Anubis was the god to protect the dead and bring them to the afterlife. He was usually portrayed as a half human, half jackal, or in full jackal form wearing a ribbon and holding a flail in the crook of its arm^[5]. The jackal was strongly associated with cemeteries in ancient Egypt, since it was a scavenger which threatened to uncover human bodies and eat their flesh^[6] The distinctive black color of Anubis “did not have to do with the jackal [per se] but with the color of rotting flesh and with the black soil of the Nile valley, symbolizing rebirth.”^[6]

Anubis is depicted in funerary contexts where he is shown attending to the mummies of the deceased or sitting atop a tomb protecting it. In fact, during embalming, the “head embalmer” wore an Anubis costume. The critical weighing of the heart scene in Book of the Dead also show Anubis performing the measurement that determined the worthiness of the deceased to enter the realm of the dead (the underworld). New Kingdom tomb-seals also depict Anubis atop nine bows that symbolize his domination over the foes of Egypt.^[3] Is this just me or does this make sense since Locke, Ben, Christian Shepard, Jacob, and possibly Claire keep coming back from the dead. Is the island some sort of “limbo” or the lost city of Atlantis? Only time will tell!    

Watchmen

Synopsis: Action adventure Sci-fi movie based on a twelve issue comic book  

published by DC Comics.

Finding new characters on an alternate history of the United States is always an ironic concept. If nothing else, the alternate unversive aspect of the film empowers you to conceptualize your knowledge of history and to ask “What if we went down a different path?”

Do not expect your average light hearted comic adaptation in the likes of Batman (Mr. Freeze) or Scooby-Doo. There is dark illusions of humanity that could be disturbing and explicit sexual imagery. Imagine a world where Nixon and USSR are on the brink of war and only one mutated atomic man and his gang of masked heros can save the world. That is if they decide to come out of retirement!

Soundtrack of the baby boomers is a forgone conclusion but creates the right environment to drive the story. However this movie will amp up the rival and comparisons between  Dc vs Marvell comics. (Watchmen vs Avengers)

Bottom line: 

Animation: Technically this movie is very solid with the CGI and effects. ***

Thrill: It was not intense like Batman begins, but has a decent amount of intrigue. **

Date movie: One the guy side of things, but the mystique of costumes and the love story may prove likable to your date. (YES)

The official trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s new film The Wrestler, starring Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei. 

Official Summary: “Director Darren Aronofsky presents a powerful portrait of a battered dreamer, who despite himself and the odds stacked against him, lives to be a hero once again in the only place he considers home inside the ring.”

Synopsis:  It is hard to imagine that they are casting Marisa Tomei as a washed up stripper. She delivers an outstanding performance and has a fabulous physical appearance.  Mr. Rourke’s hard life not only gave him the right look for this character but also deep insight into the day to day tribulations of someone not ready to give up the fight. Think of going real fast down a windy road and throwing the steering wheel out the window.  A funny, real, depressing, and exhilarating movie that deserves all the Oscar nods. 4 Stars.

From Crackle: The International Film Clip: Guggenheim Scene  The International from Sony Pictures brings Clive Owen and Naomi Watts into an action  suspense drama that spans the globe. Synopsis: NYPD, Interpol, and other forces are hot on the trail of an international bank that is funding illicit activities. Bottom Line: Suspense drama that makes me wonder if Clive Owen will ever be cast as James Bond?(Of course he would need to shave first!) Naomi Watts’ character  seems to lack luster but she delivers a quality performance. The use of light and camera angles create a very serious and real drama that will enable you to suspend disbelief. The violence and gore make this a “guy” movie (not a date movie) but for an action suspense drama, it is worth the money.3 1/2 Stars

MIND THE GAP: “While in Essex, Massachusetts, Daniel watched a news report covering the discovery of the apparent derelict Oceanic Flight 815 in the depths of the Sunda Trench close to Indonesia. When asked why he was crying by his caretaker, he replied that he didn’t know”He is crying because Charlotte died in the time warp and he had yet to remember her death because it had not happened yet. Don’t let this time travel complexity ruin your LOST LIFE.  Charlotte was part of the Dharma Initiative but left the island. I think this was added for cohesiveness…but I was right Charlotte is gone. 

“Never Back Down”  by director Jeff Wadlow and staring Sean Faris, Djimon Hounsou, Amber Heard, and a bunch of up and coming teen-agers. 

Synopsis: Teenie boppers in Orlando florida become MMA fighters and testosterone starts to fly.

Bottom Line: This rag is a mindless teenage drama that is not only predictable but also cheesy! If you want to believe that rich kids can train like MMA experts, organize, and then promote fights via the Internet (Excuse me while I throw-up); Then this movie is for you. We should all get out our cameras and create an easy indie teanage film like this, because box office is well over 27 million. Fight scenes are nothing short of unrehearsed and the story line is spotty, which means this movie gets 2 stars only because it is reaching a multi-million dollar audience. RENT this movie and have fun watching teen age boys kick the snot out of each other. Remember this is NOT for impressionable children.

Nominated for 10 Oscars, Slumdog Millionaire already has another 42 wins, 37 nominations, and a Box Office return well over 67 million dollars. Director Danny Boyle has proven to be a riveting filmmaker. 

Synopsis: India version of “Who wants to be a Millionaire” exposes a teenager to possibly winning a fortune and an official investigation into the depth of his knowledge.

Bottom line:  Fantastic gritty film that has a beautifully complete story of various events consolidating into one moment of truth. Intense Drama leaves a lasting impression that is not quickly forgotten. This movie is deserving of all the nominations it is receiving.  SEE THIS IN THE THEATRE!
