascular functioning and is a proven weight lost regiment a chore.) OK. It’s work, but exercise isn’t exactly a hot dog at a baseball game.

Tips for your success:

1. Don’t overdo it! One or two hours of gardening is plenty, especially when you are beginning.
2. Don’t lift objects that are too heavy for you. If you injure yourself, chances are you won’t be able to continue to gardening for exercise and weight loss.
3. Stretch before, during and after gardening. Don’t stay down on your knees while weeding or planting for extended periods of time. Get up and move!
4. Garden at least 3-4 times a week. Weeds grow fast.
5. Continue your outdoor exercise routine even after you last blooms have faded. Shoveling the snow, raking leaves, and splitting wood are great calorie burners that will lead to weight loss!
6. Don’t forget the added benefit of growing your own healthy fruits and vegetables and your yard will look beautiful from all of your hard work!
7. Have fun and remember the reason your doing it!

Once you get into the habit of viewing gardening as an excellent way to lose weight and stay in shape, you may never go back to the gym again!

You can lose weight by gardening–up to 300-600 calories per hour!

Here’s the breakdown of a typical man weighing 180 pounds spending 30 minutes doing own of the following:

Watering lawn/garden – 61 calories

• Raking – 162

• Bagging leaves – 162

• Planting seeds/seedlings – 162

• Planting trees – 182

• Weeding – 182

• Clearing Land – 202

• Digging, spading, tilling – 202

• Laying Sod – 202

• General gardening – 202

• Chopping wood – 243

• Gardening with heavy power tools – 243

• Mowing the lawn with a push mower – 243

• Shoveling snow – 243

• Shoveling heavy snow – 364 calories

If you aren’t use to exercising in the garden or have been relatively inactive all winter, start slowly. Just remember to work within your means and not over do it, especially in the heat of summer. As with any exercise program, check with your doctor before starting. And make sure you stretch before you start digging!

It wasn’t always this way. Believe it or not, there was a time when cutting your grass didn’t involve gas-belching engines guzzling back and forth across over-fertilized sod.

The first mowers were manual reel mowers, also known as cylinder mowers. All one had to do was push, and the wheels would spin a cylinder of razor-sharp blades, making a sound similar to Edward Scissor Hands grooming your weird neighbor’s miniature poodle.

Of course, a new century brought about the invention of gas-powered reel mowers and gas-powered rotary mowers, but not everybody felt comfortable with this new technology. Many stuck with manual reel mowers, and many continue to use them today. Some switched to electric devices, long extension cords (mended with patches of duct tape) stretched from screened in back porch outlets to impossible lengths. Elderly women were partial to these electric devices, I realized. I was afraid for their safety, to be frank.

But while the basic technology hasn’t changed much in more than a century, manual reel mowers still boast a number of key advantages over their gassy rotary decedents. In addition to the environmental advantages of zero pollution, they cost less, require minimal maintenance, they’re less dangerous, and clean-up isn’t a chore. Push mowers are lighter, smaller, and easy to operate. Most push reels are quite inexpensive and many stores are rising to meet the increased demand.

There are other choices on the market than the typical electric, push and gas lawn mowers. Solar-powered mowers are available, too. According to a feature in Omni magazine, there’s a mower that basically operates on its own, traveling your entire yarn during the day and resting at night. Apparently, a special fence is used to keep it within the lawn boundary. Also, it is installed with a built in alarm to prevent possible theft, which, incidentally, keeps it from pestering the neighbor’s cat .

(See the rough at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, and play a round without violently cursing the green’s keepers or sobbing that night. I’m digressing…

Grass needs three things to thrive. Water. Sunlight. Nutrients. If you have the right variety of grass that’s largely free of bugs, disease, and weeds, a beautiful lawn should be a cinch!

THE MACHINE

It’s important to know about basic lawn care and exactly what kind of grass you have. Different grasses thrive at different cutting heights, and adjustments to your mower may be necessary depending on your yard. Don’t cut too high, and more importantly, not too low. It always grows back, but a bad hair cut will ruin your week. (Go to the gym or take a walk. Pretend your mowing as you walk around the block, I don’t know. It’s summer, get some exercise! (drink a beer)

Once you know how much to cut, when do you mow? Depends on how much your getting paid, and if the lawn hasn’t been growing because of drought or because it’s intimidated by its new nemesis, then skip a week or two to let it regain its growth potential and come back to AA. Otherwise, lawn care experts recommend regular mowing. For information on regular mowing, ask your barber. It all depends on Your Push Reel. Don’t ask your barber, I take that back. Ask him why he’s still drinking whiskey and using a gas eater. Consider not coming back, insult him, and give him a big tip.

So, let’s say you want a perfect lawn–a lawn that resembles the 16th fairway at your favorite golf course. Is this possible? Depending on what part of the world you live in, it is. In more temperate locals, a thick, luscious landscape is not only feasible, it’s not complicated. But there are certain facts and procedures that one should learn to ensure their withered grass grows healthy and not browner. And stays that way!

Caring for Grass: The Basics

Have you ever wondered why your neighbor’s lawn grows deep green, like a rolling fairway at Augusta? Have you notice your grass–a smaller version of Saint Andrews–wither to brown shag and become overrun by weeds? How can you maintain a professionally groomed, green yard without shelling over a heap of green to a professional landscaping company? If you’re up late at night tossing and turning because the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, no need to fret. Everything you need to know is right here. So go inside, kick off your mowing shoes and have some iced-tea. We’re going to let you in on some simple tips to help your lawn look better than you’ve ever expected. Let’s get started!

• Before cutting, remove as much debris as possible. (It varies, but with some push wheel mowers, small twigs will cause jams.

• Wear gloves. Even if it’s hot as the the 4th of July (or maybe it is the 4th of July, I don’t know). Gloves will save you when your shaking hands (or more) later that night. By the way, why are you mowing on a holiday? Ohhhh, I see. Exercise. Got it.

• Keep steady. I’ve seen people use their push reel mowers like they would a vacuum cleaner: pushing, then pulling in all directions. It’s like a bad first date. No! Simply walk and cut. Keep a pace, steady. The faster you walk, the faster the blade turns.

• Wear some shoes (and not sandals) you don’t mind getting dirty. Keep your grass low and cut often (ever 1 to 2 weeks). Five inches is too high to use a push reel mower on.

• Clean those blades

• Enjoy the exercise and your accomplishment (or chore) maybe a beer

Maintaining Your Lawn — where the tired get tired and the Weak get tired too but don’t complain about it.

If your preference is to keep the grass taller, then it’s not going to hurt the lawn, but the chances of hurting your lawn by cutting outweighs the possibility of sustaining a green, 3 inch buzz cut in the dog days of August; more than likely, that prim look you were grooming for will be as brown as the dirt on a pitcher’s mound.

Remember: You are setting an example. You are making the move to try it. And I know you, you’ll make it work. It always happens when you have a purpose that relies on your reason. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for commercial turf and grounds riding reel-type turf mowers and greens mowers. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the worlds regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,000 cities in Japan. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a citys marketing and distribution value vis-a-vis others. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market.

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the worlds major cities for “commercial turf and grounds riding reel-type turf mowers and greens mowers” for the year 2009. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales.

Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for commercial turf and grounds riding reel-type turf mowers and greens mowers. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.
